They and their fellow educators help prepare the young people who represent the future of our nation. As parents, we entrust teachers, administrators and schools, both public and private, with our kids. We expect our kids to learn math, English, science, history, the arts and very importantly how to behave in the microcosm example of our greater society that the school represents. That’s a big job. Frankly, one that is often undervalued as a profession, undervalued in reasonable compensation and sometimes not respected when we consider what is asked of them. Given the fact that I was a classic underachiever throughout my 16 years of formal education, it is kind of ironic that I have been close to educators and higher education most of my life. My daughter and son-in-law are college professors and my ex-wife taught high school in Irvine until she retired. There are master's and PhDs scattered around the family, which includes

Frankly, even though we really strained to cover the cost of all that education (scholarships, grants and loans helped), I would have to say my kids were privileged. We and our readers live in the kind of affluent communities that make the opportunity available. However, as a local community and in a larger sense, as a country, we should always strive to make the money and resources also within reach to young people who grow up in very diverse and

R e v e r s e Ag i n g Ey e s w i t h C u t t i n g - E d g e T e c h n o lo gy ARTICLE MORGAN MONDELLO | PHOTOGRAPHY PAIGE MORRISON

ON THE FIRST DAY OF MY FAMILY’S ANNUAL SUMMER VACATION TO HAWAII, MY MOM LOST ONE OF HER CONTACTS WHILE SWIMMING. As she has astigmatism and hyperopia, my mom cannot see far and middle distances, and what she can see is blurry and causes eyestrain. She didn’t bring her glasses with her on the trip, as she didn’t think she would need them, and her shipped glasses ended up getting lost in the mail. Sadly, my mom had to spend the rest of our vacation with extremely blurred vision in one eye, which then caused headaches. I sympathized with her because it really affected her ability to have a fun experience on this trip. She wasn’t able to snorkel, hike or kayak with the rest of the family. Hawaii is a place you want to be able to see with clear vision. It is not a place you want to be hassling with contacts, glasses or blurry vision. With its vast blue oceans, lofty palm trees and stunning mountain ranges, this vacation destination is worth seeing clearly. Guess when her glasses decided to turn up? On the very last day of our trip, the glasses my brother had shipped finally arrived, along with a newspaper article he’d included about a procedure called PIE, which sounded like it could liberate mom from glasses, contacts, dryness and her other eye-related miseries. There is so much beauty to be seen in this world, and we all deserve to experience it to its full potential. So, the first thing we did post-trip was book an appointment with the pioneering eye surgeon, Dr. Rajesh Khanna, of Khanna Vision Institute in Thousand Oaks. FIRST VISIT During the first visit, the techs performed a battery of tests using futuristic-looking machines. The results appeared on a screen, which Dr. Khanna reviewed. He listened to my mom describe her vision problems and then asked her what she wanted to achieve. He began to build a visualization for her, taking notes and measuring the distance from her eyes that she held her iPhone and her reading distance. The next step involved show and tell. Dr. Khanna’s assistant showed us the various implants available. THE PIE PROCEDURE The foundation for a successful procedure starts with thoroughly educating the candidate and understanding their desired outcome. The actual procedure takes only about 10 minutes. Patients can elect to be placed in a twilight state to overcome anxiety and keep pain at bay. Special drops are placed onto the eye to alleviate any pain before an opening is made in the natural lens so the contents can be removed and the bag, the “capsule” of the lens, is polished. It is important to note that the entire lens is not removed, but only the aged degenerated and discolored lens fibers which have become nonfunctional. The opening is self-sealing, so no stitches are required, which allows for rapid recovery—some people even resume work the same day! Vision may be blurry for a few days but rapidly recovers; patients can resume nearly all activities in a few days.

Unlike with any other surgery that deteriorates over time, the results, while almost instantaneous, can continue to improve. Several studies and patients have reported the quality of vision often improves to levels they had not previously experienced. These results are an “eye opener” (pun intended) even for pioneers of this procedure; the brain learns to intercept the data being presented to it much faster over time, meaning the speed of reading increases, driving improves and any glare decreases. Applied to real life, these changes mean your golf game is likely to

improve, you’ll be able to read faster and more efficiently and your eyes will basically feel like they’re getting younger! TREATMENT FOR ALL AGES “Would this work for someone my age?” I asked Dr. Khanna, who noted this particular procedure is reserved for people 45 and older. For those with similar numbers who are in their 20s, Dr. Khanna recommends a new advanced technology called iDesign Lasik. An automatic closed-loop computerized system, iDesign Lasik is the next generation in Lasik vision correction. Unlike in previous technologies, human intervention of the laser is avoided as more than 1,000 rays are sent into the eye, and the reflected data from the retina is captured by a fast microprocessor that calculates treatment necessary over the 1,000 zones. At the same time, a picture of the colored part of the eye is taken, and all this information is stored on a thumb drive and transferred to the laser. While the person is under the laser, the laser matches the information to the eye. If the eye moves, the laser moves with it, improving the accuracy and safety of the procedure. iDesign Lasik is designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism in people under 45 years old. Whatever your age, Dr. Khanna can determine the best treatment and deliver it in the safest, most successful way possible. Wouldn’t it be great to rejuvenate your aging eyes? At Khanna Vision Institute, Dr. Khanna and his team want you to be able to see near, far and everything in between. His goal is to not only restore your eyes to the vision of your youth but make them even better! Imagine tossing your bifocals, trifocals, progressives, contact lenses and even those cheap readers. The new PIE (Presbyopic Implant in Eye) technology allows people over 50 to achieve unparalleled vision. The only technology that prevents the development of cataracts, PIE is considered superior to Lasik for people over 50, as it provides all three vision capabilities—near, middle and far—in each eye and does not induce corneal nerve damage and prevents irritating dryness. Being able to see without glasses or contacts is life-changing; the team at Khanna Vision Institute looks forward to assisting people on their journey to clearer vision.

CONEJO VALLEY’S PRIVATE SCHOOLS PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A RANGE OF OFFERINGS IN ADDITION TO STRONG ACADEMIC CURRICULUMS.

Ascension Lutheran School Ascension Lutheran offers transitional kindergarten through 8th grade and is committed to growing the next generation of bold, compassionate leaders. “Students thrive in a caring Christian community where they are challenged academically through an educational approach that focuses on the whole child,” says Principal Karen Jonas. “The result is graduates who are servant-minded confident leaders who prove to be high achievers in high school and beyond.” Special programs include the outdoor classroom and organic teaching garden, dynamic nature-based learning spaces that instill a sense of stewardship for God's world while inspiring creativity. “Math, science, art, literature and entrepreneurship are a few of the skills enriched through outdoor learning experiences,” Jonas says. Additionally, the Makerspace is where students develop 21st-century skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, persistence and collaboration through hands-on learning and exploration. Technology is integrated at all grade levels. For instance, an interactive board and Apple TV capabilities are used in all classrooms, and a MacBook Pro Mobile Computer Lab provides additional options. Ascension also participates in the Tri-Valley Christian Athletic League with sports teams for Grades 5 through 8. “More than 60% of students  choose to participate in at least one sport,” says Jonas, noting the school offers teams for football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and co-ed volleyball.  Research shows there are many benefits for students who experience a transitional kindergarten through 8th grade learning environment, she adds. “As children grow through our program each year at Ascension, we are instilling in them a love of learning and a foundation of leadership coupled with a passion for service,” Jonas says. “As a result, our graduates leave here as confident leaders who have a clear sense of who they are and how they want to make a difference in the world.”  Ascension Lutheran School is located at 1600 E. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks. Call 805.496.2419 or visit ALSchoo.org/ to learn more.

DEDICATED TEACHER takes top honors

SEQUOIA MIDDLE SCHOOL EIGHTH GRADE INSTRUCTOR SHANNON BARANSKI HAS MANY REASONS TO CELEBRATE THIS YEAR. The 36-year-old Camarillo resident was recently awarded “Teacher of the Year,” having been named “Teacher of the Month” in April. The awards, given through collaboration with the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Conejo Valley Unified School District’s (CVUSD) “Teacher of the Month” program, recognize 10 nominated teachers throughout the year, one of which is named “Teacher of the Year.” Baranski says she was blown away when she received the “Teacher of the Month” award. “When you think about teaching and the validation it has, you often don’t get to know your impact until much later,” Baranski says. “When the students go on to high school and come back to visit you, that’s the reward you get when you’re a teacher.” In a surprise ceremony, Baranski was named the 2017-2018 “Teacher of the Year,” crediting her coworkers for inspiring her. “It is very humbling and so important for every teacher to get this validation,” says Baranski. “I am constantly inspired by my coworkers’ creativity and inter-disciplinary collaboration. You are only as strong as the team around you and I don’t know if I’d be as effective of a teacher without them.”

FINANCIAL BUZZ

ARTICLE JEFF RUNYAN

LIFELONG STUDENTS “BACK-TO-SCHOOL” IS AN EXCITING TIME OF YEAR WHEN CHILDREN PREPARE FOR THE PRODUCTIVE AND GROWTH-ORIENTED PERIOD AHEAD. The goal of growth in intellect and experience are the ideals of parents for their child, all to increase the likelihood of success in their future. And, while we prep the kids with these refreshed, start the school year right attitudes, along with dressing them in new school clothes and backpacks, we should also remember that as adults, we would do well to seek the same—an invigorated attitude for growth and education securing an even more successful future. Readers of this article already know a lot of life’s most productive lessons don’t occur in the classroom but are discovered in real-world experience. Unfortunately for some students, recent experience may have unintentionally taught that stock, bond and real estate asset values only rise. And, although the last nine years have been an “investor’s delight,” this could result in a distorted lesson for younger savers when reflected against a longer historical backdrop. For example, in June the Federal Reserve Board raised interest rates. In fact, that makes seven consistent interest rate hikes of a quarter of a point since late 2016. Please remember that interest rates are essentially the price of money. So, if the price of money rises, this will affect how people and businesses spend and consume. When you borrow money, you pay interest on the funds borrowed. As the price of the money goes up, it means a household or business can afford to borrow less, which means they invest or purchase less. When people and businesses spend less, businesses earn a smaller profit. When they earn less in profit or have none at all, they have to reduce their workforce. A reduction in workforce is a euphemism for layoffs, and a laid-off person may not have sufficient income, further perpetuating the cycle.  So, we can say interest rates are still historically “low,” but the lesson here is to recognize that they have climbed in a meaningful way. In the past when the Fed raised rates “too much,” it’s been a consequential negative for asset prices. U.S. interest rates averaged 5.7% from 1971 until 2018. It’s worth remembering that extremes like when rates reached 20% in March of 1980 and the record low of 0.25% in December of 2008 are exceptions to the norm, not the norm itself. The reality of the Fed raising rates from the 0.25 all-time low to the 2% we’re at now is a significant increase in rates, or the price of money, by 700%. The move is intended to slow the heated market and economy, and we will know in the quarters ahead if or when “too much” is in fact “too much.” So, how the Fed handles the continuance of interest rate hikes in an effort to preserve the balance between growth in the economy vs. an overstimulated one is a tough one. Maybe now is the time to prepare an invigorated plan to make sure your portfolio reflects a greater history than the past nine years. It is important that you’re protected in the event that markets respond like they have with “too many” rate hikes in the past. After all, this is a lesson I’d rather learn from history than from real-world experience.   46

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

do you have a healthy nervous system? ARTICLE ALAN DUBEN, DC

Sadly, too many of our children suffer from attention deficit syndromes, parents are experiencing memory loss or dementia, and those of us in the middle find ourselves searching endlessly for our lost keys. One cause of these conditions is the lack of healthy fats in our diet. ESSENTIAL FATS Despite a bad reputation, fats are essential nutrients, meaning they are essential to health. The brain and nervous system are 65% fat, and the surface of every cell in our body is fat. Fats keep our skin healthy, support immune function and lower the risk of diabetes. Our hormones are made from fat, and fats are carriers for vitamins and minerals. Good fats improve and normalize cholesterol levels, support a healthy heart and are known to aid in prevention of cancer. Fats are nutritional essentials. GOOD FATS For optimal health and function, your brain and body depend on an equal balance of Omega-6s to Omega-3s in your diet to properly regulate your body’s inflammatory response. The fatty acids AA (an Omega-6) and EPA/DHA (an Omega-3) are the most critical to balance since they compete for available enzymes. A ratio of 5:1 or

TRIAN VAULTING CLUB IS AN EXTRAORDINARY PLACE. Founded in 2000 by two-time world champion equestrian vaulter, Devon Maitozo, F.A.C.E. teaches the innovative sport of equestrian vaulting to participants of all ages. Described as a combination of gymnastics and dance performed on a moving horse set to music, EV attracts participants who are drawn to the sport for recreation and competition. Located at El Campeon Ranch, an Olympic equestrian facility in Thousand Oaks, F.A.C.E. is a well-established equestrian vaulting club, earning worldwide recognition as the first and only United States equestrian vaulting team to win a gold medal in the world championships. Equestrian vaulting dates back more than 2,000 years, while modern vaulting was developed after World War II in Germany to introduce equestrian sports to children. Popular across Europe, EV

surfaced in the U.S. during the late 1960s, with the first competition in the country taking place in 1969. Currently, 141+ vaulting clubs and affiliates exist in the U.S., per the American Vaulting Association. Vaulters compete individually, in pairs (pas de deux) and on teams. At F.A.C.E., beginners start on stationary vaulting barrels before moving on to actual horses. Vaulting routines are performed on the back of a cantering horse, which travels in a circle while attached to a trainer via a lunge line. Surprisingly, no previous gymnastics or riding experience is required for those interested in trying equestrian vaulting. Naturally, vaulting horses must be calm, sure-footed, strong and fit, with a steady gait. Vaulting horses are specially trained to be part of a team, and vaulters and horses must work in perfect harmony to succeed. “I am passionate about this unique sport and I want equestrian vaulting to be accessible to the community,” says Maitozo. “I also want F.A.C.E. to be a place where children and adults at all levels can experience vaulting while learning to build confidence by working with horses." Maitozo started vaulting as a child and has been involved in the sport for the past 36 years. He earned an individual world championship gold medal in 1998 as well as a gold medal as a coach and teammate in 2010. A trainer, choreographer, performer and competitor with F.A.C.E., Maitozo has coached numerous competitors to success at all levels. He is truly dedicated to teaching, as well as coaching and fielding teams to represent the United States internationally. Members of F.A.C.E. will compete this year at the World Equestrian Games, held in Tryon, North Carolina, in September. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, F.A.C.E. welcomes tax-deductible donations to pay for team members to compete nationally and internationally and for people to take lessons to learn about the sport. Classes are offered throughout the year at F.A.C.E. Maitozo and his experienced team of skilled and friendly instructors welcome all levels to take an introductory lesson for a low fee. Visitors are also welcomed to visit their facilities and watch the vaulters practice and perform.

PARTING THOUGHTS

bac k t o scho ol: ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

WALKING DOWN MEMORY LANE IF YOU’RE READING THIS RIGHT NOW YOU MIGHT THINK THIS WAS ABOUT SENDING YOUR KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL, WHICH WAS BOTH A HAPPY AND SAD TIME FOR ME WHEN MY KIDS WERE YOUNGER. Back to school meant schedules and less time together. I really enjoyed that free-flowing time together during the summer. In this case, “going back to school” involves my high school reunion and seeing the friends and people I might not have really connected with years ago. In some ways, I’m excited to check in and connect, but in others, I question, if we haven’t kept in touch this whole time, why now? Well, just recently, my high school peers and I lost a friend to that ugly thing called cancer; when we all showed up at her funeral, it felt like a reunion. I loved that there wasn’t that judging thing going on, even though we were all interested in who still looked amazing, who was still married and how each other’s lives had turned out. If you’ve attended your reunions or stayed in touch with school friends, you know there are some amazing memories—even just your friends remembering your parents or your family home, and funny situations that happened when you were younger. This is the part I’m looking forward to enjoying. Maybe our lives took us in different directions, but there is still that common bond of shared times. I love that we’ve made memories together. I know even for my kids who have made lots of friends, as they get older, they still see them, attend weddings and associate with them for business. We even keep our connections to some of our teachers. Think of school as a time to learn, while remembering the world is really small and that your paths will likely cross again throughout the years. Continue to keep making memories; sometimes the best part of life is looking back and recalling shared times with someone. I think they call it walking down memory lane.
