LIFESTYLE LETTER

A celebration of style When we say “style,” we’re not just talking about the latest trends or what’s hot on the runway. Around here, style runs a little deeper. It’s the way your home feels when you walk through the door. It’s your grandmother’s pearls worn with a crisp white blouse. It’s the way a bride chooses every detail of her wedding day, or how your favorite boutique owner knows just what top pairs with your favorite jeans. Style is personal — and in the South, it’s a reflection of heritage, hospitality and heart. This month, we invite you to flip through with fresh eyes. Whether it’s fashion, home décor, accessories, a stylish ride or even the way someone carries themselves — you’ll find inspiration in every corner. Our September issue celebrates local business owners, creatives and tastemakers who bring style to life in the Cullman area, one unique touch at a time. We encourage you to shop local, support these dreamers and maybe even discover a new favorite piece — or place. Southern style is timeless, rooted in charm, grace and a little bit of bold. Thanks for being a part of our story,

“Facilitating happy patients who are thrilled with their results is the everyday objective at Light Facial Plastic Surgery.” –Dr. Ben Light Light Facial Plastic Surgery in Decatur is owned by Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ben Light, who has an amazing support staff. They’ve been treating patients in north Alabama since 2003. Dr. Light completed a residency in Ear Nose and Throat/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, becoming a board certified ENT surgeon and at the same time undertaking an NIH fellowship in experimental therapeutics for cancer of the head and neck. He followed up with a second fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery at the University of Illinois in Chicago and immediately after began an academic career at the University of Florida as Chief of Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Light explained the academic scene didn’t offer the multigenerational care model he had long aspired to, so after searching for an ideal area to raise a family and provide excellent healthcare, he moved to Decatur and began serving as the region’s specialist in cosmetic facial surgery, skin cancer treatment and reconstruction. For over 20 years, he’s been the only board certified and fellowship trained facial plastic surgeon practicing between the Nashville and Birmingham areas. LFPS offers every quality service and treatment available, all geared to provide maximal therapeutic options for aging facial concerns, including advanced facelift techniques, multiple options for browlift and upper and lower blepharoplasty (eyes). The ablative CO2 outpatient laser resurfacing procedure is providing LFPS patients with results rivaling any provider in the Southeast. In addition to surgical solutions, LFPS specializes in nonsurgical facial treatments such as facial fillers (Juvederm, Sculptra, Radiesse) and neuromodulators (Botox, Xeomin, Jeuvo), plus other technologies like Morpheus8 and Ultherapy. For facial resurfacing there is a whole spectrum of options, from TCA Chemical peels, photofacial resurfacing with fractional erbium, Vbeam and IPL (intense pulse light therapy). “There are so many options these days it’s often confusing to our patients. We help them choose a treatment path that is customized to their needs, fits their goals and offers pleasing results,” said Dr. Light. “Our patients want to look healthy at every age. LFPS provides treatment options that cater to every client’s style, whether they prefer subtle, office-based treatments or more in-depth surgical rejuvenation. Either way, at LFPS we strive to provide natural, refined results.”

Lauren Sharp, RN, with Ben Light, MD, FACS and a patient

Dr. Light remarked that patients of all ages ask how they can maintain a healthy and vibrant look. “Whether that means addressing skin tone, texture, fine lines or bringing a face into balance by refining the shape of the neckline or nose, our patients trust us to give them real and helpful information about what they can expect within their own comfort levels. I listen to my clients to ensure I clearly understand their concerns, goals and expectations.” LFPS’ 20-plus years of experience show in the way Dr. Light and his staff care for their patients. Dr. Light’s staff excels at preparing clients for whatever course of treatment they have thoughtfully chosen, and he insists on extra steps to ensure patients understand what their experience will be and that they are supported and protected through the whole process. For some treatments, like the ablative CO2 laser which must be performed under anesthesia at an outpatient surgery center, the post-care regimen is lengthy. “My capable staff shines in this capacity and patients often feel like they’ve made new friends during their supported healing process,” he said. Light Facial Plastic Surgery is located at 1218 13th Ave. SE, Decatur, AL 35601. Drbenlight.com

Stefani Nelson, Vickie Jackson and Sonya Nix share a fun moment at Better Than Before.

Resale and consignment shopping are hotter than ever ARTICLE BY WENDY SACK PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA JONES - LISA JONES PHOTOGRAPHY

The dated opinion that resale and consignment shops are “dated” needs to be checked at the door. Especially when you walk into Better Than Before (BTB) in downtown Cullman!

Stefani Nelson shows off some cute pink accessories perfect for the Little Pink Dress benefit coming up Oct. 7.

“Headed to the Little Pink Dress event Oct. 7? Better than Before has a beautiful selection of dresses and accessories!” BTB is well stocked with high-quality, in-style clothing – and even offers its own personal shopping experience. Owner Sonya Nix said the store was born back in 1997, when she and her husband visited a tiny resale shop in Tennessee. “I became hooked, telling him ‘I think I can do this!’ I was 34 years old and had absolutely NO retail experience. But I guess determination makes up for ignorance and somehow, by the grace of God, we survived that first year,” she recalled. BTB started in 700 square feet on Sportsman Lake Road, moved to a 2,500 square-foot location and eventually to its current location at 124 Fourth St. SW. “Since then, we've expanded twice, opened a second location in Decatur and relocated and expanded that location as well,” said Nix. “We now have two showrooms totaling 16,000 square feet! Once upon a

time we were a simple brick-and-mortar resale shop, but today we're more diverse than ever, offering our customers a robust website, social media options for browsing, Whatnot live auctions and 13 Facebook Lives a week!” Nix said that, for consumers, BTB’s “Personal Shopper Experience” is incredibly popular. “They simply give us their sizes, favorite colors and fashion preferences, tell us a little about their lifestyle – and at the agreed-upon time, we have loads of style options and ensembles waiting for them to try on. This service includes hanger-to-hand service with styling suggestions, accessorizing and budget considerations.” For consignors, she said, “The resale industry gives our neighbors a way to extend the life of their wardrobe, recoup some of their original wardrobe CONTINUED >

Top: Stefani Nelson admires some fun, sparkly pink tops that would catch anyone's eye at the Little Pink Dress benefit! Said Nelson, “Sonya’s Personal Shopper Experience not only saved me time and money, but she also picks out clothes that complement your body shape! She picked clothes out for me I was reluctant to try on; she told me to try everything she picked out and only buy what I liked. Well I loved everything! She was so kind and helpful! I told everyone about the Personal Shopper Experience we had! I can’t wait to do it again!” Bottom: Vickie Jackson (left), a longtime customer and consignor, is also the Better Than Before model for the annual Pilot Club of Cullman Fashion Show.

investment and a little ‘saving the planet’ as well! And we make it easy; we offer a convenient drop-off service for busy folks. No need to wait – they can pick up their returns or we offer a convenient charitable donation service.” Speaking of common misconceptions about resale/consignment shopping, Nix was candid. One is “resale shops are full of old, outdated, dirty items.” “Not so!” she said. “BTB adheres to a strict vetting process because we want our clients to have the very best, high-quality and clean selection: no stains, tears, flaws, pet hair or odors. Consignments are carefully evaluated to eliminate any that don't meet these requirements.” Another, she said, is “resale shops are an easy place to get burned on fake luxury items.” “While we cannot speak for all resale shops, at BTB, we carefully evaluate all luxury items for authenticity,” Nix explained. “You can rest easy knowing your Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel and others purchased at BTB are absolutely the real deal. We guarantee authenticity or your money back!” Last, is "’resale’ means cheap thrift and that kind of shopping takes way too long to find anything good.” “Well first, let's not knock a good thrifting experience,” Nix laughed. “If you've got time, that's a fun treasure-hunter's way to spend a day! But that's not who we are. Because of our quality vetting process, BTB offers a totally different experience than most ‘thrift’ stores. You'll be shopping like-new and often new-with-tags merchandise that's still within the current fashion trends. Our store is strategically laid out and organized to maximize the clients' shopping experience. It's appealing, pleasant and saves loads

“Shoppers are savvier and more eco-conscious than ever – they know they can get more for less shopping secondhand while limiting their environmental impact.”

of time and money. The quality we offer changes the playing field.” Students have headed back to school, and many parents and older students are still stocking up on clothing and accessories. Resale and consignment can be an outstanding option for those looking to stay within a budget, but still hit class in style. “Going back to school can cost loads, especially if there's multiple children involved. We may not be able to do anything about those expensive school supplies, but we can make you look good for less,” said Nix. “And here's another reason to shop secondhand: the unique element. Want to see yourself six times walking down the hall at school? Shop your local big box store or boutique. Want something unique, one of a kind? Shop resale!”

BACK-TO-SCHOOL TRENDS THIS FALL

• Lots of 70s-inspired fashion: Lots of mustard yellow • Some 80s influence: Puffy, bold shoulders • Maximalism: Bold colors, statement accessories and playful patterns • Funky mix of preppy/athleisure: Polo shirts with athletic leggings or shorts • Scarf prints: Matching sets, dresses and other clothing – a "Bohemian" flare • Skinny jeans are threatening a comeback, but barrel and wide-leg are still holding strong • Bold colors, especially in activewear “But one of the most popular trends? Sustainability!” Nix said. “There's a growing focus on a ‘circular economy,’ making shopping secondhand one of this fall's LEADING trends in fashion.”

Gorgeous mums and pumpkins in an array of autumn colors

Ever since I was a little girl, fall has held a special place in my heart. Sure, my birthday falls in October (and I’m not mad about that), but there’s something deeper — something about this season that speaks to the soul. There’s a shift in the air come September. It turns cool and crisp, whispering that change is coming. Leaves begin to trade their green for shades of gold, rust and burgundy. A warm mug of cider on a front porch swing becomes the perfect ending to a long day. For me, that front porch is more than just an entrance; it’s a welcome mat to life’s sweetest moments. That’s where Southern Porch Design was born. My dear friend (and publisher of this beautiful magazine!), Missy Gurley, and I teamed up to create something we both love: seasonal porch styling that brings joy to homes and businesses. We specialize in making porches feel like an experience. Think about it: cascading mums in vibrant autumn hues, plush

throws over rocking chairs, textured pillows on a bench or swing and pumpkins — oh, the pumpkins! Tall ones, bumpy ones, pale orange, deep plum, creamy white… all stacked around a door featuring a handcrafted wreath that greets every guest with warmth. We also love incorporating touches of Southern pride, like tasteful nods to your favorite football team. Whether you’re rolling with the Tide, backing the Tigers or repping your local school, we’ll find a classy way to show your spirit. And yes, we decorate for businesses, too - storefronts, front steps and welcome areas that wow customers before they even walk in. Fall is here, and y’all, October and November spots are already filling fast. And let’s not forget, December brings our Christmas parade and Tour of Homes — it’s never too early to plan your holiday porch or storefront setup. Let Southern Porch Design help you welcome the season in style! CONTINUED >

Nearing 57 years in business, The Something Blue Shoppe in Hartselle is one of the Southeast’s oldest and most prestigious full-service bridal salons. “Mothers and grandmothers are bringing their daughters and granddaughters to The Something Blue Shoppe to experience the exhilaration of carrying on the tradition and becoming a Royal Blue Bride,” beamed Owner TJ Holmes. “For the past 14 years, I’ve had the privilege of leading and growing what I consider to be one of the top bridal and prom teams in the industry. Now, as the owner, I’m even more excited to shape the future of this incredible store and continue serving our brides and prom guests with the same passion and dedication,” he continued. Housed in the Farmers and Merchants Bank built in 1915, The Something Blue Shoppe is quaint, warm, friendly and beautiful. Mothers of the brides and other guests can get cozy and enjoy coffee or a mimosa and let the professional bridal consultants do their work. “They’ll listen as you talk about your desires and your wedding, ask the appropriate questions, then help you choose the gowns you want to try,” said Holmes. “After you choose your perfect wedding gown, you’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to make that decision when you have someone guiding you through the process.” The store also has special occasion, prom and debutante gowns, and of course bridesmaid and flower girl dresses. And don’t forget accessories! While many brides opt for summertime nuptials, Holmes said autumn is in fashion. “In fact,” he shared, “over the past few years, October has become one of the most popular months for weddings!” Of course, seasons don’t dictate style – only new collections, he said. When it comes to wedding gowns, what’s popular now, according to The Something Blue Shoppe, are clean and modern minimalist gowns, basque waists and square necklines, 3D floral appliqués and vintage lace, bold sleeves (think detachable or dramatic puff), slit skirts, soft A-lines and big ballgowns. Find The Something Blue Shoppe at 224 Main St. W in Hartselle, and online at www. thesomethingblueshoppe.com. Next door, you’ll find The Something Blue Shoppe Bldg 2, which carries prom, homecoming and everyday dresses.
