Highland Village Recognized as Seventh Safest

Chandler’s Kitchen & Bar is coming soon to Flower Mound. The new restaurant will be located in Parker Square. As of press time, Chandler’s menu had not been posted, but photos of steaks and schnitzel can be found on its social media pages. The restaurant will be opening in the former Yellow Rose Steakhouse location and is expected to open in July.

Jessica True is the new principal of Marcus Ninth Grade Campus. True previously served as assistant principal at Marcus High School. Jessica takes over for longtime Marcus 9 principal Chantell Upshaw, who recently was named LISD’s Chief of Middle Schools.

“I look forward to serving the great students, staff, families and community while continuing to build a love for learning for the students at Marcus 9,” Jessica says.

Rapid Med proudly helped sponsor the First Annual Bats & Badges baseball tournament benefitting Miracle League of North Texas. This local non-profit provides children with special needs the opportunity to experience the joy of baseball. On June 25 at Gerault Park, the FMPD Community Services Unit hosted a 9U baseball tournament with event proceeds benefitting the nonprofit.

Miracle League athletes joined the fun and put on an exhibition showcasing their skills.

BetteRx Safe Than Sorry is a new division of local non-profit WTFwinningthefight.org. The organization provides drug education, support, and resources to youth and families suffering from the disease of addiction. The "Better Safe Than Sorry” program emphasizes the importance of locking up prescription and over-the-counter medications. This is a key initiative because according to the National Institute on drug abuse, the highest abuse rate of prescription substances is found in those ages 18-25 at 14.4% with youth ages 12-17 at 4.9%.

DOG TRAINING TIPS ANNE O’NEILL, OWNER OF SPECIALTY PET TRAINING, OFFERS PRACTICAL PET ADVICE FOR Despite the old saying, it is indeed possible to teach an old dog new tricks, though it’s a bit more difficult to change their behaviors. But, according to Anne O’Neill, owner of Specialty Pet Training, all things are possible with positive reinforcement.

“Actually, you can teach an old dog any new skills, especially tricks,” Anne says. “I taught my Australian Cattle dog to flop on his side and ‘play dead’ at the age of 12. However, when it comes to behaviors, it can be a bit trickier since adult dogs adjust to change much more slowly compared to young puppies. But with some time, repetition and patience, you can definitely teach an old dog anything.”

This month, Anne offers some practical advice for training and interacting with both puppies and dogs.

1. Barking Barking is due to the emotional state of the dog and in most cases is because the dog is stressed. Yelling, punishing and scolding a barking dog actually makes things worse. It is much like yelling at your child for crying. It only causes more stress which causes more barking. Treat the reason why the dog is barking, and you will see it improve.

2. Socialization Socialization is imperative for puppies from the age of 6 weeks to at least 4 months. Waiting for them to get all their shots at 6 months severely impacts the dog’s ability to accept their world as an adult without fear. However, you can be safe and socialize your young puppy to guests in the home, grooming, leashes, noises, surfaces, etc. and not put your puppy in danger of catching parvo. Never try to socialize a puppy at a dog park, instead join a puppy class.

3. Holding your hand out for a stranger dog to sniff

Do not offer your hand to a dog you don’t know. This is the fastest way to get bit if the dog is fearful and aggressive. Don’t worry - he can smell you from 20 feet away so letting him sniff you isn’t necessary. Instead stand there and turn sideways, talk sweetly and allow the dog to come up to you. If he doesn’t then do not try to pet the dog. Let it be his choice.

4. Stress Signals Dogs display stress signals when they are feeling uncomfortable. The most important ones you should look for are slow or lowered body movement, turning/moving away and licking their lips. If a dog is doing this, they are starting to get stressed, and you should move them away from what is stressing them. Once you start watching and respecting your dog’s body language you will find your relationship will grow stronger.

5. Growling Never punish a growl. This is the dog literally telling you that what is happening is threatening. Even if you don’t agree – this is a warning that you should listen to, change your response and help the dog to not feel threatened. Punishment might make the dog stop growling, but it doesn’t change his opinion of the threat. Then you will end up with an unexpected reaction because the dog stops warning you.

6. Potty Training Expecting a dog to alert you that they need to go outside is one big mistake people make. Be proactive and take them out every hour, any time they get up from a nap and any time they are active. Puppy pads only teach the dog to use the bathroom in the house. Instead, be proactive and take the dog out when they squat or put them in the crate so they learn to ‘hold it’.

Punishment only makes them hide it from you.

7. Crate Training Some people think crate training is cruel. I relate it to putting your child in a play pen while you cook dinner. Not cruel at all. Imagine having to raise a baby and never being able to put them somewhere safe while you complete tasks. That is what a crate is – a safe place for your puppy to stay while you are at work, sleeping, cooking, etc. This is also where they learn to hold it and build bladder control. It is super important that the crate be large enough for the puppy to completely stretch out tip-to-tail. They grow when they sleep and forcing the dog to curl up in a small crate or with too much bedding can cause problems with growth.

8. Jumping up on guests One of the biggest issues with large breed dogs is jumping up on guests. The most important thing pet parents need to do is to put the dog on a leash before guests enter the home and keep him on the leash until he completely settles down. In many cases the jumping is a greeting, and after about 15 minutes the greeting is over, and the dog has moved on. Have treats out and ready any time the dog sits so he will want to repeat that behavior on his own. If you are consistent with this routine every single time a guest comes in the home – you’ll see results in no time.

9. Learning While dogs can learn certain things quickly, they cannot perform them in any scenario without some practice. Dogs learn the quickest from repetition and consistency. So, if you do something once, he learns just a little. If you do it every single time with the same scenario – the dog will learn quicker. So don’t give up – keep at it. Children go to school for 12 years – give the dog some time to learn too.

“Plan, plan, plan,” Cara reiterates.

“Planning ahead is like insurance on nutrition. When you have a plan, it is so much easier to implement good nutrition than when you don’t have a plan.”

After summer indulgences, many families are looking to clean up their meals.

But Cara says eating healthier can feel indulgent, as well.

“My favorite way to make healthy eating exciting is to have a core group of recipes that I use on a rotating basis, but then to also have a fun Pinterest board with all the things I’d like to try,” she says. “That way, when you’re ready for something new, you already have an idea of some recipes to choose from. If you like to look at physical cookbooks, then sit down with a sticky notepad and start marking up which recipes you want to try next!”

When it comes to packing easy and nutritious lunches, Cara encourages parents to think outside the (lunch) box.

“To make school mornings easier, I always made a monthly calendar of what would go in lunch boxes for my kids. That way, packing for school lunch was easier,” she says.

Cara encourages parents to include their children in the process.

“Have kids help by getting things ready the night before that can be packed up ahead of time,” she says. “Letting kids have input on what goes into their lunches helps to be sure it gets eaten.”

Most importantly, Cara advises keeping it simple. “Remember that good nutrition is simple. Things don’t have to be fancy.

A simple protein, fruit and veggie with a fun dip are enough to sustain nutritional needs for little ones.”

Cara’s blog The Nourished Body & Soul is a valuable resource for healthy and easy school season recipes. Most of her dishes are grain-free and all are gluten-free.

This month Cara offers some fun recipes that your family will want to include in its weekly rotation. And all make excellent lunch box additions, as well!

TRAIL MIX GRANOLA INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup raw cashews 1 cup raw pecan halves 1/2 cup raw pumpkin seeds 1/4 cup applesauce (no added sugar) 4 tablespoons maple syrup 2 tablespoons coconut sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips 1/ 2 cup raisins 1/2 cup mini marshmallows

CRUSTLESS PIZZA EGG BITES INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

8 eggs 6-8 ounces turkey pepperoni, chopped 1 large tomato, diced 1/2 cup coconut milk, unsweet 1 tablespoon butter or ghee, melted & cooled 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Optional: ½ cup grated mozzarella cheese spray oil

01 Place the cashews, pecans & pumpkin seeds in a medium-size bowl. Cover with warm water & soak for 2 hours.

01 Preheat the oven to 325.

02 Whisk all the eggs together in a medium-size bowl.

03 Remove the nuts from the water by pouring them into a fine colander. Give them a good shake to get as much water off as possible. (Just wipe the bowl from soaking the nuts dry because you will re-use the bowl in just a minute.)

03 Add the coconut milk, melted butter, apple cider vinegar, salt & pepper and whisk again.

04 Stir in the tomato and the chopped turkey pepperoni.

05 Using a 1/3 cup measuring scoop, fill each muffin well.

04 Place the nuts in a food processor and pulse until the nuts resemble the size of oats. This only takes a few pulses.

05 In the medium-size bowl mix together applesauce, maple syrup, coconut sugar, vanilla & salt. Then scoop the nut mixture out of the food processor into the bowl. Stir the nuts together with the applesauce mixture.

06 Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and pour the nut mixture onto it, spreading it out into a thin layer.

06 Bake 24-26 minutes or until the egg bites become firm in the middle. You can check these by sticking a toothpick or butter knife down into the middle of them to see if they are done.

07 If using cheese, sprinkle on top of each pizza egg bite right when they come out of the oven.

08 Once cooled, store in the fridge for up to seven days.

07 Bake 6 hours; then turn off the oven but leave the granola in the oven for 4 more hours.

08 Serve or store at room temperature for up to 14 days in a glass jar.

BBQ RANCH MEATBALLS INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 pounds ground beef 1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped 1/4 cup gluten-free flour 1 egg 1 tablespoon coconut aminos 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 tablespoon salt 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon dried dill 1/2 teaspoon dried chives 2 cups BBQ sauce, no sugar added 3 tablespoons water spray oil

DIRECTIONS 01 preheat oven to 425.

02 In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, onion, coconut aminos, tomato paste, egg, salt & seasonings.

03 Once the meat mixture is well mixed, add in the gluten-free flour and mix well again, making sure all the flour is mixed well into the meat mixture.

04 Use a large spoon to scoop out equal amounts of meat and roll into tight balls.

05 Spray a large 9x13 baking rimmed glass dish with cooking spray and place the meatballs in it.

06 Bake the meatballs for 15 minutes. While the meatballs are baking, combine the 2 cups of BBQ with the water.

07 Pour the sauce over the meatballs and then turn your oven to broil. Continue cooking meatballs with the sauce for another 2-3 minutes.

09 Remove from the oven and serve.

Dawn Wilson never imagined her family would open its home to an exchange student, but when she found out that host families were needed, she didn’t hesitate. Though they signed up to be hosts, the Wilsons and their exchange student grew to be a family – learning from each other along the way.

“There was a small paragraph from Anna’s profile. From just that paragraph, I thought Anna was a great young lady and would fit in with our family perfectly,” Dawn says. “My kids are older and more independent, so I thought this might be a good time to welcome Anna into our home.”

The Wilsons hosted 16-year-old Anna, from Finland, during the 2021-2022 school year. Because she was a late placement, Anna arrived after the third week of school. But Dawn said that didn’t phase her.

“Anna is amazing. She’s so mature. She was 16 when she arrived but seemed several years older. She’s kind, smart, funny, outgoing and so happy,” Dawn says.

Anna participated in track and field, choir and theater while attending Argyle High School. “She wanted to experience allthings-American-high-school, and she did,” Dawn says. “Her favorite thing was Friday Night Lights. She loved going to the football games. She was so excited to be here. It is something she wanted to do since she was in fourth grade.”

Dawn says Anna learned there are some similarities and several differences between life in Finland and life in America.

“School is different; politics are different; religion is different; and health insurance is different to name a few.”

The Wilsons also learned from Anna. “This was good for my kids to live with someone from another culture. To learn from Anna that there is more than one way of doing things. To witness Anna leave her family, her home, her school and her friends for the unknown and then to acclimate to our home and our culture so quickly and so well, is inspiring.

“It was an amazing experience to see Anna have such a great year and to be a part of that. To love her like our own daughter.

She will always be a part of our family,” Dawn says.

Cheryl Close of Flower Mound hosted an exchange student during the 2017-2018 school year, and, like Dawn, says their student also became a member of the family.

“My husband, Van, and I hosted Marco, who is from Bologna, Italy. It was such a wonderful year. We love him like our son, and we are now part of his extended family,” she says. “We hope to make a trip to Italy soon to see him and his mom, dad, grandparents and sister. They are wonderful people, and we can’t wait to see them and their beautiful country.”

Cheryl is a member of the Cross Timbers Rotary Club and is an ambassador for the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.

Cross Timbers Rotary has participated in the Youth Exchange Program since the club’s charter year, though the program paused during the pandemic.

Cheryl says District 5790 of Rotary International is hosting a small number of exchange students this coming school year and plans to expand to its normal number of exchange students eventually. Cross Timbers Rotary will be one of a few

clubs in District 5790 hosting a youth exchange student for this coming school year. It will be welcoming a student from Romania this month.

“When a club sponsors a youth exchange student, it is a chance for our club members to show a young person all about Texas and our country,” Cheryl says. “They learn what America is really like and return home with a much clearer picture of Americans.

In return, host families and club members get to know the young person and more about his/her country and life back home.”

Cheryl says Marco was a joy to host. “He took his schoolwork very seriously and studied regularly. He had been the captain of his soccer team in Italy, and they won the National Championship.

He was able to play soccer at Marcus High School, so I got to be a soccer mom for the first time!” Cheryl says proudly. “He made good friends with the boys on his team. He has such a great personality that everyone loved him.”

Cheryl says, “Marco had the perfect attitude for an exchange student. He was up for trying anything. He did not shy away from new experiences. He frequently asked questions because he wanted to learn as much about our state and country as possible. He loved Texas and soon became a Whataburger and Dr. Pepper fan. As you can probably tell, we love Marco and his family so much!”

While Marco was busy learning all about America, Cheryl says she and Van learned much from him. “For one thing, it’s fun to experience our country through the eyes of someone who has never been here. So we enjoyed taking him to places we had not been in years.

We have never had a boy, which was a different parenting experience, and we learned that boys can eat a lot! He taught us how to make tiramisu and one of his favorite pasta dishes.”

Both Dawn and Cheryl say hosting an exchange student was a completely worthwhile experience.

“I have encouraged lots of friends to consider hosting,” Cheryl says.

“It was a truly wonderful experience, and Marco and his family will always be part of our family. We would do it over again in a second.”

Cheryl offers the following advice to those interested in hosting an exchange student.

• Commit to making the exchange student part of the family – not a guest.

• Be prepared for an adjustment period. It can be difficult for a high school student to adjust to a world different from theirs.

• Exchange students need support, understanding and love.

Communication is key.

• Be prepared for a bit of homesickness during the holidays.

• Enjoy every minute because the year will fly by.

A STORY AND A STROLL FLOWER MOUND PUBLIC LIBRARY’S NEW STORYWALK IS A LITERARY EXPERIENCE

The Flower Mound Public Library has partnered with Flower Mound Parks and Recreation to combine two essential elements of childhood- the great outdoors and reading – through its new StoryWalk project in Heritage Park. Now families can read a book on display as they stroll and play. Heather Botelho, Flower Mound Public Library Youth Services Manager, tells us all about the project, which has been two years in the making.

TELL ME ABOUT THE LIBRARY’S NEW STORYWALK AT HERITAGE PARK. WHAT INSPIRED THE IDEA? “The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.”

We started talking about creating a StoryWalk when the Library was closed due to Covid-19 and being under construction as a way to reach the community when they couldn’t come into the building. The more that we researched, the more that we determined that we would need a grant so that we could have a long-lasting installation.

HOW DOES THE STORYWALK WORK?

Once a book is chosen and copies are purchased, the pages are cut apart and double-page spreads are placed onto posters in numbered sign holders. Families follow the signs to read the story. Each sign also includes story enhancements, such as suggested questions that parents can ask their children or ways to interact with the story, or early literacy tips. At the end of the StoryWalk is a sign with a QR code to a featured craft. Parents can either send us pictures of their child doing the craft to be shared on our social media, or they can bring their child’s craft to the Children’s Desk to be displayed in the Library.

WHAT STORIES WILL BE FEATURED? How Do Dinosaurs Go to School? by Jane Yolen currently is being featured. This summer we had stories that matched our Summer Reading Challenge theme, Oceans of Possibilities. Future books will be themed to match what might be happening during that month or to the season or town events.

WHO IS THE STORYWALK GEARED TOWARD? The StoryWalk is geared toward preschool and elementary students, though all ages may enjoy it!

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THE STORYWALK? We hope that families will see the StoryWalk as an activity they can do together in our beautiful park; that parents might learn a little about the importance of reading through our early literacy tips; and that they’ll visit the Library!

I UNDERSTAND THE LOCAL STORYWALK PROJECT WAS A PARTNERSHIP WITH PARKS AND RECREATION? Yes, the Parks department assisted with the grant application, determined the best location for the StoryWalk and coordinated the installation of the signs.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE FROM THE COMMUNITY? Everyone has given such positive feedback!

IN TODAY'S ELECTRONIC/GADGET-CENTERED ENVIRONMENT, STORYWALK IS SUCH A WONDERFUL WAY TO COMBINE READING AND NATURE. CAN YOU SPEAK TO THIS? We find that people in our community take advantage of whatever nice weather we get by being outdoors whenever they can, and we’re so lucky to have a lot of outdoor areas in Flower Mound for people to visit. We also find that our community tends to recognize how important reading is for kids, based on how many participants we have in our storytime classes and readers in our Summer Reading Challenge. We’re happy that we can encourage both with our StoryWalk.
