Summer in Alabama is our favorite time of the year! Gardens everywhere are in full bloom, displaying vegetables ripe and rich in color and sweet, delicious fruits. Your fellow neighbors now have sun-kissed cheeks and cheery dispositions. The warm weather is a blessing, with long, summer days promising nothing but good times. Indeed, summer in Alabama is our favorite time. But, let’s face it— Alabama summers are hot. As my grandmother would say, “I swanee, it’s hot as blue blazes!” Thankfully, Cullman features many amazing ways to beat the heat! The water is calling our name— we both adore it. Melissa grew up playing on Smith Lake, while my entire childhood was seemingly spent at the community pool. And despite now being adults, we still flock to the water whenever we have the chance. Visiting Smith Lake is always a great way to cool off on those hot and humid days, and our love for the lake runs deep. My family used to live on Smith Lake, which meant we were constantly, and I mean constantly swimming. Melissa both lives and works on the lake selling real estate. It is difficult to express Smith Lake’s beauty in words— the water is so clear and clean, and the way the sun hits the lake is nothing short of a masterpiece. Cullman City has fun and new additions to complete your Summer Staycation. New waterparks, the Palomino, 2nd Fridays, Summer Concerts, movie nights, and festivals are on our summer agenda. Honoring our Cullman Veterans

William Carter Sr. & Jr. Once a week, the veterans at the Cullman VFW post gather to swap stories and bond over their shared experiences. William Carter Sr. and William Carter Jr. are a father-son duo who, amongst other individual campaigns, served together in Iraq. They were in an engineering unit, in which they specialized in maintaining heavy equipment, pouring concrete pads, plumbing, and more. When asked about his deployment, William Carter Jr. stated: “I was young— fresh out of high school. I was nervous and scared. But so thankful that my father was going to be there. I was ready to earn my stripes like

everyone else did.” After serving in Iraq from 2003 to 2004, William Carter Sr. retired, and William Carter Jr. went on to serve in Afghanistan. William Carter Sr. relayed the joy of coming home: “I was overwhelmed coming home. As soon as we passed New York, everyone started hollering and screaming.” Since becoming a VFW member, William Carter Sr. has taken charge of placing American flags on the highway to honor local veterans and does other activities to aid the VFW’s mission as well. William Carter Jr. now lives in Fort Worth, but visits the post for events and to support his father.

Michael Schendil served in Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991. He started as a doctor working in various hospitals until he was assigned to the third armor division. There, he was part of a small medical unit, their mission being to tend to the troops’ general needs. He also did humanitarian missions and aided locals by providing them with medical supplies, food, and water. “The VFW is a good place to see friends and become part of a band of brothers. I am privileged and honored to be here.”

Steve Larson served as a Marine in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. He was wounded twice in combat and earned two Purple Hearts for his bravery. “I enjoy coming here for the camaraderie and for the different guys I get to see. When I first joined, we had a lot of members who fought in WW2 and the Korean War, but they‘re all gone now. I was the Chaplin of the post for nine years, and ended up overseeing about 60 or 70 funerals for those veterans.”

Robert Turner served as a Marine in Vietnam, starting in December of 1965. Turner was a crew member for armored personnel carriers, which carry about 26 people and 3 crew members. He traveled with units, standing guard and going on patrols. He was also wounded twice in combat and earned two Purple Hearts. “The post is like a brotherhood. Some of these guys I even went to school with. I like helping here at the VFW; we build a lot of ramps and decks for our handicapped veterans, and that’s really important.”

Riki Knight served in Afghanistan for two tours, one from 2003 to 2005, and the other from 2006 to 2007. He was attached to the infantry unit and went on patrols with them as a signal support specialist, working with radios and computers. “After serving, I’ve come to appreciate life a little more. I’ve realized that most remedial things are useless.”

Tina Herfurth served in Iraqi freedom for the Air Force in 2003. Her unit was stationed in Jordan, and she worked as an equipment mechanic. After working with the Air Force she switched to serving with the Air Guard. “When I got out of the military, it was tough to talk about it—I left with a bad taste in my mouth. Trident Marina has been a staple on Smith Lake for many successful years. Their restaurant, The Grille at Trident Marina, was key in guiding the transition from just a place to dock your boat into a prime spot for gathering after a day out on the water. Although small, The Grille was a fan favorite, featuring delicious meals, spectacular views, and the convenience of having two ways to enter: by land or by boat! The restaurant closed down for remodeling this past year, and on May 28th, it opened back up, revamped and ready to host! The general manager of The Grille, Jonathan Scoggins, has previously worked as executive chef at the Hoover Country Club, U.S. Foods, and the Riverchase Country Club. His style of cuisine can be described as traditional Southern food skirting on the edge of gourmet. Under his care, The Grille’s menu has expanded, adding soon-to-be staples and new sides! Previous guests and lovers of the original menu— don’t

fret! The Grille’s go-tos, such as the Summer Sunset salad, Jalapeño Ranch Fish Tacos, and the Po-Boy, will still be on the menu, but will be joined by a new wave of options! Try the brandnew Southwestern Black Bean Wrap, Dill Pickle Fries, or the Spicy Honey Garlic Shrimp! Looking for more than phenomenal food? The Grille is also providing weekly summer events to keep your weekends rolling! They currently host a concert series each Saturday. Jeff Tolbert, the owner of Trident, has always strived to use his business to enhance the community around it. Knowing that creating a hotspot for lake-goers can pose certain hazards, he has graciously built a storm shelter with enough room inside to fit customers and locals living on the lake. With The Grille making a glorious comeback, the Trident Marina is once again bustling with happy and hungry guests wanting tasty food, a seat with a view, and a drink in their hand as they enjoy good company.

RECOGNIZING CULLMAN’S VFW CHAPTER.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is a national organization that strives to care for combat veterans and promote patriotism in communities throughout the United States. All veterans who have served in a combat zone are welcome to join. The Cullman VFW post, located on Veterans’ Drive, is especially devoted to staying active and hosts weekly events. These events include bible studies every Monday night, a hot $6 lunch every Tuesday, a Veteran fellowship every Wednesday night, membership meetings the first Thursday of each month, BINGO on Friday nights, and a social event one Saturday night of every month. The post also arranges other events, such as frequent Buddy Poppy drives, a Memorial Day program, and works with American Legion to organize and conduct an annual Veterans Day Event at the Cullman Airport, which attracts thousands of visitors. The post also holds patriotic essay contests for nearby schools and awards the winners with cash prizes and mentions in a newspaper. Each year, it recognizes a teacher, firefighter, EMS worker, and police officer. The Cullman post members are extremely dedicated and hard-working! They provide emergency trips to the VA Hospital in Birmingham for veterans without transportation, do funeral services with a slow farewell salute and brief ceremony as requested, build wheelchair ramps, mow lawns, and do anything else they can to aid local veterans and their families. The members also mentor fellow veterans who have been arrested for minor offenses and help them into Veterans Court programs to clear their records. They work with ELKS and Camp Liberty to celebrate Flag Day and decorate

Cullman with American Flags on national holidays, as well as place 1,200 flags on veteran graves in the Cullman City Cemetery and Memory Gardens every Memorial Day. The post holds fundraisers to house homeless and disadvantaged veterans in the tiny home village on Crane Hill, keeps Cullman veterans informed by hosting a weekly Veterans Show on WCQT-TV and Facebook called All About Cullman, and processes applications for bricks to be inscribed and cemented in Veterans Park to honor veterans and their families. Some post members are on the Veterans Park Board, providing flags, approving any new additions, and ensuring that the park is well maintained. VFW membership reached its height after World War Two. Cullman's WW2 veterans included Jimmy Caretti, who was wounded in Normandy and started the flag program to decorate Highway 31, Sonny Teague, who promoted the popular Saturday night dance for seniors, George Mann, who was wounded at Anzio and was instrumental in giving us Veterans Park at Sportsman's Lake, and Julian Campbell, who piloted 40 B-26 bomber missions over Europe, and who, at 102 years old, is still an active member of the post. The Cullman VFW post, in its mission to secure the betterment of veterans’ lives, also promotes awareness of a new medical procedure: the Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) shot. The SGB shot resets the nervous system, relieving the effects of PTSD. It costs $800 and, thanks to the post, 200 local veterans have undergone the procedure and can verify that it has both changed and saved their lives.

I TA L I A N L O N G I S L A ND INGREDIENTS • .5oz Tequila • .5oz Gin • .5oz White Rum • .5oz Cointreau • .5oz Simple Syrup • 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain. Garnish with lemon or orange slice.

G A R D E N PA S TA INGREDIENTS • 16oz Casarecce Pasta • 2 small zucchini • 2 small squash • 1 small eggplant • 1 yellow onion • 2c cherry tomatoes • 3 tbs Pesto Infused Olive Oil • 2c freshly grated parmesan, plus additional for serving • 2 tsp garlic powder • Salt & Pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. 2. Chop vegetables into pieces. 3. Drizzle vegetables with oil; season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. 4. Roast vegetables in a single layer about 15 minutes. 5. Cook pasta in salted, boiling water until al dente, 10-12 minutes. 6. Drain pasta. 7. In a serving bowl, combine roasted vegetables, pasta, and cheese. Drizzle with additional olive oil and thin with small amount of water if necessary. 8. Top with more parmesan cheese and serve! Getting Ready For Summer WE’RE HERE TO HELP WITH YOUR SUMMERTIME PREP! We are always planning and hoping for those carefree days by the pool or on a boat. However, there’s a lot of maintenance that must be done to have those tranquil days. We want to help make those cumbersome tasks easier on you; here are a few of our favorite local businesses that we trust to help us get ready for summer.

Bugs Be Gone— this is a huge game-changer! We had Bugs Be Gone installed on our dock out on the lake, and it immediately became spider-free! We spend hours outside fishing, grilling, and more without having to worry about bug swarms and their bites. It is a must for a lakeside living!

Burks Brothers Pools and Spas— we love our pool and spa! Burks Brothers built our pool in the 90s and it still looks amazing, thanks to their dutiful maintenance. They also flawlessly upgraded it to a saltwater pool. Check them out on FB for all of your pool and spa needs!

Free State Boat Docks— Dan and Justin Hogan are making beautiful docks on Smith Lake! They are Smith Lake’s #1 Manufacturer of docks, and build durable but cool docks! Check them out at on FB and IG.

Collins Landscaping— The Collins are longtime residents of Cullman. They started their business over twenty-five years ago, and are the best at getting your yard ready for the summer. They offer services such as mowing, weed eating, mulch, and more!
