When you’re planning a vacation there are several things you have to keep in mind. You have to think about hotels, transportation, activities, restaurants and anything else you plan on doing on your trip. You have to make calls, send emails and keep track of reservations and these are some things that can take the fun out of a vacation. Planning can be the most time consuming and stressful part of vacationing but Gerry and Adriana Sarmiento have been solving this problem since 2009. Their travel agency, Mezzanotte Luxury Tours takes the weight of planning off of your shoulders and allows you to simply enjoy your trip. Gerry and Adriana’s journey to starting their own travel agency began in 2009 in their Cypress eatery, Mezzanotte Ristorante. “We have a restaurant we opened 18 years ago and in 2009 Gerry had the idea of visiting Tuscany and going to places and wineries that we were selling wines from at the restaurant.” Said Adriana. “We told a couple of friends and asked for them

to join us and Gerry organized everything: the drivers, memorable restaurants, some cultural experiences and we realized we were very good at the planning and organizing.” Adriana and Gerry continued planning trips for groups of no more than 20, that focused on gastronomy, culture, art, history and leisure. Sometimes, both Gerry and Adriana join the group on the trip and sometimes, they take turns and only one of them goes. “People like that they are not just traveling with a tour director who is completely separate from the group, we are part of the group.” Said Gerry. They have since planned and successfully executed trips to Peru, Argentina, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Mexico. One of their most recent trips was to Northern Italy and this trip, not unlike their other tours, showcased all that Mezzanotte Luxury Tours has to offer. The Northern Italy Tour started on July 26, 2023 in Milan and ended on August 6, 2023 in Lake Como. The group’s adventure began in

Milan at their first hotel, where they all got together for welcome cocktails and a nice dinner. “We like selecting special hotels, not the “Hilton’s” of the world, but hotels with character.” Said Adriana. They spent a few days in Milan, sightseeing and eating and drinking. They visited attractions such as the Duomo, the world’s third largest Catholic church and Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’. The group then traveled by bus, the main mode of transportation on this trip aside from the occasional ferry, to the Piedmont region. They enjoyed fantastic cuisine, a cooking class where they learned to prepare Piedmontese dishes, acclaimed wines and visits to important wineries during their time in the charming hill towns of La Morra and Castiglione Falletto. In the Alba region, the group was able to take part in a unique experience…Truffle hunting! Gerry and Adriana like to make sure the tours not only focus on the food and the wine, but on experiences that the group will remember for a lifetime. “We separated into two groups with guides and truffle hunting dogs, went into the forest and we got to hunt for truffles and to try some food with truffles and everyone really had a lot of fun.” Said Gerry. “It was a nice change from the wineries and restaurants!” Adriana chimed in. The group then made their way to Portofino, where they marveled at the pastel-coloured houses, high-end boutiques and super-yachts before heading to Turin, the capital city of Piedmont, where they enjoyed wonderful museums. The last 3 days

of the trip were spent in Lake Como, where the group enjoyed meals on balconies overlooking the beautiful lake, a luxurious hotel and boat tours. Two members of the Northern Italy tour group had nothing but praises for Mezzanotte Luxury Tours. “We loved the trip. Activities were great, just enough touring and downtime to explore on our own! We really enjoyed the accommodations, they were excellent and over the top and every meal that was offered was a memorable experience.” Said Jeff and Angie. Gerry and Adriana try to give the group a good amount of downtime on these trips. “We try to combine activities and downtime because we know that people will want to explore for themselves or they might want to rest.” Said Adriana. The group are welcome to go off and explore during their downtime, or to enjoy the facilities of the hotel. “Funnily enough, most of the time when we have leisure time, the group will end up wanting to spend time together, we will go get food together or just spend time at the hotel together. We really become like a family, sometimes members of the groups will even get together for dinner at Mezzanotte after the trips.” Said Gerry. Trent Brooks is a man of resilience, hard-work, and dedication. He has an unwavering love for Jesus, community and for good BBQ. As the owner of Brooks’ Place, LLC Trent is constantly adapting to a changing world and economy. Aside from his faith, another constant in his life is outstanding BBQ. Brooks’ Place was originally opened in 2009, by Trent and his wife Norma of 25 years. Devastatingly, in 2017, Norma passed away after a vicious battle with cancer. As Trent describes her, Norma was a strong and very wise woman; she was his rock and his everything. “It’s hard to find a love like that today,” Trent says, forever changed since her passing. A year or so after his beloved Norma passed-away, Trent had a dream. In the dream, Norma came to him and said; “peaches and bacon.” The night of the dream was also the night before a big local event, A Taste of Cy-Fair, where Trent had committed to serve a “two-ounce bite.” In the weeks leading up to the

event, Trent hadn’t been able to choose just the right dish to offer. The morning of the event (which was also the morning after the dream) he woke from the dream a little bewildered and slightly confused. As the dedicated husband he always was, he followed Norma’s advice from his dream, and purchased an abundance of bacon and peaches. That day Norma’s Dream was born and added to the menu. “It’s a slice of peach with brown sugar cayenne pepper bacon. You have to take it like a shot together in one bite to really get it!” Trent says. “Bacon makes everything better, right?” Brooks’ Place has revitalized their menu to keep up with the times and with the demand of the local community. The new menu features a section categorized as Revolvers, which includes roughly a dozen revolving menu items to accompany classic favorites, old and new. He’s created a fantastic selection of the best BBQ you can find.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO GIFT A FUR-EVER HOME If you are looking to add a furry friend to your family this year, you can help save a life by adopting a pet from a local shelter or rescue organization. Cypress’ Big Love Rescue saves and finds homes for lost or abandoned dogs across the greater Houston area. The organization does not have a facility, but instead utilizes foster homes to help care for the dogs until they are healthy enough for adoption. “We rescue from shelters to the streets,” said Christina Sims, Board for Director member for Big Love Rescue. “We help owners that can no longer keep their dogs. We also spay and neuter owned dogs and dogs on the street, because stopping the cycle is the only solution to this.”

Houston-area shelters receive thousands of abandoned or stray animals each year. Due to oversaturation at the shelters and not enough homes, many unadopted dogs and other animals often end up euthanized. Sims explains that choosing to adopt a rescued pet helps decrease the overpopulation cycle. “Rescuing those dogs makes room for more dogs, and obviously you’re rescuing a dog that would have most likely died,” Sims said. Sims adds that adoption also helps fight against illegal breeding practices that keep dogs in unethical environments, also known as “puppy mills.” Big Love Rescue takes in all dogs, regardless of breed and size. Although many rescues are mixed

breeds, rescue groups and shelters often have purebred dogs available for adoption. However, Sims warns that it’s important to research the breed first, since many purebreds frequently end up abandoned, such as German Shepherds, Pitbulls, Huskies, and Labrador Retrievers. “Getting a dog that’s a fit for the lifestyle not just based on looks is so important,” she said. “That’s what you get to know with a dog in a foster home because they’ve been in a home. You know if they are crate trained, house trained and how they are with other dogs, cats and kids. You can place them in the appropriate home.” Adopting from a rescue or shelter is also a more cost-effective choice. Big Love Rescue’s adoption fee is $350, while many breeders can charge between $500 and $3,000. Along with the adoption fee, Big Love Rescue provides the dogs with microchips and addresses their medical needs, including vaccinations, spay and neuter treatments, and heartworm and flea prevention. “The adoption fee doesn’t cover all that we have to put into the dog, but it helps us continue to be able to save more dogs,” Sims said. “We have to fundraise a lot, because we have some dogs that have cost us $10,000, and we have some dogs that have cost us $5,000. We rarely have a dog that comes in as healthy and doesn’t cost over $350, but that is our adoption fee.” Because rescued animals often suffer from unknown histories and trauma, Sims said the organization also provides

a behavioral training program for foster owners who care for dogs that are learning to trust again. “We’ve been able to successfully adopt out dogs that have had issues just by working with them through the trainer and the foster,” she said. “Because honestly for us, behavioral training is just as important as medical (treatment) to help these dogs become adoptable and work through anything that they have.” Big Love Rescue’s adoption application and available dogs can be found on their website or through PetFinder.com. To ensure they place a dog in the appropriate home, the application process incudes information about current pets, a home check and a meeting between the potential owner and dog. “As a rescue, we need to be very careful about where we place our dogs,” she said. For those who might not be ready to commit to adopting a dog long-term, fostering through a rescue group is a great alternative. When it comes to fostering through Big Love Rescue, Sims said they cover all the medical treatments, supplies, and whatever the foster needs to help prep the dog for adoption. “I always try to tell people that fostering saves lives, literally,” she said. “Your heart breaks a little bit, but you just saved a dog.” Learn more about the adoption or fostering process at bigloverescue.org or follow Big Love Rescue on Facebook for frequent updates about adoption events, fundraisers and more.
