Celebrating Incredible Women

I love any opportunity to recognize the women who make my life more rich and beautiful. Of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms—and we are thankful for moms! I know I’m grateful for my own amazing mom; she’s gorgeous, funny, thoughtful and wise–I love you, Mom!

Of course, we are also thankful for the other women in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. I’ve had many women shape my life. My big sister, Kim, who I’ve always looked up to. My sisters-in-law Stephanie and Gladys who have each been my close friends and confidants over the years.

My beautiful, strong and witty mother-in-law, Silvia–who was my friend first (just ask her)! I’m also in awe of how outstanding all five of my strong, smart and beautiful nieces are as well; Madison, Serena, Kaelynn, Zoe and Vera. I want to be just like them when I grow up!

It’s the family members, teachers, coworkers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our community, pouring into our lives who are unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While we always love supporting local businesses, it’s a little extra fun this month with women in business!

We gathered together a fabulous group for this year’s Women of Influence! They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. Stunning on the inside and out!

Don’t miss local favorites, Courtney Nguyen, owner of The Flour Petal Bakery and Cypress' very own homegrown celebrity, Erica Enders shattering glass ceilings and racing records in a male dominated sport.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to get in touch with the women in your life who deserve recognition!

In celebration of women everywhere, Cheers!

Renew and Recharge at Aesthetica MD

TREAT YOURSELF TO GREAT SERVICE AND GREAT VIBES

As a married mother of two, Ashley Smith realized sometimes she needed to find a way to give herself a break; to relax and rejuvenate. “I must have looked really stressed out because one day my husband said, “you need a massage” and he booked one for me,” Ashley says. “From then, I started a self-care routine of regularly getting a facial or a massage and it made me feel so much better and changed my mentality.”  In January of 2023, Ashley opened Aesthetica MD, an innovative med spa to help others practice self-care, and to treat themselves, too!

One of the many things that sets Aesthetica MD apart from other traditional spas is its wide variety of services. Traditional spas typically offer mainly facials and massages, while Aesthetica MD's experienced team of professionals utilize advances in medicine to take their spa to the next level. “We have a medical director over the spa, a nurse that comes in twice a week, and all of our aestheticians are trained and licensed,” says Ashley.

Some of the more unique services Aesthetica MD offers are weight management, body contouring, and injectables. While Ashley believes everyone has their own unique beauty, she also knows everyone has insecurities and she opened her spa to help her customers feel good about themselves. “It’s important to me to uplift women and to make them feel more confident. We all pick ourselves apart and find things that we’re insecure about, and I don’t think enough women take time for themselves,” says Ashley.

Another special offering at Aesthetica MD is a membership program. For a

monthly membership fee, clients can choose between a facial, massage, detox wrap, or radio frequency treatment every month. “Our clients love it–the monthly cost to be a member is less than our regular price for facials and massages,” said Ashley. “And our members are encouraged and reminded to take care of themselves regularly.”

Growing up nearby and now living in Cypress, Ashley wants the community to know that they will be well taken care of when they visit the spa. “We’re locally owned, I live in the area, right down the street,” said Ashley. “I want the community to know us as a hidden gem, tucked away, but when you come in the ambiance is welcoming; you can feel the relaxing vibe.”

Ashley and her team at Aesthetica MD are dedicated to going the extra mile for their clients. They strive to make every client feel special; so they’re able to relax and refresh when they visit. ”Everyone on my team always goes the extra mile, and they are the reason the spa is so successful,” says Ashley.  Aesthetica MD’s beautifully modern and serene interior, from the relaxing music, and calming lights, to the great smell and glowing ambiance, Aesthetica MD seems to have it all. An oasis, a place for people to feel good in their bodies. “I’m extremely proud of the space that we’ve created,” said Ashley. “Our ambiance and our vibe sets us apart.”

Aesthetica MD, since opening in January, has already seen tremendous growth and has rave reviews from its customers. “We’ve grown a lot, our first month was slow but by March we tripled from where we started in January. We’ve been getting more consistent calls and people booking services over Instagram.”

Ashley doesn’t take credit for the business's success, she says that her team deserves the credit. Ashley’s team of two aestheticians and a massage therapist stepped up from the very beginning when they were first opening. “They are all so amazing and have no problem stepping in and going above and beyond since we first started,” said Ashley.

Fresh Flowers Meet Delectable Treats

Growing up in Katy, Texas with a single mom and two little sisters, Courtney Nguyen first found her entrepreneurial spirit as a teenager. Born out of the love for her family and a drive to help when her mom was diagnosed with cancer, Courtney started tutoring other students after school. Through all of her mother's treatments Courtney remembers how strong her mom was,  “To this day when I am tired or feeling down on myself I can look back on those memories'' Courtney says, ‘and use them as fuel to continue relentlessly pursuing my dreams.”

In the season after graduation from Baylor University, Courtney realized her passions didn’t align with her degree. Spinning her wheels in what felt like an endless job hunt, she started spending her free time baking and perfecting recipes. She gave hundreds of samples of her baked creations to friends and family. After their glowing (yet somewhat unexpected) reviews–alongside a Facebook post that gained momentum so fast she started booking weddings–The Flour Petal Bakery was born.

The Flour Petal Bakery is focused on offering the most delicious, moist, flavorful, but not overly sweet cakes. Courtney expertly takes her love for baked goods and thoughtfully adorns them with fresh flowers. “Watching my mom pour hours of love and hard work into each family meal after a long day at her job inspires me to give my heart

A Passion for Baking and Service Leads to a Cottage Bakery Business 16

to everything that comes out of our kitchen. Every baked item that leaves my hands has a piece of my heart in it.”

The success of The Flour Petal Bakery has been built on the concept of community over competition . Courtney belongs to a community of fellow bakers (which she says is lovingly known as the Cypress Bakers Network) supporting each other, sending referrals, sharing tips, and at times, lending a helping hand. “We truly believe that a win for any small business/cottage baker is a win for us all,” says Courtney.

A fun and exciting new avenue for Courtney and The Flour Petal Bakery is offering classes on how to make your own delicious, beautiful cakes. Business is growing with events all over Texas, and Courtney hopes to one day have a storefront.

To this day, Courtney’s inspiration and motivation continues to be her family. She’s thankful her mom has been in remission since 2016. And her sisters; Angelyna (17) helps with the managerial side of the business and Caitlyne (19) is currently attending Baylor University. “I like to think that I've made a positive impact on my sisters," says Courtney, “ I often joke that I do not want any more children because I already raised two, but truthfully these young ladies mean the world to me and I would do it all over again!”

Racing Through the Glass Ceiling

Erica Enders has been drag racing since she was a child. When she turned 8 she started racing in a junior league and then went on to race professionally with the NHRA. “I drove Junior for 9 years and then I moved up to the sportsman ranks and I drove those types of cars for 5 years,” said Erica. “Then in 2004, I got hired to drive Pro Stock, which is the professional category of NHRA drag racing, so, for the last 19 years I’ve been racing Pro Stock.”

Enders and her sister, Courtney Enders, both grew up around racing. Their father, Gregg Enders was also a race car driver, so it's no surprise that it rubbed off on his daughters. “Our dad raced his whole life, so we grew up around it,” said Erica. “Courtney and I both started racing in the Junior Drag Racing League, which back then was for kids between

the ages of 8 and 17, since then the NHRA has lowered the starting age to 5.”

Erica gives credit to her father for her success. He’s the reason she got into drag racing and the reason she has stuck with it for all of these years. “My dad taught my sister and I everything we know. He was always saying things like ‘dig deep’ and ‘play with all of the heart that you have’ and ‘gender has no role’,” said Erica. “He always instilled a positive mindset in us and that’s always been a huge benefit and I definitely attribute my success to having him in my corner.”

Erica also made it clear just how integral her sister has been in her success. “To this day, Courtney is still on the road with me and she may not be in the driver’s seat anymore but she’s such an essential part of the team,” said Erica. “It’s awesome that she’s able to be there with me every week.”

When Enders first started racing, she was the odd girl out. There weren’t many other girls who were participating in racing as it was a male dominated sport. “There weren’t many other girls when we first started out,” said Erica. “Back then there were no females but now, the stats for the junior drag racing league show that over 50% of the competitors are female.” That may be the case for the junior drag racing league, but the same cannot be said for professional drag racing. Erica has been the only woman in Pro Stock for many years.

“I was the only girl in Pro Stock for 18 years but there’s a new girl that came out this year and she’s trying to drive,” said Erica. “But I’m the only one in Pro Stock. There’s two women in Top Fuel and one in Funny Car.”

Drag racing has always been a male dominated sport and while there have been improvements and progress, it is still a male dominated sport. Erica claims that women have to work twice as hard just to get into a position to even begin making a name for themselves.

“On the negative side of things you have people saying that girls aren’t strong enough or smart enough to do drag racing,” said Erica. “So, you have to work your way up to ground zero before you can even start proving yourself.” Even though she faces challenges that come with being a woman in a male dominated sport, Erica keeps racing forward and continues to prove any negative people wrong. “Dealing with judgment is definitely a challenge and it’s unfortunate but on the other side, there are so many positives. You just have to put blinders on.”

Erica is a positive role model for young girls who are thinking of entering not just drag racing, but any male dominated sport. She serves as proof that if you put your mind to something, you can succeed, no matter what obstacles are thrown in your way. Erica wants any young girl or woman out there to know, “Anything is possible, anything you set your mind to, and the only thing that's stopping you is you. Just do your best to surround yourself with people that really believe in you and support you and you’ll be just fine.”

QUALITY CARE YOU CAN COUNT ON

Helping the Elderly and Disabled Keep their Independence with Compassion and Collaboration

Born in India, and raised in Canada, Sharan Sihota and her husband, Fateh, a subsea chemical engineer, have called Texas home for more than two decades. The Sihotas have put down roots in the Cypress community and are thankful for the opportunity to help improve the lives of those in need. The proud mother of three–with their eldest son attending Texas Tech, and two more in high school–Sharan has devoted countless hours over the years volunteering at local hospitals and retirement homes. With an obvious and genuine love for people, Sharan has always had a special place in her heart for the elderly, and thoroughly enjoys getting to know them and gleaning their wisdom as they share stories of their lives with her. It was in the season of caring for their own parents that showed Sharan and Fateh how important it is for people in need of care to feel respected, safe, independent, and enabled. It was this experience that led to the opening of Homewatch CareGivers of Cypress.

Homewatch CareGivers of Cypress specializes in providing care for the elderly, disabled, and anybody needing assistance to help them live a fuller life. Sharan's personal experience and extensive knowledge combined with her genuine and compassionate nature are what sets Homewatch CareGivers of Cypress apart. They strive to be the premier care agency providing quality care for your loved ones–and it shows.

Sharan personally conducts all consultations for new clients, taking the time to meet with the potential clients and their families, getting to know them and discerning their needs. She listens and learns about current and past health history, about their personal life and personalities, and from there she develops a customized care plan and allows for the right caregiver to be thoughtfully selected for each client. In the months following the implementation of a care plan and a caregiver being assigned, Sharan regularly visits to ensure the plan is meeting the needs of her client and this allows for any adjustments to be made, in the best interest of the client, as priorities and health needs change.

Caregivers undergo year-round specialized training. When it comes to choosing caregivers for her clients, all Homewatch CareGivers undergo national background checks and, drug and alcohol tests. They are well-trained, compassionate, empathetic, and professional at all times. “Before selecting a caregiver, I ask myself the following,” Sharan says, "Would I want this caregiver taking care of my loved one?”

When it’s time to find help caring for a loved one, all of the doubt and worry is replaced with confidence and peace of mind when Sharan compassionately, and expertly walks clients and their family members through the process.

Cypress National Charity League Chapters honored their graduating seniors for their service to the community. The young women of the Cypress NCL Chapters have volunteered thousands of hours at local charitable organizations over the past six years. As members of the NCL, in addition to service to Cypress area charities and nonprofit organizations, each young woman has fulfilled the requirements for participation in cultural activities and leadership development from seventh grade through her senior year of high school.

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

MEET CYPRESS LADIES MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

SHARE A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m a wife, mother, educator, and lover of life! I’m lucky, my profession is my passion. I’m also a proud mom of an educator. Our daughter, Bailey is a teacher at Hamilton Elementary, and our son Bayne is a junior in college at Tulsa University. My husband and I are officially empty nesters!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY ON LIFE?

“No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Theodore Roosevelt

WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF, AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

As an educator, our gratification, joy and reward come from our colleagues and our students.  Early in my teaching career, I was recognized as Teacher of the Year and a few years ago, I was named Principal of the Year. These have been true highlights in my career.

WHO IS THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST, AND WHY?

Maya Angelou, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style. “

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

I feel that teaching, like all ministries of service, is a calling. I am proud to serve daily alongside many wonderful business partners and CFISD associates.

SHARE A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m a first-generation American and the first to receive a college degree in my family. My mother immigrated from Mexico before I was born. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to live in South America for several years and to have traveled abroad extensively; including Russia, Egypt, El Salvador. I firmly believe this experience gives me a unique capacity for better communication and effectiveness, as a police officer. I’m a mother of three, and am always seeking to expand my horizons and learn new things; from being a sports car enthusiast to pursuing modeling, and advocating for immigrants.

WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF, AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

Creating the Community Outreach Program to connect the CFISD Police Department with the community. This continues to be something I am incredibly proud of; it gives me hope for the future and safety of the youth in my community.

WHO IS THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST, AND WHY?

Martha De Bayle. I admire her drive, her elegance, and her eloquence when she speaks. She shares her knowledge through her podcasts by inviting guests, such as doctors, educators, and others who have made an impact in our society.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

I enjoy helping by making myself available to assist with whatever tasks I’m requested to do for those I’m around. I am highly motivated and energetic, always looking for ways to participate in my community and expanding my duties as a police officer to grow my career and personal exposure.

“I’m a mother of three, and am always seeking to expand my horizons and learn new things.”

SHARE A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOURSELF.

I have been a part of the Cy-Fair community since the fifth grade and graduated from Jersey Village High School.  I’ve been married to my husband Roger for over 21 years and am blessed to have three amazing children from Roger’s first marriage. I was selected as the Fire Chief for Cy-Fair Fire Department after a nationwide search in 2014.  I have served in a variety of positions during my almost 33 years with the Cy-Fair Fire Department, including Assistant Chief of EMS, Lieutenant, Paramedic, Firefighter and Dispatcher. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and playing soccer.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY ON LIFE?

Show up every day and do the work.  There is no easy way, there is only the right way. Bring others along with you and raise them up. Representation matters.

WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF?

I have a Juris Doctorate degree from the South Texas College of Law and a Bachelor’s of Science in business management. I’m most proud of obtaining my law degree and passing the state bar all while working full time and trying to stay engaged with my family.

WHO IS THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST, AND WHY?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg was defined by her brilliance, her dedication to public service, her resilience, and her unwavering devotion to ensuring that our Constitution belongs to everyone. She fought to eradicate discrimination and to open opportunities for every person to live up to their full potential. Without question, she left this world a better place than she found it, and we are all the beneficiaries.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?

Choose a partner who thinks your work is as important as theirs. Strive to live a full and happy life, and make the most of every day.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

Giving back to the fire service is important to me. I give back through leadership, teaching, and association work.

Community Outreach, Cy-Fair

SHARE A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOURSELF.

Born in Mexico, raised in Kentucky, I spent my 27 year career as a special education and ESL teacher in HISD. I retired in 2010, after two rounds of breast cancer, and began volunteering at Cy-Ranch. I have been happily married for 39 years to my husband Robert, and I love telling people when Sean Christopher, our only child, graduated and left for college in 2014, I promptly replaced him with a yorkiepoo, and set about finding a new focus in life. That’s when I found Cy-Fair Helping Hands.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT?

I always dreamed of being a mother. Widowed in my mid-20’s, I remarried in 1984. After nine years, and a miracle, I became pregnant at 40. The most important role of my life was raising our son Sean.

WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF?

A wonderful way to motivate my students was through life-lessons centered around Special Olympics competitions. Memories of a lifetime were made in two trips to the White House, speaking engagements at the Winter World Games in Alaska. For one student, seeing his face on a Wheaties box was the ultimate experience!  After his performance in the Special Olympics World

Games, this young man presented me, his coach, with his gold medal. I’m humbled to have received the HISD Teacher of the Year, Tom Landry Special Olympics Coach of the Year, and the Crystal Award for Outstanding Teachers. All treasured memories in my heart forever!

WHO IS THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST, AND WHY?

I met Jean Dreyer, the founder of Cy-Fair Helping Hands, in 2013. More than a decade my senior, “Mama Jean” had endless energy when serving the underserved. Jean had no qualms about visiting homeless camps. She would smile knowingly when someone expressed concern and say “I am never alone; Jesus is with me!” Jean was my mentor, my teacher. I learned the business of leading and serving with compassion. Like Mother Teresa, Jean inspires me as she cares for “the unwanted, unloved, and uncared for.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

Drawn by its mission to bring hope to the homeless and hungry, I’ve filled a multitude of roles at Cy-Fair Helping Hands during my decade volunteering there. Bolstered by the grateful expressions of pantry clients and the caring individuals who mirror my own passion to serve. In this small but mighty ministry, I am making a difference.

SHARE A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOURSELF.

My journey to professional organizing began when my grandmother started going blind. I was worried she could get injured with all the “knick knacks” in her apartment. When I finished organizing her apartment, I looked around in awe and instantly knew I could do this for others. I’m careful to tailor my organizing our client’s needs and my team and I are empathetic and nonjudgemental. We know and understand organizational struggles!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY ON LIFE?

“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”

WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

Developing the CURE method;  a simple step-bystep process that continues to help many. Each step is designed to remove the overwhelming feelings and provide motivation.

WHO IS THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST AND WHY?

I’ve always loved Princess Diana. Waking at 4 am to watch her wedding as a child is still such a fresh memory. Princess Diana always used her status to help others. She was a strong philanthropic patroness that led with a servant’s heart.

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Don’t be afraid to take risks. Giving in to self-doubt held me back for many years but once I gave myself permission to do what I love, I have been so happy. My team feels the same joy that I do!  It’s been an incredible journey.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

I’m currently in the NCL with my daughter and Young Men’s Service League with my son. I’m a 3rd Generation Girl Scout troop leader! My team and I volunteer our time and donations with many local charities. I believe that you get back tenfold what you give– if you give without the expectation of receiving, I know I have for sure.

SHARE A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOURSELF

Native to Cypress, I was a member of Cy-Ranch’s second-ever graduating class. It was at Texas A&M that I fell in love with my husband–and with being an Aggie. Whoop! I was so excited to return home to fulfill my dream of becoming a dentist. In our spare time, my husband and I enjoy spending time outdoors with our dog, trying new restaurants, and cheering on the Texas A&M and Houston sports teams!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY ON LIFE?

Work hard, treat people right, and trust in God’s plan.

WHO IS THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST, AND WHY?

My mom. She is the most resilient woman that I know. No matter what obstacle is thrown her way, she overcomes it. She has always inspired me to be the best version of myself and never let anything or anyone get in my way of achieving my goals.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?

An instructor in dental school loved to tell a football story and repeat the line “never celebrate until you cross the finish line”. This resonates with me because it reminds me to always give 110% until the very end of any task, whether that be at work or in my personal life.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

Through my patients!  Recently, our office donated oral hygiene goodie bags to the Cy-Ranch softball team to take on an overnight hotel stay for a playoff game. I love being able to support my patients during this exciting time and to reminisce on the days when I was on the Cy-Ranch softball team.
