Each object holds endless possibility. “Stuff like this,” he says, inspecting a gnarled metal object. “I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, but it’s too good to trash.” André is an industrial folk artist who crafts exquisite metal sculptures composed exclusively of junk metal parts otherwise destined for a landfill. Each random metal part forms the basis of something entirely new. Shelving brackets might become wings for a bird, an old lawnmower blade forms the bird’s face and a drill bit its tail. It’s a practice André calls found-object art. “I think it excites the child in me,” he says. Perhaps his most eye-catching local work is the 7-foot purple elephant in front of the Purple Elephant Art Community on McSwain Road. It took André three years to weld the elephant using heaps of metal he collected in his driveway. “I went in without any idea or concept of what I was trying to do,” he says, laughing. Over the years, 79-year-old André developed a knack for creating metal critters. He’s skillfully sliced, welded and painted more than 300 sculptures of vibrant flowers, metal birds, alligators, insects—even humans.

His art is funky, visually fascinating and crafted with extraordinary detail. His most captivating work is something called a sand writer, a pendulum sculpture that when touched draws designs on a sand-filled basin. A recent stroke has slowed André down. His days of traveling art shows are over. He now invites visitors to his backyard gallery to view or purchase his art, but his creativity is nowhere near finished. “I still have some creativity," he says. It’s springtime in Texas. Bluebonnets are in full bloom, barbecue grills beckon from back porches and weekend brunches might now include frozen drinks to keep the afternoon heat at bay. It’s a time when we might open our homes for entertaining and welcoming in the new season. “The earth is blooming, and it’s a really nice fresh start to the year,” says Cypressbased lifestyle expert Alley Leto. “It’s great to bring people together to celebrate that.” For Alley, the key to hosting a festive spring dinner is this: keep it simple and enlist help. She breaks down her process into three easy steps: create a vision, get a guest list and then decide the details. Step one: Set your vision. Will your party be indoors or outdoors? Formal or informal? What time of day? If you’re planning a spring theme, think of ideas or concepts that naturally come to mind and try to incorporate them into your decor or food. “When I think of spring, I think of fun, happy, bright, airy,” she says. “It’s a celebration of new beginnings and a new season in our lives.” For this month’s styled shoot, Alley worked with the Royal Standard, a home decor shop at the Boardwalk in Towne Lake, to make her spring dinner party ideas come alive. petal-shaped edges, wicker plate chargers and pink Japanese magnolia blossoms. When it comes to food, keep meals easy and light. Grilled chicken and veggies or salmon alongside seasonal greens such as broccoli, carrots or asparagus are Alley's suggestions. She also suggests twisting up traditional table wine by serving it frozen. Use a freezable cocktail maker to make something known as frosé, a frozen rosé wine slushie, to get guests mingling. “I love having pieces at the table that can help break the ice,” she says. Step two: Get the guest list going. How many will you have? Do you want a sprawling party or something more intimate? Decide on a crowd size that’s comfortable for you. “If you’re not a party-thrower, keep your party small so it’s not overwhelming.” Also, consider whether or not you’ll want children present, and communicate your wishes early with guests. Children can easily change the mood of a

party, and guests may need advanced notice to plan for babysitters if kids won't be joining parents for dinner. Step three: Decide the details. Figure out what items you’ll create yourself and what you might outsource. Alley suggests getting help from places like the Royal Standard for styling your party decor or get food catered from eateries like Flying Vine Lakeside Grill at the Boardwalk in Towne Lake. “You can still have a fancy little party at your house, and no one needs to know it was catered,” Alley says. The restaurant supplied grilled chicken breasts with peppers alongside sauteed broccoli and a mixed greens salad while Iced Cupcakery provided tasty desserts. MIKHAIL GORYACHEV WAVES A FLAMING BLOW TORCH ACROSS A STEAMING S’MORES CREPE JUST LONG ENOUGH TO TOAST THE MARSHMALLOW SUGAR. He is quick but precise as he readies his culinary masterpiece for its final destination: a hungry 10-year-old customer at his countertop. Tonight, the boy’s choice for dinner was clear: Nyam Nyam Cafe. “If I give them a choice of restaurant, this is what they choose,” says Michele Norton, a Fairfield mom who frequents the eatery with her son and daughter. Nestled in a quiet business strip near the intersection of Mason Road and Cypresswood Drive, Nyam Nyam Cafe is anything but conventional. Here, customers might feast on Ukrainian-style crepes stuffed with Nutella or enjoy a hearty Hungarian goulash, a traditional vegetable stew. “We decided to open up to different taste buds and what people like around here,” Mikhail says. The s’mores crepe, for instance, was born from sweet-toothed customer suggestions. Mikhail and his wife, Nataliya, first opened the restaurant four years ago to fulfill a lifelong dream. It’s now a trendy local hot spot offering food that’s quick, delicious and exotic. On the menu is a surprising array of scrumptious foods: curry halal chicken kebabs are served alongside Malaysian flatbread, and lamb shank is paired with homemade hummus. Nyam Nyam’s food is deeply inspired by the Goryachevs' family culture. Mikhail, 49, is a trained chef from Kazakhstan, and Nataliya, a self-taught chef, is from Ukraine. Otto's Emporium: A Charming Furniture Store with One-of-a-Kind Finds

WHEN MIKE BROCKWELL AND HIS WIFE, SHARON, HAD TO MOVE AWAY FROM TEXAS, THEY STILL FOUND LITTLE WAYS TO BRING TEXAS TO THEIR NEW HOME. Sharon, who’d always had an eye for decor and a penchant for shopping, discovered a quaint little store in downtown Tomball called Otto’s Emporium. The store carried rustic furniture and Texas-themed home goods. Soon after, she and her daughters made it a tradition to shop there each time she returned to Texas. Sharon was enamored. “Sharon fell in love with the store,” Mike says. “Every time she would come back, she would buy something that was Texas, and she would take it back to where we were living.”

Years later, when Mike and Sharon finally moved back to Texas, they were eager for something new they could do as a couple. One night, as Mike was in bed scrolling on his iPad, he stumbled across businesses for sale in Tomball when something caught his eye. Otto’s Emporium was for sale. Their decision was easy: they would buy it. Mike and Sharon have owned and operated Otto’s Emporium since 2015. It’s a business that involves nearly every member of their 15-person family. Their three daughters help with sales or social media, their daughters’ husbands help load heavy deliveries, and grandchildren do odd jobs for cash. In a way, running Otto’s Emporium is a perfect fit for Mike and Sharon. Mike is a life-long woodworker, and Sharon is a shopper with a knack for home decor. "Everything's a little different," Mike says, showing off a solid-wood bed frame and headboard he crafted. "It's not a cookie cutter kinda thing." The store holds many of his creations including wooden benches and massive wooden farm tables. Some are stained, painted or otherwise made to look distressed. All are built with passion and care. “We try to build things that are going to last a long time if you take care of them. We’d love our pieces to sustain 20 to 25 or 30 years.” One might feel a tad overwhelmed walking around Otto's Emporium. The 10,000-square-foot shop is home to towering bookcases, antique-replica furniture and rustic conversation pieces. The store is visually exciting with every room sparking curiosity. Despite its sprawling size and mammoth pieces, the store feels cozy, as if customers are walking right into the Brockwell family home. Mike prides himself on not being a "fancy furniture guy." He and his family don't hassle shoppers. They are kind and allow customers to discover their own special piece of Otto's Emporium furniture in their own unique way. “Most of the people want to kind of be left alone to 410 W.
