nights are humid and the kids are begging to head to the pool. For many, the summer brings to mind childhood memories of playing in lawn sprinklers, camping outside or listening to the hum of cicadas in the trees. This month we also celebrate Independence Day, a chance to bond with friends and family, light up the grill and watch fireworks illuminate the night skies. It’s a time when we recognize the contributions and sacrifices of Americans—both past and present—who have made our nation great. Summer also offers a great chance to pack up the kiddos and explore our own local Texas history. See what’s offered at the George Ranch Historical Park featured on Page 16, or use our guide on Page 34 to help you plan a beach getaway. If you’re up for a staycation instead, use our summer sangria recipe for a poolside pick-me-up, or visit newly opened Vitality Bowls cafe featured on Page 26 to taste the blueberry-laden Liberty Bowl.

Cypress Lifestyle | July 2019
TAKE A SHORT DRIVE AND TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AT GEORGE RANCH HISTORICAL PARK IN FORT BEND COUNTY. The park, located just 45 miles south of Cypress, tells 100 years of Texas history across four homes where time appears to have stood still. “Our goal is to immerse families in Texas history so you’re not only seeing it, you’re hearing it, you’re touching it,” says Jennifer Farrell, director of marketing for the Fort Bend History Association. The group partners with the park to offer educational programs for kids and families. The 20,000-acre working ranch is home to four historical sites. At the Jones Stock Farm, visitors can experience 1830s settler life complete with hands-on weaving demonstrations and live animals. Next, the Ryon Prairie Home depicts Civil War-era living while the 1890s Davis Victorian Complex features elaborate decor and a working blacksmith shop. The last stop for visitors is the 1930s George Home and Cattle Complex where aspiring cowboys and cowgirls can learn roping skills or watch live cattle demonstrations.

The ranch also offers a special fabric-dyeing workshop to show how settler women brightened their clothing using materials found in nature.

Visit the detached kitchen to see a fully adorned dinner table, or mosey over to the chuck wagon camp to hear stories of Texas cattle drives.

Try your own hand at lassoing during a quick lesson with a cowboy. While at this site, swing by the George Home, the original home of Mamie and A.P. George. The home was designed by renowned Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton, the designer of the famed Bishop’s Palace.

HOME FOR CHILDREN BOYS AND GIRLS COUNTRY OFFERS SAFE HOME FOR CHILDREN IN NEED
WHEN CHILDREN FIND THE BOYS AND GIRLS COUNTRY HOME IN HOCKLEY, THEY’VE FOUND A HOME FOR LIFE. The children at Boys and Girls Country come mostly from impoverished Houston-area families who are unable to provide for their needs. While most children in group-living centers will eventually age out of their program, those at Boys and Girls Country continue receiving support even as they grow into adulthood.

HELPING CHILDREN AS THEY GROW Last year, for instance, the organization launched a program to help 13 high school seniors transition to college-style adult housing while still living on the Boys and Girls Country campus. The students moved into a special cottage and signed contracts to maintain their living space and behavior. They completed a special curriculum, continued their studies and some even held jobs all while learning to share a living space. The campus also offered on-site mentors dedicated to helping young adults with everything from choosing college classes to writing a resume. WHO THEY ARE For nearly 50 years, the organization has housed, clothed and supported nearly 1,500 children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their mission is simple: change children’s lives by nurturing them in a Christian home environment and raising them to become self-sustaining adults. Children are offered counseling, medical care, sports activities and a stable home environment. The deeply Christian organization provides students with live-in “teaching parents” who attend church with students, study the Bible, help with homework, cook meals and live in the same cottage with the children year-round. WAYS TO HELP Boys and Girls Country receives zero state funding and relies entirely on private donors for support. Last year, expenses were about $5.8 million, but local donors and fundraisers throughout the year help provide. Give Money – Donate as little as $10 online through the Boys and Girls Country website. Donate Items – Donate used furniture, clothing or household items. Items that can’t be used on campus will be donated to a partner consignment shop. Donate Books – Fill the campus library with gently used books published within the last 10 years. Shop at Amazon.com – Register Boys and Girls Country as your preferred charity via Amazon Smile. A small percentage of your purchase will be donated to Boys and Girls Country. Become a Sponsor – Volunteer or donate to one of the organization’s three annual events: Spring Festival, Pedal for a Purpose Bike Ride or the Heritage Award Dinner.

2019 cypress cay seabreeze pontoon boat CYPRESS CAY’S SEABREEZE 233 IS A GREAT FAMILY-FRIENDLY PONTOON BOAT
ARTICLE COURTESY OF BOATINGMAG.COM PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CYPRESS CAY PONTOONS 28
Cypress Lifestyle | July 2019
CYPRESS CAY PROVIDES A GREAT FAMILY-FRIENDLY PONTOON BOAT IN THE NEW SEABREEZE 233. The Mercury FourStroke 150 outboard motor with a quiet but gutsy Mercury FourStroke 150 outboard went from 0 to 30 mph in just 6.9 seconds, planed in 3.5 seconds and topped out at just over 37 mph with the engine revving at 5,500 rpm. The decibel meter barely broke 80 decibels even at full speed. This package is thrifty too. The most economical cruising speed occurred at 15.8 mph, where we burned 3.5 gallons per hour (4.5 mpg). Above deck, the Seabreeze sported two long and plush inward-facing loungers in the bow section, with the captain’s helm and seating just aft. The helm is well-equipped, with a smart-looking smoked-acrylic windscreen, analog gauges, Kicker sound system and Lowrance graph. Just behind it is a unique double-bench convertible lounger that works well as fore- and aft-facing benches. Or with the addition of center filler benches, the lounger converts into a wide relaxation station great for sunbathing, napping or both. The seat back on the forward couch swings fore and aft, so the couches can face each other, or both can face forward. Two can fit comfortably on each one. This is all surrounded by perimeter fencing with powder-coated railings and a black anodized rub rail. The lighting package on our test boat included red-blue-green fluid rope lighting under the seat bases and in cup holders. See the full review at BoatingMag.com.
