THERE IS SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT GROWING A GARDEN AND UTILIZING ITS BOUNTY. Perhaps one of the most useful gardens to grow is an herb garden. For centuries, individuals have been growing and harvesting herbs for meals and medicine. Tiara Chapman, LLELA Nature Preserve Coordinator, shares some tips for growing and enjoying herbs.

“My container herb garden consists of four main staples based on what types of dishes I cook often: rosemary, basil, thyme and oregano,” Tiara says. “The times when I need it, I only need a pinch, so why not grow it?”

Tiara suggests following these steps for beginning an herb garden. The process does not require a big investment. Instead, start small and build on what you have.

The key ingredient? Olive oil! Yes, any bottle of olive oil from your kitchen works. Pour some in a smaller bottle and add several drops of your favorite essential oils.

Olive oil is super hydrating, feels great, and will make you question why you ever used lotion in the first place. Plus it's safe for your whole body. Just be mindful of the essential oils you choose. Some types—such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oils—cause a cooling effect and can feel uncomfortable if it gets on your face or other sensitive areas.

You probably know that vinegar is a great natural cleaner for most surfaces.
