The June Gentlemen’s issue is always special because we have an opportunity to recognize outstanding men in our lives and community.

“Men of Influence” showcases four fantastic leaders who help make our communities kinder and better.  They bring their passions and experiences forward to serve those in need as well as the entire community.  We are so grateful for their faithful commitment to others.

In “Watch D.O.G.S.” we are taking you back to the school crosswalk and elementary days! Or perhaps it is your first-time hearing about this wonderful program that celebrates dads and encourages school involvement.

Local Experiences this month offers “Our Picks for The Man Clan” –where we highlight local pursuits the men in our lives can enjoy such as distillery tours, gaming, golf, you name it.

When June hits it’s officially summer and you may be itching to get out in “The Great Outdoors.”  Flower Mound offers myriad activities for nature enthusiasts so read on and make a commitment to explore your own backyard.

Our “Father’s Day Gift Guide” showcases presents that dad is sure to enjoy on his big day.  Something else he may love: “Smoky Gin and Topo” is the perfect cocktail for the summer grilling months.  Check out our recipe for this smoky, herbaceous concoction that will be a crowd pleaser at your next gathering.

“Signing Off” is a personal note from me that I hope you will take a moment to read.  As we enter June – embrace it all.  The kickoff to summer is sweet and full of promise.  Let’s make memories and be intentional with our time.

Happy June!

Watch D.O.G.S.

Program Celebrates Dads and Encourages School Involvement

For the past 10 years, Bridlewood Elementary School has welcomed dads of students to participate in a program that has become a beloved part of campuses throughout LISD. The Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program is one of the nation’s largest and most respected family engagement organizations that brings joy to students, educators and local dads.

The Watch D.O.G.S. program was established to provide positive male role models for students. Participants also provide an additional layer of school security, help reduce bullying and offer some peace of mind for teachers and students to focus on learning.

“Each year it gets better and better!” says Meredith Whitehouse, principal of Bridlewood Elementary. “The response has always been positive from the dads that participate. They always seem to gain a new appreciation and insight into what happens at school every day.”

Jonathan Cervenka, a member of Bridlewood Elementary’s Watch D.O.G.S. program for the past six years, agrees. “I found it as a great opportunity to get to know the teachers, staff and other families in our community. It also allowed me to see my children interact inside the school both with their peers and

teachers in a way that isn’t possible without being a volunteer on campus.”

Jonathan says Watch D.O.G.S. begin the day by greeting students and divvying out high fives and encouragement. “Then, the staff outlines the daily activities and encourages the Watch D.O.G.S. to visit with not only your child’s class, but also interact with multiple grades at recess and assist with lunch duty,” he says. “Often, there are special assignments requested by the administration and teachers to ensure the school is looking its best. We’re also more watchful eyes on campus, which is a great feeling.”

Ms. Whitehouse says the Watch D.O.G.S. have achieved rockstar status at school. “The Watch D.O.G.S. become instant celebrities on morning announcements, in the hallways and especially on the playground. Teachers have been happy to have the dads as volunteers, especially those who are comfortable being able to mentor small groups of students.”

Historically, moms have been room parents, volunteers and the familiar faces around school, but Watch D.O.G.S. are changing that narrative. “Having male role models on campus is a huge benefit for the students to see,” Ms. Whitehouse says. “Giving dads a unique opportunity to be in the school where they are not singularly attached to their child but are a campus-wide asset really spreads the image that dads are welcome at the campus, as well.

“Dads also lend a unique perspective to things at school with input from different professions and experiences that can have a huge impact on how things are conducted in the future,” she says.

Jonathan says Watch D.O.G.S. participants are equally rewarded by the experience, which he highly recommends. “I absolutely encourage all dads and father figures to participate, as it’s a way to give back to the school and allows for a glimpse into the daily schedule of your child and how hard the teachers, staff and students work every day.”

MEN OF INFLUENCE

Albert Schweitzer said, “The purpose of human life is to serve and to show compassion and the will to help others.” From bringing baseball and buddies to an underserved community … to creating hope and healing for young men … to leading a city with neighborly values … and showing a young generation the beauty of the great outdoors, these four men have shown they have hearts to serve.

JEFF FISHER

YOU WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN BRINGING MIRACLE LEAGUE NORTH TEXAS TO FLOWER MOUND. WHY WAS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

I was first exposed to Miracle League in the Fall of 2017 when the youth baseball team I coached volunteered as ‘buddies’ with Miracle League DFW in Arlington.  Watching my son and the other young men I coached interact with the Miracle League athletes taught us the true joy of the game of baseball.  We volunteered at least once every season for the next few years.  After one of our volunteer games in Arlington, I connected with a Miracle League parent from Flower Mound.  This connection made me realize there was an underserved population of amazing athletes in the Flower Mound area.  Two years later, we’re 140 athletes strong, playing on a turf field and making memories of baseball for all with some amazing athletes!

HOW MEANINGFUL HAS IT BEEN TO WORK WITH MIRACLE LEAGUE NORTH TEXAS?

Miracle League North Texas brings baseball for all to a previously underserved population of individuals with special needs.  Athletes get to experience the JOY of the game; parents get to cheer on their child from behind the fence; and our buddies get to connect personally with someone they may not have had the opportunity to interact with before. I leave our field with a heart full of joy after our games every Saturday.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO RECEIVE FLOWER MOUND’S 2022 OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP AWARD?

I actually didn’t know the award existed until the night it was presented. I was already at Town Hall preparing to present an update on the growth and progress of Miracle League North Texas to Town Council.  In the matter of a few minutes, the Town Hall lobby was filled with Miracle League athletes. It makes me truly proud of the work we’ve done and the potential that lies ahead for our amazing athletes.

DANIEL JAWORSKI

MAYOR, HIGHLAND VILLAGE

YOU HAVE SERVED YOUR COUNTRY AND COMMUNITY IN ONE ASPECT OR ANOTHER FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS. WHY DO YOU FEEL IT HAS BEEN IMPORTANT TO DO SO?

I have just always believed in serving. The people I admired most growing up were people who gave back to their communities and our country, so I was just inspired to do my part. Highland Village and the values of the families I knew growing up played a large part in shaping who I became so I feel an obligation to pay back on that investment.

AS MAYOR, WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR HIGHLAND VILLAGE?

In spite of all of the changes and ways our city has evolved since the first big growth spurt in the 1980s, when I was a kid, the values and culture of the city have remained the same. It’s always been the ideal place to live and raise a family; where kids can ride their bikes and play outdoors, if they choose, and parents know the parents of their kids’ friends. We still know our neighbors. My lifelong best friend of over 40 years still lives down the street. I want to make sure I do my part to protect and insure that for our city.

BOB WILLIAMS

FOUNDER AND CEO, RANCH HANDS RESCUE

YOU CHANGED THE ENTIRE TRAJECTORY OF YOUR CAREER IN 2009 WHEN YOU BEGAN RANCH HANDS RESCUE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO SO?

In 2007 I suffered a stroke, and I decided to retire from Motorola. I decided then that I would devote whatever time I had left to helping others. In 2009 Ranch Hands Rescue was formed as an animal sanctuary for special needs animals. In 2010 our counseling program started with an emphasis on the 1-10% of individuals, primarily children, who needed a different form or more aggressive approach to mental health counseling. We were the first in the country to partner abused and neglected animals with abused and neglected people. We discovered early on that these animals that were hurt so badly developed a bond with individuals who have suffered severe trauma. To date we’ve helped thousands of people. In June of 2021, the first safe house in the country for young men 18 and above who have been sex trafficked opened. In addition to that, our Case Manager team serves an average of 50 male clients around the country to provide health care services, housing and other victim-related services while we build out our new 40-acre facility and add additional beds. Bob’s House of Hope is a four-year program to not only help these young men work through their horrific trauma but to provide an education or a trade and it focuses on providing hope and healing for each young man in our care. Most importantly, we strive to introduce God and spiritual teachings in our program and daily life. Developing Ranch Hands Rescue and Bob’s House of Hope is the greatest thing I’ve ever accomplished in my life.

WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH IF THEY FEEL CALLED TO DO SO?

I believe with all my heart that God puts you where he needs you and that God brings people together for a reason; there are no mistakes. My advice is not only to follow in God’s footsteps but to listen to Him and to do our best to always help others.

RUSSELL MARTZ

OUTDOOR EDUCATION TEACHER, BRIARHILL MIDDLE SCHOOL

IN A TIME WHERE YOUTH OFTEN ARE IMMERSED IN TECHNOLOGY, YOU INTRODUCE THEM TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

We have begun to lose track of the physical world around us. Kids live virtually. The first- hand knowledge and understanding of how nature works and our role in the world around us is essential to the future of nature and our own emotional health. It is important to me that kids understand our place as stewards and that they have an appreciation for the world around them. We remember ‘experiences’ much longer than we remember ‘things,’ and I try very hard to provide those experiences. This is my way of paying forward what my father gave me: a way to bond with my family, a love of the outdoors and an appreciation for the world around us.

IN ADDITION TO YOUR WORK IN THE CLASSROOM, YOU BEGAN DOC’S MEMORIAL OUTDOOR ADVENTURES. TELL US ABOUT THIS PROGRAM.

Doc’s is a tribute to my dad, who took me hunting and fishing even before I was old enough to understand what they were. He volunteered on my trips as a guide, a cook and a mentor to many of my students, before he passed, and treated them like he treated me and his grandkids. You can find out more about Doc’s at our Facebook page, Doc’s Memorial Outdoor Adventures, and our soon to be released website: docsmemorialoutdooradventures.com

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Flower Mound Offers Myriad Activities for Nature Enthusiasts

The sun is shining, and the weather is warm, which means it’s time to explore the great outdoors! Our area is filled with trails, fishing holes and other natural treasures to make this summer a grand adventure.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | SPORTS + RECREATION

HIT THE TRAILS

Flower Mound’s trail system has grown from three miles in 1989 to more than 59 miles of hiking and biking routes. Some trails are located within individual parks, and others comprise a series of trail systems connecting through parks along natural greenway corridors or subdivisions.

A favorite among local hikers and especially mountain bikers is Northshore Trail, located at 2908 North Park Drive. The moderately challenging 18-mile route meanders along Grapevine Lake and offers forest and water views.

The Cross Timbers Equestrian Trail is a favorite with horseback riders. The 6.5-mile trail is considered moderately challenging and typically takes around two hours to complete. And best of all, it’s a quiet route with not much foot traffic.

The Equestrian Trail includes lake views and wildflowers, but be careful – visitors say some spots can get muddy.

GO FISHING

Flower Mound has multiple stocked ponds where residents are allowed to fish. They include Amy Lane Park Pond, Cortadera Park Pond, Heritage Park Pond, Leonard and Helen Johns Park Pond, Parker Square Park Pond, Post Oak Park Pond, Rheudasil Park Pond, Spring Lake Park Pond and Wilkerson Park Pond.

Some of the species available in local ponds include largemouth bass, channel catfish, bullhead catfish, bluegill, sunfish and rainbow trout.

While the town does not require a permit to fish in park ponds, the State of Texas requires anyone 17 or older to have a fishing license. Licenses can be purchased at local sporing goods stores or online.

Flower Mound allows anglers to keep what they catch, but they must adhere to state size and bag

limits depending on the species of fish. More information is available at flower-mound.com.

SPEND TIME WITH MAN’S BEST FRIEND

Grab your pup and head to the Hound Mound Dog Park, the town’s five-acre canine paradise, located on the east side of Heritage Park. Enjoy natural shade, seating areas, water fountains, beautiful landscaping and the camaraderie of other dog enthusiasts. But be sure to follow the dog park rules and etiquette. Visit flower-mound.com for more information.

BECOME A STUDENT OF NATURE

Visit LLELA and become totally immersed in nature. Known as the 2600-acre classroom, LLELA is the quintessential outdoor experience. Visitors can enjoy myriad recreational activities, including hiking, birding, wildlife viewing, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, picknicking and guided activities.

LLELA’s mission is “to heal the land and restore the bond between people and nature, ensuring the preservation of our natural heritage for the future.”

For a list of events and activities, visit LLELA.org. LLELA is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week and entry costs only $5 per vehicle.

HIT THE LINKS

For the golfing enthusiasts, a favorite among locals is Bridlewood Golf Club. The 25-acre course is woven through the beautiful Bridlewood neighborhood and is designed to challenge all skill levels.

The course was designed to accentuate the rolling terrain and trees without disturbing them. The result is an open feeling front nine with hardwoods and Timber Creek meandering through the back nine. For more information, visit bridlewoodgolf.com.

Smoky Gin & Topo

This Smoky, Herbaceous Concoction is Perfect For Summer Grilling Months

Smoked cocktails are all the rage right now. The smoky notes add depth and flavor to classic libations and are especially fun to try during the summer grilling months. This Smoked Rosemary Gin & Topo is a fun Texas twist on the classic, refreshing gin & tonic. Cheers!

SMOKED ROSEMARY GIN & TOPO

Ingredients

• 2 ounces gin

• 1 Tablespoon smoked rosemary simple syrup

• 3 ounces Topo Chico (or other seltzer water)

• 1 fresh rosemary sprig

• Lemon wedges

Instructions

Burn just the end of the rosemary sprig, carefully, on a plate, until smoking, and place cocktail glass over the top of the sprig to trap the smoke.

Memorable Ways to Celebrate The Father Figure in Your Life

HOW TO | LIFE + CULTURE 32

LEARN ABOUT HIS FAMILY TREE

Family heritage websites can offer insight into dad’s past and be an interesting way to study the history of your family. Present Dad with a report on his ancestors or dig in together!

PLAN A STAYCATION

You don’t need to go very far to have a great time with Dad! Explore a new neck of your own woods with a family staycation. You can go out on the town, stay at a fancy hotel and maybe even enjoy some room service!

GO BIRD WATCHING

Lay out a blanket in your backyard and grab your binoculars for a peaceful, naturefilled day. Make a list of how many different kinds of birds you see and guess if you can identify them.

GO BOWLING

Bowling is a timeless classic Dad is sure to enjoy. Bonus if the bowling alley has an arcade, chicken wings and Dad’s favorite beverage of choice.

PLAY FRISBEE GOLF AS A FAMILY

Find a local frisbee golf course and grab a slot for the family to play. This activity is fun for both young and old and helps you take advantage of being in the beautiful outdoors together.

SPOIL HIM WITH BREAKFAST IN BED

Breakfast in bed isn’t just for Mother’s Day. Dads can enjoy it too! Whip up some of his favorite brunch treats and start Father’s Day off the right way.

06 09

HAVE A WINE AND PAINT NIGHT

Sign up for an artistic experience at a local wine and paint shop so Dad can let his creative side show and you can have a custom piece of art for years to come.

TACKLE A TASK TOGETHER

Is Dad a hands-on guy? Why not spend the day constructing a tree house or painting a birdhouse? Or better yet, help him organize the garage or start a garage redesign.

DO A FITNESS CLASS TOGETHER

Consider signing him up for a fitness class together. Whether he likes cycling, boxing or HIIT, encourage him to be adventurous and try something new.

FIRE UP THE BACKYARD GRILL

There’s no greater way to get to a Dad’s heart than the word “barbecue”. Grab extravagant meats like a rack of ribs or wagyu beef burgers and go to town.

CONSTRUCT SOMETHING OUT OF LEGOS

Harken back to Dad’s childhood with a specialty kit of legos. Embark on a family project of helping Dad build models of favorite movie props like the Death Star or Hogwarts castle.

HAVE AN OUTDOOR FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

07 10 11 13

COOK SOMETHING ADVENTUROUS

If some of Dad’s role models include Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay, consider thinking outside the box and create a meal with something you wouldn’t usually go for like bison burgers or grilled octopus tentacles. Tackling a complex recipe may seem challenging but the memories and the meal will be worth it.

If one of Dad’s favorite pastimes is binging the Star Wars saga over and over again, how about setting up a family movie night from your own backyard? Hang a white bed sheet and project a movie onto the screen via a projector. 34 HOW TO | LIFE + CULTURE

Signing Off

My high school aged son is reading The Alchemist as we go to press, so a quote by Paulo Coelho, seems appropriate and timely.  The June 2023 issue has been particularly poignant to create because it will be my last to oversee as Publisher.  When I started Cross Timbers Lifestyle over six years ago, the vision was simple - “Inspiring, Educating & Connecting Southern Denton County.”  Every story and partnership was viewed through this lens.  I am incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished together and cannot imagine life without the rich friendships that have developed these last years.  I am blessed beyond measure with a husband and family, who have supported me along the way as I pursued my dreams

even when it meant deadlines and commitments all over our lovely community.

Starting this publication is one of the proudest achievements in my life and while it’s hard to say goodbye in some ways – in other ways it’s simple.  Next month you will meet the delightful Rachael Fenton, who is taking over as Publisher.  She and I have become fast friends and I cannot wait to see where she takes us next. Her vision and passion for the community, non-profits, the arts and local businesses are incredible.  Thank you to this wonderful community for embracing me and this beautiful publication over the years.  I’ll be seeing you all around town!
