There is a specific kind of magic that settles over McHenry County as we cross the threshold into June. The air loses its bite and the landscape transforms into that lush, unapologetic green that only the Midwest can master. In this, our annual Gentleman’s Issue, we aren't just celebrating "trends" or "status." We are celebrating a mindset. Being a gentleman in 2026 isn't about rigid formality; it’s about intentionality—how we show up for our families, our businesses, and ourselves.
As we head into the heart of summer, I encourage you to lean into the unique pace of life here in northern Illinois. There is a quiet sophistication to be found in a Saturday morning spent wandering one of our many local farmers markets, sourcing the best of the season’s harvest, or in the focused silence of an early morning tee time at any of our county’s premier golf courses.
Being a gentleman this season means mastering the art of the "slow down”. It’s finding the perfect balance between the professional hustle and the restorative power of our local landscape. Whether that’s a sunset boat ride on the water, a curated tasting of a small-batch spirit, or simply perfecting the craft of the backyard sear for a Sunday dinner, these are the moments that define a life well-lived.
In this issue, we’ve curated content that speaks to that refined spirit. We hope it inspires you to step out, engage with our community, and embrace the ease of a McHenry County summer. Here’s to the men who lead with character and live with style.

From partnership to purpose-driven spaces built for how people truly live
ARTICLE BY PATTI NOBLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHARMILA TAYLOR
Over the past several years, as homes have taken on new roles—office, gym, workshop, retreat—the demand for spaces that function well has grown dramatically. From closets to mud rooms to garages, organization has taken a starring role.

“We wanted to have the ability to make the decisions... without having to ask for ‘permission’.”
One local Closets By Design franchise serving northern Illinois, originally established in 1998, has long provided customized storage solutions for everything from closets to garages. But its most recent chapter began just six years ago, when two new owners, Jamie Trewartha and Paul Paluch, stepped in after leaving behind careers in the corporate world of Sears.
After years as co-workers, Jamie and Paul had already built the kind of professional rhythm that comes naturally over time—an understanding of each other’s strengths, management styles, and shared commitment to doing things the right way. This camaraderie led to dreaming about one day building something of their own, together.
As their career paths began to evolve beyond Sears, the dreams turned into ideas which then started to take shape, and the conversation turned to what might come next.
It wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. The two began digging in—researching the market, studying industry trends, and evaluating what made sense not just financially, but operationally. The more they looked, the more it became clear: the model was strong, the demand was there, and the opportunity to build something of their own was real.
They also knew the skills they had developed— leadership, process, customer experience—would translate. What they were stepping into wasn’t unfamiliar territory. It was a chance to apply what they already knew, but in a way that gave them full control.
“In the corporate world, there are often things outside of your control,” Jamie shared. “We wanted to have the ability to make the decisions and do the right thing—for our customers and our employees— without having to ask for ‘permission’.”
So, in March of 2020 the two men officially took over the Closets By Design franchise. And just two weeks later…COVID took over the world.
What followed was something no one could have predicted, but in many ways, it accelerated exactly what their business was built for—not just a company, but a culture shift from what they left behind. People were spending more time in their homes, from work to school to play. They needed spaces to accommodate the shift. Jamie, Paul, and their team were up for the challenge.
Today, their team includes more than 70 employees, 29 of whom are designers—all local—and not a single sub-contractor. From the first design consultation to production to final installation, every step is handled by someone who is part of their team. And all designs are fully custom to the specific style, size, and needs of the customer.
The complex in Bartlett is impressive and from spending time with Jamie and Paul, their pride shines through. With humility and ease they talk about the office spaces and the show room with everything from mock closets and bedrooms to mudrooms and garages. What really stands out is the 53,000 sq.ft.

“What started as stepping away from corporate life has become a business built on ownership of decisions, quality, and the experience they create.”
production facility where the custom designs are built to order, allowing for a shorter delivery timeline. While other industries may struggle with delays, their process—from in-home design to installation—can often be completed in as little as four to eight weeks.
Closets By Design specializes in customized, floor-based organizational systems designed to maximize functionality without sacrificing style. Beyond closets: think pantries, laundry rooms, offices, hobby rooms, and Murphy beds. And for men, one design often rises to the top.
The garage.
Once considered purely utilitarian, garages have evolved into something far more personal—part workshop, part showroom, part retreat. It’s where projects happen, where tools are stored (and displayed), and increasingly, where design matters just as much as function.

In fact, in Jamie’s experience, up to 75% of homeowners who renovate their garage say they do so for organization as well as visual impact, and to create “neighbor envy.”
One of the biggest differentiators from the competitors is how Closet By Design systems are constructed. While others rely on wall-mounted units, Closets By Design builds floor-based systems—designed to support significant weight and long-term use. In a garage, that kind of durability isn’t just a bonus—it’s essential.
A standout feature in many of their garage transformations is Traxtile flooring—a modular, interlocking tile system designed specifically for garage environments.
Unlike traditional epoxy coatings, Traxtile is made up of durable, high-impact tiles that lock together to create a seamless surface. It’s engineered to handle heavy loads, resist stains from oil or chemicals, and allow for airflow underneath—helping to prevent moisture buildup.
With a clean, finished look and customizable patterns, it elevates the garage from something purely functional to something intentional. It’s the difference between a space you tolerate—and one you actually enjoy walking into.
They also specialize in slat wall systems , which allow tools, equipment, and gear to be hung, rearranged, and accessed with ease—creating a space that is both highly functional and visually clean.
At the core of everything they do is a simple belief: there is a solution for everyone. Each project begins with a free in-home consultation, often scheduled within just a few days. A designer works directly with the homeowner to create a custom plan, price
it on the spot, and map out the next steps—including installation timing. It’s a process both efficient and personal.
Over the years, Jamie, Paul, and the team have navigated unique and rewarding territories. They’ve built hidden panels that open into secure, concealed rooms—spaces designed for privacy, protection, or simply the intrigue of something tucked away. And while they’ve worked with their share of recognizable names around the Chicago area, it’s not the high-profile projects that define them—it’s the meaningful ones.
For Jamie and Paul, community involvement is a core value. They are proud of their charitable efforts which have raised over $60,000 for kids with Cancer as well as the personal moments that leave a big impression. One of those came during the height of COVID, when they partnered with a local charity to surprise a registered nurse in Algonquin with a $5,000 custom closet.
Though their reach spans across North, Northwest, and West Chicagoland—from the Wisconsin border to Rockford and east to Lake Michigan—their operation remains firmly rooted in the community.
What started as stepping away from corporate life has become a business built on ownership. Ownership of decisions, quality, and the experience they create for both their customers and their team.
And whether it’s a closet, a workspace, or a garage reimagined from the ground up, the goal is the same: to create spaces that don’t just look better—but function better for the people who use them every day.
Because when a space works the way it should, everything else tends to follow.

“Never regret growing older, it is a privilege denied to many,” a quote often attributed to Mark Twain, is a poignant reminder as we all face the inevitability of time. It’s a powerful sentiment, but it doesn’t fully account for the realities that often accompany aging. As people grow older and navigate the changes that come with it, they seek support from doctors, insurance providers, and their communities. What’s often overlooked, however, are the caregivers. The children, grandchildren, neighbors, and professionals who pour themselves into caring for others. Equally overlooked is the quiet loss many aging individuals experience: a fading sense of identity, purpose, and self.
At Independence Health and Therapy, a nonprofit based in Woodstock, those realities are not only acknowledged, but they are also actively addressed. Guided by a mission centered on helping individuals live as independently and as fully as possible, the organization has developed the Day Break Lounge Program, a space designed to support both clients and their caregivers. The program’s purpose is twofold: to provide meaningful engagement and community for participants, while also offering caregivers the vital gift of respite. Time to work, rest, and tend to their own lives, knowing their loved ones are safe, supported, and genuinely enjoying their day.

The need for programs like this is only growing. By 2034, McHenry County is projected to have more residents over the age of 65 than under the age of 18. This shift underscores the importance of resources that support aging populations while helping to delay or even prevent the need for long-term care. The Day Break Lounge serves individuals who may be socially isolated or living with a range of medical conditions, though many of its participants are navigating dementia and memory-related challenges.
Conveniently located near the county seat in Woodstock, the Day Break Lounge is anything but clinical. It is warm, inviting, and full of life. Multiple rooms host guest speakers, crafts, and group exercise classes, each thoughtfully designed to feel like a cozy living space rather than a facility. A kitchen serves breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day. There’s a large sectional, a few recliners, and quiet corners for those who want to rest, sip coffee,

or chat with friends. It’s a place where people feel comfortable, and more importantly, a place where they feel like themselves.
One of those people is Marianne Mazzola, who has been attending the program for two years. We met her on a gray, drizzly morning, where she was settling in for the day with the help of Christina Murphy, Memory Care and Adult Day Program Manager. Christina gently tucked a blanket around Marianne’s legs as they sat on the couch, an interaction that spoke volumes about the level of care provided.

Marianne’s affection for the program is immediate and unmistakable. “I wish I could put a cot in one of the offices and never leave,” she joked with a smile. She is vibrant, sharp, and deeply engaged. She lives with her daughter, Nora, who, like many caregivers, balances a full-time job with the responsibility of caring for a loved one. Neither Marianne nor Nora felt a residential facility was the right fit, and the Day Break Lounge offered a solution that allowed Marianne to remain at home while still receiving the support and stimulation she needed.
Now, two years in, Marianne says she’s grateful every day that Nora found the program. She proudly calls herself the “spokesperson” for the lounge, sharing stories of friendships she’s built and activities she looks forward to. On the day we visited, she was especially excited. It was spa day, and she was getting her nails done. She pointed out other participants, describing their personalities with familiarity and warmth. At one point, she gestured to a Cubs sign in the kitchen and told us about gifting the chef a Cubs shirt.

“It made her so happy, and me too,” she said. This simple statement highlighted the sense of community we felt when we entered.
While Marianne captures the heart of the program, Executive Director John Buckley helps put its impact into perspective. As the leader of Independence Health and Therapy, John speaks candidly about the broader challenges facing aging populations and their caregivers. He points to rising rates of caregiver burnout, sharing that over 40% of caregivers report negative physical health effects as well as the increasing number of older adults in McHenry County.
The Day Break Lounge, he explains, is built around the idea of helping people “age in community.” By providing structure, socialization, and purpose, the program helps participants maintain cognitive function and emotional well-being. It also plays a preventative role: in the past two years, there have been no unexpected hospitalizations among regular attendees, and participants show a slower cognitive decline compared to those not enrolled in similar programs.
But just as important is the impact on caregivers. John underscores the fact that respite care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. When caregivers are supported, they are better able to sustain their roles, maintain their own health, and continue showing up for the people who depend on them.
As McHenry County, and communities across the country, continue to age, programs like the Day Break Lounge are not simply beneficial; they are essential. They remind us that aging is not just about adding years to life, but about adding life to those years, for everyone involved.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Creative Director: Jen Birn
Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill
Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX
MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.
After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.
Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?
A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”
Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?
A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. In speaking to Whiskey lovers (most happen to be men, but do accept me in their brethren as a fellow enthusiast, writer, and educator), I’ve learned a great many opinions on how to drink Whiskey. Specifically, preferences on adding water and ice vary greatly.
A brand ambassador that I had the privilege of listening to recently said the obvious: both dilution and temperature change when you add ice, so if you are going to add something, a little water is best. I personally prefer to use a water dropper, so I can add one drop at a time until I get to the desired taste.

HERE ARE THE DIFFERENCES:
Rocks: Provides the highest rate of dilution as a lot of ice melts quickly. If you are drinking a barrel proof Whiskey, it kind of defeats the purpose as the distiller didn’t add water as they do in every other type of finished Whiskey.
On the Rock: The single rock, cube, or sphere is the slowest to melt and thought to be the most aesthetic. It’s nice if you want to stretch out your tasting. I often order on the rock if I want my drink to last longer.
Neat: This is the way single malt Scotch is served at a tasting event, in a branded Glencairn or Neat glass so that proper nosing for aromas can be achieved - and a dram of Scotch, smaller than an ounce, fits in them perfectly.
Water: As I mentioned above, quoting the brand ambassador, a little water is better for a fine Whiskey over any kind of ice. Often, if ordered with water, the water is served in a separate vessel on the side so you can add in as much as you want.
Quoting another expert on the subject, Richard Paterson of The Dalmore famously and enthusiastically demonstrates in his Scotch classes how to drink single malt Scotch Whiskey: Paterson fills a lowball glass to the rim with ice, adds Scotch and then ceremoniously throws it over his shoulder onto the carpet of the classroom – because that much ice makes the drink worthless. One more quote, never “add green tea or milk to Whiskey. You can add a little water, but not a lot of ice.”
Ultimately, the reason we add ice can be for aesthetics, to stretch out the time spent on one glass, for cooling, and for dilution. However, the number one reason enthusiasts add water is … drumroll please … because adding a little water actually opens up a Whiskey to show more aromas and flavors.
