Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. For some this means a fabulous trip but for others it means taking it easy at home. “A Summer Mountain Adventure,” recounts my family’s trip to picturesque Steamboat Springs. Texans love Colorado, and Steamboat is just one of the many reasons why. “Summer Volunteer Activities” and “Poolside Page Turners” lay out a road map of things to do this summer that keeps our hearts and minds activated even during the “lazy days of summer.” “Refreshing Summer Cocktails” from some of our favorite places around town make any day feel like a vacation. And check out “Local Experiences” for a list of lakes and water activities nearby. Flower Mound's Lakeside community continues to grow and in “Lakeside Life,” we delve into what the next phase holds. This first-class development offers many amenities new to our area and it promises to be spectacular. Cloud 9 Salon & Spa Set to Start Construction on 15,000-square-foot Project Owner Kim Cloud announced that Cloud 9 Salon & Spa received unanimous approval from the Bartonville Planning & Zoning Commission and Town Council, clearing the way for the long delayed project to break ground in August on 407 in front of Marty B's. The nearly 15,000-square-foot two-story building will house the Cloud 9 Salon & Spa on the second floor with plans to incorporate three to four retail tenants on the first floor according to Cloud.

Highland Village Women's Club Awards Scholarship to Marcus Senior The Highland Village Women's Club awarded a scholarship to Kennedy Wise of Marcus High School during the LEF Awards ceremony. Highland Village Women's Club is a social and community service organization. The club promotes friendship, communication and cooperation among women in and around Highland Village. Fundraising activities allow for an annual scholarship to be awarded among other activities.

A SUMMER MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE

Many think of visiting Colorado only in the wintertime, when the slopes are lined with snow, and skiing is in full swing. But Colorado offers a wealth of beauty and activities during the summertime. Cross Timbers Lifestyle Publisher Jane Krzysiak and her family visited Steamboat Springs last July and fell in love.

WHAT LED YOU TO STEAMBOAT SPRINGS? We love Colorado and have been many times to different places. The kids like to ski but also enjoy fishing and hiking. My husband and I also often traveled to Colorado with friends when we were dating and in the early years of our marriage. For whatever reason we had never been to Steamboat, but knew it was family friendly.

WHAT WAS YOUR IMMEDIATE IMPRESSION OF THE TOWN? It’s a very quaint town, and even in the summer there is lots to do – people are on the move. We stayed at a friend’s place - One Steamboat Place - and it was on the slopes and just majestic! Such a joy to take in that breathtaking view over coffee or cocktails in the mornings and evenings. As well, the downtown area is simply picturesque and very walkable.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS IS KNOWN FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. WHAT DID YOU OBSERVE? Staying on the slopes afforded us a great opportunity to take in the majesty of the mountains. Those gorgeous mountains are definitely the pièce de resistance of the area. The rivers and lakes are also beautiful. You can literally pull over and any of these spots along the various rivers are straight off

a post card. There are also so many beautiful hiking trails. We spent a morning over at Fish Creek Falls which has this stunning enormous waterfall. Our boys hiked up and took some phenomenal photos.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES ABOUND IN STEAMBOAT SPRINGS. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES IN WHICH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TOOK PART? Unfortunately, while we were there several activities were closed for two reasons – some fires in the area and the rivers were lower due to below average snow fall that year. Still, we had a great time riding the chair lifts to the top of the mountain where we hiked and had a fabulous lunch. Mountain biking is very popular. You can put your bike on the chair lift and take them up to the top of the mountain! Try out the Howler Alpine slide for a 2400 feet thrilling experience. We enjoyed zip lining and also played golf at a nice public course – Haymaker. If you are lucky and have a friend who can get you on at Catamount Ranch & Club -they have a world-class Tom Weiskopf course, plus lake activities on the 530-acre private lake. Some frequent visitors of Steamboat indulge in a private membership to this iconic private club where you can also have a home to enjoy all four seasons. If you are looking for a western experience, you will love Saddleback Ranch! There are wagon dinners and a cattle drive to participate in. If you prefer to be more of an observer – check out the Steamboat Pro Rodeo. This is incredibly popular and happens every weekend during the summer starting end of June. This is not “just for tourists,” but it is a real pro circuit level rodeo. You will be amazed!

Water activities abound in this part of the country. We fished in some public waters on the Elk River and Casey’s Pond. Trout fishing the Yampa River and Lake Catamount are highlights of this area. There is also tubing down the Yampa – right through the town but be sure to make a reservation! You can also enjoy paddle boards and canoes, which can be rented at Pearl Lake.

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO VENTURE BEYOND STEAMBOAT SPRINGS? A day trip suggestion would be to drive into Wyoming and fish their “blue ribbon” trout waters as a special treat. Another very unique opportunity is a visit to Strawberry Hot Springs – it’s family friendly during the day and more couples friendly at night. You can enjoy the springs and a massage!

I UNDERSTAND SHOPPING IS FABULOUS IN STEAMBOAT. DID YOU DO ANY RETAIL THERAPY WHILE VISITING? IF SO, WHAT WERE SOME OF THE FUN TREASURES YOU FOUND? Steamboat Springs is a very, creative artsy town. Pine Moon Fine Art is a great place where many local artists may be at work while you are there. Ohana is very cool – clever t-shirt designs plus they carry locally made jewelry, leather goods, knit hats and kitchen goods.

FOR THE FOODIES, WHAT WAS THE FOOD LIKE IN STEAMBOAT SPRINGS? ANY MUST-VISIT RESTAURANTS? We enjoyed Mambo’s Italiano. The food was wonderful and the atmosphere – particularly sitting outside was terrific. Apres Burger Bistro was walking distance from where we stayed and was excellent for breakfast or lunch. They had this crazy good burger called The Gnarley Nutter that was an Angus burger with cheddar cheese, pecan smoked bacon, creamy peanut butter and carmelized onion jam. Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails is a fun option for a couple.

WHAT WAS THE WEATHER LIKE? Being there in July it was very nice compared to Texas heat. Averages temperatures are 82/44 for July but June is 76/37!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN VISITING STEAMBOAT SPRINGS? Make reservations early because some of the activities get booked up. Also, take comfortable shoes because you will likely be walking and hiking. Be aware that there is a huge renovation going on right now on the mountain, so some things are closed down around the base of the ski resort. This information is frequently updated and available so just be sure to check that out. Sounds like the improvements are going to be fantastic so keep that on your radar as well for a future visit. I know we hope to ski there soon when these improvements are complete.

Town Offers Myriad Ways to Help Others During the Break As the middle of summer vacation approaches, many families are looking for meaningful activities to do together. One of the most exclusive communities in Flower Mound is growing once again. Realty Capital Management, the master developer of Lakeside recently announced plans for a hotel and office building within Lakeside Village, a resort community situated on Lake Grapevine. “We owe the Town of Flower Mound a big thankyou for trusting our vision and facilitating our ability to develop a legacy project like this,” says Jimmy Archie, Managing Director with Realty Capital Management. “The Town had the foresight to see that the incredible lake views are an amenity that enhances the quality of life and produces significant tax revenue for generations to come.” The new Hotel Miramar will be an 11-story, Curio Collection Hotel by Hilton with 181 guest rooms and suites featuring balconies with lake views. Hotel amenities will include a resort-style rooftop pool and terrace, spa, restaurant, lounge, ice cream shop, water sports concierge, ballrooms and stateof-the-art fitness center. On the top three floors of the Mediterranean-style hotel will be 21 luxury residences with unobstructed views of Lake Grapevine. “Hotel Miramar is unlike any other hotel in Dallas-Fort Worth,” Jimmy says. “… Guests can stay in a beautiful hotel room with lake views, walk to lakefront restaurants, take a morning stroll on the Lakeside Boardwalk, mountain bike on the North Shore Trail, enjoy a concert in the amphitheater and attend a board meeting at the adjoining office building, 3301 Sunset.” 3301 Sunset Boulevard will be a 170,000-squarefoot, six-story Class AA office building connected to the hotel. “Office tenants that lease 3301 Sunset will have the benefit of working in an office surrounded by nature,” Jimmy says. “Beautiful lake views will make employees feel like they’re on vacation. A setting like this will encourage employees to want to return to the office and leave remote working as a concept of the past.” “The connectivity to Hotel Miramar is also a selling point, as firms will be able to host conferences and provide easy lodging options for their guests,” says Daryl Mullin with JLL, the leasing company for 3301 Sunset. Located on the second floor of 3301 Sunset will be Eden Roc, a private social club. The members-only club will offer fine dining, a sophisticated bar and lounge, yacht, poolside cabanas and sunset terraces overlooking the lake.

In addition, Terranea, a 207-unit, 16-story luxury apartment tower will begin construction this summer. Lakeside Village is in the final phase of the 165acre, $2 billion Lakeside mixed-use project that includes shops, offices, restaurants, offices and residences, including the 16-story Lakeside Tower, luxury villas and townhomes. Corey Van Trease, owner of Van Trease Constructors, residential builder for the Lakeside community, says he is proud to be a part of Lakeside’s booming success. “Being selected as the exclusive residential builder for the community is an honor that comes with tremendous responsibility, and we are excited to bring our three generations of experience in the luxury custom market to Lakeside Village. Our job is to help our owners put their fingerprint on the place where they will spend their most valued moments – their home!” he says. Corey’s firm is responsible for the Villas at Lakeside Tower, Mediterranean Villas at Lakeside Village and Northwood Townhomes located within the community. Nineteen homes are being constructed now. And, just last month, 36 additional lots were released. More than 40 hopeful homebuyers currently are on the wait list. Corey attributes Lakeside’s popularity to its uniqueness. “Lakeside is unique in so many ways in DFW. Being less than 10 minutes from DFW Airport, amazing sunset views overlooking 8,000 acres of Grapevine Lake, easy access to 20-plus miles of world-class mountain biking and jogging trails, all in a walkable community filled with unique shops and restaurants,” he says. Lakeside’s continued growth ensures its success and cultivates the “village” atmosphere, Corey says. “All one needs to do is come observe what happens on a Saturday morning in Lakeside. Beginning around 8 a.m., bicyclers, joggers, yoga practitioners, water sport enthusiasts, dog walkers and on and on descend upon Lakeside to take in all that it has to offer. It’s really a sight to see!”

AS I DREAM ABOUT WARMER TEMPS AND SUMMER NIGHTS, I KNEW I NEEDED A FEW MORE CHAIRS TO SET OUT IN THE GARDEN. These Adirondack Chairs are an easy project, and with just a few tools and wood from Home Depot, this is a project you can do in just a few hours. There are only a handful of things you will need to complete this project: a miter saw, drill and a kreg jig which you can all find at Home Depot, as well a few things you most likely have in your home workshop, which includes a tape measure and safety glasses.
