Happy Father's Day! JUNE 2017
D
ecember of 2016 was my father, Harold Malkin’s, Centennial. Since we timed our June Men’s Issue to coincide with Father’s Day, I thought I would take this opportunity to briefly celebrate his life.
Reflecting on who he was in terms of measured achievement and what he “coulda, shoulda” been in some ways by using career, status and money as a measuring stick, he came up a bit short of his dream. He loved sports but he could not go to college and study journalism and become a sports writer. By today’s standards, his family was working class and his opportunities were limited by the Great Depression and WWII. He compromised his goals and talent after that to make a living and raise a family. However, I believe in looking at his life as a generational continuum. He now has grandchildren who have collectively succeeded as adults in their careers and families above and beyond the level to which he aspired. There are also three great granddaughters (and maybe a couple more kids if we’re lucky) who are as smart as they are beautiful. Who knows what mountains they will eventually climb? So this delayed satisfaction and achievement can be viewed existentially. According to the renowned philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, "man first of all exists, encounters himself, surges up in the world—and defines himself afterwards." The principles, morals, ambitions, inherited talents and intelligence flowed through my father to subsequent generations. While none of us who came after him are perfect, I think if he were here to witness it, he would be pleased. As for us? All we can say (and really mean it) is “Thanks Dad!”

Achieve Optimal Wellness at
most innovative and enjoyable approach to health. From the moment you walk into our beautifully designed center, we want you to feel welcome. Our goal is to encourage, educate and empower each client with the resources to achieve a peak level of mental, physical and emotional wellness. OUR NICHE
As the name implies, our specialty program is Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss. Most people understand the struggles of dieting and often experience a short-term drop in weight, followed by a rebound to the initial weight. This cyclical pattern of losing and re-gaining is colloquially referred to as the “yo-yo effect.” The efficacy of our approach directly addresses the cause of this cycle, which rests deep within our “subconscious.” Whenever we learn to do something in life, we practice it until we no longer need to think about it as much. Hypnotherapy allows us to open the door to your subconscious mind and introduce an idea that would otherwise be rejected through the typical dieting approach (calorie/food deprivation). What differentiates Thinessence is our formulated method to create new connections within the brain. Our blueprint incorporates hypnotherapy, nutritional guidance, one-on-one coaching and state of the art equipment to create the most comprehensive approach to sustainable weight loss. The best part is that we can tailor each of these to fit the individual because every body is different. Our clients often say to us,

people carry extra weight due to a pattern that they developed when they were young, which no longer serves them. However, since habits are hard to break, we simply utilize the same mechanism to create a new pattern that supports what you want to achieve. No more shots, magic pills or starvation diets. Instead, retrain your mind and let your subconscious do all the heavy lifting.
If you are open to relaxing your body and focusing your mind to obtain a better level of physical, mental and emotional health, then hypnotherapy may be the missing link that all your diet plans have been missing. SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: THE SCIO: QUANTUM ENERGY MACHINE
The SCIO is a sophisticated and amazing Quantum Energy Device that uses a computerized connection to the client's body, taking biometric readings at a rate of approximately 4,000 measurements per second. There are two main components to the SCIO. One measures the energetic elements of the mind and body, which includes the digestive system and gut biome, hormones, stress reduction, sleep, emotional barriers, homeostasis, reliance on medications, breathing, allergens, emotions, meridians, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, muscles, foods, organs, bacteria, fungi, parasites, blood chemistry, bones, candida, chakras, toxins, chromosomes, urine chemistry, dental diseases and products, venoms, viruses, diseases, ligaments, vitamins, drugs, miasmas, worms, EEG, ECG, brain waves and more. The second provides bio-energy that the body can utilize to boost the inherent abilities found within our cells to help calibrate misalignments. Regardless of your goals, this device can help reveal details of your mental and physical health to enable us to help you in every way possible. SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: THE MAGNESPHERE
The Magnesphere utilizes Magnetic Resonance Technology, which creates gentle energy fields capable of speaking directly to the molecules within your body. A session typically lasts 60 minutes and requires nothing more than reclining in our relaxing chair and listening to calming music. In a world filled with stress, our bodies could certainly use a boost of balance on a regular basis. The Magnesphere triggers a natural state within the body known as, “the relaxation response.” This is characterized by the nervous system switching from stress mode to rest mode. Our ability to heal, repair and regenerate relies on balance within our nervous system. Many issues such as chronic pain, headaches, stiffness, sleeping difficulties and digestive issues can be combatted by repeated use of the device. The best part about this is there is no need for drugs, shots or surgeries because the Magnesphere is a completely holistic piece of equipment. WHY OUR CLIENTS CHOOSE THINESSENCE
Our mission is to create a sanctuary with resources to support a longer, healthier life. Thinessence is the quintessential place to revitalize the mind, energize the body and enhance one’s ability to reach a peak level of wellness, fitness and vitality. our wedding day is the beginning of your new life and every couple
deserves this experience to be perfect. On February 25, 2017, a memory to last a lifetime took place for a local couple here at North Ranch Country Club. Los Angeles Firefighter Jack Albert and Children’s Hospital Child Life Specialist Brittany Kramer first met through mutual friends during their freshman year of high school. As their relationship blossomed into true love, this match made in Heaven grew from a teenage crush to husband and wife before our eyes! When it came to finding their dream venue, these high school sweethearts envisioned their celebration in Westlake Village. “North Ranch has a rustic yet classic feel, which was exactly the look I was aiming for when I started planning,” says Brittany. Surrounded by 150 of their closest friends and family, this duo mixed modern and rustic with formal and casual for an insanely stylish celebration. The couple paired a color palette of burgundy and cream introducing wood and other earthy textures matching perfectly with our Napa Valley-inspired décor here at North Ranch. The only sight that bested the beauty of our panoramic mountain views was the couple meeting at the altar.

Reflecting on her big day, Brittany reaffirms her happiness with our venue. “Everything came together even better than I imagined. The staff at North Ranch was extremely friendly and accommodating; going above and beyond our expectations.” North Ranch Country Club has everything you could need for a one of a kind party experience for you and your guests. Our Southern California venue prides itself on culinary creativity and offering an extensive array of menus to choose from. Our indoor and outdoor sites, including our interchangeable wine foyer, sparkle with the touch of elegance that North Ranch is known for. Our doors are open seven days a week for a consultation and private tour of our grounds. We can’t wait for you to see what’s in store for you at North Ranch Country Club—where memories are made. RICHARD MILLION BURKE, JR. Richard Million Burke, Jr. was born with a “burning desire to serve and make a difference in the world.” “My parents never let me forget how many advantages I had been given in life, and that ‘to whom much is given, much is expected,’” says Burke, whose Jesuit professors’ mission to build “Men for others" fanned the flame of his urge to be a positive force in the world.
Fueled by compassion and the desire to make a positive difference, Burke serves on the board of the BIG Brothers BIG Sisters of Ventura County to promote the organization’s mission of mentoring youth in need of direction. “A lot of people think that giving is just about money. “I learned at a young age that following your passion is where the energy to live life to the fullest comes from,” he says.
As a mentor, Burke advises people to take risks and follow their dreams. “When you see possibilities, go after them,” he says. “Don't be afraid to ask for something. Always keep learning,” he adds, and, of course, “Find a way to give back using your time, talent and/or treasures. Doing so keeps you humble and in the end, always gives more back to you.” Burke continues to find ways to serve, such as through his “Serve One” project, which is designed to partner national and international organizations with youth for a year of post-high school service. “The goal is to connect them with the less fortunate people around the world and equip our future generations with the connections, character, experience and skills they need to take a more productive role in the world.” When he takes a break from serving others, Burke likes to read, work out and enjoy some red wine. “But mostly I love learning from the smartest people I can convince to let me hang out with them.” CONTINUED >

Mercedes-Benz The “Right Size” Van
T
he name Mercedes-Benz has long been synonymous with luxury and performance cars, but did you know they are also the world’s largest producer of commercial vehicles? In fact, the Benz company invented the cargo van
in 1896, setting the stage for what has become a revolution in the automotive industry. Today, van sales are soaring, as gas prices are staying low and consumers are looking for new forms of transportation to better suit their business and leisure lifestyle needs. Even better, Mercedes-Benz is currently offering some incredible deals on its latest innovation to U.S. shores—the Metris. The Metris van is the U.S. version of the multipurpose V-Class or Viano (also known as the Vito) van introduced in Europe in 1996. While much of the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle legacy has been growing for decades overseas, it introduced its popular Sprinter series of commercial vans to the United States in 2010 and the smaller Metris in 2015. The Metris is called the “right size” van, as it’s larger than a minivan, but smaller than its bigger brother, and still fits in a garage. The Metris Cargo and Metris Passenger vans are both customizable for work or play and serve many masters, depending on owner desires.

Metris
Excited to see this vehicle that fits into a new niche in the U.S. van market, I called on Richard Burke, Jr., Mercedes-Benz sales and marketing consultant, fleet and van specialist at Silver Star Mercedes-Benz of Thousand Oaks. Richard and I barely said “Hello” before he eagerly ushered me out the door to inspect what he called a “versatile, safe, comfortable, economical and technologically advanced van.” When I asked to take one for a spin, Richard urged me to give a Metris Passenger van a real workout and drive it for a couple days. Thus, I planned a 200-mile test drive with five golfers and their bags on a trek to Santa Ynez, north of Santa Barbara. THE ROAD TRIP HERO
The mountain road and blustery wind conditions were no match for the nimble Metris. Its electronic stability, cross-wind and lane-keeping assist systems kept the van on an even keel throughout, and the peppy 2-liter turbo, 208-horsepower engine shot up the hills without hesitation. En route, some of the guys worked on their laptops, thanks to vehicle plug-ins. Others charged their phones and just kicked back, enjoying the scenery through the large windows and taking advantage of the comfortable seats and ample leg and head room. Keeping the lads cool on the hot day was no problem, even for those in the very back of the Metris. A huge tournament was underway when we arrived and finding a parking spot was a challenge. With help from the van’s incredible 36-foot turning radius, active parking-assist system and back-up camera, we glided into a nice, tight spot. Unloading was a breeze with sliding doors on both sides of the van and a flip-up back door that revealed our five sets of golf clubs, beverage bags, shoes, jackets and sandwiches. The actual round of golf was a lot less impressive! Despite Santa Barbara rush hour traffic, on the way home, the Metris allowed us to zip in and out of lanes with ease. Steering was more responsive and smoother than just about any luxury car I’ve driven. The blind spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist provided added protection for our journey home. SETTING A NEW STANDARD
The test drive demonstrated the versatility of the Metris, available in Cargo and Passenger versions, each with its own unique features, but always with Mercedes-Benz quality. The new Metris Cargo vans start at around $29,000, while a fully loaded Metris Passenger can reach the mid $40s. Standard features for both vans include 17-inch, steel wheels, antilock brakes, stability control, cross-wind assist, front side airbags, driver inattention warning systems, several rear door configurations, infotainment data system with a 5.8-inch screen, air conditioning, fabric seats, automatic headlights, power windows and locks, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, five-speaker sound system and more. The Cargo model features additional options, such as rear compartment air ducts, a variety of partition types, LED lighting, rear window defrost and wipers, remote opening/closing windows and a variety of cargo-securing solutions. MERCEDES-BENZ METRIS (CON TI N U ED)
In addition to seating for seven to eight riders, the Metris Passenger’s added options include side curtain airbags, rear air conditioning, a driver-side sliding door, single flip-up tailgate or 180-degree opening rear doors with window defrost and wipers, rear privacy glass, remote window operation and four rear speakers. The Driver Comfort Package adds upgraded front seats with lumbar support and the Driver Efficiency Package includes a rearview camera, fog lights, cruise control and a Becker navigation system. The Active Safety Plus Package features blind-spot, lane-departure and collision prevention systems, a rearview camera, parking sensors, heated power mirrors, automatic wipers, a leather-wrapped and multi-function steering wheel and upgraded gauges. An automatic parallel parking system can also be added. The Cold Weather Package offers heated front seats, a heated windshield washer system and an upgraded heater. The Metris Passenger can also be upgraded with the Interior Appearance Package, providing more comfortable suspension tuning, an overhead control panel, front foot well lighting and interior carpeting. The Rear Passenger Comfort Package adds automatic climate control and a more powerful air-conditioning system. Poweropening sliding doors are another option. Twenty-four hour roadside assistance is included in the standard Mercedes-Benz service offerings. As for maintenance, the Metris schedule boasts a robust 15,000 miles that can be paid for in advance for extra savings. “Right now, we are able to include up to the first two services free, which can take you as far as 45,000 miles before you need to pay for your own oil change,” notes Burke. CUSTOMIZATION MADE EASY
While the vans are ready to go, as is, for most private purchases, customers interested in the Metris will find the van ideal for commercial or transport uses, such as shuttle services. With its MasterUpfitter program, Mercedes-Benz can customize its vans to suit virtually any need and fully maximize the available space. “If you have any idea for customization, we can build it and finance it through Mercedes-Benz Financial at rates as low as 0%,” says Burke.
“WHETHER YOU NEED A REFRIGERATION OR DELIVERY VAN, TOY HAULER, PEOPLE MOVER, MINI CAMPER OR ANYTHING ELSE, WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. ABOUT THE ONLY THING I HAVE NOT SEEN IS A JACUZZI IN THE BACK, BUT WE COULD DO IT!” The new Metris is a result of 120+ years of Mercedes-Benz engineering that is setting the bar for performance, durability and safety in the van market. Sitting between the minivans and its larger Sprinter sibling, the Metris is unlike its nonfamilial competitors and offers more of everything—low cost of ownership, power, space, payload, towing capacity and customizable options—which provide tremendous value. Add advanced Mercedes-Benz technology and safety features and the rest of the van field is left in the dust. The Metris just might be the “right” van at the right time. 38

For local Rotarians, this service has made a tremendous posi-

The Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks, for example, continually supports the local food pantry, Manna, and is working on a $100,000+ grant for equipment in their new facility. “Our club is amazing,” says Robert Bianchi, president of the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks, comprising 132 members and founded in 1962.

Heir Conditioning ARTICLE ROCKY MILLS
I
f you were to pass away today, would your heirs have easy access to all your financial, legal and practical information? For most of you,
the answer is “No.” And for some of you, it’s even “Heck No!” NO Gathering all this information can be quite a daunting task. Where do you start? HECK NO Many of you don’t want your kids knowing the details of your finances. Yes, they have a general notion of your wealth, but you keep the details close to the vest. A death in the family is, of course, a deeply emotional event. But I can tell you, having observed this so often over the past 40 years, that the emotional blow for the heirs is compounded by the frustration of having to sort out the deceased’s financial, legal and practical matters without a roadmap. Think about it. If you don’t tell them, how else will your heirs know about… • Your life insurance? • Your various bank and investment accounts? • Your safe deposit box? • Who becomes the trustee of the trust Aunt Tillie set up for you? • Who’s handling your rental property? • How to turn off your Facebook account? • All your automatically paid bills that keep getting paid long after you’re gone? The solution is simple. I offer this service to my clients free of charge, but you can do this on your own. Here are the 4 steps: 1. Make a list. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or fancy. Make sure it includes: ■ VITALS: Your Social Security Number, date of birth (which they should know…) ■ ACCOUNTS & POLICIES: Account number, online password, address, contact person, approximate value ■ PROFESSIONALS: Financial advisor, CPA, attorney, realtor, insurance agent ■ CONTACTS: Doctor(s), religious leader, business partner(s), charitable/civic boards. 2. Gather documents. ■ Certificates: Birth, marriage, divorce ■ Will or trust, power of attorney, pre- or post-nuptials, partnerships,
buy-sell agreements ■ Property deed/titles, automobile pink slips, insurance policies ■ Tax return.
3. Store them. This list and set of documents need to be put in a very secure location but with easy access—you’ll need to update the Robert A. "Rocky" Mills is president of Westlake
