SPLURGE-WORTHY & ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK
PHOTOGRAPHY ROBERT RAY PHOTOGRAPHY WHEN IT COMES TO ENJOYING A NICE GLASS OF WINE, THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS—BOTH EXPENSIVE AND MODERATELY PRICED. Dan Adams, owner of Grapes to Wine in Bartonville, shares with us his top preferences for white and red varieties—both splurge-worthy and budget-friendly. “It’s no longer written law that you must drink white wine with white foods or red wine with red meat,” he says. “You drink what you like.” As for white wines, Dan says chardonnay is a popular choice. He says domestic chardonnays vary each year. “Chardonnay right now in America tends to swing from year to year from oaky to non-oaky.” He recommends those who prefer a lighter taste try an un-oaked variety. Other good options for white wine enthusiasts include pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY DAN ADAMS, OWNER OF GRAPES TO WINE, SHARES HIS FAVORITE WINES FOR ALL OCCASIONS
Though there are several moderately priced options for red wines, Dan says individuals tend to splurge more on red wine. “It’s a personal perceived value,” he says. “People’s palates have really changed a lot to where they are willing to pay a little bit more for wine.” Dan says cabernet sauvignon, with its “big, bold flavors” is a popular choice. Other popular red varieties include pinot noir and Bordeaux, which are lighter and smoother. “We call it the entry-level red wine,” Dan says. Grapes to Wine has many options for tasting, including eight varieties on tap. For those who are unsure of which wine to try first, Dan says, “If you come in here and spend a little time talking to me, I will find a wine you absolutely love.” For more information about Grapes to Wine, visit GrapesToWine.net.

ONCE A MONTH, AMY KUSHNIR AND GARTH BLACKBURN OF ARGYLE BRING COMMUNITY MEMBERS TOGETHER TO ENJOY A MEAL, A STORY AND AN EXPERIENCE. In return, guests leave fuller, wiser and a bit more inspired. The couple hosts community pop-up dinners through their company, Uptown Farmhouse, which they launched two years ago. Garth, a professional chef, prepares each dinner using fresh Texas ingredients. Some of the dinners are served in the small, beautifully appointed “baby barn,” as Amy calls it, behind the couple’s home. Others are held at local venues—many outdoors, under the stars. “It is an experience, rather than a dinner,” Garth says, adding that the term “pop-up” means the dinners are open to all in the community who would like to attend. “We wanted to have a venue to gather over food—to create delicious food and also memories.” Participants dine at one large table, reminiscent of a Mad Hatter’s tea party (but much more sophisticated). “We always make one large table together—whether it’s for 25 or 50 people,” Amy says. “There may be a stranger sitting to your left, and you’ll be friends before you leave.” The couple, who formerly starred in the popular local Taste Texas cooking show, connected with farmers and ranchers throughout the state while filming. Now they feature products from those farmers and ranchers in their pop-up dinners. The generously portioned meals include five courses, beginning with appetizers and ending with a sweet treat. “Every evening ends with one of Garth’s signature adult milkshakes,” Amy says. “People look forward to that. They leave full and happy, and that’s how we like them. We want them to be very satisfied.” Guests also leave a bit wiser. With each of the courses, the couple gives an explanation of the food and how it is grown and prepared. Oftentimes, they invite a farmer, rancher or distiller, whose product is featured in the meal, to speak about the product. “There aren’t many places you can have a great meal and learn about the food,” Garth says. “We talk about what they are eating, how recently it was caught and harvested and give cooking tips.” But, Garth says, the dinners are not overly educational. “It’s more inspirational,” he says. “People are now so into food and where it comes from and where it’s prepared, but what they really want is good food and a story to go with it.” The couple hopes to inspire an even larger audience soon. They currently are working with a national television production company pursuing their own show on a popular television network. Because details still are being ironed out, Garth and Amy could not offer specifics, but they say they are optimistic and excited for the future of Uptown Farmhouse. In the meantime, the two will be featured on the Celebrity Chefs Stage at the State Fair of Texas at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 12. Their next pop-up dinner will be Oct. 27. Email Amy at amy@uptownfarmhouse.com for details and to reserve a seat. Visit UptownFarmhouse.com for more information about Uptown Farmhouse, recipes and design inspiration. establish the color scheme. In the Wilkens’ kitchen, the River White granite with its subtle gray marbling lent itself well to the white cabinetry, light gray backsplash and the walls, bathed in “Anew Gray” paint by Sherwin-Williams. To the left of the kitchen, a wall of stacked silver travertine surrounds a two-sided fireplace, which leads into the study, Bob’s favorite room. The use of travertine was inspired by the couple’s grand master bathroom, which was the first room Lucie designed for them. “When we moved from Iowa, we weren’t used to a big master bathroom,” Johnisue says, “so our house didn’t have one.” The couple decided to expand their master bathroom to better suit their needs. Johnisue fell in love with a bathtub carved entirely

out of travertine stone, which ultimately became the inspiration and focal point of the entire room—and the most difficult element in the entire house to install. Lucie says one of the back exterior walls of the home had to be removed in order to get the bathtub inside. Once inside, the 2,000-pound bathtub had to be rolled slowly, inch-by-inch, on wooden dowels into place. The bathtub has proven well worth the effort. It sits surrounded by stacked travertine walls. Strategic overhead lighting makes it seem more like a piece of art than a bathroom fixture. And Johnisue says it is as functional as it is beautiful. “I absolutely love it,” she says. “It’s the perfect size— perfect for soaking.” “The Wilkens’ home, which sits in a park-like setting, boasts of functionality, elegance and simplicity,” Lucie says. “It’s where life happens. It’s where family matters, and it’s where friends are always welcome.” For more information about Creative Elements and

LOCAL’S CHOICE
TO O L S
OF THE TRADE
"Another favorite of mine are a few good, large, non-stick skillets." Duane recommends always using high-heat rubber spatulas and tongs.
"A good electric knife sharpener keeps your edges super sharp. A dull knife is the worst tool to have in a kitchen and the most dangerous."
Duane is a "huge fan" of potato ricers. Once putting potatoes through the ricer, he recommends adding hot milk, butter and salt and gently stirring.

Trenton Owens was named to Forbes/SHOOK “America’s Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisors” List in 2017. Neither Merrill Lynch nor any of its affiliates or financial advisors provide legal, tax or accounting advice. You should consult your legal and/or tax advisors before making any financial decisions. Forbes/SHOOK “America’s Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisors” list was developed by SHOOK Research. Advisors considered for this ranking were born in 1980 or later with a minimum 4 years relevant experience; advisors have: built their own practices and lead their teams; joined teams and are viewed as future leadership; or a combination of both. Ranking algorithm is based on qualitative measures: telephone and in-person interviews, client retention, industry experience, credentials, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, such as: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criteria because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOKResearch, LLC, which does not receive compensation from the advisors or their firms in exchange for placement on a ranking.
