LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter from the Editor There is something so great about a fresh start, and there is no greater fresh start than a new year! I love a new beginning and a clean slate because anything can happen! The possibilities are endless and hope abounds! In this issue, we are excited to share about healthy living with some of our local favorites. Dr. Paul Willmon of Fairfield Chiropractic shares his approach to addressing functionality and mobility when it comes to chronic pain. You won't want to miss this month's spotlight on Serenity Wellness & Counseling and the fascinating, compassionate people behind it. Cy-Fair Fire Department also shared with us all about their new Tele911 system. They're continuing to serve our community endlessly and selflessly--but now with an advanced telemedicine platform to better navigate the healthcare system. Cheers to you Cypress! Here's to a new year, and new beginnings!

Cupping
At Fairfield Chiropractic, Dr. Paul Willmon’s approach to chronic pain is to address functionality and mobility to determine the root cause, then work to restore movement through a variety of therapies.
HOW CAN CHIROPRACTIC CARE ADDRESS CHRONIC PAIN?
The first one is pain relief. In fact, some hospitals in the Northeast are beginning to use chiropractors in their emergency rooms to reduce the use of opioids, because manipulation often gives immediate and significant pain relief.
WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE WITH CHRONIC PAIN SEE YOU?
Patients who do a lot of heavy and manual labor, tend to come in on a regular basis. I also treat recent injuries, including shoulder, knee, and ankle injuries. For chronic pain, if you feel like you are not living the life you want to live-because of your pain--then come in and let me evaluate your pain. We can find out what is preventing your movements, causing the pain, and how we can address it to get you active again.
HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM CHRONIC PAIN?
We offer a lot of active therapy beyond just chiropractic manipulation or adjustment. We also do fascia work which focuses on the muscles and the tissue around the area, and use a tool called Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). We do cupping, kinesio taping (tissue compression), as well as stretching, strengthening, and stabilization exercises.
WHAT ABOUT TEENS AND KIDS?
I see a lot of teenagers, especially athletes, with sports-related injuries. We also see teenagers for
posture because they are lifting heavy backpacks in school every day. We not only work on treating them, but we also teach them how to properly carry the backpack to reduce the strain on their back. In younger kids, I will occasionally see them for colic, ear infections, and reflux.
WHAT ARE SOME PRACTICAL TIPS TO AVOID INJURY OR CHRONIC PAIN?
Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. The minimum is 48 ounces for the sedentary person, and then increase your intake from there. I’ve seen some patients whose back problems decrease significantly just by increasing their water intake because those muscles get hydrated. Additionally, being active helps avoid injury; our bodies are made to move. Start by taking a 15-minute walk after you eat a meal, and pretty soon will be doing 30 minutes and adding in other activities.
IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN STRESS AND CHRONIC PAIN?
Most people tend to hold their stress in their shoulders, back, or in a part of the body where they had a previous injury, causing that area to handle stress less well. For example, stress can cause an increase in knee pain when someone is stressed because of an old injury in that knee. Improved breathing or a few minutes of meditation can make a huge difference in dealing with stress. We’ll work those muscles and loosen them up, show you how to stretch and take that stress out of the neck or back, and then how to utilize different meditation or breathing techniques to help you dissipate that stress in your life. SERENITY WELLNESS AND COUNSELING CENTER: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WELLNESS
N u r t u r e Yo u r M i n d , Body and Soul ARTICLE BY CHEYENNE LEITCH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGI LEWIS
24
S ELF CA R E | H E A LT H + W EL L NESS
Serenity Wellness and Counseling Center was founded in 2019 by Nicole Bankhead. The center is not just a counseling facility, Nicole has worked hard, with the help of her co-owner, and husband, Bryan Bankhead, to turn it into a sanctuary dedicated to nurturing and addressing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and soul. The story of Serenity Wellness and Counseling Center is deeply intertwined with the personal and professional journey of Nicole and Bryan Bankhead. The personal struggles and challenges that Nicole and Bryan have experienced in their own lives drives their passion for the work they do. Both Nicole and Bryan grew up in Cypress, so they share a genuine connection with the community they serve. As Nicole fondly reminisces, "My husband and I are both from Cypress, we both graduated from Cy-Springs." This local touch adds a personal dimension to the center, making it feel like a safe haven for Cypress residents seeking support and healing. Nicole, a former educator in the school district until 2016, transitioned her passion for helping others into the realm of mental health. Nicole remembers always being the “go-to” friend growing up; she was the one everyone came to when they were in need. Her dedication to understanding and addressing the root cause of her client's mental health concerns is evident in the core philosophy of Serenity Wellness and Counseling Center. "Our ultimate goal is to help our clients find the root cause of their concerns. I don’t have lifelong clients, as much as I’d love to keep seeing my clients forever, it’s my goal that we find their root cause and they kind of become their
own therapist in the end." Nicole emphasizes, highlighting the center's commitment to comprehensive and personalized care. Serenity Wellness and Counseling Center goes beyond traditional counseling services. Nicole proudly shares, "We have therapists who do sessions with kids from age 4 up to adults, an integrated health practitioner, we do family sessions, marriage counseling and medication management, and we even have two service dogs." The inclusion of service dogs exemplifies the center's dedication to creating a comforting and inclusive environment for clients of all ages. One distinctive aspect of Serenity is its holistic approach to wellness. Nicole and Bryan understand that mental health is not a one-size-fits-all journey. "We're not focusing on our clients' mental health through only talk therapy," Nicole explains. "Our clinicians are also trained in other evidence-based therapies, like EMDR and Cognitive therapies." This commitment to diverse therapeutic modalities ensures that clients receive a customized and effective treatment plan tailored to their unique needs. A few of the other services offered at Serenity are LENS Neurofeedback, Ketamine assisted Therapy, Red Light Therapy and there are still many others. In the pursuit of whole wellness, Serenity takes an integrative approach that extends beyond mental health. Nicole affirms, "We even have a dietitian because we really want to hone in on whole wellness. We're not focusing on only one piece; we're looking at the whole body." This comprehensive approach acknowledges the interconnectedness of mental CONTINUED >

and physical well-being, promoting a balanced and sustainable path to healing. The commitment to excellence at Serenity is underscored by Nicole's personal involvement in the services offered. "Every service that we offer at the Center, besides being a dietitian, I have been trained in first and have tried with my clients first, and then I offer to my clinicians to get trained in them," Nicole shares. This hands-on approach ensures that clients receive the highest quality care, with Nicole leading by example and staying informed about the efficacy of each therapeutic technique.
Serenity Wellness and Counseling Center embodies the Bankheads' passion for creating a space where individuals and families can embark on a transformative journey toward holistic well-being. As Cypress residents, Nicole and Bryan Bankhead have not only brought their expertise to Serenity but have also created a haven for the community to find solace and support. The center's warm and inviting atmosphere, combined with the personalized care provided by dedicated professionals, makes Serenity Wellness and Counseling Center a beacon of hope. VIA TELECONFERENCE, A DOCTOR CAN DIRECTLY AND IMMEDIATELY OFFER THE PATIENT REAL-TIME SOLUTIONS thinker and dedicated innovator by his peers, Chief Reed believes that; ‘just because we’ve always done things a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s the best way; tradition is a barrier to progress.” It was this trailblazing mentality that led the team at CFFD to be the first in Harris County to implement the novel use of telemedicine using a platform called Tele911 to navigate patients through the complicated healthcare system. Through a phased rollout at the start of 2023, Tele911 gives paramedics in the field the unparalleled ability to offer patients a real-time board-certified physician via teleconference. Right there, on the spot, as a simple yet enhanced level of triage. Without Tele911 when a 911 call is made where paramedics are dispatched, common practice is to transport the patient to the hospital. Oftentimes, that’s just not the most appropriate course of action in the interest of the patient, but with
astutely understood how Tele911 would fill the need. The implementation of Tele911 is a seamless way to get patients the right form of care, while also helping to alleviate clogged-up wait times at hospitals. Unfortunately, hospital emergency room wait times often leave paramedics with no choice but to wait around to formally sign over a patient to the hospital. Not only is this wasting time and resources—pulling the paramedics away from other pertinent incoming calls–but the abundant, seemingly endless waiting can lead to burn-out in paramedics who truly desire to help people. Widely used in California, Florida, and throughout Texas, the phased rollout of Tele911 for CFFD allowed for a smooth adoption of the system in a moderated and controlled manner. Tele911 empowers paramedics to offer more choices and therefore more appropriate treatment. In a lot of cases, an ambulance ride to the CONTINUED >

hospital isn’t the most effective form of care. Instead, via teleconference, a doctor can directly and immediately offer the patient real-time solutions. From writing prescriptions to finding the right treatment or clinic, or even inpatient services for mental health needs. CFFD Lieutenant Greyson Johnson, the nation's highest user of Tele911 and EMS Field Training Officer said; “It helps paramedics feel useful and allows them to navigate the healthcare system to effectively get the help the patient actually needs.” Johnson says, “This is when I know I’ve served the patient well.” Assistant Chief Reed also shared how Tele911 with CFFD allows for groundbreaking advancements in crisis response. From situations like Winter Storm Uri in 2021, to hurricanes and everything in between where travel is hampered and resources and manpower are stretched thin. The ability to add teleconferences with the dedicated doctors partnered with CFFD through Tele911 is a game-changer. The exemplary service of Tele911 has proven incredibly effective and helpful for caregivers of the elderly, infirm, and even pregnant and new moms. It’s an extra layer of reassurance when the patient can be treated at home and avoid an unnecessary trip to the emergency room. And it doesn’t stop there; follow-up care, contacts, and plans are also provided. The sense of personal fulfillment and the rewarding nature of the job when not being stifled by red tape, serves every member of the healthcare system, from patients to paramedics to hospitals and the community as a whole. E X PER IENCE J OY F U L LI V ING Jubilee offers the f irst communit y in Texas focused on enhancing the well-being of its residents
In the heart of Hockley, just south of Highway 290 and minutes from the Grand Parkway, lies the newest Johnson Development residential community of Jubilee—a 1,620-acre community with a focus on joy and the holistic well-being of its residents. Jubilee's journey began with a question: "How can we create a community that helps residents navigate the stress and negativity of everyday life?" This question sparked a vision, propelling Jubilee to become Texas's first wellness community—a joyful haven intending to enhance its residents' well-being. The commitment is not just a concept; it's woven into the fabric of Jubilee, shaping thoughtful
land layouts, wellness-centric amenities, positive architecture, and a lifestyle that goes beyond the ordinary. “We want to raise the bar for how a community can better the lives of the individuals that live in it,” said June Tang, General Manager and Vice President of Jubilee. “Every aspect of this new community is being intentionally designed to promote positivity, allowing residents to decompress from the everyday grind and connect with nature and each other.” Jubilee isn't just a development; it's a living example of how a community can profoundly enrich the lives of those who call it home. A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO AMENITIES: NURTURING BODY, MIND, AND SOUL
Jubilee believes in taking care of well-being from every angle with amenities that benefit your body, emotions, and mind. Four pillars of well-being—connection, exploration, reflection, and inspiration—are intricately woven into the community's design, shaping what is known as Wellness Zones. Strategically scattered throughout Jubilee, these zones cater to specific purposes for residents, creating intentional spaces that align with their diverse needs. Haley Peck, the Director of Marketing, explains, "Residents have easy access to whatever they might need at the moment, whether it be connecting with others, spending time in nature, or finding a quiet spot for introspection." Connection zones foster organic gatherings and community-planned events, encouraging residents to disconnect from the digital world and immerse themselves in the present moment. Exploration zones go beyond traditional parks, offering barefoot zones for grounding and spaces for engaging in ecotherapy, fostering a deeper connection with nature. Reflection zones provide quiet retreats for decompression and mindfulness, complemented by resident events focused on meditation and breathwork. Meanwhile, inspiration zones come alive with bright, interactive playscapes designed to invigorate children's imagination and ignite playfulness in adults. Looking ahead, the wellness concepts extend to signature amenities like the Joy Hub recreation complex, where a pool, event lawn, and clubhouse will create a vibrant gathering space. Positivity Park inspires with a signature play structure and iconic pavilion, while the Happinest nature park invites exploration and education on the area's rich natural diversity. Jubilee's commitment to well-being doesn't stop there. Future development includes 30 acres of parks, 270 acres of green space and waterways, robust walking trails, community gardens, a dog park, sports courts, and more. In every detail, Jubilee stands as a testament to a community where well-being isn't just a concept—it's a way of life.
HEALTHIER HOMES COME STANDARD
In keeping with its commitment to the concept of holistic wellness and the desire to improve life for its residents, Jubilee will include several enhanced wellness features as standard in every home. Peck says, “Advances over the past few years have given builders better tools when it comes to air quality, water quality and more. Given that we spend a significant portion of our lives indoors, we are excited to offer these health-minded options as standard features in every Jubilee home.”

Jubilee's intentional land planning seeks to create a community that goes beyond just being a residential area. Major boulevards have been designed with openness in mind, removing solid rear fencing to create a welcoming atmosphere. A strategically placed model home park sits across from the future recreation center, acting as a central gathering point for the initial phase of the community. Pedestrian trails wind gracefully around scenic detention ponds and traverse neighborhood blocks, enhancing connectivity for residents to explore and connect. Every detail is meticulously crafted, keeping the experience of each family in mind.

The builder wellness features are centered on improved air and water quality, lighting and comfort. A fresh-air intake and a MERV 13-rated whole-home, four-inch media filter are among the standard features related to air quality, while a reverse-osmosis filtration system will be offered. The standard lighting package for Jubilee includes all light switches and light bulbs in three rooms — presumably the primary bedroom, kitchen and family room — to be circadian rhythm lighting, which can improve a person’s circadian rhythm and lead to better sleep and improved long-term health. Each home will also have a platform automation panel that will control lighting brightness, color temperature, dim level settings and outdoor lighting emergency flash status. Comfort features builders will include standard in Jubilee homes incorporate a home automation panel, smart thermostats, a smart front door lock, a video doorbell, window prewiring for blackout shades in at least one room and security prewiring for one security panel, all doors and all operable first-floor windows. Solidifying their commitment to well-being, Jubilee is the first Texas community to become an early adopter of the WELL for Residential program by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), which is
designed to transform the way homes are designed, built, and maintained to support human health and well-being. The new WELL for residential program consists of more than 100 health strategies for residences with certification verified through a third party. “This new WELL for residential program adds another layer to the holistic wellness vision we have set for Jubilee,” said Tang. “It can help give residents further peace of mind in their choice to live in Jubilee.”
HOME BUILDERS COMMITTED TO THE VISION
Jubilee has invited 8 top-rated homebuilders to provide these healthier homes. Highland Homes and Coventry Homes will build on 40-foot homesites, while David Weekley Homes and Newmark Homes will split the 45-foot lots included in the first phase. Chesmar Homes and Tri Pointe Homes will build on 50-foot homesites. Building on the 60-foot lots found in the first phase of Jubilee will be Perry Homes and Westin Homes. Collectively, the builders will open eight model homes. Pricing will start in the mid $300s, and new homes will begin selling in early 2024.
