Welcome to our Miracle City anniversary issue. As we begin to publish year two of Conroe City Lifestyle, I wish you and yours the happiest of holiday seasons! If you love big presents, this is the issue for you. This year, we pulled out all the stops on our gift guide, so let your imagination run wild as we show you the biggest items on our Christmas list. Whether you are dreaming about a new golf cart, ATV, or car, or perhaps it's exercise equipment, jewelry, a boat, or even a house, we've got some incredible options to show you. I've got to tell you, this story was a rough one, though (insert sarcastic face here). We had the privilege of spending a day with the Director of Christmas Joy himself, Jerry Czubinski, AKA the Blue Angel Santa Claus. Jerry is a consummate professional and an all-around great guy. When we shot our big layout for "Santa Approved" toys for all you big girls and boys, he had to be "on" all day. By that, I mean as we went from location to location, he was in costume and on duty. I'll let you in on a little Christmas secret. Whether it's October or December, everybody wants to talk to and take their picture with Santa Claus. Jerry was so gracious and kind to all of his fans and to us. Thank you, Jerry, for your ability to always smile and wave! From Isaac Conroe’s lumber town that burnt down in 1911 only to rise again to the oil strike of George Strake and the area’s recent population growth, Conroe has repeatedly been called a boom town and miracle city. As you drive by some of the oldest buildings downtown, it is easy to take their character and the history behind them for granted. Buildings, including the Montgomery County Courthouse, the Crighton Theater, and the old State Hotel, have witnessed a lot. In October 1881, Isaac Conroe purchased a tract of land, established a sawmill, and founded Conroe, Texas. It was officially incorporated as a city on February 24, 1904. Eventually, it became Montgomery County’s seat. One reason Conroe was given the nickname “Miracle City” was due to the explosion of economic growth caused by the discovery of rich oil fields where geologists insisted there were none. It was a miracle because as the rest of the United States tried to survive the Great Depression, Conroe boomed. Overnight, wildcatter George Strake became a multi-millionaire when his attempt to drill a water well became the “Carter No. 1” after it instead struck oil in 1931. It was a gusher and proved that Conroe was sitting on a small but commercially viable oil field. The jobs created were significant, ranging from drilling and exploration to refining and transportation. It provided employment opportunities for many residents who were struggling due to unemployment during the Great Depression. According to Montgomery County Historical Commission Chairman Larry Foerster, the increased tax revenue

from the Conroe oil industry contributed substantial income to the City of Conroe and Montgomery County to improve infrastructure, build schools, and invest in public services. The courthouse, a bank, the hotel, Conroe schools, and retail stores were all built from the money coming in from the oil business. In the early 1930s, this was considered a miracle. “I’m not sure anyone knows exactly where the name “Miracle City” was derived. Some believe it was in response to the Fire of 1911, where downtown was rebuilt within a year. Others would say that it was named after the Conroe oil boom,” Foerster said. George Strake believed God guided him to Conroe. A devout Catholic, he was attending mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church when one of Strake’s roughnecks came and told him they had struck oil, according to Conroe Mayor Jody Czajkoski, who read a book about Strake, The Fisherman’s Tomb by John O’Neill. Other successful wells followed, making the Conroe oilfield the third-largest in the United States. Strake’s discovery also proved that Cockfield sand was an oil-producing formation and opened wildcatting in a 50-mile-wide strip that was 500 miles long, from Texas into Louisiana and Mississippi. Strake’s oil operations eventually spread across West Texas into New Mexico, Oklahoma, the southern states, and as far north as Michigan and Nebraska. His oil wealth was estimated to be between $100 million and $200 million. Due to this faith, Strake became a renowned philanthropist who donated much of his wealth to causes such as educational institutions, civic organizations, and charities. He served on the national executive board of the Boy Scouts and donated land for Camp Strake. The several thousand acres where the Grand Central Park shopping and housing development now stands was once the third largest scout camp in the United States. His positive influence touched lives across the community, state, and world. His work was even recognized with two Papal Honors.

“Miracle City is where the Texas Wildcatter entrepreneurial spirit meerts innovation and Southern charm,” said Jody Czajkoski, Mayor of Conroe. With Conroe being one of the fastest-growing cities within one of the fastest-growing counties, the future is still bright here. People are moving to Montgomery County for many different reasons: a strong school system, Lake Conroe, the natural resources of the Sam Houston National Forest, and the overall quality of life. When you stroll through downtown, little seems artificially manufactured. It has character. It stays true to its history without seeming ‘old’ or decaying. It is vibrant and alive without being congested or overcrowded. Today, the Miracle City has proven that anything is possible, according to the Conroe Lake Conroe Chamber Director of Marketing/Communications, Steve Scheffler. “When many other parts of the country and even the state have experienced tough economic times, Conroe has found ways to insulate itself from these downturns,” said Scheffler. “They are people who saw opportunities with the land and made the most of it. I would attribute that to a solid work ethic rather than a miracle.” Families that have called Conroe home for decades say the city is resilient and proactive in its economic development endeavors, and feel that the leaders in the community have a huge amount of respect for its past while embracing the future. As a tribute to the sustainable businesses and people of the area, the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating its 90th Anniversary in 2024, making it the oldest Chamber in the County. The Chamber has many important traditions ranging from the Montgomery County Fair and Rodeo, the

development of Lake Conroe and the Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport, Leadership Montgomery County, and Candy Cane Park, with annual events the community looks forward to, such as Lobsterfest. Businesses and residents are committed to preserving and promoting the history.

A chill goes up my spine at the mere thought of colder weather. If this sounds like you, then let me introduce you to your black sand oasis. More specifically, the country of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a mountainous place full of rainforests with hidden secrets and furry friends among the trees. I was lucky enough to travel to this gorgeous country during the off-season this past July. However, the best time to travel to Costa Rica is now, in winter, when the temperature there rises. December is the perfect time to acquaint yourself with this stunning country. Unfortunately, December also happens to be one of the busiest seasons for air travel, with about 75 million people traveling by air for the holidays. Last year, 1.6 million of them went through George Bush International. So, do some preventative planning. “I would always recommend allowing extra time at the airport during the holidays, especially Christmas!” says Katie Hernandez, a Houstonbased travel agent with Happy Day Getaways. She recommends arriving at IAH early and allowing plenty of

time before your flight boards. She also had a few extra tips to help make the journey as smooth as possible. “To help prevent lost or stolen baggage, it is ideal to purchase Apple air tags (or equivalent) so you can easily track your baggage,” says Hernandez. Our stay was central to a city in the Guanacaste Province on the Pacific side of the country: Playa Hermosa. There are hundreds of hotels and rentals in the country, including the VRBO home we stayed at. Like Katie, many travel agents agree that renting a car in Costa Rica will likely complicate your trip. “The roads can be in rough conditions, and it can be tricky to navigate through the rural areas. For local city transportation and traveling across the country, Costa Rica has a good bus system that is affordable and reliable.” says Hernandez. “Shuttle buses are often available to transfer guests from a hotel to a tourist attraction. Additionally, when you book a tour in Costa Rica, transportation may be included in the itinerary.” Since we had a big group, we hired a driver for the week. CONTINUED >

Our trip was filled with as much activity as we could jam into eight short days. Traveling by van, we started the week by hiking to view one of Costa Rica’s most popular marvels - Rio Celeste and its enchanting turquoise blue waterfall. The Celeste River is located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park and is the stunning reward of an approximate mile-long hike. We took an amazing nature detour at Sloth’s Ecological Farm on our way back from the falls. The Farm is a protected area of the local rainforest, which is home to countless animals and plants that the staff were able to educate us on - as well as spot sloth friends for us! And that was all on day one! The following week was filled with an ATV tour of black sand beaches, full of mud and thrills, and an absolutely exhausting day of zip-lining, horseback riding, and river rafting at Canon De La Vieja Lodge. We then relaxed at the Rio Negro Hot Springs with a well-deserved decompressing volcanic mud bath! Between sloth sightings and adventuring, we unwound each day with pool time, drinks, and fantastic food at countless restaurants. Nothing is more satisfying than a bustling day, a full stomach, and a gorgeous sunset that even the best cameras cannot capture. I can honestly say that the people of Costa Rica were so welcoming, friendly, and kind that you can’t help but find yourself smiling at any given moment. If that isn’t the best prescription for the winter blues that money can buy, I’m not sure what is.

Two friends went from making the faces of celebrities beautiful to making beautiful baked treats for the residents of Conroe all while forming a business, Miracle City Bakery. Meet Matthew Vanleeuwen and Yolanda Mata (she goes by Yoliglo) of Miracle City Bakery.

While their first offerings were created around the coffee shop, the bakery is now expanding its horizons. Since the beginning, it has been just the two of them and their four hands creating all the baked goods, but growth means they’ll be adding to their team in the near future. Recently, they have been out at both the Conroe and New Caney Farmer’s Markets, where happy customers drive for miles to get their hands on some of their most popular items like French Pastry Pop Tarts and Pecan Sandies. Soon, you’ll be able to find them in their own commercial kitchen space and storefront. In the meantime, come by downtown Conroe on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM or New Caney every other Sunday to see them. You can also shoot them a DM on Instagram and place an order directly. So, what do Matthew and Yoliglo like best about their new Texas home? Matthew says, “The spirit of the holidays is really alive in Texas and in Conroe.” The enthusiasm makes it fun to bake items centered around those events, like the beautiful, heart-shaped pop-tarts Miracle City Bakery created for Valentine’s Day. Another holiday favorite is the Christmas Toffee Bark (made with chocolate, pecans, and toffee). It is a delicious Christmas treat! As for baking, Matthew says, “I just kind of caught the bug,” and Conroe should be glad he did. Matthew first learned how to do makeup while he was busy getting a degree in advertising. The coed dorm he lived in provided an abundance of faces for practice. Once graduated, he moved to DC and found himself doing a little advertising and a whole lot of makeup. This led to an eventual move to New York City, where he did makeup for publicists and editors, and eventually Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Lopez. Work exploded for him in Los Angeles, and he worked with Lopez for seven years. Through makeup gigs, Matthew met Yoliglo, who was doing facials for big names in Hollywood. The two became best friends and spent a lot of time together. A year before they made the move to Texas, Matthew and Yoliglo even ended up in the same apartment complex and were at each other’s houses daily. After COVID hit, the two found themselves ready for a change, desiring a quieter and simpler lifestyle. Yoliglo’s family lives in Conroe, so they decided to move here. They loaded up all their belongings, plus two cats, and moved to Texas together. Once in our Miracle City, Matthew said he didn’t have much to do, so he “was baking like a crazy person.” As a result of giving his creations away to friends and connecting with others at the Farmer’s Market in downtown Conroe, Matthew was asked to be the baker at the former MoCo Food Hall. And Viola, Miracle City Bakery was born. If you ever stopped by the coffee shop at MoCo Food Hall, all the yummy treats in the cake stands were courtesy of Miracle City Bakery. While running a bakery business might have been a new experience, Matthew has been baking for over 15 years and has many tricks up his sleeve. “I have a crust obsession. Anything that has a crust- I’m in,” he says. That includes pies, lemon bars, and craft sourdough bread.

Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. According to Starley, when serving a large group, it is important to take different dietary needs into consideration. Not only are charcuterie boards, beautiful and delicious, but they are also the best option for parties because there is something for everyone; keto, vegan, gluten-free, and other needs can all be accommodated with cured meat and cheeses, pickles, and olives. Make a festive holiday cocktail in a large batch before the event starts to make serving simple.
