LIFESTYLE LETTER

Renewed Hope in the New Year For many of us, this time of year is full of promise and excitement. It presents us with a reset, a do-over. There is something so wonderfully clean and fresh about a new beginning; a renewal of all things that we long for. When I was twelve years old, I jumped on the bandwagon and decided to make my first-ever New Year's resolution. I resolved to keep a journal every day for a year. Speaking out of their own experience, everyone said I’d give up before the end of January. Because of that doubt, my stubbornness kicked in. I come from a long line of stubborn women so, of course, I proceeded to write in my journal every single day for not only the entire year, but for four subsequent years. What started as proving something to myself (and maybe a little bit to the naysayers) turned into a habit that I loved–and a beautiful feeling of accomplishment. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, relationships, and health – it's not about perfection. Sometimes it is just about taking baby steps and finding the seemingly elusive balance in life. If we falter, instead of giving up, let’s give ourselves the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them–and then keep going! In this issue of Cypress Lifestyle we’re not about quick fixes and box-checking for the short term, but in valuing what is sustainable over time. I had the pleasure of sitting down with five local doctors, who are also members of our Cypress community, and they shared a little bit about what motivates them, personally and professionally–all truly inspirational men and women! Here’s to you, Cypress! We’re rooting for you!

Here’s some news to cheer about: the CFISD Board of Trustees passed its fourth consecutive annual budget that featured a tax decrease from the prior year. The proposed rate of $1.2948 is down $.0444 from the year before. When paired with a 20% CFISD optional homestead exemption and a $40,000 state exemption, a CFISD taxpayer with a home valued at $350,000 would pay a tax based on $240,000 of value. Choose CFISD.

ARTICLE BY LAURA SANCHEZQUAN

What inspired you to become a doctor? What made you choose your specialized field? I broke my arm playing football in high school, after the experience with my orthopedic surgeon I knew I wanted a career in healthcare. My freshman year at Texas A&M I had the opportunity to shadow a local dentist and loved every moment of it. Dentistry is unique because it’s more than just science, there’s a special art that is required to build teeth and make them look aesthetically pleasing. What is the one thing you want people to know about your practice? Our practice is built for any age and we want patients to feel like family! We strive to help solve any dental need in the most comfortable manner. Towne Lake Dentistry has invested in the newest technology and we are proud to be entirely digital; x-rays, electronic record keeping, and even digital impressions. What is on your bucket list? I’d love to travel to the amazon river to catch Peacock bass! What do you like to do for fun or relaxation? Anything outdoors or sports-related! My biggest passion is wading the Texas coast for speckled trout in my free time. What is something about you people would be surprised to find out? My childhood dream was to become a rodeo clown! What inspired you to become a doctor? What made you choose your specialized field? Since I was little, I knew I wanted to work in medicine. My dad bought me a “doctor kit” when I was around six years old. I would check my stuffed animals and my parents and I loved making sure the people I cared about were healthy and I loved solving problems. My parents inspired me to dream big, so I did! Being a doctor fulfills my passion to care for others, while being able to solve problems to the best of my ability. I always wanted to be able to have time with my patients, optometry allows me to see so many aspects of their health, far beyond their eyes alone. It also lets me connect and get to know my patients and their families! Why did you open your practice in Cypress? Once we had children, my husband and I chose to relocate to Cypress. We knew it had so much potential for growth and the community and schools are extraordinary. I wanted to build a business in the community where I live, to be connected in the community both professionally and personally. What is the one thing you want people to know about your practice? My mission through my practice is to deliver the most personalized eyecare experience. I strive to provide the most comprehensive eye care with the highest level of technology; treating every patient as I would my own family. Plus, our optical boutique is beautiful and welcoming! Combining my passion for technology with handcrafted eyewear, we ensure every patient has more than just a basic eye exam. Photography by Natalie J Photography

“I wanted to build a business in the community where I live, to be connected both professionally and personally.”

What are your New Year’s resolutions? My resolution for 2023 is to try my best to find more balance in my life. To work smarter, not harder. To enjoy all of the small moments as much as the big moments. To hug my kids and family more, to laugh more, stress less! What is on your bucket list? To travel the world with my husband and children, to be able to show them the beauty of the world through culture, food, music, and to open their minds to all the possibilities! What is something about you people would be surprised to find out? The most surprising thing may be that I was extremely shy as a child. My mom put me in pageants and speech competitions and that’s where I gained my voice and confidence. I built up my self-image and found my strength! Why did you open your practice in Cypress? It was actually because another chiropractor brought me to the area and suggested we open an office together. He got cold feet, but I had already fallen in love with the idea of starting from scratch in Cypress, specifically Fairfield. It’s been a wild ride, but the Fairfield and Cypress communities have been a great blessing to my family. What is the one thing you want people to know about your practice? My office really tries to do what is best for the patient. I learned early in my education while doing a rotation with a neurosurgeon that healthcare in America is an economic endeavor, but we have referred people to other chiropractors I respect if we can’t get them in quickly enough or they want to use their insurance and I’m not in-network. I’m not a salesman. I’m a chiropractor. Because of this, my patients trust me if I tell them they need to come in more frequently than they want to or they need to have a diagnostic test run. They know it’s a medical decision and not a financial one. What is something about you people would be surprised to find out? I’m going to be a grandpa soon. My daughterin-law is pregnant with our first grandchild. I’m excited, and my wife is over the moon excited! What is your favorite way to give back to the community? My office supports the community in multiple ways, but we are most proud of our work with Greater Grace Ministries at Fairfield Baptist Church. We sponsor a 5K run there that raises funds to support foster and adoptive families, which is a subject near and dear to my own family. What do you like to do for fun or relaxation? I run. Running is my escape and my time to clear my head. I feel more rested and at peace after a good run – whether short or long. I love to run along the bayou and see a little bit of nature preserved in the city. I’ve seen bunnies, turtles, skunks, possums, a variety of birds, and even a fox on a run along the bayou. What is the one thing you want people to know about your practice? We specialize in medical dermatology issues for all ages and provide state of the art cosmetic dermatology treatments like Botox, dermal fillers, and microneedling. In addition to skin cancer screenings, we provide in-house Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a surgical procedure that removes skin cancers especially in cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas with a cure rate of up to 99%. What are your New Year’s resolutions? New Year’s is a time to set new goals and standards to improve your physical and mental health. I also like to rethink my daily skin care regimen as a whole to ensure that my skin is looking as healthy as I feel on the inside. As with other aspects of health, our skincare needs change with age, and this is the perfect time of year to reassess the products we use. I find that many of my patients have similar goals and my team and I spend time individualizing and helping patients meet their skin care needs.

Christopher Downing, M.D., FAAD Houston Dermatology Specialists

“I like to rethink my daily skin care regimen as a whole, to ensure that my skin is looking as healthy as I feel on the inside.”

What is one thing you want to accomplish in 2023? I will be setting daily goals to silence my phone, unplug and enjoy some quality time with family. Studies show that less time spent connected to social media improves your mood and leads to better sleep. Less time spent on the phone is the perfect way to recharge your mental batteries and live in the moment. What do you like to do for fun? I love to play tennis. I started playing several years ago and I still cannot get enough. I’ve met a great community of people out on the tennis courts and I have so much fun playing! What is the one thing you want people to know about your practice? I love my patients, they have been the best and most loyal patients. We strive to do our best every day for the benefit of our patients. What is on your bucket list? Seeing the Seven Wonders of the world! One day we will see them all! What is something about you people would be surprised to find out? I am an avid sports fan! I love the Steelers, the Yankees, and of course– the Houston Astros. I grew up in the northeast so I love watching several teams, but Houston is now home. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I enjoy giving back to the community through involvement in various non-profit organizations. I have been on the boards of several non-profits, including AVANCE, Pratham, and Indo-American Charity Foundation. As a family and as a practice we continue to support many local non-profits financially and through volunteering. What do you like to do for fun or relaxation? I love watching sports and movies together as a family! I love Marvel movies, and enjoy watching them with my son. Superhero movies are a family favorite–we all need Superheros in our lives. That was the inspiration for the practice name and logo - a stomach with a superman inspired shield and mission statement “defenders of the digestive system.” What is the one thing you want to accomplish in 2023? Be a better human being through patience, kindness, and love! Gastrodoxs.com

W H O L E B O DY H E A LT H ARTICLE BY STAFF WRITER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Striving for mental and physical health as a whole body approach

At Cypress Therapy and Counseling they know it takes more than just one approach to finding whole-body health. All of their professional staff work together to provide a comprehensive treatment plan to help clients reach their full potential and health goals. The four most important aspects of seeking whole-body health are: mental health, brain health, gut health, and body movement. For mental wellness, our emotions play a huge role in our thinking and actions. And while emotions are real and quite powerful and compelling; they are not facts. It is important to have a sounding board where we can process our emotions, gain a better understanding of how we feel and why we feel the way we do, and how to handle our emotions. When it comes to brain health, we are understanding more and more about the brain than we ever have before. We understand that the brain connects thoughts, feelings, events, and experiences to create the life we live. We also understand the brain, has the power to heal itself. IASIS, a micro-current neurofeedback, that can give the brain the right circumstances and support for healing. The brain is not the only thing in our bodies that influences our overall health. The gut is the body’s second brain and helps regulate not only our digestion but our mood and the way we think. This second brain is now understood by scientists to be part of our nervous system. Starting from the esophagus and ending in the

24

rectum, our ENS, or enteric nervous system, communicates back and forth with our big brain in powerful ways. There is evidence that gut imbalances can cause shifts in mood contributing to depression and anxiety. Learning how to nourish our bodies promotes positive gut health. Moving our body helps relieve stored stress and signals to the brain to release mood-stabilizing hormones that improve digestion, sleep, and stress management. Studies have shown the movements in yoga to be one such modality. Yoga improves overall health and wellness, increases blood flow, improves strength and flexibility, and can enhance mood and mindfulness. The National Health Institute studies also show yoga helps with weight loss, and combats depression, body inflammation, back pain, and arthritis. Another effective form of body movement is the M.E.L.T. method. M.E.L.T. taps into the automatic regulations of the nervous system to boost control of the supportive qualities of the connective tissue. And so, though M.E.L.T. is not an exercise, it can lead to improved balance in the body, our life, and overall well-being. Transformational To The Core After giving birth to her first son in Dubai in 2011 by cesarean section, Galiya Loustalot knew she needed a new physical challenge for her changing body. She’d had experience with prenatal and postnatal yoga, but she felt she needed to find a way to restrengthen her core muscles. Once she tried Pilates, she fell truly in love. Following a move to Houston and the birth of a second son, Galiya was introduced to Pilates Reformer and her Pilates practice ramped up from there. “I was proud of the transformation my body went through and how far I progressed,” said Galiya. “I remember thinking,

‘Movement heals. My body can do things now that it wasn't able to do yesterday.’ Pilates helped me heal faster, gain more lean muscle, increased my flexibility and mobility, and of course, it gave me confidence and increased my vitality.” As her love of Pilates evolved, she decided it was her calling to learn more about the intricacies of the human body and share her knowledge with the world, so she became a certified Pilates instructor in 2021 and began teaching. In 2022, she opened a boutique-style Pilates studio in Vintage Park called Pilates by Galyia’s Fitness.

Pilates is a low-impact, full mind and body workout that anyone can benefit from. It’s gentle on joints and often used for rehabilitation after injuries and has been proven to increase athletic performance. Ideal for men or women, its primary value is in strengthening the body’s core, but it also improves spine health, breathing control and aids with balance and coordination. “Ultimately, Pilates improves flexibility and strength which is essential in our daily and athletic activity, improves posture, helps to improve mood, and relaxes your mind and body,” said Galiya. “I have been blessed to train people with osteoporosis in their 60’s and joint replacement recipients in their 70’s. I have even been told that I have been an important part of the recovery journey for several cancer patients. Beyond that, I have also trained professional Houston athletes to improve their athletic performance, and everyone in between. I am impassioned by the ability to contribute to their fitness, mobility, and wellness success.”

Pilates by Galiya’s Fitness offers classes for people of different levels of fitness. They offer both group and individual sessions to familiarize them with the different pieces of Pilates equipment: The Reformer, Pilates chair, tower, spine corrector and ladder barrel and introduce them to Pilates fundamentals. At their own pace, practitioners progress to intermediate and advanced classes at higher levels of strength and complexity. Sessions can be purchased in group, private, or duet (2-person) formats. Private and duet classes tend to cater to the specific needs of clients with prior injury or those who desire specialized instruction. Group classes are kept to 6 people maximum which ensures that everyone can more attentive instruction. Private event sessions accommodating 3 to 6 people are also offered as a team-building fitness experience. Regardless of format, workouts are tailored to the abilities of the people in the room. At Galiya’s the focus is on proper form and technique rather than repetition of an incorrect movement as is the case in some other Pilates classes. CONTINUED >

“I remember thinking, ‘Movement heals. My body can do things now that it wasn't able to do yesterday.’”

Galiya’s boutique studio offers a clean, modern, upscale space that welcomes visitors with a variety of classes. It’s fully furnished with top-of-the-line, brand-new equipment with ideal class times for anyone’s schedule starting at 6 a.m. through 7:30 p.m. and classes in between. Utilizing a different payment model from other fitness entities, Galiya’s doesn’t want people to stay away from Pilates because they’re locked into a monthly membership. For that reason, Galiya’s Fitness offers competitively priced Pilates classes on a pay-as-you-go basis, though they do offer generous discounts for people who plan to attend regularly.

CY-WOODS HS STUDENT, ALUMNA CAST IN BROADWAY MUSICAL PARADE

ADAM ES STUDENT RAISES MONEY, DONATES TO SCHOOL FOR PLAYGROUND

CYPRESS RIDGE STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN ATLAS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Cy-Woods senior Erin Doyle and Class of 2016 graduate Ashlyn Maddox were both recently cast in the Broadway musical Parade. Erin has been cast in the lead role of “Mary Phagan,” and Ashlyn has been cast as one of the “Factory Girls,” as well as an ensemble role. Responding to a nationwide open casting for the part of Mary Phaganm (with encouragement from her older sister) Erin submitted a virtual audition, then an in-person callback in New York City. “This is truly a once-in-alifetime moment to have a former student, Ashlyn, and a current student, Erin, in the same show on Broadway at the New York City Center,” said Toby Drake, Cy-Woods head theatre director.

Shivansh Shirodkar, Adam ES second grader, donated $200 to Adam’s PTO for improvements to the campus playground. Shivansh made and sold homemade goods at the Wortham Arts & Crafts Fair, and used his proceeds for the donation. “It makes you feel good to know you’re instilling the right values in your children,” said Sandhyaa Shirodkar, Shivansh’s mother. Shivansh was excited to donate to his school; “It was my idea,” he said. “Kids like the playground so much that I thought donating money to the playground would help more kids have fun.”

Cy-Ridge junior Chirag Maheshwari attended The Atlas Fellowship Summer Program, alongside other talented students from all over the world for an 11-day program near the University of California Berkeley campus. He earned both a $50,000 scholarship and access to additional funding and support for startups, experiments or programs. Chirag completed all high school math courses by the eighth grade, advancing to university-level math computer science courses the same year. Chirag thoroughly enjoyed his time with the fellowship and continues his relationship with the university. The experience will help Chirag continue his interest in artificial intelligence, machine learning and algorithms.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 42
