IN A CHAOTIC WORLD, PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR INSPIRES WARMTH AND COMFORT

HOUSE CALL | ARTS + CULTURE 14

In the heart of one of the most notable museums in the country, hangs a painting that can only be described as super blue. The piece, named ‘Untitled blue monochrome (IKB 82)’ by Yves Klein, shares space with the abstract and complex work of Picasso and Kandinsky, yet it does not have any less appeal however simple it may seem. While some, including this writer, are inclined to feel that a plain blue painting is elementary, there is a reason it has been admired for decades. The choice for

the monochrome blue was intentional, as is every shade in art and design. The same is true for the choice of the 2024 Pantone Color of Year, the soft and gentle hue between pink and orange, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz.

Beginning in 1999, Pantone, known for its color matching system that allows designers to custom match samples with a computerized tool, released its first Color of the Year to spark a conversation about color and engage the art and design community. A global team at the Pantone Color Institute studies societal trends in fashion and design year-round

to determine which shade is selected. This year’s choice was made to inspire human connection and a feeling of warmth, comfort, and optimism in a busy world. Whether you add Peach Fuzz to a website or wall, its gentle, velvety hue has an influence on emotion, perspective and decision-making.

From the phone case you buy, the clothes you wear, or the shade of banana you choose at the store, color has great power, and for the past 25 years, Pantone has worked to prove the influential relationship between color and culture should be recognized.

THE DESIGN HOUSE OWNERS, TY AND JENNIFER HOMEYER, SHARE THEIR STORY OF HOME REMODELS AND GOD’S PLAN

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HOME + DESIGN
16

Two years after settling into their new home in North Texas, Ty and Jennifer Homeyer were faced with a decision that many others would ponder in the coming months of 2008: What do we do now? When Ty’s future at the job that had brought the couple and their three children to the DallasFort Worth area became uncertain, Jennifer, a registered nurse at the time, and her husband made the decision to control their own destiny by purchasing a small business. Within a month, they were the new owners of a modest flooring store in Denton with a bumpy road ahead of them.

Despite the odds against them, the building the Homeyers purchased would transform into the Design House: a top-rated, relationship-oriented home interior remodeling business that provides “superior design, quality products, installation and build services” to customers in the DFW area. By understanding the importance of reliability, relationships, and trusting God, the Design House has become unrecognizable from its meager beginning, but the transformation was not intentional.

Nearly a month after making the decision to run their own business, Jennifer’s busy days in the hospital had turned quiet as she began managing Carpets Plus in Denton as the new owner. The store was not highly trafficked as the height of the recession began.

Two months after purchasing the building, Ty quit his current job and began his own consulting business. Though this choice was a gamble, it was a risk that paid off in multiple ways. “He made more money doing that than we would have if we had stuck with the safe choice,” Jennifer said.

Ty’s consulting consisted of various home renovation products that were then brought into Carpets Plus to sell. “In order to keep the store going, I had to sell whatever came through the door.”

Through the years, the couple established lasting relationships with vendors that would continue to supply their business. Recognizing the importance of affordable pricing and quality products, the Homeyers opened Stonemeyer Granite, so they would know exactly where the materials come from.

Ten years later, the Design House was born, replacing the ‘Carpets Plus’ title above the front doors in 2018. Instead of focusing on one aspect of home remodeling, the Homeyers realized that “many times when people are doing floors, they’re doing other things to the house,” Jennifer said, “We can take your house down to studs, and redo it. That’s what we now specialize in.”

The Design House has capitalized on that fact. From cabinets, doors, windows, countertops, and so on, the

Homeyers have perfected their craft and kept their business in the family. In 2022, their oldest son opened ‘Haltex Plumbing’ which handles all plumbing work for the Design House.

While some aspects of the company are local, they have also built relationships with some of the largest and wellknown suppliers in the industry. One of those being Daltile, a long-time partner of the Design House and “America’s leader in tile.” The once-small company in Denton is now one of seven Daltile statement dealers in the area. Finding the precise tile for your home will be even easier with the new updates the Design House has set for this year.

Partnering to offer more services and products is not the only way the growing business has progressed over the years. To simplify the shopping experience, the Design House is updating its 10,000 sq. ft. showroom with a portion dedicated to Daltile. Instead of browsing materials from different manufacturers spread around the space, the new showroom will devote specific areas to brands, making finding and selecting what you want a breeze.

If you don’t find what you want in the Daltile section, walk a few steps away to the Porcelanosa area, a Spanish retailer of luxury surfaces, fixtures, and tiles and a recent partner of the Design House.

Though the Design House space may be smaller than that of a Home Depot or Lowes, customers’ choices are not limited, and they offer most of the same, high-quality goods, often for a cheaper price and quicker shipping time. “There is no project too small, as there is also not likely a project that is too big,” Jennifer said.

Though luxury items like a Tiffany-Blue bathtub or rose-gold faucets are readily available for purchase and installation, the Design House goods and services are fit for any type of customer. In fact, Jennifer has served as one of 18-20 owners across the nation on the board that helps Shaw Flooring, one of the largest flooring companies around, make decisions on what products to sell for the last two-and-a-half years.

The Design House is the product of years of carefully combining Ty’s business background, Jennifer’s steadfast personality, their reliance on family, and trusting God through it all. No matter the ask, the Homeyers likely know exactly what is necessary to transform your home, just as they did to their business in “pure Homeyer fashion.”

The Design House is a Denton, TX flooring store and a top provider of quality remodeling solutions including countertops, cabinets, window coverings, shutters & draperies, installation and build services. +1 940-3824340 // thedesignhousedfw.com

From big screens to book swaps to succulents

Simple Springtime Hosting

HOSTING TIPS | HOME + DESIGN

Rachel Parcell

Most things in life rarely go as expected. Alanis Morrisette wrote an entire song about the irony of it all. You can plan for days, weeks, months, even years and when the day finally arrives, there will usually be something you didn’t account for, altering the original blueprint. This rings especially true when it comes to party planning, which is just another added stress to the process of opening your home to entertain guests, but it is avoidable. You don’t need to overwhelm yourself and family by juggling every aspect of throwing a party on your own. Instead, ensure your party is a hit by making your home a celebration destination with little to no work for yourself by using any of these unique and memorable concepts.

https://backyardhibachi.com

BACKYARD MOVIE

Bring the big screen to you! Ensure your viewing experience isn’t interrupted by selecting the audience for the film of your choice by transforming your backyard into your very own movie theater, popcorn included. Allow the event staff to supply you and your guests with an unforgettable experience, perfect for any celebration. Just rent a screen for the night and select which snacks to serve, no waiting in long lines is necessary.

BOOK SWAP

Turn your home into a not-so-little free library and a book-lover’s dream by hosting a book swap for your next event. Have guests bring their favorite novels at the moment and ask them to wrap their books to add a bit of mystery. Place the books together on a table surrounded by chairs and enjoy watching everyone unwrap their new obsession. Increase suspense by allowing each person the chance to steal a book that was previously unwrapped. Enhance the experience by serving cocktails based on your favorite book or handing out customized bookmarks.

“YOU DON ’T NEED TO LEAVEHOME TO ENJOY A NEW EX PERIENCE WITH GOOD COMPANY.”

HIBACHI AT HOME

Transform your backyard, garage, or driveway into a culinary destination by purchasing a backyard hibachi experience for you and your guests. Allow your private chef to handle dinner and entertainment for the night all in the comfort of your own home. Just like in the restaurant, choose your preferred meal, but enjoy it around the company of your choice. All meals are prepared to order, so sit back and savor the bold Japanese flavors with a fire show and sake!

BUILD YOUR OWN TERRARIUM

No party favors are needed with this at-home event that is sure to welcome Spring. Green-thumb or not, creating your own terrarium is an easy and engaging

way to make lasting memories with your guests, at least for as long as their plants last afterward. With a funky glass, some dirt, moss and succulents, guests can design their own ecosystem that can be admired for months to come. This interactive party can be done as big or as little as desired. Spruce up the theme by creating place settings and cards for each guest. Set up a table with a few gardening utensils and get to planting!

SIP AND PAINT

Tap into your inner artist by creating an at-home paint-and-sip experience for your guests. You don’t need to be a professional to design your own work of art - you’re not expected to produce the next Mona Lisa or Starry Night, so sip on a refreshment and enjoy watching others attempt their own masterpieces alongside you. Purchase a kit to bring all material needed, directly to your doorstep, or if you desire more direction, hire an instructor to guide you on your artistic endeavor. Regardless of skill level, relax and create lasting memories with this engaging party activity.

You don’t need to leave home to enjoy a new experience with good company. Design your own party, but leave the stress of planning in the past. Bearing the weight of entertaining on your own is not necessary to host an unforgettable event.

Spring is here and things are growing and opening and changing and blooming. It is time to get outside and be a part of a new beginning and a fresh start. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a front row seat to nature’s glory and splendor? This experience is waiting for you. All you have to do is walk through the door… into your own backyard. Creating a beautiful outdoor space and experience will enhance your enjoyment of this wonderful season and provide a place to enjoy friends and family in a beautiful, natural setting.

Many may dream of having their very own islands. A luxury that is possible without even boarding a plane. The bridge and sunken area of this island give a feeling of settling down into relaxation after a long day. It is perfect for enjoying the company of others while sitting together around the fire with a glass of wine. Here is the chance to get in a pool and not worry about messing up your hair.

Crossing a bridge is the beginning of a new adventure. The anticipation of what is on the other side is both fun and exciting. Give your CONTINUED >

guests the feeling of discovery as they cross over into the beauty that awaits them. It can continue into a lush garden, a lounging area, a refreshing pool or an inviting kitchen. The bridge can also be a stopping place for homecoming pictures, a kite launch, even wedding vows. Enjoying the view from a highpoint makes a bridge a perfect addition as well.

Spring is not complete without wildlife. A pond adds a unique and peaceful experience that creates a relaxing environment. Incorporating a pond into your landscape provides both sights and sounds that encourage peaceful feelings and inner calmness. Having a whole ecosystem is fun to watch and a perfect place to catch tadpoles for the kids’ or grandkids’ classrooms. A stream with smooth river rocks provides another natural water source. Take off your shoes and delight in being a kid again.

A backyard isn’t just for relaxation. Whether it be a basketball, tennis or pickleball court, there is sure to be some healthy competition and a great workout taking place there. Family and friends of all ages can enjoy reliving their glory days or engaging in a Fourth

of July tournament with the neighbors. Get out there and show them what you’ve got! A wonderful spot to blow off steam after a hard day or challenge the kids to a game of PIG (also known as disguised conversation with a teenager).

Even smaller areas offer an opportunity for an intimate space in the outdoors. Complete with lush plants and crawling vines, your hideaway can be a place to get lost in a good book with a cup of coffee on a cool spring morning. What a wonderful setting for a book club, a dinner party, ladies Bunco night or poker night with the big game on in the background.

Our friends and designers at Complete Landsculpture are ready to help make your dreams a reality. Your backyard is an important extension of your home and provides space for amazing possibilities. Consider allowing them to create an outdoor masterpiece with expertise and acute observation. You can find them at www.completelandsculpture.com or by phone at 214.358.5296. THE ART OF WALLPAPER

Designer Helen Nicholson shares the comeback story of wallpaper
TREND SETTER | HOME + DESIGN 28

When I was growing up in the 70s and early 80s, we had this to-die-for grass cloth wallpapering in our dining room. I remember being fascinated with the craftsmanship of this finery, even back then. I would run my hands over the tightly woven textures and knots. I loved the uneven lines, how it had been hung purposely with its mismatched stripes. My mother served many meals in this beautiful room, and I loved staring at this paper while we dined.

Years later, in our previous home, I would wallpaper our dining room with a pattern very similar to that paper, and it was beautiful. But before that, I had the wallpapers of the early 90s that so many of our homes displayed in this era. I believe we must start here so that we can remember why wallpapering lost its place in our homes for many years to follow.

The papering of the 90s had us using a print (grapes and vines), a coordinating stripe in the same jewel-colored tones, and then a coordinating border. We just couldn’t get enough of this look… that is, until the day we finally could! This papering was removed about as

2 3

fast as it had been added to our homes, and the hand trowel texturing became all the rage! But when we were done with this trend, we also couldn’t get it off our walls fast enough.

I like to call these “the overdone years.” These walls were hard to decorate around and defined the whole look of our houses.

1 CONTINUED > 29 MARCH 2024 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/CROSSTIMBERS

So how does one even decide what trend to follow now? As designers, this is the magical question we get asked from the moment we walk into our client’s door: What is the latest trend and how long will it last? And this is where I ask this bigger question

instead: What do YOU love? What speaks to YOU? What story does your home tell about YOU? This is where I believe, we must start–especially when it comes to choosing wallpapers again.

1 & 5 For me, birds, nature, and anything involving creation, are scattered all throughout my home. This is what speaks to me. I knew I would never tire of anything with timeless florals, little birds, or butterflies. I had already been scouring through online sites, so the moment my eyes landed on the papers, it was an easy choice!

2 & 6 For my client and friend, she chose something that had “a cottage vibe with a clean looking print that also had a slight flair of contemporary” from the high-performance Chesapeake Wallpapers, which are great for laundry rooms. The scale of her print was so perfect for her warm and cozy laundry room space, [it] made her feel like accessories were not really needed, it was just perfect all on its own.

3 & 5 So, whether you are a print person, or a textured person, finding the perfect wallpaper is really just about finding what you enjoy and what speaks to you. My favorite wallpaper vendors include Texas Paint and Wallpaper, Rifle Paper Co., Brewster, and York Wallpapers. Hop online to search Wayfair, Etsy, and Pinterest for the latest styles too. But most of all, if it speaks to you, go for it!!

Mahogany Manhattan

The perfect cocktail for warm days and cold nights

Though the sun sets early in the evening and Springtime has yet to officially commence, allow sips of this chocolate and cherry-infused cocktail to warm you up until the new season or cool you down when it arrives. The assertive flavors of each ingredient blend neatly to deliver a strong flavor with a subtle sweetness and herbal taste. By adding a few extra ingredients, this recipe is a refreshed version of a timeless drink.

ingredients:

• 1 ½ ounces of Makers

• ¾ ounce of sweet vermouth

• ¾ Luxardo Liquor

• 3 dashes of chocolate bitters

directions:

Step 1. Add ice to a shaker.

Step 2. Measure and pour ingredients over ice, and shake until combined.

Step 3. Strain and pour the mixture over an ice ball in a glass.

Step 4. Skewer the Luxardo Cherry and place across the top of the glass for garnish. Enjoy!
