LIFESTYLE LETTER

Sometimes the Simplest Things Mean the Most December is upon us! It can be a magical time and also a time to get thrown off track or succumb to the message that it's all about the gifts and shopping. But for me, one thing that has become a favorite during the holidays is the LIGHTS! Whether driving through a neighborhood or down major routes, or taking a stroll through the downtowns of Crystal Lake, Huntley or Woodstock, the feeling is the same - pure silent enjoyment. And a light snow coming down dusting the twinkling lights becomes the cherry on top. The perfect night. I admit, I started off as a colorful lights kind of guy. But these days, I really enjoy the soft white lights that outline most of the local towns. Sure, there is a time and place for the LED variety, but those traditional, bigbulbed, soft white lights are what help put me in a relaxed state. It is a simple pleasure that doesn’t blow the budget. And is something to anticipate each year as the holiday season approaches. My wish during this holiday season is that each of you find a simple pleasure that can provide you a bit of peace in your life. Happy Holidays!

It’s All About Community VOLUNTEERING BRINGS JOY TO BOTH THE GIVER AND THE RECEIVER

ARTICLE BY PATTI NOBLE

Studies suggest that people who volunteer through community service and selflessly support the needs of others are the happiest and most content - mind, body and soul. Giving back reduces the effects of anger, stress, anxiety, and depression while increasing connection, self-esteem, and sense of purpose. And if that is the impact on the care provider, imagine the effect on the care receiver. Even one visit, one program or workshop, or one interaction can change the course of a person’s life for the better. Whether relating to the struggles of identity and fitting in, overcoming personal hardships, or witnessing the strife of others, many volunteers understand the significance of serving another person in need. These groups’ missions can inspire us all to get involved. The rewards are endless.

PIONEER MEN’S ALLIANCE RANDYLEGGEE@GMAIL.COM

The Pioneer Men’s Alliance supports Pioneer Center for Human Services and spreads its mission to help improve the lives of individuals challenged by developmental disabilities, behavioral health issues and homelessness. Their contribution consists of creating fundraising events and opportunities, volunteering for a variety of programs, and providing needed materials or improvements to Pioneer Center properties. This vibrant group also volunteers for the Crystal Lake Food Pantry and other organizations with a need for support.

Time Out! In this season of giving, it is important to take a little time to reset

ARTICLE BY PATTI NOBLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAT PFALLER

For many of us, December is a time of hustle, bustle, shopping, and parties. It can be a season of celebration mixed with exhaustion. So, here are some ways to slow down and take a few moments to honor yourself.

Mind & Body Healing

During times of stress, our strength and stamina may become depleted. Indulge in an energy balancing session, such as those offered at Enlightened Balance, to help you replenish, resolve, release and move forward in a joyous way.

Culinary Classes

The act of preparing a meal and sharing it with others brings a sense of connection and fulfillment. Level up your entertaining and presentation skills and be prepared for your next social gathering by taking a culinary class from Fork It Foods.

Read a Book

Grab a blanket, curl up in your favorite chair and get lost in a memoir or novel. Or maybe you prefer a puzzle around the fire. The Green Read, staffed entirely by volunteers, stocks a variety of new and used items for affordable indulgence. Proceeds support The Environmental Defenders.

Massage

Treat yourself to a relaxing Himalayan Hot Salt Massage at Healing Arts Boutique. The warm rocks will help to calm, soothe, and leave you feeling ready to take on the hectic season. A custom facial is another great way to refresh and add vibrancy.

Paint Pottery

Whether with a group of friends, your kids, or by yourself, painting pottery is an opportunity to relax and also create a keepsake piece of art. Join a sip and paint night at Color Me Mine where there are hundreds of pottery options to choose from.

Exercise

Get outside and take a brisk walk, go for a run, or hike. The fresh air, change of scenery and repetitive motion is known to have a calming effect on the nervous system. And if you need gear, stop by The Running Depot where the friendly and knowledgeable staff will dress you from head to toe.

Yoga Whether a gentle flow class or a more invigorating power class, yoga is a great way to step away from the busyness, close your eyes, stretch, and just breathe. Studios such as Sweet Feet Yoga, Lakewood, have drop-in and punch card options available for your convenience. Nurturing ourselves recharges us to be able to care for others.

Art Classes

Step out of the cold and into a cozy art studio located on the picturesque back lawn of the historic Dole Mansion. Creative Arts Studio is suited for all ages, abilities and disciplines. So, when your mind is running with all the holiday “to-dos,” take a break and embrace your creative side. Whether making stained glass, sketching, painting with oils or pastels, or one of the many other options, you can find your quiet here.

A Local Chef’s Inspirational Journey CHEF ZAK IS LEADING THE WAY IN ECO-CONSCIOUS DINING ARTICLE BY KATIE BOBROW PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID BRADBURN

In the heart of downtown Crystal Lake is a chef who isn’t just passionate about whipping up culinary delights but also positive change for his community. Zak Dolezal, chef-owner of local favorite Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen, is a man of many passions. Some he stumbled into unexpectedly and others have inspired him for as long as he can remember. The most obvious passion of Chef Zak’s is food. But he explains that it wasn’t always that way. Although he worked through high school at his parent’s restaurant, his passion for cooking wasn’t ignited until he pursued a formal education at Kendall College of Culinary Arts. After his education, he worked alongside Michelin Star chefs and saw how good food often came from within the community and was inspired by how food could bring communities together. Chef Zak's commitment to environmental sustainability is a deeply rooted passion, as Zak says he “had a connection with the planet, even at an early age” and was moved by the plight of endangered species, an injustice that left an indelible mark on his conscience. Today, Duke's stands as a shining example of eco-conscious dining, proudly holding certification from The Green Restaurant Association.

20

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

“Chef Zak’s passion for food, the environment, and HipHop has created a one-ofa-kind culinary haven right here in our community.”

Achieving this distinction is no small feat, requiring a year's worth of meticulous metrics and data collection, not to mention the associated costs. Yet, for Zak, it's a labor of love, a testament to his unwavering dedication to the environment and his community. Many restaurants fall short of even basic recycling practices, let alone venturing into greener initiatives like composting, water conservation, and the elimination of Styrofoam. Zak doesn't lay blame at the feet of other restaurant owners, acknowledging the high hurdles and ever-advancing standards. What truly sets him apart is his desire to be an educator, both to his community and fellow restauranteurs. He views Duke's as a powerful instrument of change, a living testament that restaurants can embrace green practices and still thrive. Another, possibly surprising, passion of Zak’s is HipHop. Although you may not assume it by his calm and quiet demeanor, Chef Zak is inspired by the fact that HipHop doesn’t shy away from hard truths. Chef Zak says, “Duke’s is doing the same. HipHop is rebellious and speaks out and we do that by challenging the food industry.” Chef Zak also goes on to talk about the shared rhythm in music and cooking, the movement and depth of feeling he gets from both, as well as the way music, like food, can bring unexpected people together. You can get a taste of Chef Zak’s passion for music in his new venture, Duke’s Inferno in Woodstock. Duke’s Inferno boasts a wood-fired kitchen and is, of course, eco-conscious. Zak’s love of HipHop is highlighted in the many dishes named after artists or songs with meaning to him, and on weekends you can find a DJ creating a harmonious fusion of flavors and beats. Chef Zak’s passion for food, the environment, and HipHop has created a one-of-a-kind culinary haven right here in our community. So, whether you're looking to tantalize your taste buds, minimize your carbon footprint, or simply enjoy a comfortable and cozy social setting while sipping on a unique brew, Duke’s is the place to be. And with Chef Zak at the helm, you can be sure you're in for a delicious, sustainable, and hip experience.

Mary Boyer shares the story of her journey to fitness and supporting others on their path to better health ARTICLE BY PATTI NOBLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATTY BELL

22

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

Sometimes, when things fall apart, they are actually falling into place. But in 2008, Mary Boyer may not have been able to see things that way. At the time, her marriage was ending in a cloud of chaos and debt, she lost her home, had little to no money to her name, and had young children she needed to care for. She wasn’t sure how she would keep a roof over their heads and feed them, much less build a career and a new life for them all. On top of that, the years of being told that she would never achieve success weighed heavily on her. Back then, she would never have predicted becoming the fitness/nutritional/lifestyle coach and thriving owner of TruFitness that she is today. The journey to get here was long and often bumpy, but Mary wouldn’t have it any other way. Not the stand-out student, Mary struggled her way through school and was never really interested in much of it, anyway. If it wasn’t for gymnastics (she was

a competitive gymnast for most of her youth) she most likely would not have finished high school. But Mary has ALWAYS had determination, a strong will, grit and tenacity. It was those qualities that carried her through her younger years and are the reasons why she is where she is today. The same characteristics are immediately apparent upon meeting her. Over the years, she has heard a lot of “shouldn’t” and “can’t” from people who she had hoped were in her corner. Even her parents expressed their skepticism. Maybe it was an attempt to protect her from what they thought the “big world” would do to her, or maybe it is their own narrow view of the opportunities that are possible for their daughter. Regardless, Mary continues to work hard to prove that she is worthy, deserving and capable. She TRULY walks the walk! Like many young people, when Mary completed high school, she wasn’t sure

what was next for her. She had a constant, flowing stream of ideas without solid direction. But she knew she had to make some decisions on what she “wanted to be when she grew up”. So, she started with a process of elimination and what she did NOT want: to go to college, or any sort of formal, classroom education. Two undeniable truths were that staying involved in gymnastics was a must and that she loved styling friends’ hair and makeup and helping them feel good in their own skin. So, she enrolled in cosmetology school and started coaching gymnastics. She obtained her cosmetology certifications and continued cutting hair and coaching. All the while, she had a dream of owning a big property in Texas…after all, she was a huge Dynasty and Dallas fan. This imagined property wasn’t one of those sprawling ranches with horses, oilmen and cocktail parties, but instead more of a large piece of land with a converted

barn where she could coach and also train people to better health and fitness. And of course, this business model included a hair salon. Well, she may not have moved to Texas or owned a rambling estate. And her "compound" is more of a warehouse-style space in an industrial park area. But she is still just as passionate about helping people become the best versions of themselves, mind, body and spirit. She has brought to life some of those very same dreams she had so many years ago. She left the highly competitive and strict world of girls' gymnastics to earn ISSA fitness training certifications that she uses as a personal trainer and to run group fitness classes. Other specialties range from wellness and lifespan coaching to nutrition education. She is passionate about supporting women through menopause and in 2018, authored a book on the subject titled “The Menopause Movement: 8 Steps to a Happy & Healthy Lifestyle for Women of a Certain Age” More recently, she incorporated a hyperbolic chamber and infrared sauna into her fitness center. She believes in the healing properties of each and offers affordable sessions for members to try them out for themselves. And, yes, she still puts her hairstylist skills to work every now and then. For someone who never felt connected to school, it turns out she actually enjoys learning and LOVES sharing that knowledge with others. As Mary explains, “I am most proud when I get to help others along their journey to achieve their health and fitness goals.”

The TruFitness mission is to help others improve their quality of life by providing affordable, safe fitness and wellness services. Mary’s goal has always been to create a supportive environment that facilitates lasting change by applying tangible lifestyle tools. Her “TruFitness Tribe” includes a wide range of ages and abilities. Her commitment to providing opportunities to all has evolved to include an adaptive program named “Tru-ly Able”. Individuals with a variety of needs can build strength and confidence in these group classes. Young adults on the autism spectrum, for example, practice balance, endurance, and functional strength and stretching techniques. This program grew from talking with parents and caregivers who were struggling to find compassionate outlets. So, Mary relied on instinct to fill the void and now has plans to further evolve this program to reach a variety of physical and cognitive abilities while also providing a bit of respite for care providers. Whether training clients or developing new fitness opportunities, Mary’s dedication is admirable. If there is one takeaway from her journey, it is that much like weight training involves muscles breaking down before they grow stronger, often the same goes for the journey of life. The greatest lessons often come from the struggles. But we can trust that they are actually coming together and will land exactly in the places they belong. Just ask Mary.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign

2023 30

T R E N D SE T T E R | L IFE + C ULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
