Let Food Be Thy Medicine...

Let Food Be Thy Medicine… And Thy Joy!

We’ve all had that "hangry" moment when we are not ourselves until a quick bite turns our frown upside-down. It’s an ancient idea: food is medicine. The Greek physician Hippocrates championed the link between good food and good health. Early Chinese medicine suggested that if a walnut is shaped like a brain, it must be good for your brain. Science now proves them right, linking walnuts to brain-boosting omega-3s and carrots (which resemble an eye when sliced) to vision-supporting beta-carotene.

In that spirit of nourishing the body, we dedicate our October issue to all things delicious.  We sent our specialized teams of food tasters out on a secret mission to find the best culinary treasures that Conroe has to offer.

One if by land: Team one was dispatched to discover Conroe’s downtown delicacies.

Two if by sea.  Team two searched the lakeside legends of Lake Conroe. The teams tasted, smelled and drank to bring you our top gastronomic recommendations.

This month is about celebrating the art of the meal. Take our cover photo—that stunning cappuccino isn't a stock image. It was a real, handcrafted work of art from Alfred at Amore Ristorante. While I interviewed his wonderful wife Vjosa, Alfred asked if Hannah (my photographer) and I wanted something to drink like an iced tea or cappuccino. I choose iced tea.  But Hannah chose cappuccino.  I was immediately filled with latte-envy. It was a perfect, frothy reminder that a meal can be a beautiful experience, crafted with love.

We’ve curated a menu of articles and a hitlist for every mood. We featured lakeside spots you can boat right up to, and downtown gems nestled amongst the historical buildings, even one that had moved from the lake a few months earlier. Finally, we went back in time to the Renaissance Festival for the joyfully medieval experience of a giant turkey leg and a glass of mead. This issue is stuffed with flavor and inspiration. We’ve set the table, and now we invite you to dig in and explore Conroe’s incredible food scene.  Did we get them all? Well, do you catch all the fish in the lake when you go fishing? No, but we found enough to keep your tastbuds buzzing for a long time.

If you have a suggestion for our next gastro-mission, let me know on my Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/conroecitylifestyle/

AMORE FINE DINING: Love, Legacy, AND LAKESIDE FLAVOR

Amore Fine Dining & Spirits on Lake Conroe, Dr. Alfred and Dr. Vjosa Limani live by one truth: food is an expression of love. Their restaurant pairs fine dining with heartfelt hospitality, where every guest is welcomed like family.

The couple’s journey reflects the American dream. Arriving in Texas in 2011 with their two children, Alfred and Vjosa worked tirelessly in construction, cleaning, and restaurants. For Alfred, a passion for cooking was in his blood. His father owned a restaurant for more than 50 years. From that heritage, Alfred learned early that true hospitality extends far beyond the plate.

In 2017, they partnered in Tony and Al’s Seafood Shack. Within six months they assumed full management and, by October, became sole owners. The restaurant was rebranded as Amore Bistro, a name that perfectly captured the resilience and devotion driving their work.

Romantic dining on Lake Conroe, served with love and community spirit.

A curated wine collection enhances dining and conversation at Amore.
Eclectic artwork and intimate seating create Amore’s vibrant dining atmosphere.

Community support proved vital. With Alfred in the kitchen and Vjosa managing operations, they worked side by side, often with help from extended family. When their landlord sold the property in 2020, the Limanis moved Amore to its current lakeside location. Opening during a pandemic was daunting, yet loyal guests followed. New patrons soon discovered them, drawn not only by the food but also by the serene backdrop of Lake Conroe.

Today, Amore Fine Dining & Spirits masters the art of accessible luxury. The menu highlights premium steaks, fresh seafood, and handmade pasta. A typical dinner averages $35 to $40, a price point the Limanis carefully maintain despite rising ingredient costs. “We want people to enjoy fine dining without ever leaving Conroe,” says Vjosa Limani.

Beyond the table, the Limanis are known for generosity and community spirit. They actively support the local veterans’ club, stay engaged in schools, and maintain strong ties to both Conroe and The Woodlands. Guests often describe their hospitality as authentic, friendly, and unforgettable, the defining qualities of a place where one arrives as a patron and leaves as a friend.

The future holds even more promise for the family. The Raven Italian Bar and Bistro in Huntsville, their newest venture, is scheduled to open in September 2025. Like Amore, it will carry forward their dedication to fine dining and heartfelt service.

For Alfred and Vjosa Limani, every step has been guided by heritage, hard work, and heart. At Amore, with Lake Conroe just outside the window, the table is always set for connection.

Lakeside Legacy:

At Amore Fine Dining & Spirits, guests discover more than a meal. Overlooking Lake Conroe, the Limanis pair steak, seafood, and pasta with authentic hospitality, where patrons arrive as customers and leave as family.

Handcrafted desserts topped with sauces and fruit finish every meal sweetly.

Harry’s

Culinary Journey

GUADALAHARRY’S BUILT ON GRIT AND GUMBO

Nestled in historic downtown Conroe at 219 Simonton St., GuadalaHARRY’s Bar & Grill is more than just a restaurant; it’s a vibrant reflection of its owner, Ron “Harry” Keyser. Ron, who goes by Harry, has a colorful past. He traded in his many fine suits for Panama hats, loud Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and neon sneakers, initially to playfully annoy his golf buddies. This evolution eventually led to his current “Parrot head” persona. A seasoned veteran of the restaurant industry, Harry fell in love with the business at 22, driven by a passion for connecting with people from all walks of life from rock stars to cops to ditch diggers.

Colorful downstairs dining space, filled with personality and charm.

FROM UNLIKELY BEGINNINGS TO DOWNTOWN GEM

Step inside GuadalaHARRY’s, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the Florida Keys or the Bahamas. The restaurant officially opened on May 25, 2020, near Lake Conroe, launching directly into the tumultuous waters of the COVID-19 pandemic. When that initial location began to physically deteriorate, Harry had to find a new home. His current downtown spot was once a notoriously “bad bar,” rumored to be unsafe unless armed. Harry poured significant investment into transforming it into the remarkable, Jimmy Buffett-approved oasis it is today.

AN ECLECTIC MENU WITH A STORY

What truly distinguishes Harry’s, beyond its improbable origin story, is its refreshingly eclectic menu. Harry, with a twinkle in his eye, explains that the menu is based on a fictional tale of him “going around the Gulf of Mexico and gathering up a bunch of recipes.” This playful narrative, while untrue, provides him with “a license to do just whatever we want.” This freedom is evident in the diverse offerings, which are a true reflection of Harry’s personal favorites. Customers can expect a delightfully extensive spread, with highlights including:

• Monday Steak Night: A 12 oz Ribeye special for $21.

• Shrimp Brochette: Six jumbo, bacon-wrapped shrimp stuffed with Monterey Jack cheese and jalapeño pepper, served on rice pilaf.

• Thursday’s Freshly Made Cheesecake: The #1 favorite, with a new flavor each week.

• Ceviche: Fresh salmon, tilapia, shrimp, onions, tomatoes, avocado, and pepperoncini.

• Other favorites: Alligator bites, Gumbo, Frito Pie, or Filet Mignon.

Every dish boasts a hint of an unusual flavor, making it unique. This “whole bit, all the stuff I like” approach ensures there’s something for everyone, a testament to Harry’s philosophy of offering what he genuinely enjoys.

"Wag the Dog"
Bloody Mary a guest favorite

DEDICATION, ENTERTAINMENT, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Harry’s dedication to his craft is further highlighted by the personal sacrifices he made in the early days. He slept on an air mattress downstairs, working relentlessly, snatching quick naps before returning to the dinner rush—a punishing routine he maintained for “14, 15 months” until the business found its footing.

GuadalaHARRY’s also offers a lively entertainment lineup:

• Tuesday: Open mic night

• Wednesday: Karaoke

• Saturday: Live music

For dog lovers, puppies are welcome on the patio! Additionally, you can reserve the upstairs area for private parties simply by purchasing a $500 gift card, so there’s no extra charge for the space itself.

In his spare time, Harry enjoys golfing and participating in remote control plane “dogfights” with his son. He also volunteers with the Lions Club’s community service efforts.

A CONROE SUCCESS STORY

From its improbable launch amidst a pandemic to the transformation of a rundown biker bar to its diverse menu curated by Harry’s personal tastes, GuadalaHARRY’s Bar & Grill is more than just a place to eat in Conroe. It’s a testament to the power of passion, adaptability, and perseverance. It slides in nicely as a tropical oasis, amidst the stoic downtown Conroe historic buildings across the street from the county courthouse.

Reserve Harry’s upstairs space for private parties.

KADE DEVILLIER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Kade Devillier, who serves as both the Artistic Director for Beyond Fringe and Chief Personnel Officer for the Texas Hair Team network, is redefining what it means to offer premier beauty services in a local setting. While the Texas Hair Team salons offer high-quality service with family-oriented pricing, Beyond Fringe is the network's flagship for a distinct luxury experience. "Our guests want luxury," Kade says. "But not the drive. Here, they get personalized artistry, premium products, and a space designed for intimate, high-end care."

While the salon’s luxury is evident in its aesthetics, it’s truly defined by a deep commitment to innovation.

"This system remembers your exact formula and calibrates it to perfection every time," Kade explains. "It reduces product waste and gives our stylists more time to focus on you, not the mixing bowl."

That focus is tangible. On the lively styling floor, bustling with creative energy, guests can enjoy complimentary refreshments. When it's time for a change of pace, the salon offers a tranquil alternative. Step into the serene, soundproof shampoo lounge-a glass-enclosed retreat designed for deep relaxation. "We teach from a place of mastery," Kade says. "That way, our guests benefit from the best techniques the moment they're available."

And while Beyond Fringe serves as the luxury flagship within the Texas Hair Team network, it operates with its own boutique energy - high touch, highly trained, and distinctly elevated.

Luxury is also found in the small acts of care that matter most. Kade recounts working with a client recovering from chemotherapy, using Topchic Zero, an ammonia-free color treatment from Goldwell, to help her reclaim her identity and confidence. "She looked in the mirror and saw herself again for the first time in months," he says. "That experience truly highlights why we do what we do. It’s not just about beauty - it’s about honoring our sense of self."

Lakeside Comfort, Cuisine and Community

Briskets, Boats and Bands: Conroe Lake House blends lakeside dining, live music, and family-friendly fun.

On the banks of Lake Conroe sits a restaurant that feels like a second home. Conroe Lake House blends comfort, cuisine, and community into one inviting destination, where families, friends, and even four-legged guests gather to enjoy lakeside living at its best. It is a space that celebrates community as much as food, drawing locals and visitors alike to its relaxed yet lively setting.

Step inside and you are met with a dining room designed for views. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the lake in every season, with sunlight bouncing off the water and casting a glow across every table. Outside, the shaded patio has become the heartbeat of the experience. Guests enjoy cool breezes from ceiling fans in the summer, then gather around fire pits and heaters as the weather turns crisp. With more than 20 boat docks, many visitors arrive by water, tying up for a meal and a moment of relaxation before heading back onto the lake.

The menu is hearty and approachable, anchored by the 14-hour house-smoked brisket. Served on platters, sandwiches, and even loaded nachos, it has quickly become the signature favorite. The brisket’s smoky aroma drifts across the patio, reminding diners that this is comfort food rooted in Texas tradition. Thursdays bring the popular seafood boil, a social dining experience meant for sharing, while seasonal crawfish draws crowds every spring. Families especially love Tuesdays, when kids eat free all day with the purchase of an adult entrée. Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., giving neighbors a reason to stop in for cocktails, appetizers, and conversation.

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Thursday seafood boil served dockside with stunning Lake Conroe views.

Entertainment is part of the atmosphere, making Conroe Lake House as much a music venue as a restaurant. Local musicians play live every Friday and Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m., creating the perfect soundtrack for a sunset meal. On Sundays, a DJ takes the stage at 2 p.m., adding energy to the lakeside patio for those who prefer an upbeat afternoon gathering. Sports fans are equally at home here, with 25 TVs broadcasting live games throughout the week, ensuring there is always something to watch and cheer for together.

Conroe Lake House is also designed with inclusivity in mind. Children gravitate to the outdoor playground while parents relax nearby, making it

easy for families to enjoy extended meals. Pets are welcomed with enthusiasm, thanks to a dedicated dog park and even a playful “puppy menu.” It is one of the few places on Lake Conroe where the entire family, including four-legged members, can enjoy a meal together.

The combination of food, fun, and lakeside charm has made Conroe Lake House a true community cornerstone. Guests come for the brisket, stay for the music, and return for the atmosphere that celebrates connection as much as cuisine.

As autumn settles over Conroe, the restaurant’s fire pits glow, laughter carries across the patio, and neighbors gather to share a drink, a story, or a plate of brisket nachos. Conroe Lake House is more than a restaurant. It is a gathering place where comfort meets community, and every visit feels like a celebration of lakeside living.

Resilience Starts With Unforced Energy

THE STORY OF ENERGY, RESILIENCE, AND THE FOOD THAT POWERS US

ARTICLE BY ANDIE MONET

Bonnie BarberMom & Entrepreneur on the go
Bonnie BarberWellness is critical to energy

When you meet Bonnie Barber, you immediately feel her presence. There’s a spark in her voice, a grounded strength in her eyes, and an undeniable energy that draws people in. It’s not the kind of energy that comes from pushing through exhaustion. It’s the deeper kind—the kind born of resilience, science, and a commitment to living well.

FROM BODYBUILDING TO BURNOUT

Bonnie’s story begins in the gym. As a competitive bodybuilder and later a gym owner, she learned firsthand the discipline of training and the importance of nutrition. But behind the competition stage, real life carried heavier weights. A failing marriage, the responsibilities of raising two children, and the grind of rebuilding from scratch eventually caught up to her.

“I knew what it felt like to wake up drained, foggy, and heavy,” Bonnie reflects. “On the outside, people thought I was strong. Inside, I was running on empty.”

The experience forced her to rethink everything she knew about fitness, wellness, and strength. It wasn’t just about lifting more or working harder. The real question became: How do I find energy that lasts?

SCIENCE MEETS SOUL

Her search led her beyond the gym and into neuroscience and nutrition. She discovered something most women never hear: a woman’s brain literally changes every month. Hormonal shifts impact memory, mood, and focus, creating natural highs and lows.

During the menstrual phase, energy dips as the brain diverts resources. Around ovulation, estrogen and testosterone bring clarity and drive. But in the luteal phase, progesterone often triggers fatigue, cravings, and brain fog.

“When I learned that,” Bonnie says, “it finally made sense. Women weren’t broken or lazy—we were trying to run on fuel that didn’t fit our biology.”

That’s when she found ketones, a clean energy source the body naturally produces. Unlike caffeine or sugar,

which create spikes and crashes, ketones give the brain steady fuel. “It wasn’t about pushing harder,” Bonnie explains. “It was about fueling smarter.”

THE BIRTH OF LET’S GO

From this discovery came Let’s Go, a liposomal ketone gel Bonnie developed not just as a supplement but as a philosophy. It was her answer to the question she’d asked herself in burnout: How do I keep going?

“I wanted women to experience the same clarity and strength I fought to find,” she says. “Not a temporary high, but a foundation for resilience.”

REDEFINING WELLNESS

Today, Bonnie’s mission goes far beyond bodybuilding or business. She advocates for women to redefine wellness—not as a measure of willpower, but as the harmony between brain, body, and energy.

“Wellness is how we show up in every role,” she says. “In the gym, in the office, with our families. When our energy is steady, we can be fully present.”

Bonnie’s philosophy resonates because it’s lived. She knows the heaviness of burnout and the lightness with the right energy sources.

WHY IT MATTERS

In a world filled with quick fixes and energy drinks, Bonnie offers something different. Her message isn’t about doing more—it’s about living better. As a mother of two teenage boys and on-the-go entrepreneur of several businesses, energy and wellness are a necessary part of her life.

“When women elevate,” she says with conviction, “the ripple effect is unstoppable. Stronger women mean stronger families, businesses, and communities.”

To follow Bonnie's social media on health and empowering women, you can find her podcast at  https://fitceoonthego.com/podcast  or see her Let's Go-BHB at https://letsgo-bhb.com

“Energy is the foundation of how we show up—as mothers, leaders, athletes, and women. When we fuel smarter, we rise stronger, clearer, and more fully ourselves.”
