Through the years the theme of our June issue has always been “Men.” This month we have chosen to lead with a feature on a local nonprofit that supports both men and women, For The Troops. If you are a regular reader of Conejo Valley City Lifestyle you are familiar with who they are and the purpose of their mission. This issue highlights their latest fundraising event. They honored Vietnam veterans and raised donations to support the men and women currently serving in our armed forces.
For The Troops is an all-volunteer run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing members of the American military with “We Care” packages containing basic necessities, goodies, games and—most of all—a show of support.
Since its inception in 2005, For The Troops has substantially grown in volunteers and donors and has distributed more than 250,000 packages year-round to American troops who risk their lives overseas every day—far away from the comforts of home.
The men and women in our armed forces—Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines— are deployed throughout the world and particularly in the Middle East. They are presently risking their lives under what are often miserable and dangerous conditions. Supporting them is not at all about agreeing or disagreeing with whether they should be there or not be there. As an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam era, I am very familiar with that kind of debate. For The Troops Tees Up for Heroes Abroad

Mark your calendar for the 13th annual For The Troops Heroes Golf Tournament taking place September 21 at Moorpark Country Club.
The full day of golfing and fellowship with active duty servicemembers helps support the care packages sent to military personnel throughout the world, notes Golf Tournament Director and For The Troops board member Jenna Venarde.
“We’re asking the public to sponsor active duty servicemembers to play in the tournament,” shares Paula Cornell, founder and President of For The Troops, an all-volunteer run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that brightens American military members’ days with ‘We Care’ packages full of basic necessities and comfort items.
Golfers can participate in the 144-person tournament and/or sponsor an active duty servicemember for $195 to help sustain For The Troops’ mission of sending more care packages, while enjoying a day on the course. Current Medal of Honor sponsors include Logix Federal Credit Union and Kroger.
“Logix has donated over half a million dollars; they’ve been an amazing sponsor! They are our number 1 supporter,” says Paula, noting that event proceeds will help pay the postage for the more than 1,300 care packages that cost about $20,000 for postage each month to send.
Additional ways to support For The Troops include making monetary donations online at ForTheTroops.org , shipping items directly to the nonprofit via Amazon or mailing a check to For The Troops (PO Box 12, Simi Valley, CA 93062).
“As we operate out of a donated storefront in Simi Valley, we’re not using donations to pay salaries or rent—it’s all going to the care packages,” says Paula.
As well as donating money and supplies, people can write letters of appreciation to our servicemembers abroad.
“The troops’ number 1 request are for children’s letters,” says Paula, noting the letter-writing guidelines can be found online at ForTheTroops.org
Paula started For The Troops over 21 years ago after learning about her husband’s experiences in Vietnam.
All over the world, wherever we have deployed troops, we’ve done this for over 21 years.
“All the hardships that my husband and other servicemembers went through when they were deployed motivated me to start For The Troops,” says Paula, adding, “We always have troops deployed, all over the world—it’s not a political issue; it doesn’t matter who the president is. It’ll never stop, we will always have troops deployed,” so supporting our troops is a great way to ease some of their burden.
“They’re away from their families and loved ones for holidays and special occasions; they sacrifice so much for us,” says Paula.

The longstanding tradition of celebrating Montecito Bank & Trust’s (MB&T) anniversary by honoring local nonprofits selected by the bank’s more than 260 associates continued last March when more than 110 attendees gathered for a reception in the bank’s historic downtown branch. The bank’s late founder, Michael Towbes, first started the Anniversary Grants program in 1993 to honor Montecito Bank & Trust’s anniversary by giving back to the community. He wanted bank associates to have a voice in the direction of the bank’s corporate giving and to celebrate the exceptional volunteer service they provide to Central Coast communities.
The annual program is a source of pride among bank associates, as they campaign, rally and vote for the organizations that make an impact on their lives and communities. In addition to receiving a $3,000 check, each Anniversary Grant recipient also received a 1-minute locally produced promotional video showcasing the organization’s extraordinary work and the bank provides additional promotion of each organization in the branches and on social media throughout the year.
Chairman and CEO Janet Garufis welcomed the community-minded audience commenting that the evening’s event “provides the opportunity to celebrate where we are today, remember what has brought us here and recognize the good work that is happening across our communities everyday thanks to dedicated nonprofit organizations like those here this evening.”

After MB&T associates introduced each organization, Garufis smiled as she highlighted that “there seems to be a trend each year of furry friends, helping improve the health and well-being of individuals and nurturing babies and kids!”
As the celebration drew to a close, Garufis thanked the deserving organizations.
“There will be many more of these anniversaries and celebrations. On behalf of our associates and our Board of Directors, thank you for joining us in our commitment to make the communities we serve better places to live and work. We know that we would not be able to do what we do without each of you and the inspiring work you do!”
The Jerry Parent Anniversary Grants Legacy Award was added to the program in 2021 to honor the decades-long selfless community contributions of long-time Board Director Jerry Parent. Presented to an organization that makes a significant and sustainable impact on a local community, the awarded organization is nominated by a bank associate and selected by a committee with the input of Parent. The 7th recipient of the Legacy Award is Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, whose mission is to provide compassionate, affordable and responsive healthcare to all. Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics also received a $3,000 grant and a promotional video. They will be featured on a commemorative plaque in the downtown branch.

THE Wonders OF FATHERHOOD

There are many, many wonderful things about being a dad. The fact that we have a special day to celebrate the man who was most likely your greatest male influence is a plus. With all that is going on in the world and with most families, we can sometimes temporarily forget the good parts about fatherhood, so I thought I’d give you some reminders.
• Feeling the love. Perhaps nothing is more heartwarming than having your children curled up in your arms or even just sitting next to you, and all of you allowing yourselves to feel each other’s love. This is not something that everyone does, but I have to say that it is an amazing experience to just soak up the loving vibes from your kids, stepchildren or those you have adopted in some way. That feeling can keep your mood elevated for weeks on end.
• Seeing them grow. As our children mature, even though it may not be as quickly as we would like sometimes, it fills us with a unique type of pride.
Knowing that you are responsible for this little person who’s developing into a loving and kind adult, who may do great things for the world, is a very special feeling. No matter how your child is doing in school,
and even if there are some behavioral problems, it is never too late to help your child develop into a contributing member of society. All it takes is your time and attention. Also know that no matter how much energy you put into your kids, it will come back to you in positive ways.
• Enjoying the amusement. Nothing cracks me up more than watching kids be kids. Some very little ones show no fear, and you find yourself rescuing them from the tops of tables or looking for them in the forts they built with your new sheets. Others may shyly share with you their artwork or other things they made for you. When your child hands you a picture that says, “Happy Father’s Day,” even if you can’t figure out what’s in the picture, it becomes the most precious gift in the world. The creativity and playfulness of your children will help to keep you young when you get involved with it.
• Knowing you’ve contributed. As your child turns into a functioning adult, and at each step along the way, you need to know that just being a loving father has helped him or her to grow appropriately. You don’t need to be a great parent. You just need to be a loving one and, of course, to set good boundaries (which kids actually like because it makes them feel safe). Feeling deep inside yourself that you helped raise this person to become someone you respect (and who has self-respect) is empowering for you and your child. Family is more important to many of us than it has ever been before, which is a very good thing. Honor your father and enjoy him, he won’t be around forever.

Senior Concerns’ Love Run Returns:
A Community Tradition With Heart
On a bright June morning in the Conejo Valley, something special happens. Neighbors gather, families lace up their shoes and a shared sense of purpose fills the air. It’s not just a race—it’s a tradition rooted in compassion.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Senior Concerns’ 32nd Annual Love Run, presented by Logix Federal Credit Union, returns to Westlake Village, inviting the community to come together in support of a cause that touches thousands of local lives.
At its heart, the Love Run benefits Senior Concerns’ Meals On Wheels program—an essential service that delivers more than just food. Each year, the program provides over 70,000 nutritious meals to more than 450 homebound older adults across Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake Village, Oak Park and Agoura Hills. But beyond the meals, it offers something equally important: a daily check-in, a moment of connection and reassurance that someone cares.

The Love Run has become one of the region’s most anticipated community events, drawing more than 2,500 participants and hundreds of spectators each year. A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

There was a time when I was their hero.
My boys used to look at me like I had all the answers, like I was strong enough, brave enough and capable of anything. I didn’t have to be perfect. I just had to show up. And in their eyes, that was everything.
I remember the little moments: holding their hands, guiding them, teaching them how to move through the world. Tying shoes, answering endless questions, being the one they ran to when something went wrong. They trusted me completely. They believed in me without question. I made sure they were doing well in school and staying on the right path.
And then something beautiful happened. They grew.
Not all at once, but slowly, steadily, right in front of me. Their voices changed, their confidence grew and their independence began to take shape. And somewhere along the way, the roles didn’t exactly reverse, but they evolved.
I started to see their strength. Their character. The way they carry themselves, treat others and face challenges. I began to notice the values we talked about showing up in their lives. I always taught them about integrity and doing the right thing, even when no one is looking other than yourself and God.
And now…I look at them with that same admiration they once had for me.
Now, they’re my heroes. Not because they’re perfect, but because of who they’re becoming. Because I see their hearts, their resilience, their integrity. Because they show up, even when life isn’t easy.
Being a parent, especially raising boys into men, is one of life’s greatest privileges. You pour into them for years, hoping something sticks…and one day you realize it did.
They don’t just need you anymore, which, as a mom, can still be hard. They inspire you. And that might be the most rewarding part of all. To watch your children grow into people you respect, admire and are proud to stand beside not just as a parent, but as a human being.
I was their hero once. And now, they’re mine.
