LIFESTYLE LETTER
Welcome, January and 2022! The start of a new year is always pregnant with opportunity and unchartered paths. The optimism, the goal setting, all the “feels” for a new beginning are in place. At Cross Timbers Lifestyle this month we are introducing a fresh cover look and revamping some of our monthly features so we can share even more events, photos and news around town. Since January is all about health and wellness, we have long been a fan of our cover girl, local nutritional guru, Cara Price, creator of The Nourished Body & Soul blog. Check out what Cara has to say about “Food as Medicine.” Looking for ways to stay fit and social? We have you covered in “Adult Recreational Sports,” where we spotlight some local leagues that provide fun and excellent exercise. In “Local Experiences” this month, Editor Stephanie Hasbrouck offers up local med spas and wellness treatments to help you achieve the look you want and establish a new health regime. In the “Cold Plunge” we check out a craze that is making its way across the country and wonder – is this something we want in our neck of the woods? And, speaking of “cold,” in “Winterize Your Pool” we ask our friends at Flower Mound Pool Care & Maintenance how we can help prepare our pools for extreme weather…just in case! Finally, we catch up with Kristen Howell and Amy Ferdinando with Children's Advocacy Center for North Texas in “Protecting, Educating and Advocating.” 2022 is a big year for CACNTX – they will be celebrating 25 years and creating a new auxiliary. Read up on how you can jump in and support the most vulnerable children in our community. Sounds like a perfect new year’s resolution, plus a game changer for you AND the lives you touch. Cheers to 2022 and our fabulous community!

PROTECTING, EDUCATING AND ADVOCATING THE CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY CENTER FOR NORTH TEXAS CELEBRATES A MILESTONE, CREATES NEW AUXILIARY
16
O UR TOWN | LOCAL SERVI CE S
This year, the Children’s Advocacy Center for North Texas will celebrate 25 years of protecting the most vulnerable members of our community. Since the CACNTX opened its doors in 1997, it has served more than 20,000 abused children by collaborating, educating and coordinating with local officials to make sure every child receives the justice and healing they deserve. The center partners with front-line responders in Denton and Wise counties in a unified approach to empower child abuse victims, their families and the community. We asked CACNTX Chief Executive Officer Kristen Howell and Director of Development Amy Ferdinando to tell us about the important work that CACNTX does in the community and how residents can contribute to the Advocacy Center’s future success.
TELL ME WHY YOU BELIEVE THE WORK OF THE CACNTX IS IMPORTANT AND NECESSARY. Amy: This work is important because child abuse may be the root of other problems we are fighting as a society. It is well known that victims of child abuse who do not receive intervention and help may have a harder time as adults, experiencing drug abuse, homelessness, mental illness and in general just not reach their full potential. If we can intervene and restore children at their core it can change the outcome of their entire lives and the lives of their children. Many of our clients suffer intergenerational abuse, but what if there was more help? HOW HAVE YOU SEEN CACNTX CHANGE THE LIVES OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES? Kristen: I have the privilege of watching many cases go to prosecution. Knowing what a child looks like the first time they walk in our door when they are ready to make an outcry of abuse – and then seeing them stand up in a court a few years later, well…this is one of the greatest turnarounds I could imagine witnessing. Strength, power and resilience are on display where once there was fear, uncertainty and isolation.
THE CACNTX WILL CELEBRATE ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2022. WHAT DOES THIS MILESTONE MEAN TO YOU AND THE ORGANIZATION? Kristen: For 25 years, this community has said to child victims of crime: We believe you, and we believe in you. I am in awe of this little organization and in awe of the way our community steps up every day to ensure that the littlest residents of Denton and Wise Counties are safer and healthier.
CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER
WHAT HAS BEEN THE COMMUNITY’S RESPONSE TO THE CACNTX? Kristen: Our community built this response – this IS the community’s response. We aren’t a governmental organization. We are the community saying that victims of crime will be taken care of. They deserve the best. They will not be forgotten and they will have their potential restored. It’s our promise and it is straight from the community. At the end of the day, I’m just a mom who is doing the right thing by a kid in need. So I hope our services look just like something I would expect for my own child.

Kristen Howell, Chief Executive Officer
I pray every day that we will see the eradication of child abuse in my lifetime. But until then, the Advocacy Center will be responding. Every single time to every single child victim of crime. TELL ME ABOUT THE NEW CACNTX AUXILIARY. Amy: We will have a kick off informational meeting on Feb. 10. The Auxiliary or CAST (Children’s Advocacy Support Team) will be in charge of our Family Assistance programs. They will help organize and coordinate our Back to School and Holiday program. And throughout the year there will be other opportunities to help the Center. Their mission is to support the Center and its mission of healing and justice for children. It is a great way to get involved and get a behind-the-curtain view of the Center.
Amy Ferdinando, Director of Development
HOW CAN LOCAL RESIDENTS GET INVOLVED WITH THE CACNTX? Amy: We offer many individual, group and corporate volunteer opportunities. Also, we host an educational session! Our most popular topic for the community is “Internet Safety for kids.” It is an amazing, compelling way to learn about how to communicate with your child and set boundaries about their online use. Visit our website for more details. WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF CACNTX? Kristen: I hope to meet the needs of families who are facing the biggest stressor one could imagine: the crime of abuse committed against their child. I never stop hoping that it won’t happen at all – that all the monsters who would hurt children would literally run from this county – that they would know we have zero tolerance for people who hurt kids. But until they all run, I want to hire the best people. I want our cities to hire the best detectives and our counties to hire the best prosecutors. I want every child who has had a crime committed against them to get best in class service. I want the impact of abuse to be minimal – part of a child’s story, but not the definition of that child. Cara Price, Creator of The Nourished Body and Soul, Touts the Paleo Lifestyle and its Healing Qualities ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE HASBROUCK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWN MICHELLE PHOTOGRAPHY
After living in constant pain for three years, Cara Price discovered food was one of the keys to healing. She began to follow the Paleo protocol by removing inflammatory foods from her diet, and in turn, improved her health and found her calling. “This way of eating drastically improved my health. Once I began eating Paleo, I started rewriting recipe favorites, from before I was sick, in a way that followed a Paleo prescriptive and started cooking them for my friends and family,” Cara says. “People began asking me for my recipes and that’s how my blog, The Nourished Body and Soul was born.” The Paleo lifestyle promotes eating grass-fed, pasture-raised meats, wild-caught seafood, healthy fats, vegetables, fruits
and treats made with natural sweeteners. Foods like grains, refined sugars, processed meats, legumes, soy, corn and dairy are avoided. “Choosing to use Paleo guidelines as my lifestyle for eating has given me so much energy,” Cara says. “Choosing to eat Paleo consistently takes a decision and a determination, but it’s not difficult.” Cara encourages individuals to start slowly, and soon it will become habit. Try Cara’s Creamy Garlic Salmon, Chicken Pomodoro and Fudgy No-Bake Brownies, and you’re sure to be hooked! Creamy Garlic Salmon INGREDIENTS • 4 - 6 ounce pieces of wild salmon • 4 tablespoons ghee, divided • 6 cloves garlic, minced • 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved • 1 - 5 ounce container baby spinach, chopped
• • • • • • •
1 cup light coconut milk 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast 1 1/4 teaspoons salt for the sauce 1 teaspoon herbs de Provence 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika freshly ground salt and pepper handful fresh basil, chiffonade cut
DIRECTIONS Generously salt and pepper the salmon filets with fresh ground salt and pepper. Make the sauce by pouring the coconut milk into a large mixing cup. Add in the nutritional yeast, salt, herbs de Provence and smoked paprika. Whisk vigorously and set aside. Heat a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add 3 tablespoons of ghee to the pan. Once it melts and is very hot, add the salmon cooking about 90 seconds - two minutes per side. Remove salmon to a plate and keep warm. Add in the remaining tablespoon of ghee and melt in the pan. Add the tomato halves and cook until the skin begins to blister - about one minute. Then add in the garlic and cook about 30 seconds. Add spinach to the pan and cook until mostly wilted, but still slightly crisp. Pour the sauce into the pan and simmer one minute. Then add the salmon back to the pan and cook on low until desired doneness is reached. Taste the sauce and adjust salt if necessary. Due to the varying acidity of tomatoes, the sauce may need a slight bit more salt. Garnish with fresh basil.

Chicken Pomodoro INGREDIENTS • 3 pounds chicken tenders, cut into bite-size pieces • 2 pints of grape tomatoes • 1 large shallot (or 2 small ones) • 6 cloves garlic, minced • 1 – 5 ounce container baby spinach • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/4 cup light coconut milk
• • • • • •
1/4 cup chicken broth 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon arrowroot flour 2 teaspoons pepper a big handful of chopped basil & rosemary
DIRECTIONS In a small bowl, combine the coconut milk and the chicken broth with the arrowroot flour. Mix it well and set aside. Place 1/4 cup olive oil in the bottom of a large skillet over medium heat. Place chicken pieces in skillet and sprinkle the Italian seasoning, salt and pepper over the chicken. Stir consistently for several minutes until all chicken pieces look mostly browned but not cooked all the way through. Use a slotted spoon to remove the chicken to a plate and keep warm; reserve all pan drippings. Add in the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil and place shallots and tomatoes in pan. Sauté several minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened and skins of tomatoes are slightly blistered. Turn heat to low, add in garlic and cook one more minute. Pour in the chicken broth mixture and stir to coat all the onions, tomatoes and garlic. It should become thick almost instantly. Place all the spinach and fresh herbs in a single layer over the tomatoes and onions; then add the chicken and any liquid that has accumulated from the chicken, on top. Do not mix it up. Leave it layered and cover to cook on low for 12-15 minutes. Uncover and mix it all together. Serve over spaghetti squash or with mashed sweet potatoes.

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 34
S ELF CA R E | FITNESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

Winterize Your Pool FLOWER MOUND POOL CARE & MAINTENANCE HELPS RESIDENTS PREPARE FOR EXTREME WEATHER
Last winter, swimming pools across Texas turned into ice skating rinks as a rare winter storm wreaked havoc on the state. Many homeowners were unprepared for the aftermath of costly repairs. This year, experts at Flower Mound Pool Care & Maintenance are helping residents prepare for the unlikely event of more extreme weather. “The key to protecting your pool equipment during the winter is to simply keep the water circulating. The water is far less likely to freeze and destroy your system,” says Brad Williams, owner and CEO of Flower Mound Pool Care & Maintenance. “Your pool should be equipped with a freeze protection mechanism. When the temperature falls below freezing, the system will turn on all of your pumps regardless of your programmed run times. If you notice it’s below freezing, and the pool isn’t running, it would be wise to contact a pool service provider to inspect your pool’s freeze protection system.” Many homes lost power last winter for a prolonged amount of time, which had devastating effects on their pool systems. Brad says, “If you totally lose power during an extreme weather situation, you will need to take immediate action to protect your equipment from damage. Your pumps, heaters and filters have removable drain plugs to give freezing water inside the equipment room to expand.” Perhaps the best way to be proactive in protecting your pool is to contact a professional to inspect the system before bad weather approaches. “Simply contact us and let us know that you would like to have one of our awesome repair technicians out to inspect your system’s freeze protection,” Brad says. Flower Mound Pool Care & Maintenance is a full-service repair and maintenance company. Services include routine pool cleaning and maintenance, equipment repairs and pool remodeling.
