IT’S THE SHORTEST MONTH OF THE YEAR, BUT THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING HERE IN SOUTHERN DENTON COUNTY. February is about roses, three-day weekends, things that sparkle and cold weather that teases the promise of a thaw. It’s the perfect time to let your own creative juices begin to flow. When thinking of ideas for our Arts + Makers issue, we were inspired by the talented local creatives who beautify our community with their work. Whether it’s regional theater performances, the LISD student arts scene or handmade goods from local artisans, we were inspired by the creative culture our community is bursting with. One of our favorite arts-related experiences is the phenomenal Lake Cities Ballet, where this month we share what it takes to bring a show such as the family-friendly Coppelia to life. Additionally, throughout the year one can take in the artistic endeavors of talented LISD students when they journey down the halls of the LISD Administration building. Keep in mind it’s time to gear up for LISD’s annual student art show at the Gallery of the MCL Grand, as well. Prepare to be swept away as though you are visiting the Chelsea Arts District when you simply hopped across Highway 35.

CREATING BEAUTIFUL THINGS FROM DISCARDED MATERIALS IS A WAY OF LIFE FOR NICOLE KRAUS. Her work is a reflection of her faith in God, whom she says has created something beautiful in her. Nicole, owner of Handmade and Reclaimed, makes rustic, modern home decor from reclaimed wood. She states on her website: “I love taking old, broken and unwanted things and breathing new life into them. I love it because that is exactly what my savior Jesus did for me.” Nicole says her business was born of necessity in 2015. “I had been a stay-at-home mom, but our family needed me to help out financially, and with a 7- and 3-year-old at home, I was having a hard time figuring out what that could be. One day, I was cleaning out my garage and realized I had a ton of old wood and paint, and I thought I could teach myself how to create some cute signs. If all else failed, I would just keep them for my own home.”

Nicole says the community has been extremely supportive of her blossoming business. “It has been a bit overwhelming—in a good way!” she says. “I have needed to recruit my family to help me when they can.”

Nicole creates signs, graphic T-shirts and many other home decor items. One of her favorite items she was commissioned to create was an 8-by-4-foot geometric art piece. She says her most popular items are her signs and wall art. “I sell a lot of scripture and song lyric signs, like ‘It is well with my soul’ and ‘Be still and know that I am God.’ I also sell a lot of the modern wall art pieces.” One thing is for sure: no two wooden pieces are the same, she says. “They are completely one-of-a-kind. The wood I work with has a history and character that makes it unlike another. The plot of the ballet centers around two young lovers, Swanilda and Franz, who encounter Dr. Coppelius and the life-size doll he has created that appears to be so real that the entire village believes it is the doctor’s daughter, Coppelia. Franz becomes infatuated with the beautiful Coppelia, who sits on her balcony reading each day. “The feisty Swanilda suspects that things are not as they appear and decides to investigate and teach Franz a Lesson,” Kelly says. The role of Swanilda will be played by Mikaela Seale, a senior at Hebron High School and member of LakeCities Ballet Theatre for five years. She has attended the summer programs at American Ballet Theatre and Ballet West. Guest dancers Nigel Burgoine and Steven Loch will join the LakeCities Ballet company in the performance. Nigel, a former principal dancer with the London Festival Ballet and current artistic director of the Ballet Theatre of Toledo, will play the role of Dr. Coppelius. Steven, a soloist with Pacific Northwest Ballet and an alumnus of LakeCities Ballet Theatre and Ballet Conservatory, will play the role of Franz. “Because it is a comedy, it is easy for the audience to follow the story, and you find yourself laughing often and anticipating what will happen next,” Kelly says. “It does return to a more traditional ballet feeling with beautiful dancing in the final act, which is the wedding of Franz and Swanilda.” Kelly says the intricate set, originally built in 1991 when LakeCities Ballet first presented the ballet and revamped by Art Director Tom

Rutherford, offers the perfect backdrop for Coppelia. “Tom has two Emmy Awards for his work with the television show Wishbone that was popular in the late ‘90s, and we are lucky to have him,” Kelly says. In addition, costume designers Carla Mowery and Nancy Loch have recreated costumes to perfectly suit the story. “They both design, construct and organize our beautiful costumes,” Kelly says. “Because tutus are so expensive, often they must take a tutu and totally redecorate it for different ballets.” And the dancers bring the story to life, Kelly says, with their artistry and talent. They take daily classes to maintain their strength and technique and rehearse three days per week for about seven to 10 hours, depending on their roles. “The dancers do work incredibly hard to bring this story to life,” Kelly says. “Dancers work hard to study the character so they are able to tell the story without words, but they must also do it while dancing with the technical demands of classical ballet. “The artistic and production staff and the Board of Directors of LakeCities Ballet Theatre work hard to give our dancers the sets, costumes and choreography they deserve to match their hard work and dedication,” Kelly says. “Coppelia will be a perfect example of dance, theater, sets, costumes and music coming together to create something special.” For more information about Coppelia and the LakeCities Ballet Theatre, visit LakeCitiesBallet.org. 30

THIS MONTH, CROSS TIMBERS LIFESTYLE CELEBRATES OUR MANY TALENTED STUDENT ARTISTS, WHOSE CREATIVITY IS TRULY INSPIRING. Artwork by students throughout the district can be found lining the front foyer of the Lewisville ISD Administrative Center in Lewisville. Two permanent displays in the Employee Services lobby include pieces from Marcus High School and Flower Mound High School. Members of the Lewisville ISD Fine Arts Department, who oversee the district’s fine arts programs, rotate among the schools throughout the year showcasing art from each one. Each showcase is exhibited for about a month. The exhibit is open for the public to view.
