It is almost impossible to choose which issue theme is my favorite, but this one is definitely in the running! Food is a love language of its own, and the CSRA is blessed with amazing restaurants, caterers, and food trucks from all backgrounds and culinary traditions. This month, we are highlighting some of the best around! From Oliviana’s in downtown Augusta to Tavern on the Trail at Bartram Trail Golf Club to Winston’s Tavern in the center of downtown Evans and everywhere in between, we travel all over the CSRA to share delicious dishes and welcoming atmospheres. Whether it’s traveling food trucks or brick and mortar restaurants, we have so many yummy details to share. We also cannot let October go by without acknowledging the important work being done in the area of breast cancer prevention. Reduce Your Risk Inc. hosts its Pinkapalooza Celebration each year in an effort to raise awareness. LisaAnn Wheeler shares about Reduce Your Risk’s mission and what to expect at this year’s event. I hope this issue finds you enjoying fall weather and ready to explore the amazing foods and people the CSRA has to offer!

TASTE MEETS COMFORT

Experience delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere at Winston’s Tavern ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHLOÉ GIANCOLA

Built on a lifelong passion that started when John Williams was just fifteen, Winston’s Tavern showcases the knowledge and experience John has curated during his culinary career. From his elite training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Australia, and London, to the opening of his first restaurant, The Royal

“Winston’s Tavern isn’t just a beautiful restaurant; it’s a complete dining experience.” - Rob Clifton Tern, with his brother Ben Williams in John’s Island, South Carolina, John has been honing the hospitality skills that make Winton’s Tavern a place locals want to gather. When family friend and local developer Vic Mills shared the vision for creating a downtown space in Evans with John a few years ago, John was excited at the prospect of joining the project. “They were looking for an anchor restaurant in the new, multi-use development called the Premier. The demographic is great and the people are great, so we thought it was a natural fit,” shares John. “Every community needs a gathering spot, a fun place where you can go regularly, meet your friends, and pop in for dinner or just a drink. The cozy atmosphere of a traditional style tavern seemed perfect.”

To bring the vision of Winston’s Tavern to life, John and Ben partnered with Rob Clifton and Clifton Construction. “Rob and I really clicked,” says John. “He was excited about the project and the area. It was a pleasure working with him throughout the entire process of the build out.” Once the building details came together, the focus turned to cultivating an interior atmosphere fitting for a local gathering place. Interior designer Amber Aument of Aument Design Studio worked to capture the vision while John and his wife searched for just the right elements to add. “We hand-picked most of the art on the walls from antique shops. We love old maps, so we’ve got old maps of Georgia as well as hunting scenes and dog prints that really create that tavern feel,” says John. “We also found an old butcher CONTINUED >

block that was made back in the 1800s that we use as our front host stand.” Seeing how seamlessly Winston’s Tavern has come to life, Rob Clifton says he is thrilled that Clifton Construction played an integral role in bringing the restaurant to Evans. “Winston’s Tavern is one of those projects where the architecture, finishes and overall atmosphere came together exactly the way you hope they will,” shares Rob. “From the color palette and warm lighting to the rich textures and thoughtful details throughout the space, everything feels upscale without being overly formal. There’s a warmth to the restaurant that makes it just as comfortable for a casual dinner as it is for a special occasion. Winston’s Tavern isn’t just a beautiful restaurant; it’s a complete dining experience.” A perfect complement to the tavern’s ambiance, the menu offers elevated versions of classic comfort foods and hearty dishes just as fitting for special occasions as they are for everyday fare. Chef Chris Jones intentionally combines local flavors and high quality, fresh ingredients to create seasonal dishes and classic favorites. “One favorite is our steak and eggs, which is our twist on a steak tartare. It’s prime filet with a bit of smoked trout roe on top as the eggs,” says John. “We do a pan-roasted whole fish every day as well and Chris does a fantastic lamb shank that everybody has been asking us to bring back.” The menu also brings a taste of the coast by featuring The Royal Tern’s famous clam chowder as well as the popular crab poke. Add fresh bread made in-house, including yeast rolls made using a recipe from John’s grandmother, and people keep coming back for more. Winston’s Tavern new patio opened this fall, adding more space for people to enjoy. “The bar is all walk-in but our dining room gets booked up pretty well, especially on

"Every community needs a gathering spot, a fun place where you can go regularly, meet your friends, and pop in for dinner or just a drink." - John Williams, owner Winston's Tavern Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, which is why we encourage reservations,” says John. “The patio is where people can walk in and have a dinner or they can just meet and have some cocktails with friends. We’re really excited about being able to offer that new space.” John credits his team with making sure the restaurant runs smoothly and welcoming each guest who walks through the doors. “My team is amazing. Susan Hlavin is a native of the Augusta area and has been in the industry for a long time. She is really the backbone of the restaurant,” he says. “On the hospitality side of things, the team

is warm and welcoming. They are a really great group of individuals.” For John, working with a team to make the vision of Winston’s Tavern come to life has been very rewarding. He shares, “There is nothing greater than seeing people really enjoy their experience and having a good time in a restaurant you created.” Winston’s Tavern is located at 880 Ronald Reagan Drive in Evans. A HIDDEN GEM OF BARTRAM TRAIL GOLF CLUB WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED AND ENJOYED

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

When Jason and Debbie Page bought Bartram Trail Golf Club five years ago, they set out to reinvent the dining experience at the club’s restaurant, Tavern on the Trail, and spread the word that the restaurant is open to everyone. “Most people already know about Bartram Trail Golf Club, but they don’t know that we have a restaurant with an elevated menu and full bar that is open to the public,” shares Jason. “From the beginning, our dream has been to not only see a parking lot full of golf carts from the neighborhood, but also to welcome area locals and out of town visitors.” A key part of the transformation has been intentionally focusing on ways to appeal to the whole family and not just those spending the day on the course. “The first thing we did was change the vibe away from a place to grab a quick hot dog and get back on the course and make it a place for the family to come after work, eat, and spend time,” says Jason. “We still have a casual vibe where you don’t have to dress a certain way or have a certain job to feel welcome, but with an upscale menu. We just want you to come, eat some great food, and enjoy your time with us.” They began by revamping the menu, keeping a few traditional clubhouse staples while adding more substantial and sophisticated fare. “We still have things like chicken wraps, sandwiches, and chicken fingers, but we’ve elevated the dinner menu to include steak, chicken, and fish entrees,” explains Jason. “We have lamb chops that are just absolutely to die for and our steaks are unbelievable. They rival any steak you can find around.” The menu also includes guest favorites like hand-rolled Philly cheese egg rolls, hand-cut fries, and the Right Turn burger topped with cream cheese, bacon, and pepper jelly. The dessert offerings got a makeover as well with the addition of Crème brûlée, Jason’s favorite dessert.

Another key focus was making all their sauces in-house and from scratch. “You can change a meat completely by just the sauce you use,” Jason explains. “So it’s important to us that we make our sauces in-house, including our honey mustard and ranch.” They also improved the bar area to make it full service and create an atmosphere where guests feel comfortable relaxing and staying a while. The beverage menu offers a curated selection of wine, beer, and handcrafted cocktails. “We do a maple bacon smoky old-fashioned that is probably my favorite,” says Jason. In the tavern’s cozy kitchen, the staff prepares each dish with care and guests are treated to a relaxed, unhurried experience with plenty of fun ways to pass the time while waiting for their meal. “Our porch has a great view of the pond for guests to enjoy and right off the porch, there is a putting green for the course. You can grab a putter and putt some balls while your wife sits on the deck to relax or she can join you,” Jason explains. “We also have a full service driving range with simulation bays where you can track your ball or play games. It’s a great place for a date night or time with the family.”

22

M UST SE E | FO O D + BEVERAGE

Tavern on the Trail also hosts theme nights, including Trivia Night on Mondays and Family Night on Wednesdays. “Kids eat for free on Wednesday nights,” says Jason. “We put a bouncy house up for the kids to enjoy and then there is a kids’ buffet, so they don’t have to worry about ordering off the menu.” Other events include monthly karaoke nights and featuring a local acoustic artist on the first Thursday of each month. The restaurant also has space for private events and parties, with full service catering and bartending services available. “You don’t have to be a member to join us at the restaurant, so we encourage you to stop by and join us,” says Jason. “The food is absolutely unbelievable. I promise you won’t come just once everybody who comes becomes a regular.” Tavern on the Trail, located at 470 Bartram Trail Club Drive in Evans, is a locally and veteran-owned business. To find out more, visit www.bartramtrailgolfclub.org/tavern-on-the-trail, call 706210-4681, and follow Tavern on the Trail at Bartram Trail Golf Club on Facebook and Instagram.

A Pinkapalooza Celebration LisaAnn Wheeler, who co-founded Reduce Your Risk along with Carolyn Byrd and Angela Prince, shares about Pinkapalooza—one of their biggest events of the year—and some practical ways women can reduce their risk of breast cancer.

CSRA CL: WHAT DOES PINKAPALOOZA LOOK LIKE?

LisaAnn: It starts at 10:00am with our monthly survivor’s walk in the mall. At 10:30am, we have a catered breakfast for survivors. Then, the celebration begins at 11:00am with all the bells and whistles. We have a lot of community partners that come out and set up their tents—most are there to bless the survivors. It’s a sea of pink and hundreds of people come from all over the CSRA. It’s really fun and celebratory. We celebrate survivorship, but also memorialize those who were healed in heaven. We also color the mall’s fountain water pink and have a big stage and tent to house performers and a fashion show. There are food trucks, a children’s zone with princesses and superheroes, and we do giveaways from the United Breast Cancer Foundation—they send us 150 bags worth $750 each that are given to survivors. We put together other bags too so that no one leaves without something.

CSRA CL: HOW CAN WOMEN BE MORE AWARE AND REDUCE THEIR RISK OF BREAST CANCER?

LisaAnn: Everybody talks about it in October, but breast cancer awareness is every month. The Know Your Lemons Foundation has a great website for women to see the 12 signs of breast cancer and they have an app that reminds women to do their monthly breast self-exam. I can’t stress the importance of self-exams for women throughout their lives—starting with women in their 20s. If you know the lay of the land, you’re going to know when something comes up that wasn’t there prior, at which time you could investigate that with a primary care physician. Eighty-five percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer don’t have a family history of it, so monthly self-exams and annual mammograms are a must.

No one really talks about prevention either. Exercising, sleeping, eating well, reducing alcohol intake, and reducing stress all affect overall health and can possibly reduce the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

CSRA CL: DOES REDUCE YOUR RISK HOST ANY OTHER EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

LisaAnn: We have a monthly walk at the mall on the first Saturday of every month. We also host a support group, for all cancer diagnoses, on the third Monday at 6:00pm of every month at The Hub. We have two signature events every year—Sundresses and Lemonade and Pinkapalooza. Sundresses and Lemonade came about through my partnership with Know Your Lemons Foundation, where they educate women on the 12 signs of breast cancer. At that event, we have a fashion show, performers, beautiful lunch testimonies, and we give away gifts to survivors. It’s one of our signature events and our Annual Fundraiser. This year, Pinkapalooza happens Saturday, October 4, 2026 at the Augusta Mall. To learn more about Pinkapalooza and see what Reduce Your Risk is doing to promote breast cancer awareness, visit Reduce Your Risk on Facebook, email ReduceYourRiskInc@ gmail.com, or call (706) 842-8807.

Flavor on Wheels Getting a taste of local food truck fare ARTICLE BY ALLISON SPENCE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED The CSRA’s food scene has grown tremendously over the years, giving us a restaurant culture that can almost rival the big cities. But there’s something special about our food truck culture; the local flavor, creativity, and community that comes with finding

Alsies Ice Cream Truck Alsies takes the ice cream truck nostalgia you remember and gives it a serious upgrade with gourmet ice cream sandwiches, popsicles and the classic cold treat kids still sprint to the curb for. Track down the truck, grab a Banana Pudding or Key Lime Pie Sammie, and rediscover just how fun dessert can be. Whether you are cooling off on a hot CSRA day or simply looking for a sweet treat, Alsies is proof that the ice cream truck never goes out of style. Follow Alsies on Facebook at Alsies Augusta GA!

a favorite truck and watching it become a staple. We take great pride in the food trucks that have helped make the CSRA’s food scene so unique, especially J&K Blue Box, Alsies Ice Cream, Good Eats, and Soda Well. These tried-and-true

favorites serve up more than just great food, they bring people together and add a little extra flavor to our community. We are proud to celebrate the food trucks that keep the CSRA moving, growing, and eating well!

The Good Eats Authentic Filipino Cuisine The Good Eats serves the kind of Filipino comfort food that makes you say, “I’ll just try one lumpia,” and immediately wish you’d ordered more. Built on more than 75 years of family recipes, their adobo pancit, lechon pork belly, barbecue skewers and mango graham dessert are a delicious introduction to the Philippines. They're a true taste of family, tradition, and Filipino culture served right here in the CSRA. Follow The Good Eats on Facebook at The Good Eats Authentic Filipino Cuisine!

JOIN CSRA CITY LIFESTYLE AT STEED’S DAIRY FOR A FESTIVE FALL AFTERNOON

O UR TOWN | ENTERTAI NME N T

Visiting Steed’s Dairy is an autumn rite of passage. Steed’s Dairy in Grovetown stands as a cherished treasure in the CSRA, offering a quintessential autumn experience for generations of local families. Long before it became the region’s premier destination for fall festivities, the property was a true working dairy farm rooted in rich agricultural history. The story of Steed’s Dairy traces back to the 1930s, when John Steed Sr. purchased land off Wrightsboro Road in Grovetown after relocating from Lincoln County. In 1946, his son, John Steed Jr., introduced a small herd of Jersey cows to the property. A few years later, in 1953, he brought two of the very first Holstein cows into Columbia County—a bold move that proved exceptionally successful and helped shape the dairy landscape of the region.

As the decades passed and the surrounding area urbanized, many local agricultural operations faded away. Rather than closing its doors, the Steed family adapted to changing times. In 2010, the third generation of the Steed family launched “The Maize at Steed’s Dairy,” transforming the farm into a dynamic agritourism venue that honors its heritage while bringing joy to thousands of visitors each season. Today, visiting Steed’s Dairy is an autumn rite of passage. Guests can spend hours exploring the sprawling five-acre corn maze, enjoying scenic hayrides around the pasture, and hand-picking the perfect pumpkin from the patch. Children and adults alike adore the hands-on attractions, which include a friendly petting zoo, a massive corn kernel pit, rubber duck races, giant tube slides, and a giant jumping pillow. To keep the connection to its working-farm roots alive, the dairy also hosts live cow-milking demonstrations, offering young visitors an engaging, educational peek into real farm life. This fall, CSRA City Lifestyle magazine is thrilled to partner with Steed’s Dairy for a special community celebration! We warmly invite all of our readers, neighbors, and friends to join us for CSRA City Lifestyle Afternoon at Steed’s Dairy on Sunday, October 25th from 1:00 - 3:00PM. It’s the ultimate prelude to Halloween! Children are encouraged to dress up in their favorite festive Halloween costumes, and we will have plenty of delicious candy waiting for the little trick-or-treaters as they explore the farm. Gather your family, put on your festive attire, and spend a crisp autumn afternoon creating unforgettable memories with us under the big Georgia sky. We can’t wait to see you there! GOOD TIMES AHEAD ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL

Celebrating each day at

Oliviana Bar Italiano & Pizzeria

Since 2012, Oliviana Bar Italiano & Pizzeria has welcomed friends and family to come, stay a while, and enjoy time together. “Hospitality is at the forefront of who we are, and we strive to provide great experiences every day,” says Sarah Bassham, Director of Operations. “We want to be a place where people can consistently show up and feel like they’re welcomed home.” Oliviana’s menu is full of favorites such as the Chimichurri Ribeye, Chicken Piccata, Chicken Parmesan, and their famous pizzas. While the food brings people to the restaurant, the lively atmosphere encourages them to stay a while, then return again and again. “We have brunch every Sunday, Wine Down Wednesdays and wine tastings on Thursdays - when we highlight highly sought wines like Screaming Eagle, and a DJ who plays international music every Friday night. We also have a fabulous Happy Hour Monday-Saturday from 3:00-6:00pm,” says Sarah. “The first Monday of the month, we host Mahjong Monday and every other Friday night, we have salsa dance instruction along with international music. We always have something exciting happening.”

experience where they feel special when they come in the door,” Sarah explains. “Whether they are coming in by themselves to grab a drink and pizza at the bar, celebrating with a group in our private dining room, or here for their anniversary to sit at the table and be greeted with a glass of sparkling wine and a custom menu, we can provide the experience they’re looking for.” Stop in and experience Oliviana Bar Italiano & Pizzeria at 399 Highland Avenue in Augusta. For more information on menu items and to make reservations, visit olivianaitaliano.com or call 706-7231242. Also follow @OlivianaRistorante on Facebook and @oliviana.italiano.ristorante on Instagram.

Over the last few years, Oliviana’s has undergone several renovations. The most recent is a remodel of the kitchen, allowing faster turnover of orders. The most obvious renovation, however, was to the bar area. “We expanded the bar area and now we have a huge, gorgeous bar that seats twenty-six guests,” says Sarah. “We have a seasonal rotation of cocktails and take the time to really craft those cocktails using house-made syrups and infusing liquors. We also work closely with our vendors for a great selection of highly allocated bourbons as well as wines.” From the great food and drinks to the welcoming atmosphere, every detail ensures guests have a great time. “We want to give everybody an

PULL UP A CHAIR At CSRA City Lifestyle, we love that our restaurant scene is filled with local places that aren’t just somewhere to grab a meal, they’re part of our memories, traditions, and everyday lives. Kicking off our favorites, in Evans, Fukuro Sushi Bar is the kind of place we find ourselves returning to again and again for consistently delicious sushi, a luxe atmosphere, and the simple joy of sharing a great meal together. In Augusta, New Ming Wah has earned a spot on our favorites list because it’s dependable, delicious, and one of those places we can always count on when we’re craving the food we love. Salt + Marrow in North Augusta is as much about the experience as the food, it’s a place that makes us want to linger, enjoy the meal, and come back the next time we’re looking for something special. And then there’s Luigi’s, our favorite and Augusta’s oldest restaurant, which holds a truly special place in our hearts. We keep going back not only because we love the food, but because there’s something comforting about a restaurant with so much history and character that has been part of Augusta for generations.

FUKURO BAR & SUSHI Fukuro turns sushi night into an occasion, pairing pristine sashimi, inventive rolls and Japanese-inspired cocktails in a sleek, intimate setting. Start with the truffle-miso salmon sando or a bluefin tuna tartare, then let the night unfold one beautifully plated bite at a time. They bring the same creativity to their cocktail menu, serving up beautifully crafted drinks with bold flavors and unique combinations that pair perfectly with their Japanese cuisine.

LUIGI'S Walking into Luigi’s feels like stepping into old Augusta in the best possible way. Since 1949, this family institution has been serving Greek chicken, baked lasagna and Augusta’s original pizza pie with the kind of old-world charm you simply can’t recreate. Each spring during tournament week, Luigi's becomes a celebrity hot spot, welcoming some of the most recognizable names in sports, entertainment, and beyond for a taste of one of Augusta’s longtime favorites.

NEW MING WAH RESTAURANT At New Ming Wah, the move is simple: crispy marinated wings, a house egg roll and a heaping side of fried rice. Serving Augusta since 1989, it’s the kind of Chinese comfort food that turns “What should we get tonight?” into an easy answer. One of New Ming Wah’s favorite dishes is their House Special Lo Mein, a flavorful, hearty combination that showcases the restaurant’s classic Chinese-American cooking and keeps locals coming back for more.

SALT + MARROW KITCHEN At Salt + Marrow, dinner meets the flame, with dry-aged steaks, wood-fired lobster and Southern-inspired plates picking up smoky depth from the restaurant’s artisanal grill. Add a polished Riverside Village setting and a cocktail, and an ordinary night out suddenly feels worth dressing up for. You won't regret finishing up your meal with their sweet potato soufflé or lemon-basil cake.

Fall Penne with Roasted Butternut Squash INGREDIENTS: Servings: 4 • 2 1/4 lbs. butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 3 cups) • 1/4 cup olive oil, divided • kosher salt • 1 pound penne pasta • 3 ounces pancetta, sliced 1/4-inch thick and cut into small dice • 2 shallots, thinly sliced crosswise • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes • 10 fresh sage leaves, coarsely chopped • 1/2 cup finely grated Pecorino Romano cheese • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

M YG H O

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. Place butternut squash on a rimmed baking sheet and toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Season with salt. 3. Transfer to the oven and roast until the squash is browned and tender, for about 15 minutes. 4. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Generously salt the water. Add pasta and cook according to package directions. 5. Drain pasta, reserving up to 2 cups of cooking liquid. Set pasta and reserved cooking liquid aside. 6. Cook until shallots are soft, for 4 to 5 minutes. 7. Add penne and squash and toss gently, adding reserved pasta cooking liquid as necessary to moisten. 8. Add cheese and black pepper, and cook, tossing gently, until pasta and squash are heated through. 9. Serve immediately with more grated cheese, if desired.
