Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something or makes us think more deeply about the world. I have always had a great respect and appreciation for those who can create something from nothing and make the world just a little bit more interesting because of their creation. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. This month, I know I’ll be making more time to spend in my garden with my little one, Grace. It’s our special place where we can create, enjoy the sunshine and get a little dirty. It’s what we love and brings us much joy. So, this month, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball), remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. Swinging from a flying trapeze might sound like an act reserved only for daredevil acrobats, but learning this classic circus technique is made simple at Texas Circus and Aerial studio. The school’s new Cypress studio is home to Houston’s first outdoor flying trapeze open to the public and perhaps the only place you can learn to swing, flip and contort like a professional acrobatic without joining the circus. Students can climb to the top of the trapeze, hook up to a harness and experience being caught mid-air in the same way one might see during a jaw-dropping acrobatic performance at Cirque du Soleil. “It really is incredible to support these [kids], men and women as they achieve things they never thought possible,” says Kenali Kendrick, who co-owns Texas Circus and Aerial. Kenali runs the studio alongside fellow aerialist Andrea Quintero. Together the two women have pioneered circus arts training in Houston by making what was once an exclusive art form accessible to families and kids–no fancy costumes required. The school teaches safe techniques and proper ways to perform on different aerial apparatuses such as silks, hoop, bungee, and trapeze. They also offer classes for aerial yoga, dance and hand balancing.

ARTISTS OF THE AIR Kenali and Andrea began training in other performing arts before becoming aerialists–a term which describes acrobats who perform exclusively while suspended in the air. Ten years ago, Kenali was a cheer and gymnastics coach when she took her first aerial arts class. She never looked back. Andrea, a former dancer, trained at an aerial arts and yoga school in her native Venezuela before becoming a coach. The two met at an aerial arts studio in Fulshear where Kenali worked as a program director and Andrea coached. Not long after, the studio abruptly closed when the owner’s wife died suddenly. With no place to continue their art, studio members were distraught and begged Kenali and Andrea to create a new studio. On a leap of faith, the two women found a new location within a week and opened Texas Circus and Aerial’s first location in Katy in July 2019. Six months later, the pandemic hit and made operating the gym incredibly difficult. Two two pressed on, however, and made plans to open their Cypress studio, complete with enough property to house the flying trapeze. The studio opened last August, and in January debuted its much-anticipated flying trapeze. Classes were immediately sold out. CONTINUED >

STRENGTH AND GRACE The lure of aerial performance comes perhaps from the mix of strength and grace it takes to perform suspended in the air. Aerialists must be physically strong enough to support their own body weight yet creative and flexible enough to contort into a host of aesthetically pleasing shapes. Both Kenali and Andrea stress, however, that no experience is needed to start learning and immediately performing basic skills. The flying trapeze is open to people without any previous training. And in aerial silks– the studio’s most popular class– first-time students can learn how to hang upside down during their first session. “Even a complete beginner with no athletic background or dance background can walk in and be completely astonished with themselves because of what they’re able to do when their mind and body is working together in that kind of situation,” Kenali says. Aerial art is not only fun to learn and watch, but it makes for a great workout and confidence booster. Staying or getting fit, in fact, is a big reason why most of their students practice at the studio. Many of the movements engage the body’s core muscles yet are easier on the joints than weight-bearing fitness routines. And with so much spinning, flipping and stretching during aerial art routines, it’s easy to forget how much you’re moving your body.

“You don’t feel like you’re working out,” Andrea says. “You’re just having so much fun until the next day when your body is sore.” The mental health benefits are quite real as well. As students lose weight, gain flexibility and strength, they grow more confident, more focused and able to attempt more daring techniques. “When you’re doing it you’re unable to focus on anything else,” Kenali says. “It truly is an escape from anything else that could possibly be happening in your mind.”

PERFORMERS AT HEART Although many Texas Circus and Aerial students are beginners aiming to get a creative workout, the studio also trains aspiring professionals. Young performers can audition for their junior performance team and prepare for entering a more advanced circus arts program such as the New England Center for Circus Arts. Kenali and Andrea also choreograph, produce and create a professional showcase called Fenyx which features dancing acts, magicians and more. Traveling to Chamonix, France was not feasible last year so my family opted for a ski vacation closer to home in Colorado. Visiting Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado can be an ideal way to spend your winter holiday. And yes, you can do it all during a winter school break. Aspen is renowned for its incredibly dreamy winter experiences and celebrity sightings. And this year is even more special because @AspenSnowmass is celebrating 75 years of skiing, offering guests four world-class mountains to choose from: Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk. These mountains offer a wide variety of terrain perfect for everyone from beginner to expert and this year’s celebratory events include Luminescence in Snowmass, Winterskol in Aspen, XGames at Buttermilk and so much more.

RUNWAY TO SLOPESIDE IN MINUTES Aspen is in the Roaring Fork Valley, southeast of Vail, and there are plenty of ways to reach the ski resort. Few mountain resorts have the airport proximity that Aspen Snowmass enjoys. Located just 5 minutes from Buttermilk (and 10 minutes from Snowmass/Aspen Mountain), the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport accommodates flights from major U.S. airports on United, Delta, and American Airlines. Other nearby airports include Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) and Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT). Denver International (DEN) is 220 miles away from the Aspen Valley if you want to rent a car. We stayed in an Airbnb between Aspen Snowmass and Sunlight Ski Resort. We also found the best après-ski fun at the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. I suggest the Roaring Fork Transit buses if you want to get on the slopes earlier than your group. These buses run the entirety of the Roaring Fork Valley and can get you around easily and many (but not all) routes are free. Free routes include all City of Aspen routes and Snowmass Village routes. The Snowmass Village Shuttle is also free to ride. RFTA’s real time bus information is available in an easy-to-use mobile app called Transit. CONTINUED >

WHERE TO STAY? When you’re looking for the perfect place to rest your head after a day on the slopes, look no further than Airbnb or VRBO for your accommodations — you’ll find an amazing selection of great places to stay in the Roaring Fork Valley, but our Airbnb called “AspenWood” - located between Aspen & Glenwood Springs - was one of our faves. Located on the banks of the Roaring Fork River, this 4 bdrm/3.5 ba home is a 35 min drive to Aspen/Snowmass Ski Resort and Sunlight Ski Resort in Glenwood Springs. This beautiful river compound was like our own tiny resort without the crowds. With unsurpassed views of the Roaring Fork River, 2 fireplaces in the Great Room including radiant heating, a gourmet kitchen with amenities fit for a professional chef, and an 8-person Sundance Optima hot tub overlooking the river, we wished we could have stayed longer! For planning, you’ll want to check out how easy it is to drive to your

accommodation because some rental homes are difficult to reach if your rental car does not have 4-wheel drive. Luckily, our Airbnb was located down a regularly snow-plowed road with “driveway snowmelt” making the home easily accessible during snowstorms. There was also a bus stop two minutes away and we could simply hoist our skis onto the exterior bus ski carriers, leaving the driving to someone else! And our Airbnb host offered to drive us if we didn’t feel like walking to the bus stop. We love a SuperHost!

SKI RESORT LIFT TICKETS & RENTAL GEAR The Aspen Snowmass 2021-22 ski season runs through early to mid-April, depending on the mountain. Candles are a guilty pleasure for Nickie Crow. They set the mood for the environment, evoke memories and can lift the spirit. In 2010, after her favorite candle shop closed, she began making her own candles by choosing unique scents and hand-pouring each one. Soon after, she launched her own line of stylish, hand-poured candles called The French Market Candle Company. Some of her favorite scents include oak moss and amber as well as her signature French Market scent. Nickie’s greatest joy is seeing her customers experience her candles in their own homes.

“We want people to feel welcomed. Like everyone belongs. We are all just a little misfit anyways, right?” A hidden little spot on Cypress Rosehill Road is home to one of Cypress’s newest craft brewing operations, Misfit Outpost. A collaboration between Fortress Beerworks in Spring and local brewer Juan Sanchez, Misfit is a hub for lovers of craft beer, live music and hearty bar food. The restaurant and eclectic brewery offers Juan’s unique beers alongside a menu of hefty burgers, chicken tenders, and fried pickles. The place will even get its own elaborate brewing system installed later this year. Misfit’s backyard is a cozy mix of outdoor and indoor seating options all of which offer a great place to experience its live music stage, where local vocalists and bands regularly perform. Kids are also welcome. Misfit’s backyard play area has a creatively refurbished school bus and giant tractor tires for climbing or hiding. We reached out to brewery owners Juan and Kevin Smith to learn more about their latest enterprise.

WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MISFIT AND FORTRESS BEERWORKS? Kevin: Fortress is an existing brewery in Spring that we aligned with early on in this project. Juan Sanchez and Dion Billard collaborated on an incredible beer called Northwest Corridor that really took the Hazy IPA market by storm and it made us all take a step back and think, wow, maybe there is something special here. The synergy became natural in that Fortress could aid in infrastructure and start-up while Misfit got the operation engaged. The idea of Fortress supporting a local homebrew superstar like Juan bred another model whereby maybe this won’t be the only time the two groups lock up to open a facility in the Houston area. This Double IPA is meant to pack a punch at 8.7% ABV. With notes of citrus and malt, it’s a pleasing treat best enjoyed alongside good friends and tasty burgers. WHAT SETS THE MISFIT BRAND APART FROM OTHER BREWING COMPANIES HERE IN THE HOUSTON AREA? Juan: We like to strive for an eclectic vibe with a macabre art twist. We are big fans of local and unique art pieces of all types. We take this concept and try and make our beers equally as unique.

TELL ME ABOUT SOME OF YOUR MOST POPULAR BREWS. Juan: We started off known for our IPAs and as we experimented and learned various other brewing techniques and styles, we came up with a beer known as Draven, a black pilsner. We have begun to see its reputation grow as we keep getting requests for this style, a classic pilsner–clean and refreshing– but black in color with dark roast and coffee aromatics. It is definitely an experience to have this beer.

WHAT IS IT YOU HOPE YOUR CUSTOMERS WILL EXPERIENCE AT MISFIT? Kevin: I hope they feel the fact that local guys wanted to create a place to actually hang out with their own families. This is a place where you’ll see my own daughter running around on Friday afternoon, my wife and her friends listening to music, etc. We want people to feel welcomed. Like everyone belongs. CFISD THEATRE ARTS STUDENTS EXCEL AT TEXAS THESPIAN FESTIVAL More than 130 theatre arts students from 10 CFISD high schools received first and second place rankings at the 2021 Texas Thespian Festival in November and have qualified for the national competition, sponsored by the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), scheduled for June at Indiana University in Bloomington.

BRIDGELAND STAR NAMED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL QUARTERBACK OF THE YEAR Bridgeland football standout Conner Weigman was named the National High School Quarterback of the Year by the National Quarterback Club. Weigman, who is regarded as one of the nation’s top-ranked quarterbacks for the Class of 2022, will be recognized during the 2021 National Quarterback Club Awards Dinner and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in February. Weigman, a three-year starter for Bridgeland, helped lead the Bears to an 11-3 record and appearance in the Division II-6A Region II final this season.

VOLLEYBALL STANDOUTS EARN CITYWIDE, ALL-STATE, ALLAMERICAN ACCOLADES Numerous CFISD volleyball players earned greater Houston, statewide and national postseason honors for the 2021 season. Among them were Bridgeland senior Mallorie Garner. She was named the All-Greater Houston Player of the Year by the Houston Chronicle, made the VYPE Houston Magazine first team, earned all-state honors by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) and made the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association (GHVCA) postseason team. Cy-Ranch High School senior Kailee Gims and Cy-Falls senior Abbie Smith were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American team.

DISTRICT WRESTLERS EARN MEDALS AT CFISD INVITATIONAL The Cy-Ranch girls’ team finished as the district’s highest-placing representative winning third and giving them four top-four finishes in the last five invitationals. Other CFISD girls’ teams to place among the top 25 teams were Cy-Springs, Cy-Ridge and Cy-Creek. In the boys’ tournament, Cy-Ranch had the highest finish among CFISD teams, placing 11th giving the four consecutive top-15 finishes. Two CFISD wrestlers earned individual championships. Langham Creek’s Annika Gotlieb won the 128-pound division, achieving her 100th career victory. On the boy’s side, Cy-Ranch’s Xavior Harrell won the 120-pound division.

At Towne Lake Dentistry, crafting great smiles means making patients feel welcome and at ease. That’s the experience Dr. Trey Patterson and Dr. Lynsey Hackler hope to create at their dental practice. The brother-and-sister dentist duo are the main providers at the family-owned and operated Towne Lake Dentistry. It’s a place Dr. Trey likes to call a small-town dentist office in a big city. The two are friendly, youthful, and both proud Aggies. Towne Lake Dentistry offers everything from routine dental checkups to smile makeovers, but Dr. Trey and Dr. Lynsey like to think that their work goes beyond the dental exam.

“It’s not just about fixing someone’s problem or writing a prescription when they’re sick,” Dr. Trey says. “You’re following somebody for 20 or 30 years. You have a professional and personal relationship. You get to know them.” With Dr. Trey at the helm, the office opened its doors in March 2020 at the location that was formerly Active Life Dentistry. Dr. Trey practiced with Active Life for seven years before purchasing the business and rebranding as Towne Lake Dentistry last year. Soon after, Dr. Lynsey joined her older brother at the new practice along with their mother who works as the office receptionist.

Aside from dentistry, the two siblings have much in common from their faith to their alma mater. Both attend Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church. Both graduated from Texas A&M with their bachelor’s degrees. Both are also local. Dr. Trey is a Houston native and Dr. Lynsey is a Cy-Ranch High School graduate. The two are just five years apart in age and share a love of people, professional collaboration and a mindset focused on excellence. “We’re both very meticulous in our treatments,” Dr. Lynsey says. “We’re very hard on ourselves and only expect the best. We want to make sure the patient is happy with the result.” When it comes to patient care, the two doctors like to take a conservative approach. Rather than pushing expensive treatment options or the latest dental product, the two focus on getting to the root of each patient’s needs, whether they need an emergency extraction or fixing a chipped tooth. Dr. Trey and Dr. Lynsey offer a gentle approach to dentistry, especially when it comes to patients who have anxiety about seeing a dentist. Showing true compassion and care is paramount, they say. Talking more in-depth with those patients and understanding the origin of their fear is key. “We just talk to them like a friend,” says Dr. Trey. “Is it the noise? Did they have a bad experience? You ask these things so you can get to the root of the problem–no pun intended.” Once the dentists learn what makes a patient anxious, they’re better able to adapt their approach or offer sedation options to make dental procedures more comfortable for the patient. One way to ease the anxiety around dental visits is by booking regular cleanings and exams so dentists can catch any problems before they start. Dr. Trey and Dr. Lyndsey recommend dental cleanings twice a year and suggest for people to book a visit even if they are not experiencing acute tooth pain. Since the pandemic began, Dr. Trey has seen more patients with jaw pain or facial pain as a result of nighttime teeth grinding. If left untreated, teeth grinding can lead to

disrupted sleep, inflamed facial muscles and headaches. People experiencing such symptoms may never realize this pain can be tooth-related, which is exactly why Dr. Trey suggests routine dental visits. And helping relieve people’s pain is what keeps Dr. Trey in the business. “It makes me feel like I’m doing what I’m meant to do,” he says. “You’re able to affect someone’s life in multiple ways.” For Dr. Lyndsey, the feeling is similar.
