WELL HERE WE ARE CELEBRATING THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE 4TH OF JULY IN A VERY UNUNITED STATE OF AFFAIRS. Yes, it really bothers us. We love the communities we cover with Conejo Valley Lifestyle and Malibu to Palisades Lifestyle. We are ready to celebrate the 4th of July and our country with family, food, fireworks, flags waving, parades, speeches about the glory of being American, while at the same time our fellow Americans and our supposed leaders are tearing us apart. Has the extreme freedom of the digital universe opened up Pandora’s Box and let loose all of the pent up frustrations and dysfunction that old technology kept hidden? Are we free to attack each other on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and other digital platforms and not take responsibility for the poison that spews forth? Sticks and stones hurt, but so do words filled with hatred and lies. Tell a lie often and loud enough and it becomes the truth to many people. Just ask some politicians. They are quite good at it.

I am a Vietnam War era veteran. I served during a time when our country started to not value patriotism. It began to lose its value because of a very divisive war.

LAYOUT DESIGNERS

Since then I have read a great deal about how we were lied to with impunity to justify that war. Nevertheless, I will forgive and hold onto the values that actually did make America great. Those values are represented in the Statue of Liberty around whom fireworks are burst with hardly any thought of what it all really means. Time is getting short to revisit those values. We need to embrace them and reunite.

S AN TA CR UZ

On the warmer north side of the Monterey Bay where the redwoods meet the ocean sits the coastal town of Santa Cruz. Off the beaten path, Santa Cruz is about a six-hour drive (about 330 miles) from home. It boasts picturesque beaches, sea piers, wharfs and boat harbors, as well as mountain redwood forests and multitudes of streams and lakes. Its redwood forests house vast arrays of trails and tiny mountain towns, like Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Bonny Dune and Lompico that look as if they’ve been preserved in time for a hundred years. Boarding the old train for a 6-mile ride from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park to Felton through a winding forest and trestle bridge railroad is like going back in time. The old-style passenger train stops in the towering Old Growth Redwood forest called the Henry Cowell State Park and Roaring Camp Railroad. Bring your flip flops, hiking shoes, mountain bikes or surfboards to suit your nature, as this outdoorsy natural town offers many activities for the young at heart. Enjoy plenty of people watching, street performers, restaurants and shopping in the downtown center at Pacific Avenue, the heart of Santa Cruz, where local UC Santa Cruz students known for their unusual Banana Slugs mascot frequent coffee shops. After spending a little time in this town, visitors will understand what is meant by the ubiquitous bumper stickers proclaiming to “Keep Santa Cruz Weird." This fun-loving surf town located 90 minutes south of San Francisco and 30 minutes west of Silicon Valley has been a favorite getaway for these northern crowds for decades.

AT TRI-VALLEY VACUUM & CLEANING SUPPLY, QUALITY IS IN THE BAG THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF A FRESHLY VACUUMED CARPET TO MAKE YOUR HOME SPARKLE WITH CLEANLINESS. Given the impact vacuuming has on your environment, choosing a quality vacuum is an important decision. With so many vacuums on the market, deciding which one to buy can be quite overwhelming. One of the first decisions consumers must make when shopping for a new vacuum is whether to purchase a bagless or bagged variety. Which is better? At Tri-Valley Vacuum & Cleaning Supply in Thousand Oaks, owner Joseph Simeone speaks from his 30+ years of experience in the business when he asserts that bagged vacuums outperform bagless types. “Vacuum bags are hygienic and improve filtration, suction and cleaning performance,” says Simeone. “Filler bags are essential components of high-performance vacuums, because they hold virtually all the dirt captured by the machines, improving the effectiveness and useful life of vacuum microfilters. This is true because only a tiny fraction of particles escapes from Sebo's (a high quality German-made vacuum) three-layer bags, but any suction particles are then easily trapped by highly effective microfilters.” Sebo's "top-filter” bags also ensure continuously strong suction because dirt enters from the top, deposits at the bottom and accumulates upward, while air exits through the sides, allowing unimpeded airflow as they fill to capacity, Simeone adds. Also, all Sebo bags are large capacity, so they hold about 10 times the debris volume, as compared to the debris capacity of dirt containers found on typical bagless vacuums. In addition, changing Sebo bags takes just a few seconds and is easy to do. While changing the bag, a "sealing cap" covers the opening, keeping dust sealed inside to maintain excellent hygienic conditions. People with allergies or asthma find it important to have vacuums, like Sebos, that feature superb filtration systems with quality filter bag technology. THE CASE AGAINST BAGLESS VACUUMS “Bagless vacuums are not hygienic and diminish filtration, suction and cleaning performance,” says Simeone, adding, “Without bags to hold nearly all the captured dirt, the microfilters on bagless vacuums quickly clog from excessive dirt buildup and must be replaced often or a loss of suction and cleaning effectiveness will occur.” What’s more, bagless vacuum microfilters are expensive, often costing more than a multi-year supply of Sebo's large capacity filter bags. And perhaps the most annoying problem, says Simeone, is that dust and other allergens become airborne when emptying bagless vacuum dirt containers. 44

X4 Boost

SO WHY ARE BAGLESS VACUUMS SO POPULAR? Despite the argument that bagged vacuums are superior to bagless types, bagless vacuums outsell bagged vacuums in today's United States marketplace. “This should not happen, if one considers the substantial advantages bagged vacuums offer, as compared to bagless machines,” says Simeone, pointing to a reasonable explanation. “Simply put, bagless vacuums are popular for two reasons: 1) the perception that money is saved by not buying vacuum bags, and 2) it is easier to empty a bagless dirt container than to replace a full vacuum bag.” Despite manufacturers’ advertising campaigns that support these notions, in reality, these perceived advantages are more than offset by the high cost and inconvenience of frequent microfilter changes, diminished filtration and suction performance, the shortened life of vacuum motors caused by clogged microfilters and the hassle of emptying perpetually full dirt containers, explains Simeone. “If you want a quality vacuum that will clean your home better, keep allergens out of the air and last for years to come, come talk to us at Tri-Valley about the Sebo bagged vacuums. You’ll be glad you did,” says Simeone.

MONEY? WE ALL THINK ABOUT IT. We all want it. And, we all need it. Whether you work for it, inherit it or you somehow have access to it from a spouse or another, money is an exciting resource that people handle very differently. Money can be a source of pride for some who are pleased with their disciplined, lifelong choices that have led to the accumulation of wealth. Others have been known to have said, "it takes money to make money” and spend it freely in anticipation that spending will build more relationships and business in the future. Whatever your approach, it may well be one that you don't talk about with others, and if you do, it is not likely often. Everyone grows up in a household where views, experiences and circumstances differ with handling money, and because of that, they perceive it differently. These attitudes and beliefs that each of us innately has are the underpinnings of how people choose and cope with economic decisions. That's why some who save prudently and may appear to have a "smaller annual income" based on their consumption habits frequently can surprise family and friends when, at their death, it's learned that they had large estates or significant assets. It's the central idea of the book, The Millionaire Next Door, by Thomas J. Stanley that describes "Under Accumulators of Wealth" and "Prodigious Accumulators of Wealth" and the differentiating habits between each. The research concluded that frequently high earning professionals might accumulate less wealth than a lower earning person because they have an expensive lifestyle and consumption habits that drain wealth as opposed to building net worth. But the reality is prudent money management, retirement planning and compound interest are typically topics not taught in school, even though they are subjects that will affect you throughout life. And, given that Los Angeles is the kind of environment that might be hard not to be tempted to "keep up with the Joneses." But, if you have a competitive spirit and like keeping up, try this: Compete with what you don't see. Compete with their 401k statement value, the IRA Rollover accounts and the investment portfolios that show up in the mailbox quarterly. Imagining what the "Joneses" have may nudge you into increasing your 401k contributions and paying down your mortgage balance faster! And that competition will leave your wallet fuller and your mind more at ease. So, if you keep your focus on what you're most interested in achieving and minimize your acquisition of depreciating assets, you can find balance and enjoy both the joy of living in the here and now, while accumulating wealth to give you peace of mind, making your retirement years as comfortable as those you're in now.

WITH THREE LOCATIONS IN THE CONEJO VALLEY, BURT’S PHARMACY IS COMMITTED TO HELPING CLIENTS ACHIEVE ALL THEIR HEALTH CARE GOALS—FROM TREATING EVERYDAY CONDITIONS TO ACHIEVING PERSONAL WELLNESS. “Our talented and compassionate care team members can answer your questions and find solutions that fit you like a glove,” says Robbie Leark, owner of the family-operated endeavor. Clients benefit from everyday low prices, in-house compounding services, preferred pricing, easy access to medical supplies—and a friendly, supportive staff that are always just a phone call away. “We focus on the service level, which usually you’re not going to find with a chain,” Leark says. Deliveries, for instance, can be made directly to the patient at work or at home. “We really try to go out of our way to help people—it’s really that simple,” Leark says. The same goes for pricing. “Low prices and value matter; that’s why we’ll always go above and beyond to help you save on your meds whenever possible at

Burt’s,” Leark says. “If you find a lower price, we’ll do our best to match it or beat it to save you money.” Additionally, “due to our unique relationships with our wholesalers, we are often able to get products in the same day or following morning if the product is not already in stock. This includes many hard to find items and specialty medications.” As far as medical equipment is concerned, Burt’s offers just about everything, including canes, crutches and other walking aids; a variety of manual and electric wheelchairs; and power scooters and lift chairs. Burt’s also has hospital beds, equipment for bath safety, compression stockings, wound care products, and ostomy and catheter supplies. Burt’s is especially unique for its compounding pharmacy, which works with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs. Burt’s Pharmacy offers compounding services in a range of categories, including bio-identical hormone replacement, pain management, pediatric, anti-aging and skincare, dental, and even pet medications. “What works for one doesn’t always work for another, and that means that sometimes, a one-size-fits-all approach to medication just isn’t right,” he says. “Whether the dose is wrong, a patient is sensitive to a filler in a pill, or someone only responds to bio-identical hormones rather than synthetics, we turn to the ancient art of compounding as a solution.” Burt’s Pharmacy also gives back to the community, including sponsoring the local Love Run, which benefits Senior Concerns, a private, nonprofit organization that serves frail and special-needs older adults. “We also do a lot with the local schools,” Leark says. “Most of these are brought to us by our patients and we like to support the people who are supporting us. We try to be involved as much as we can.” Above all, the main goal of Burt’s Pharmacy “is helping people,” Leark further emphasizes. “We do whatever we can to help—that’s the most important thing to us.”

Burt’s Pharmacy has three locations: 2333 Borchard Road in Newbury Park, 805.498.6675; 430 Avenida De Los Arboles in Thousand Oaks, 805.492.2451; 2900 Townsgate Road, Suite #105, in Westlake Village, 805.371.4000. For more information, visit BurtsRX.com.

RED CROSS RIDE ARTICLE KATERI WOZNY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | July 2018

ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-FIVE BICYCLISTS TOOK TO THE STREETS OF VENTURA COUNTY TO DO A GOOD DEED BY SUPPORTING THE MILITARY, VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES DURING THE AMERICAN RED CROSS OF VENTURA COUNTY’S THIRD OPERATION: RIDE FOR THE RED EVENT. The ride included three separate routes throughout the county, comprising 30, 61 and 99 miles with rest stops every 10 miles. Riders raised a total of $29,847 to support the Red Cross’ Service to Armed Forces Program and more than 80 volunteers lent a helping hand to make the ride a success. Operation: Ride for the Red was created in 2014 by local volunteers and neighbors Kevin Delson, Ken Bauer and Diane Krehbiel-Delson. “We all have a passion for the armed forces and cycling, and that’s why all the military and veteran riders get to ride for free in our event,” says Krehbiel-Delson. “My husband, Kevin, has ridden across the country and Ken sits on the board for the Red Cross, so we thought the ride would be a great way to give back to SAF.” According to the Red Cross, since 9/11, the nonprofit has served more than 1 million military families. The Red Cross is also the only military service organization that supports military families from the day they enlist through their time as a veteran. Fifty-five of those participating bicyclists who got to ride for free were veterans, including Barry Cole, Ken Exum, Bruce Newman and Ray Tschaeche. Cole was an Army troop truck driver during the Vietnam era between 1968 to 1970 and was stationed in St. Louis and Sacramento. It was his first time participating in the event. “When I was in the service, the general feeling was not positive toward the military,” says Cole, 71, of Ventura. “Now it’s changed and being able to support the military population is a good thing to do. I wanted to be a part of it [bicycle ride].” Exum is a Navy veteran who was active from 1975 to 1996 and was deployed during Operation Desert Storm on the USS La Salle. He says the Red Cross has always played an important role in his life. “I had to deal with notifications as a call officer and when my grandparent died, I was deployed and I got a Red Cross message telling me what had happened,” says Exum, 61, of Simi Valley. “It’s important to support them.” As an avid bike rider, Navy veteran Newman rode in the event two times. Active and in the reserves between 1959 to 1965, Newman recalls being in the Western Pacific on active duty and viewing the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor before the monument was built. “That was an emotional experience,” says Newman, 81, of Tarzana. “When you went by Pearl Harbor, you saluted the Arizona. I did it at 5 in the afternoon with the gorgeous color of the mountains and ocean in the background.” Newman says the bicycle ride is a common thread that joins everyone together. “I like the association of helping veterans and appreciate what the guys are going through,” says Newman. “The problems the veterans have now are more recognized and treated more carefully than when I went through my service.”

The 2018 ride was also Tschaeche’s second year. As a veteran of the Air National Guard from 1977 to 2017, he was deployed in support of Team Spirit in Korea and had the opportunity to work with a patriot missile group during an Army exercise in New Mexico. He says the ride is important to bring awareness to veterans and the military. “When my father-in-law died, I was deployed and my wife got a hold of me through the Red Cross,” says Tschaeche, 60, of Simi Valley. “I appreciate the Red Cross volunteers. They help a whole new world and I will support wherever I can.” Krehbiel-Delson says looking forward, she hopes to see Operation: Ride for the Red throughout the U.S. “My vision is for it to be as big as the Amgen Tour and Tour de France where bikers ride the streets and passersby acknowledge by saluting them,” says Krehbiel-Delson. For more information and to get involved, contact Elizabeth “Liz” Baker, Ventura/Central Chapter Program Manager, at 805.322.7691 or visit RedCross.org.

"AFTER RIDING IN A COMBINATION OF OVER 70 CENTURIES AND DOUBLE CENTURIES I WAS DELIGHTED TO FIND A RIDE CLOSE TO MY HOME IN VENTURA. LITTLE DID I REALIZE WHEN SIGNING UP THAT IT WOULD BE ONE OF THE BEST ORGANIZED RIDING EVENTS I HAVE EVER BEEN PART OF. THE PEOPLE WERE CORDIAL, HELPFUL AND FULL OF ENERGY. THE SETUP OF REST STOPS WITH RIDE-THROUGH MARKERS WAS REALLY THOUGHTFUL. AND, THE COURSE WAS CHALLENGING, BUT WITH MOST OF THE CLIMBING EARLY ON, WAS A GREAT TOUR. I HOPE TO SEE IT ON THE CALENDAR AGAIN NEXT YEAR!" - J I M L A N U M

CHOOSE 1,000 WISHES

PARTING THOUGHTS

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | July 2018

WHEN YOU LOOK AT A FIELD OF DANDELIONS, YOU CAN EITHER SEE A HUNDRED WEEDS OR A THOUSAND WISHES. I choose a thousand wishes. Summer is a very special time of the year. Is there something you have wanted to do that you might not be able to because of work or school? If so, now is a great time to start making a list—some call it a bucket list—I call it a wish list. If I had time, I wish I could...? What’s on the top of your wish list? Some of us know, while others are just wishing. Stop wishing and start putting some action steps into place so you can live with abundance not only in your life, but your activities. We have so many amazing places nearby, and many of us have beautiful backyards, yet we look for fun in other places. I love my home, and when I take time to feel the warm air, close my eyes and relax my body, I feel rejuvenated in my own surroundings. I’m in the process of clearing and simplifying my life and home—another project to consider undertaking this summer—whatever you need or want in your life can be yours. I like to divide our summer in sections. Traveling is one thing my husband and I love to do. We’ve been going to the lake for years with our children, and now that our children are grown and have busy schedules, we travel with our kids and their families at different times. Our twin grandsons live close by, and we’re so grateful to have them, as well as spend time with our other two via FaceTime. We love spending time with them and watching them learn; it’s such a precious time. We also love music and plays and, best of all, trying new restaurants—we are definitely foodies! One of our new favorites things is our smoker, thanks to our oldest daughter and her hubby. While we used to have large parties, now we prefer to visit with a few couples, which allows for more intimate conversations. During summer, my roses and garden are also in full bloom, and I love harvesting fruit and flowers. Take a moment this summer to surround yourself with the things that make you happy. Remember, we’re all busy making money—don’t forget to make sure you’re making memories. Enjoy your summer and stay on the brighter side of life with the Kim Pagano Show, Saturdays from 7 to 8 a.m. on 1590 KVTA. Visit KimPaganoShow.com or tune in to her podcast at iTunes/The Kim Pagano Show for inspiration.

This summer, put your phone away for a few days. Make some memories that no-one knows about. Make some memories that are just yours.
