It’s a brand new year, and with it comes a renewed focus on diet, exercise and other self-care goals. This is the time of year when many people look at ways to improve their health, evaluating everything from what they’re eating to local gym options and even health care providers. If you’re in the market for a new primary care doctor, one option is My Cullman Doctor. “My Cullman Doctor is Cullman’s first direct primary care clinic, locally owned and operated by Dr. Justin Rushing, MD,” said Marketing and Business Manager Julia Rushing. “Our patients pay a membership fee, and can then access a full range of primary care services as needed, without paying a co-pay or billing insurance. Unlimited visits, hour-long appointment slots and your doctor’s cell phone number are all included. It’s VIP health care without the VIP price tag.” According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, the direct primary care model gives family physicians a meaningful alternative to feefor-service insurance billing, typically by charging patients a monthly, quarterly or annual fee. “We work for our patients, not insurance companies. This means we are able to provide longer appointment slots, flexibility and unprecedented access to your doctor. We don’t bring patients in unnecessarily, make patients fill out pointless insurance questionnaires or run tests just because insurance tells us to,” said Rushing. “We strive to give all of our patients a VIP experience - listening to what they have to say and treating each patient as an individual person, not just a chart.” She said new patients can expect the practice to feel different. “We’re focused on building lasting relationships with our patients and getting to know them as
people, not just charts. At their first appointment, Dr. Rushing will personally meet them at the door and bring them back. We pride ourselves on our patients spending less time in the waiting room and more time with their doctor,” she said. “Dr. Rushing takes the time to listen and get to the root of patients’ problems. He’s also more accessible than your average doctor. Patients get his cell phone number and can text him with questions or concerns any time of day. He’s also able to personally follow up and treat patients via telehealth, saving them time and money.” Many people have questions about membership and insurance, said Rushing. “One question we get is does our membership replace your insurance. It does and it doesn’t. It covers all primary care needs - things you would normally go to the doctor or urgent care for. We also offer wholesale pricing for labs and discounted imaging, medication and specialty services through our relationships with community partners,” she explained. “Our membership doesn’t cover things like hospital stays and surgery, so we recommend our patients have some sort of insurance that covers those large emergency expenses. High-deductible, catastrophic and health-share plans are typically good options to pair with a direct primary care membership, although we are able to provide a fantastic value to those with more traditional plans as well.” My Cullman Doctor can also partner with small businesses to give their employees health care benefits, Rushing said. “We can help business owners compete for the best talent by offering comprehensive, affordable primary care benefits packages.” www.mycullmandoctor.com

You’ve come through the busy holiday season, and winter months are settling in (for a short while - come on, it’s Alabama!) It’s a perfect time to treat yourself to a reset – a spa day – to kick off 2024! By Grace Beauty & Wellness is owned by Kayra Everett and Jen Woodard. “Our business venture started a couple of years ago through joking conversations. We have always been obsessed with anything beauty and aesthetics. We both went through some hard life changes in 2020 and 2021. Jen lost her mom and I lost my dad,” said Everett. “Shortly after that it just seemed like God kept opening doors for us to make this happen. We are so excited to help people build their self-confidence and give them that boost so they can be the best version of themselves. Our mission is to empower our clients to improve their overall health and wellness. We want to help them feel just as beautiful on the outside as God made them on the inside. We want to demonstrate the love of Christ by providing an encouraging, uplifting and compassionate environment where all feel welcome, and blessed when they leave.” By Grace offers everything from facials, chemical peels, micro-needling, micro-blading, brow laminations, and tints, lash lifts and tints, and a blow dry bar that is just wash, dry and style. “Our most popular services are our body/facial sculpting treatments and our urinary incontinence treatment,” Everett explained. “Emsella is the only FDA-approved device for urinary incontinence treatment. It uses electromagnetic impulses to contract the pelvic floor. The contractions are called ‘supramaximal’ because they are not possible to achieve

In under 30 minutes, the pelvic floor is contracted 11,000 times," she said. “The results have already been life-changing for so many since this can be such a debilitating problem. It is approved for men and women." She continued, “Emsculpt Neo is a body sculpting treatment that is FDA-approved for 10 different parts of the body. It uses two different mechanisms to simultaneously contract muscle tissue for growth and heats fat cells up to cause programmed cell death. With Emsculpt Neo you can lose up to 30% of subcutaneous fat tissue, and it is also the only treatment in the world that also targets visceral fat, which is the dangerous fat around the organs that can cause major health issues. Muscle growth is an average of up to 25%. By the end of one Neo session, the muscle is contracted 20,000 times. For example, if you are treating the abdomen that would be equivalent to 20,000 crunches! This is the treatment used to tackle those

stubborn pockets of fat you just can’t get rid of no matter how much weight you lose, or those areas you work out daily and still can’t get that muscle definition you are looking for.” By Grace’s facial sculpting treatment, Emface, has been branded a “non-surgical facelift,” without the need for needles, surgery or anesthesia. Said Everett, “This treatment uses the same two mechanisms as Neo except in the face. The connective tissue in the face is connected to the skin unlike any other part of the body. As years go by the connective tissue gets weak and starts to ‘sag’ or ‘droop.’ Emface contracts that tissue 75,000 times in each session. Radiofrequency is a type of heat that is used to stimulate collagen and elastin production which are the two key skin enzymes that make us look youthful. We can’t stop aging, but this treatment reverses the clock! It’s also an amazing preventative skin treatment for the younger population. If you need some lift and volume to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, but want to avoid an invasive procedure, this is for you!” www.bygracebeautyandwellness.com

Focus on
financial health Q&A WITH KATIE E. BROWN When you're crafting your New Year's resolutions, don't forget to consider improving your financial health.
Katie E. Brown Katie E. Brown began her career with Edward Jones in December 2019, becoming the firm's first female financial advisor in Cullman. Serving the Cullman area as a financial advisor and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor has provided a direct path to helping community members implement financial strategies to work toward the achievement of their goals.
CCL: WHEN YOU CONSIDER FITNESS AND BLEND THAT WITH FINANCE, THE TERM FINANCIAL FITNESS COMES TO MIND. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?
KB: Getting in shape is something we all want to do, but we limit that often to our physical appearance. When we expand the term "fitness" to encompass our health and mental well-being, we must also consider our finances, families and our faith. To me, financial fitness is not only getting in shape, but also implementing strategies that help one stay in shape. Having tools, resources and a trusted professional available is important to keep people from making bad decisions that ultimately lead to poor financial health.
CCL: WHAT STEPS WOULD YOU TAKE TO BEGIN GETTING FINANCIALLY FIT? Katie E. Brown
KB: Budget, emergency savings and insurance! We cannot achieve our financial goals without knowing what we

are currently bringing in and spending. By considering your current spending habits, you can look to see where trimming the fat may be necessary. Once you have a grasp on your monthly expenses, ensure there is a savings amount set aside that will cover these expenses in unfortunate situations. Job layoffs, unexpected home maintenance and vehicle troubles can deter us from our goals if we do not have the savings to cover them. It's also important to further protect a strategy by evaluating insurance needs and implementing a plan. The unfortunate loss of a loved one - a spouse or a child can really destroy a family not only emotionally, but financially, too. Protecting those you love and your financial strategy with insurance can be a game changer for all affected. I help to make this happen.
CCL: WHAT MIGHT BE SOMETHING INTIMIDATING ABOUT FINANCIAL FITNESS?
KB: There are so many terms and rules when it comes to money. One wrong step and not only might the financial future be compromised, but a negative tax implication or estate consideration could be affected or overlooked. We also have more access to investments than ever before. Everyone has become an "expert" and it can be hard to know who to follow and trust. I try to make investing easier by meeting you where you are, educating you on the next steps and building a professional team around you that can include me, an accountant and an attorney.
CCL: WHAT IS THE GREATEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED ABOUT FINANCES?
KB: Absolutely save something for later! My great-grandfather always gave my brother and me peppermints when we would visit him in Morris, Alabama. He gave us at least two, telling us that one was to be saved for later. That stuck with me, and I follow that guidance to this day.

The second lesson was that of compounding interest. It's a gamechanger! The sooner you start investing, the harder the money can work for you. Your money earns money which then all earns money, which then goes on to earn even more money. It may sound boring, but it's truly powerful stuff!
CCL: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BE A FINANCIAL ADVISOR?
KB: I had a wonderful opportunity to combine my financial interest and will to serve others. When we educate those in our society about money, we can change lives! To create generational wealth is one thing, but what good is it if we do not first create generational financial literacy? I aim to serve people in a way that they feel empowered by their financial strategies, have knowledge of why they are following the plan we set in place and are excited about how those simple steps can be life-changing for them and the generations to come. www.edwardjones.com/us-en/financial-advisor/katie-brown
