Batter Up!

JANUARY 2017

W

ell, it’s finally 2017! Taking into consideration what an uproarious year just passed, maybe we should just thank our lucky stars we made it through to a new year and leave it at that. Since I am the classic “eternal optimist,” I have decided to do better than that and “Look for the Silver Lining” as the old standard song suggests. Of course, researchers in the U.K. suggest that optimists like me simply have a malfunctioning frontal lobe. Maybe that’s why I’ve been known to throw good money after bad in Las Vegas. You’d think all those free room and gourmet dining offers from Caesars Palace would have clued me in. Instead, how about if you lose some weight and keep it off, eat better and healthier, join a gym and actually go there at least four times a week, get a better job if you hate the one you have, take genuine self-improvement classes, or start the new business you have been dreaming about? I could go on and on, but my point is now is a great time to fish and not cut bait. When Robin and I started Conejo Valley Lifestyle, we were at a crossroads. Frankly, I was starting to be “aged out” of jobs and consulting assignments I was very well-qualified for. Age discrimination? Heck yes! But complaining about it or giving up led nowhere. It was a new year then and being an “eternal optimist,” Robin and I started a new community magazine in a very crowded and competitive market. Almost two years later, as another song goes, “I’m Still Here.” So I urge you to try something new and positive to better yourself and improve your situation. If the Chicago Cubs can come from behind, 3 games to 1, and finally win a World Series, just imagine what you can do in 2017! Batter up!

Senior Concerns was selected as one of two charities to participate in the Ventura County Star’s 2016 Bellringer Campaign, which raised funds for the organization’s Meals On Wheels Program, enabling Senior Concerns to deliver more than 5,000 freshly prepared, nutritionally balanced meals to homebound seniors in Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park during the holiday season. Now in its 37th year, the Ventura County Star’s Bellringer Campaign “provides a terrific opportunity to raise awareness about senior hunger in our community and the value of programs such as Senior Concerns’ Meals On Wheels Program,” says Andrea Gallagher, President of Senior Concerns. “Many of those we serve are very low income and must choose between food, rent or medicine,” explains Gallagher. “Through donations from the community, we are able to provide scholarships to low-income, homebound seniors and ensure seniors have access to the healthy meals we provide. Another added benefit of our Meals On Wheels Program is the daily check in by a caring volunteer, helping to ensure the senior is safe.” 20

YOUTH HONORED AT NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY Interface Children & Family Services’ Youth Advisory Board proudly accepted the honor of the 2016 Ventura County Youth Philanthropist Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals Santa Barbara/Ventura County Chapter. Viewpoint School's Katie Gould accepted the award on behalf of Founder Rachel Furash at the elite showing of prominent leaders and philanthropists at the 30th anniversary of National Philanthropy Day. The awards luncheon took place at the Ventura Beach Marriott. "Rachel took initiative and led a group of 25 students who helped rally community members to eventually raise $45,000 in just two years. On the evening of last year's annual gala, she singlehandedly secured a van for the transport of homeless youth by 'gently' grabbing the microphone from emcee Andrew Firestone to make an emotional appeal to a captive audience of 250. Next thing we knew, one of the sponsors, Jeff Sukay of Kirby Automotive, offered to donate a van,” recalled Interface's Executive Director Erik Sternad during the ceremony. The Youth Advisory Board holds bake sales, secures gift cards during the holidays and leads a Family 5K Run with help from Stevenson Fitness, the cheer team from Oaks Christian and many other local families and organizations, as well as volunteer at various Interface events. ecky Degn was frustrated—she wanted to give back to the community but had found several volunteer organizations to be “disorganized and chaotic.” Then she met Rick Tanaka, director of the Conejo Senior Volunteer Program, who “cut out all the frustration” for her. Degn now volunteers with the Conejo chapter of America Supporting Americans, preparing care packages for soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. She enjoys the camaraderie of working with others on a “likeminded goal,” and her ASA work “is fun, enjoyable, and is a really worthy cause to commit my time to.” Are you ready to make a difference in our community this year, but don’t know where to start? If you are 55 or older, you can join the 1,000 area men and women already sharing their unique skills and talents through the CSVP. "Community service is an excellent way to continue the lifelong process of self-discovery and growth,” says Tanaka. “It allows you to share your gifts, explore your interests and develop new talents.” Sponsored by the Conejo Recreation and Park District, the CSVP provides opportunities for seniors “to use their life experience

and skills to meet local community needs.” Volunteers “plant gardens, tutor children, program computers, assist seniors to live independently and serve in other vital roles.” “Volunteering is a great opportunity for seniors to stay active and engaged in the community, which leads to a healthier and happier lifestyle,” says Tanaka. “We specialize in providing those opportunities.” Becky credits Tanaka for making the CSVP’s volunteer experience so rewarding. “I wouldn’t have found the ASA program if it wasn’t for Rick,” she says. “He puts the right volunteers in the right positions.”

Tanaka notes, “It’s the volunteers’ participation that allows the program to have the impact that it does—as you can see by the number of volunteers, this is a community that is eager to get out there and help in whatever way they can.” More than 60 area nonprofit community agencies, including Mary Health of the Sick, Stagecoach Inn Museum and the Thousand Oaks Police Department, are served by CSVP volunteers. While giving to the community, CSVP members also reap benefits by making new friends and staying involved. “Meaningful community engagement provides physical and mental stimulation that is proven to be essential for maintaining health and wellness in retirement,” says Tanaka. This “creates a trifecta of benefits, as senior volunteers stay active and engaged by helping public services to better serve the community.” Not sure how you can contribute or what skills you can share? Simply call, email or visit the CSVP office at the Goebel Adult Community Center in Thousand Oaks to meet with Tanaka, discuss your interests and find a volunteer position that matches your goals. In addition to offering volunteer opportunities, the CSVP also provides a variety of resources and services, including tax

preparation assistance and a senior nutrition program, that benefit area seniors. This month, the CSVP is hosting the third annual CSVP Wellness Fest on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Goebel Center. The biggest CSVP fundraising event of the year, the 2017 Wellness Fest is geared toward seniors and adult children of seniors, and will bring together area nonprofit organizations and local businesses to offer free information, screenings and giveaways. More than 600 attendees are expected at this year’s free event, and sponsors include Atria Senior Living, Home Helpers and Los Robles Hospital, with additional support from Regal Medical Group and Panitz and Kossoff, LLP. If you’ve resolved to be healthier and more active in 2017, Wellness Fest is the perfect event to kick off your new year! For ticket and event information, visit CRPD.org/wellness. Pennsylvania ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BEN MALKIN

W

hile I have lived most of the past 40 years in Southern California, I grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania. When October rolls around each year, something within my Pennsylvania “Philly Boy” DNA stirs and I climb onto a plane and fly home again so I can enjoy the explosion of color, bright crisp weather and traditions that Autumn in the eastern U.S. has to offer. Lucky for me that my daughter and her family live in the heart of the Brandywine Valley. Not only do I get to enjoy the season, but I am able to do it with Tia, Adam, Zoe and Sophie. Hayrides and a real pumpkin patch (not a lot on T.O. Blvd) are part of the bargain. This year we visited Tyler Arboretum in Media, Pennsylvania, a 650-acre woodland preserve that may have been toward the end of its autumn leaf cycle, but was nevertheless still glorious. It’s winter now and memories from the accompanying photos of the trees and foliage as they transition from red and yellow flame to winter dormancy are to me quite ethereal. I hope you enjoy them as much as CONTINUED > Robin and I did when we experienced the beauty.

I called 3 services and they all told me that they were booked into January, sorry! My wife got hold of an arborist who didn't do tree removals, but he gave her a number and said: "Try them, they're good.” Hector Quintero, the owner, came up the next day and agreed it shouldn't wait. He was booked out, too, but said he would try to juggle things around. That was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Saturday, he had a 7 man crew with 3 climbers swarming the tree. They worked all day and didn't quit till the job was done. Hector will be my go to guy from now on. Greg T.—Santa Paula

The relaxing tone of Snow Orthodontics mirrors lead orthodontist Dr. Sharon Crowder herself, whose caring and confident demeanor puts patients instantly at ease. And it doesn’t take long to note that Dr. Crowder’s genuine kindness extends beyond the office to the community in which she lives and interacts with many of her patients. “I like to say I have thousands of children,” laughs Dr. Crowder, who has treated patients from 4 to 92 years old during her 30 years as an orthodontist in the communities of Oak Park and Agoura Hills. Getting to know her patients is one of the aspects she enjoys most about being an orthodontist, she says. “I get to see people every month, so we naturally form stronger bonds,” explains Dr. Crowder. “I still run into people I’ve known for 20 years,” she adds, smiling and calling goodbye to a young teen leaving the office after her appointment. “See you Sunday,” she says. The mutual affection is obvious as patient and doctor exchange words about their weekend. “Doing something that makes people happy” and “getting positive results,” in addition to forming relationships with patients, are the most rewarding parts of her career, she says. “It’s a fit with my personality,” says Dr. Crowder, who credits her mother, a schoolteacher in her hometown of Meadow Bridge, West Virginia (pop. 439), for encouraging her to pursue her dreams and become an orthodontist. “’You can do and you can be anything you want to be,’ my mom used to say to me,” recalls Dr. Crowder, who was one of just two women in a class of 50 students in dental school at West Virginia University and the fourth female to graduate from UCLA’s orthodontic program. Today, Dr. Crowder specializes in orthodontics for all ages. Braces for teens and adults, including the popular Invisalign system, TMJ 32

treatment, early interception treatment and advanced orthodontics services are available at Snow Orthodontics, where the experienced team of professionals ensure optimal results and patient comfort. IN GOOD HANDS With decades of experience as an orthodontist, Dr. Crowder is often approached for a second opinion and loves the challenge of finding the best way to treat an individual’s unique orthodontic issue. Known for her innovative approach to orthodontics, Dr. Crowder understands that improving a person’s smile goes beyond a change in their teeth and can affect their self-esteem, health and lives. Her patients know they are in capable hands under her competent care and expertise. “I've been going to Dr. Crowder for years and will not go anywhere else,” says patient Ron La Grassa. “Dr. Crowder is the best! She was referred to me by several friends. It’s been years since I've had my adult braces removed, but I continue go to Snow for all my check-ups/follow-ups. The staff is very professional and efficient too.” When she’s not helping people put their best smiles forward, Dr. Crowder enjoys golfing and spending time with her husband of 32 years, cooking, shopping, crafting with friends and taking part in church, community and charitable activities, including the nonprofit What Can We animal services organization. In line with her motto to “Be kind” and “Do what you love,” Dr. Crowder serves as a source of inspiration that makes the world a happier place—and that’s surely something to smile about. Get Motivated with Group Classes at the Bay Club ARTICLE ALICIA DOYLE

f fitness tops your list of priorities for the New Year, consider teaming up with others to boost your resolve to get and stay in shape. Offering 116 group workout classes per week, the Bay Club in Thousand Oaks is known for creating an atmosphere where members reach their fitness goals through motivation and encouragement from their peers. “Motivation’s the big part—it’s very difficult for almost everyone,” says Donna Connor, group fitness coordinator. “There are few people that can work out religiously on their own.” Such members tend to feel more motivated and comfortable in the Bay Club’s group classes, which include yoga, Pilates and spinning, as well as step aerobics and kickboxing. “I do small group personal training as well,” Connor says. In such a setting, participants are more likely to show up—and be motivated to perform their personal best. “If I was training you one-on-one, all you have to do is blow me off,” Connor hypothesizes. “But when there are five other people there, you’re not going to blow off the five other people.

ages and feeling that we are a team. You meet lots of nice people, have some lively interactions, a few laughs and get your workout done at the same time.” John, 63: “I've always found I push myself more and have more fun with an instructor...and others around me doing the same class. Also, having to arrive at a pre-scheduled class time forces me to go to class.” Karen, 62: “The group classes can be a great place to make new friends. People tend to bond when sweating together. The group can push you through hard parts because you want to keep up." Ellen, 69: “Time flies when I’m moving my body with all my friends.” Marisa, 35: “It’s very motivating to be surrounded by dedicated individuals who want to improve their overall health. I feel that an encouraging and supportive instructor helps individuals push themselves harder in workouts.”

For instance, if the others are doing 25 pushups, you’ll be more likely to do 25 push-ups,” she says. “So motivation is the biggest thing, but also there’s a sense of community and camaraderie and being a part of something.” In other group offerings, the Bay Club offers a fitness challenge in which the team that visits the club the most will receive a free lunch at the café, and the team captain will receive a cash award. “You’re never going to push yourself as much if you are doing it by yourself,” says Dominique Kabaker, membership director. For instance, “when you know that Suzy is waiting for you because she’s going to take a class with you, you will probably show up because you don’t want to let her down,” Kabaker says. “It’s been proven that you reach your goals faster when you are in a group situation because you motivate one another and then you’ll stick with it longer as well.” Kabaker experienced this motivation firsthand when she broke her finger and couldn’t CONTINUED > work out for three months.

POWER IN NUMBERS (CON TI N U ED)

When her finger was healed enough to start working out again, “I was able to do an exercise that I couldn’t do for months, and everybody was cheering me on. They’re like a family and they want you to do well, so it’s your little cheerleading committee.” The family-like atmosphere is consistent throughout the Bay Club, where the staff greets every member by name upon their arrival. “From the time you walk in and you talk to the front desk staff, they greet you by your first name, they are smiling, they are happy to see you,” Kabaker says. This makes way for friendships, she adds, which also motivates members to return and maintain their workouts. “Members create their own circle of friendship here and people don’t quit relationships, so they will stay with us longer because there is a relationship,” Kabaker explains. “So it’s like a second home and the people that come here are friends, so it’s a very unique place.” Kabaker emphasizes that the Bay Club is more than a gym. “It’s a whole experience,” she says. “Most gyms have equipment and classes and maybe sauna and steam rooms; you come in, do your workout, go home and you’re done. Here you have interaction with other people which is very unique to us; the hospitality we provide our members with is like nothing else,” Kabaker says. “Think of it as a first-class hotel combined with a health club. The only thing that we don’t have is the beds—we have everything else.” Don Laird, business office manager, equates the Bay Club with “hospitality fitness.” “We’re an all-in-one shop—the spa, the café, the kids club, over 100 group fitness classes—so here you get a combination of everything,” Laird says. For instance, the Pure Energy Café, open seven days a week, offers freshly made meals and daily specials. “They pretty much will make you anything you want,” Kabaker says. “I’m on a Paleo diet so I’m restricted, and every day they make me what I want to eat. If you’re gluten-free, Paleo—whatever dietary restrictions you might have—they will make it for you. It has five stars so people from all over come, especially on the weekends, just to have the food because it’s so fabulous.” On a recent day, menu items included chicken stir fry, goat cheese chicken salad and green spicy veggie enchiladas. “They do catering as well,” Kabaker says. “And they also do curbside delivery so you can drive your car here and they will bring you your food.” The In Touch Massage & Day Spa onsite provides a range of services, including oxygen infusion facials, cupping and bowen therapy, spray tanning and eyelash extensions. There are also steam rooms and saunas, as well as a heated pool. “We offer very high-end amenities in the locker rooms—we carry essential oil products which are all organic and originally from San Francisco,” Kabaker says. “And we have complimentary cold eucalyptus towels, which the members like a lot.” In other perks, the Bay Club has a complimentary concierge service on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. 38

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2017

“Members create their own circle of friendship here and people don’t quit relationships, so they will stay with us longer because there is a relationship,” Kabaker explains. “So it’s like a second home and the people that come here are friends, so it’s a very unique place.”

“So we have an attendant that will provide you with hair ties, razors, a flat iron,” Kabaker says. “If you need your shoes to be shined, if you need your clothes to be pressed, if you need a button to be sewn—they do all of that.” There’s also a kids club that’s open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. “It’s great for the parents to know that their kids are going to be in a nurturing environment that is safe and fun while they are working out or going to the spa or meeting their friends for lunch at the cafe,” Kabaker explains. The Bay Club is also dedicated to charitable work in the community, in line with its mission statement. This past Thanksgiving, for instance, the club was a food collection site for the needy. “We’re very socially conscious, so we do a lot of charity fundraisers here,” Kabaker adds. For more information, call 805.778.0888 or visit BayClubs.com/ThousandOaks. The Bay Club is located at 2400 Willow Road in Thousand Oaks.

FINANCIAL HEALTH ADDS TO

Peace of Mind

F

inancial health is a key part of complete wellness, so putting your estate in order is essential for true peace of mind. One often overlooked aspect of a balanced estate is appointing a trustee to take care of your affairs in case you ever need them to. Undoubtedly, when it comes to picking the right fiduciary/trustee, it’s important to get it right. The Law Office of Raymond L. Stuehrmann is an experienced and dedicated firm with a focus on helping clients address all aspects of estate planning. With a reputation for thoroughness and providing practical solutions to avoid contention in estate administration, Ray Stuehrmann takes the time to ask in-depth questions and ensure he understands a client’s needs before recommending a course of action. Here he addresses some common questions about how to choose the right trustee for your estate.

Q. What is the role of a fiduciary/trustee?

A. The trustee is the person who administers the property when the trustor, who is the original owner, can no longer do so. Usually, we are talking about the “successor trustee,” who takes over when the trustor can no longer function as the initial trustee. I’ll use “trustee” to refer to the successor trustee. On the death of the trustor, the trustee takes possession of the assets, pays bills and taxes and ultimately distributes the assets according to the principal’s instructions as spelled out in the trust. If the trustee takes over during the trustor’s lifetime, the trustee steps up to the plate and administers the trustor’s financial affairs.

Q. What makes a good trustee?

A. Well, let’s start with that alternate word, “Fiduciary.” It’s based on the Latin word “fides,” which means “faith.” A trustee is someone you can place your faith, or trust, in, someone you can rely on to carry out your wishes faithfully and not bend to other people’s suggestions. You want them to carry out your intentions as expressed in the trust. For example, if you want to leave your jewelry to granddaughter Kate, the trustee does not have the discretion to give a piece to granddaughter Irene, even if Irene’s mother insists that Grandma always said Irene could have it. The trustee should have some financial savvy so they won’t be overwhelmed by collecting assets, selling real property and maintaining appropriate bank records and ledgers to keep track of all transactions. The trustee should 40

Ray Steuhrmann

know when it’s time to ask for help, whether it’s with bookkeeping or professional help with legal or accounting issues. This is no time for winging it, especially when it comes to taxes.

Q. What are the main concerns?

A. In addition to the qualities just mentioned, you should select a trustee who will be available at the time for him or her to take over. It’s best to nominate someone geographically close enough so that they can actively participate in going to the bank to collect accounts, for example. A local person can visually inspect real estate and assist in determining appropriate work to make a house easily marketable without overdoing it. You should also consider the personal situation of your intended trustee. If they have a young family and a full work load, will they be able to devote the time necessary to administer your affairs? At the other end of the age spectrum, will they be healthy enough to take care of the estate affairs? Naming your parents might make sense when you’re young and they’re still middle-aged, but what about when they need more attention than your kids do? In considering whether to appoint multiple trustees, please consider logistics. California law requires trustees to act together. If you have more than one, will they agree with each other, or will they become hopelessly deadlocked? Even if they agree, how quickly can they get together to act on anything?

Q. Isn’t it best to appoint a family member as a trustee?

A. In many instances, this works. But analyze the situation carefully. If they are bickering now, they will bicker later. No matter what the trustee does, one of the beneficiaries objects. This occurs with blended families; a child by one parent is trustee and the children of the other parent fight every decision, but it can also happen in a single-marriage family where there is a history of ill-will between siblings. If there is any question of a family feud in such a situation, the trustor could still appoint a relative who would be less contentious, such as a cousin of the beneficiaries, especially if the cousin has

a financial background. Reciting in the trust that the trustor has selected Cousin Renee because of her CPA background makes the decision look less like a slap in the face to the trustor’s children.

Q. What type of legal paperwork must be filed to appoint a trustee?

A. The trustor selects the successor trustee in the trust itself. I strongly recommend nominating at least two successor trustees, in case the first for some reason fails to qualify. In most cases, the trustor and usually the spouse are the initial trustees. When they no longer are serving, the successor trustee takes their place. The successor trustee will need a Certification of Trust to establish his or her authority. It’s a good thing to execute this along with the trust for continuity, instead of trying to create one at the last minute. If real estate is involved, an affidavit of death of trustee must be filed, as well as certain paperwork with the County Assessor. Filing with the Superior Court is not necessary, unless none of the named successor trustees can serve. Avoiding court proceedings is one of the main, if not the main, reason for establishing a trust in California.

Q. What are some common mistakes when selecting a trustee?

A. The biggest mistake is appointing someone who is clueless about their responsibilities. This is the person who will look out for his or her own good first and will disregard the trust provisions, or interpret them in a twisted way to exclude other beneficiaries. The appellate decisions are full of instances of people who had no business being near a checkbook. It’s your money and your family; don’t get sweet-talked into letting a so-so relative manage your affairs! Another mistake is to think that by making all of your children trustees, you’ll force them to get along. You’ll force them into a stalemate, and the Court will end up removing them all and appointing a third party. For more information about selecting a trustee and estate planning, contact The Law Office of Raymond L. Stuehrmann at 805.230.1288. January 2017 | Conejo Valley Lifestyle

Lighten Up & Lose Inches with Westlake Body Contouring LOSE FAT AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT

ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY BEN MALKIN

W

hat better way to learn about a service than trying it out firsthand? That’s what I thought when I agreed to Dr. Dianne Lalena Sandberg’s suggestion to experience a session before writing about Westlake Body Contouring. I mean, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to lose inches using a 100% all-natural, noninvasive fat reduction device? The Contour Light used at Westlake Body Contouring employs 635 NM LED light therapy to sculpt your body and eliminate subcutaneous fat. Although I was definitely intrigued and interested in losing fat and inches without working up a sweat for hours, I was also a bit hesitant— if not somewhat fearful—about the procedure. Thankfully, Dr. Dianne thoroughly answered all my questions about the technology and what to expect during the procedure. Her knowledge, experience and expertise in the field reassured me that I was in good hands and in for a real treat. Our conversation covered the following:

Q. How does it work?

A. The Contour Light was originally researched by NASA to heal wounds before it was discovered that the technology also liquefies fat and opens fat cells, allowing fat to exit and shrink the cells. Fat burning is accelerated, metabolism speeds up and fat is flushed through the lymphatic system into the liver to be broken down and eliminated from the body. In addition, collagen and elastin are increased, tightening skin and creating a slimmer appearance. 46

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2017

Q. Will it hurt? (This was my main concern!) A. In preparation for the light treatment, soft lightweight pads embedded with hundreds of LED lights are positioned on top and under the areas being treated. Once positioned, you simply lay down on a comfortable bed listening to soothing music with the lights low for about 25 minutes. I honestly drifted off… the opposite of hurt, this was pure bliss and relaxation time.

Q. Is there any down time or side effects?

A. There were no side effects from the light; the only side effect I felt was a little itching after a 10-minute session standing on a vibrating plate designed to shake the liquefied fat into the lymphatic system following the relaxing light treatment. Thankfully, the itching didn’t last long at all, but the fat-burning effects can continue for hours after the treatment.

Q. How many inches will I lose?

A. This varies by individual, with the basic idea that the more inches you have to lose, the more you can expect to lose during each session. In my case, I lost 6 inches total throughout the body. Not bad for relaxing on a bed and basically napping for 25 minutes! Dr. Dianne explains that treatments are customized based on an individual’s goals. Professional athletes, body builders, those with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and anybody wanting to lose inches and tighten their skin benefit from the treatment.

Q. Are the results instant? A. Yes! You’re measured pre- and post-treatment, so you can see the results right away. Dr. Dianne says many clients report continued results, even hours after the treatment.

Q. How does Westlake Body Contouring stand apart from other businesses?

A. Using the only device on the market that can actually treat large surface areas on the body, Westlake Body Contouring’s patented reflective coating on the pads increases the light energy and redirects it back into the tissue 10x more than any device on the market. No other device on the market has this capability or power. With a background as a professional dancer and a chiropractor, Dr. Dianne was so excited about using this NASA-researched technology to help people, she decided to come out of retirement and open Westlake Body Contouring. Since initially opening the business, she has expanded and provided the opportunity for hundreds of people to experience the life-changing body-sculpting technology. “I enjoy seeing the look on my patients’ faces when they have just lost 3-6 inches on their first treatment,” says Dr. Dianne. “Finally, they see instant gratification and it’s a fabulous kick start for them.” To learn more, call 818.852.7352 or visit WestlakeBodyContouring.com. Westlake Body Contouring is located in the Mediterranea 1 Building, 30423 Canwood Street, Suite #205, in Agoura Hills.

If you feel like you have tried “everything,” but nothing has really worked to help your health issues, consider these three easy solutions to ease what ails you. More energy, mental clarity, better sleep, less pain and increased happiness and motivation is in store for you when you implement the following solutions into your New Year’s resolutions. SIMPLE SOLUTION 1: EAT ORGANIC, NON-GMO, NUTRIENT-DENSE FOODS

Many people ask me if a healthy diet alone supplies enough vitamins and minerals. Eating healthy food is always advised, but is often easier said than done. Some people find it difficult to eat six to nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily and three well-balanced meals and healthy snacks each day. Nutritional imbalances may even cause weight loss resistance! Simply put, Americans have been overfed and undernourished for a very long time. In fact, most obese children and 48

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2017

adults are actually malnourished. While that might sound contradictory, an abundance of calories does not necessarily deliver the right nutrients for your body. The very opposite is true: Overeating can create nutritional deficiencies. It’s possible to consume too many calories and insufficient nutrients. And guess what? You need vitamins and minerals to process all those empty calories. Low nutrients lead to a poorly functioning metabolism. Even when we do our best to eat well, we are faced with processed, GMO foods, preservatives, artificial flavorings labeled “natural,” and exposure to herbicides and pesticides. Eating organic meats, fruits, vegetables and dairy products can help, but sadly, 20% of organic foods may also contain herbicides and pesticides due to cross-contamination. Our factory farm-raised meats come loaded with hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, preservatives like nitrates and higher levels of inflammatory omega-6 fats. Our soil conditions have also changed. Nutrient losses in some foods are up 98.5%. In 1914, an apple contained almost half the minimum daily requirement of iron, but today, it takes 26 apples to get the same amount of iron, according to Bernard Jensen’s Empty Harvest. In addition, our digestive tract may be compromised by low stomach acid. By age 50, 50% of people do not have enough stomach acid. Perhaps you are taking an antacid. Acid is in the stomach for a reason. First, to kill off the bacteria, viruses and parasites we eat every day, and secondly, to begin to digest our food. Without acid, we are more at risk for intestinal infections and malabsorption of nutrients.

Neck Pain • Headaches • Low Back Pain Insomnia • Anxiety • Hormone Imbalance Digestion Issues

Research shows that the use of antacids creates nutrient deficiencies and can lead to chronic illnesses. This leads to fatigue and brain fog. Consider adding apple cider vinegar or betaine HCL to your meals. SIMPLE SOLUTION 2: GET TESTED FOR FOOD SENSITIVITIES & NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES

Most of my patients have documented IgG food sensitivities and/or gluten sensitivity when tested using Cyrex labs. I recommend this lab (I do not get paid by them), in contrast to some labs that show results that are false negatives and inaccurate. Specialty labs can determine a digestive issue or hidden GI infection. Be sure to have your vitamin D levels tested and supplement accordingly. “Suboptimal intake of some vitamins is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population. Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone,” state Harvard Medical School researchers. Specialty tests are the foundation to personalized health, followed by treatment with effective natural therapies.

SIMPLE SOLUTION 3: USE NUTRIENT IV THERAPY

When you simply cannot afford to be sick or lack energy, schedule IV therapy. While healthy lifestyles are the cornerstone of health, nothing beats the power of nutrient IV therapy (Myers Cocktails) used to support the healing of many chronic illnesses and common acute infections. IV therapy combines magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, vitamin C and other nutrients to safely and effectively treat a variety of chronic conditions, including depression, fibromyalgia and digestive tract issues. Delivered intravenously, the nutrients bypass the digestive tract, bathing the body in nutrients. Plus, IV treatment works faster and delivers concentrations of nutrients that are impossible to obtain from oral doses. Energy, great health and happiness result when you follow these three simple solutions. Dr. Sharon Norling practices Advanced Functional Medicine in Westlake Village. Legal Compass

Expert Advice for Avoiding Common Pitfalls of Divorce

ARTICLE KATHY COSTAS, CDFA®

W

hen divorce is imminent, expert help can ensure the best possible outcome. Obtaining advice and guidance from a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® can assist in navigating the often overwhelming divorce process. With years of experience working with clients in our Divorce Financial Planning practice, we have seen the best, the worst and everything in between in divorces. By sharing our knowledge and resources with anyone contemplating or navigating divorce, we aim to help people avoid common mistakes and suffering the consequences. As most people do not research or study divorce unless it becomes a part of their reality, we have made it our job to provide relevant information to help clients feel empowered and gain clarity throughout the process. Here we address some of the most common questions regarding divorce.

Q: Where do I start? A: First, assemble your team. This includes legal representation, a trusted financial advisor with divorce financial planning experience and a therapist. Choose these experts carefully and make sure they are a good fit for you and your situation. Find out if you need a litigator or collaborative attorney or if you can use a mediator. There are different ways to divorce, depending on your situation. Whoever you choose should match your and your ex’s personalities and the level of animosity or cooperation between the two of you. Work with a financial advisor to set a “divorce budget” that includes expected legal costs. This will help you stay focused on the big picture and allow you to see the process as more of a business transaction. At the very beginning, you should both meet with a therapist to set communication ground rules concerning children. The therapist will advise you about what you can and cannot discuss around them and how to talk about each other to the children. Have your team members provide an action plan, timeline, expected costs and address a few “what if ” questions as well. You will work better together if you set expectations upfront. Changes often occur during the process, but starting on the same page and communicating are keys to success. 50

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2017

Q: What kind of information will I need? A: Gather your financial records from the past three years, including anything with a dollar sign attached: bank statements, brokerage statements, pay stubs, tax returns, insurance policies, retirement plan (401K) statements, property titles and valuations if available, mortgage statements, and any other information about anything you owe or own together or separately.

Q: What general advice can you offer? A: Divorce is a marathon, not a sprint. Build a strong support team and grab those cups of water along the way. Listen to your team and rely on their expertise rather than the opinions of friends and family. Count on your paid experts for advice and look to your friends and family for love and emotional support. Work with your financial advisor to set your financial settlement goals at the beginning of the process and ensure you have an action plan in place. This includes deciding exactly what you want or need in terms of support or assets. Proceeds from a home sale are very different from rights to half of a pension plan or retirement account, even if the dollar amounts are the same. Work with your advisor to create a few “what if” scenarios based on long-term projections so you are prepared during any negotiations to counter an offer. Do this ahead of time when you are calm and thinking clearly, not in the midst of a highly charged meeting when you might be forced to make decisions under duress or without the chance to determine the real value of what is being proposed. California is a no-fault, community property state. That means it’s not illegal to be a cheater or nasty person. This also means you most likely won’t get that day in court where the judge says your spouse is rotten and therefore you get everything. Instead, focus your energy on creating financial security for the future and getting through the process with your mental and physical well-being intact. That’s the definition of the “winner.” Finally, know there is light at the end of the tunnel! Rely on your legal and financial experts and take care of yourself physically and emotionally during the process. You will emerge stronger, wiser, more confident and ready to begin the next phase of your life. For more information, contact FMB Wealth Management at 805.446.4494 or visit FMBWealth.com.

Financial Buzz

Excel EXCEL with

ARTICLE ROCKY MILLS

M

ost people dream in color. Some dream in black and white. I dream in spreadsheets… I use spreadsheets all the time. Why do something by hand that a computer can do quicker, more accurately and allow you to vary the inputs to see the effect on the results? Here are a few gems—some functions, some operators and some formatting—that can make your spreadsheets hum.

FUNCTIONS

NOW Puts in the current date and/or time. YEARFRAC Calculates the number of years between two dates. IF If a condition you establish is true, Excel makes one calculation; if it’s false, it makes a different calculation. Perfect for determining, say, the capital gains tax on a stock sale: if the holding period is more than a year, multiply by the long-term capital gains rate; if it’s under a year, multiply by the short-term rate. COUNTIF It counts up a group of cells, but only includes those cells that meet the condition(s) you set. So let’s say you have a column of donors, and next to it a column indicating if you’ve contacted them recently. COUNTIF can quickly count up how many donors still need to been reached. VLOOKUP Looks up a value on a table for a given input. For example, for any given income level, Excel could look up the income tax rate. XIRR Calculates the compounded annual rate of return for an investment. It uses the date and amount of each cash flow: the initial investment amount, any additional payments into or out of the investment, and the final value. ROUND Rounds an answer up or down to the number of desired digits. SUMPRODUCT Multiplies entries in two columns and then adds up the answers. Great for calculating weighted average returns, where one column has the individual investment returns, and the other columns shows the percentage that each investment is of the total account.

OPERATORS (IN FORMULAS)

^ “Raise to the power.” Let’s say you wanted to square whatever’s in cell H3, you’d write: =H3^2. By the way, the square root of whatever’s in H3 would be: =H3^(1/2). & Joins the text in different cells. So, if cell A1 has “super” in it and cell A2 has “girl” in it, then in cell A3 you could write “=A1&A2” to get “supergirl.” Great for merging, say, first name and last name. >= Greater than or equal to (<= would be just the opposite). $ Freezes a cell you reference in a formula. Without the $, when you copy or drag the formula, the cell reference changes, too. FORMATTING

Gridlines: Eliminate them (View tab; uncheck Gridlines). Then put in just the lines you want using Borders. Much cleaner. Conditional: The value of a cell will determine its font, text color, background color, etc. Great for easily differentiating results. Labeled number: Example: instead of just showing the number “12,” you can add some clarity and have the number show as, say, “12 pounds.” But this is not text; you can still do other things to the 12 (like add or multiply). In Format, choose Custom and, in this example, type: ## “pounds” (where ## displays the 2-digit number and the text you choose is in quotes). My dad would always say: Excel in everything you do. I got close, Dad—I do everything in Excel… Robert A. “Rocky” Mills is a Financial Advisor with the Global Wealth Management Division of Morgan Stanley in Westlake Village. “Laughter Parting Thoughts

is the Best Medicine

ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

S

ometimes in our lives we forget that we have our own healing powers. If we can all remember to take life a little easier every day, we can utilize these healing powers. Try using your laughter as vitamins like some of us take our prescribed medicines. Imagine that every time you laugh you get healthier, and that it is always best to laugh your way to success. I remember my aunt used to tell me when we went through rough times to take a “So What?” pill. I’ve learned that sometimes we should learn to let certain situations go and move on in a positive direction. But don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about the serious situations that might be life altering in our lives. When life gets tough, look the problem in the face so you can deal with it right then and there, and then immediately look for the next place you can find happiness and laughter in your life. Here are some great rituals to add to your New Year regimen: 58

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2017

• Create a self-love, turn off and unplug. • Close your eyes and look inside. • Build a support team. We all need help to be able to delegate more, and that comes with being able to trust others. • Clean the things that are not serving you out of your closet and your life. The more blocks we can clear, the more we can live big. • Don’t chase what has already happened. I tell everyone to try new things, but you should remember to also keep doing the things that you are good at because it helps to make the best version of you. Learn where your happy place is that brings you to your Zen, and learn to connect with yourself. When you truly love yourself, you can truly love others as well. Bring on the New Year by being your own best friend, and sticking to me, myself and I.

I would like to share a meaningful saying my grandmother handed down to my mother: “You squander health in search of wealth, you toil and scheme and save. You squander wealth in search of health and only find the grave. Learn to honor your health, because without that we have nothing.” Wishing you all the best New Year with lots of success, good health and happiness! Kim Pagano is brought to you by the awardwinning talk radio station AM 1590 KVTA. She brings you the Brighter Side of the 805, Saturdays from 6 to 8 a.m., reminding us how important it is to "Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good." Listen to the Kim Pagano Show at your leisure by subscribing to her podcast: ITunes/The Kim Pagano Show. Kim is a hair therapist in Westlake, a motivational speaker, a mother and so much more.
