SPILLANE MIDDLE STUDENT RAISES MONEY FOR ORANGUTANS Armaan Kamdar, a 12-year-old Spillane Middle School student, is power washing with a purpose. The Coles Crossing resident is raising money to support orangutan survival and research by offering to power wash nearby neighborhood driveways. His service starts at $50 a driveway and is only available for the summer. Armaan learned about the orangutan's "critically endangered" status as part of a school project and wanted to find a way to help. The animal's survival is threatened due to mass deforestation and humans capturing orangutans for pets. Armaan hopes by preserving the orangutan species, scientists can learn more about themselves. “By learning about orangutans, we can also learn a lot about how humans evolved,” he says. Armaan plans to donate his earnings to the Indonesian-based Bornean Orangutan Survival Fund and the World Wildlife Fund. Schedule your driveway cleaning by emailing Armaan at Nipa.PK@gmail.com. MEET THREE AMAZING GIRLS WHO WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD

HANNAH KOTHARI Seventeen-year-old Hannah Kothari is more than a beauty queen. While pageantry is her most public endeavor, the Memorial High School senior is also a published writer, amateur pilot and helps run a nonprofit for hospitalized children. Pageantry, she says, just helped her learn more about herself and what she does. “It really gave everything that I do a little bit more purpose and meaning,” she says. As the Miss Gulf Coast Teen USA titleholder, Hannah stays being a role model and promoting her non-profit, Harrison’s Heroes. Hannah, alongside her parents, started the group in memory of her twoyear-old brother, who had brain surgery and was extensively hospitalized before he died. The goal of Harrison’s Heroes is to bring encouragement and joy to children with long hospital stays throughout Houston. Hannah coordinates volunteers, handles social media and helps arrange gift boxes for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. She also helps host yearly holiday parties and gifts for the kids. Since quarantine, in-person hospital visits have been more difficult, but Hannah is creative. After winning her title in February, Hannah rallied her fellow beauty queens to join in a virtual storytime with the children.

Girls with Goals and Dreams

“The kids just loved seeing real-life princesses reading them a story,” she says. Along with her charity work, Hannah writes for multiple Houston publications—including this one. She also keeps up a poetry blog where writers can submit their work for anonymous publication. The blog, found on her website HannahKothari.com, is a “judgment-free” space where writers can express their emotions and use writing to heal, Hannah says. Channeling her own grief, Hannah even wrote a poetry collection of her own called “Shattered Hearts.” The book gave her closure and she hopes to get it published soon. When she’s not writing or working with Harrison’s Heroes, Hannah is earning her private pilot’s license. She successfully piloted a small aircraft off the ground, flew at 3,000 feet and hopes to finish the program before she leaves for college. Until then, she’s busy prepping for next month’s Miss Texas Teen USA beauty pageant where she will compete against 100 girls for the title.

JADA RAMOS Eleven-year-old Jada Ramos has quite the resume for someone her age. She’s a junior cheerleader with the Houston Texans and performs at a yearly football game at NRG stadium. She’s danced alongside professionals in Houston Ballet’s The Nutcracker. When she’s not dancing, she puts on her crown and attends charity events as a “mini ambassador” for the Miss Houston beauty pageant. She’s collected school supplies and helped with Kids’ Meals Houston. “I really enjoy seeing all the kids’ smiles on their faces when they see the princesses come out in their crowns,” she says. But her journey wasn’t always easy. In 2018, Jada was forced to quit dance and attend school at home after she experienced frightening episodes where she suddenly stopped breathing when she slept or danced. After a year, she was diagnosed with a type of vocal cord dysfunction and had surgery to treat her condition. Now, more than a year since her last attack, Jada is healthy, dancing again and gearing up for her next performance in October with the Texans cheer team.

ANIMAL KINGDOM (CONTINUED)

Old MacDonald’s Farm is entirely family-operated, and the Wilkerson’s hope to keep it that way for generations to come. Susanne and Don are now semi-retired and have passed the farm down to their adult children, Hayley, Mitchell and Logan, who run the day-to-day operations. For the Wilkerson children, farm life has always been their life. The three siblings grew up raising animals, riding horses and helping socialize the critters before they moved to the petting zoo. Hayley, the youngest, remembers once caring for a baby flying squirrel and young wallaby that needed to be socialized before entering the petting zoo. “Those super young animals, you can’t just throw them out in the petting zoo,” she says. “We were the ones who grew up teaching them how to interact.” Allowing children to feed and pet the animals is what sets Old MacDonald’s Farm apart from other animal attractions. Kids learn how to be gentle with the animals and what it takes to care for each species. To give the animals the best quality of life, all are allowed to freely roam the property after hours. The animal’s comfort and happiness really comes first, Susanne says, and kids can learn from that. “Kids can learn to be kind to animals, slow down and think about how everybody’s different,” she says. “But they’re all living together. Everybody’s happy.” OldMacDonaldsFarmTexas.com

WE VISITED WITH DR. LAM OF HDENTAL AT LOUETTA AND GRANT RDS, CYPRESS, ABOUT GOOD DENTAL HABITS FOR KIDS AND WHEN PARENTS SHOULD START TEACHING GOOD DENTAL HYGIENE. WHEN SHOULD A CHILD HAVE THEIR FIRST DENTAL VISIT, AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD THEY GO? Children should have their first visit around six months or as soon as their first tooth erupts. This allows us to start establishing that the dental office is a safe place, so if they ever need treatment in the future, we can carry out treatment with the child’s trust. It also gives us an opportunity to consult with parents on proper oral hygiene and diet. DO CHILDREN NEED TO SEE A PEDIATRIC DENTIST OR DO GENERAL DENTISTS SEE KIDS? I treat children and most general dentists do as well. However, we may refer a child to a pediatric dentist if they need extensive treatment, and if it is in the best interest of the patient due to age, anxiety levels, and cooperativeness. WHEN SHOULD KIDS START BRUSHING THEIR TEETH? Start brushing for children as soon as the first tooth erupts and continue to brush for them until they can do a thorough job. Be sure to use a children’s toothpaste with fluoride that has an American Dental Association seal of approval. For children under 3 years old, use about the size of a grain of rice. For children 3-6 years old, use a pea-sized amount.
