Life is full of important moments. With our modern banking solutions, managing your finances becomes effortless and efficient. So you can focus on the moments that matter most.

Honoring the Gentlemen of Columbia

Welcome to our June Gentlemen’s Issue, a nod to the men who lead, build, and show up every day for the people around them. With Father’s Day this month, it’s also a time to reflect on the impact those men have had on our lives, through their work, their example, and the standards they set.

In this issue, we highlight three stories that each represent that mindset in different ways. From a deeper look at men’s health with Dr. Jeremy Maxwell, to a thoughtfully designed space built by Garrett Burns that brings people together, to a local staple like Binghams that has served Columbia with consistency and care for over four decades, each story is rooted in intention.

What stands out most is not just what these men do, but how they do it. It’s a commitment to quality, to growth, and to doing things the right way, even when it takes more time and effort.

As we celebrate this month, we are reminded of the importance of showing up for our health, our families, and our community. We are grateful for the local businesses and individuals who continue to shape Columbia into the place we are proud to call home.

Happy Father’s Day to all of the men who lead by example. Warmly,

@COLUMBIACITYLIFESTYLE

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

Men! Stop Waiting Till You Break

A conversation with Dr. Jeremy Maxwell, Chiropractor, The Wellness Way–Columbia

STOP WAITING UNTIL YOU BREAK

Most men don’t wake up one day and suddenly fall apart.

It’s gradual. Subtle. Easy to ignore.

You start waking up more tired. You don’t recover like you used to. The weight creeps up. Your drive mentally, physically, even in your relationships starts to fade. But you push through. You tell yourself it’s normal.

Until one day, you realize you’re not performing like you should—in your career, at home, or in your own body. And by then? This didn’t start recently. It’s been building for years.

“We built this for guys who are tired of being told they’re ‘fine’ when they know they’re not.”

THIS ISN’T MEDICAL CARE, THIS IS HEALTH RESTORATION

Most systems are built to manage symptoms or treating disease.

You feel off, you get tested, you’re told you’re “normal”, maybe you get something to help you cope.

But coping isn’t the same as functioning.

At The Wellness Way, we look at your body differently. Symptoms aren’t problems they’re signals.

Your body is adapting to stress. It’s trying to survive.

Our job is to remove the stressors so your body can get back to performing.

“If you have to rely on something external to override how your body is expressing stress, that’s management not restoration.”

WE DON’T GUESS. WE TEST.

You’ve probably been told your labs are “normal.” But you don’t feel normal.

That’s because most testing is designed to catch disease not dysfunction.

At The Wellness Way, we go deeper. We look at patterns, not just numbers. We look at how your body is functioning—not just whether it’s failing.

Because most men don’t have a disease problem. They have a performance problem.

“Most guys are walking around with dysfunction, not disease.”

THE REAL PROBLEM: YOUR BODY IS NOT BROKEN IT’S OVERLOADED AND STRESSED

Your body isn’t failing it’s adapting.

But it can only adapt for so long.

At The Wellness Way, we break stress into three categories:

Thoughts. Toxins. Trauma.

Mental stress. Chemical stress. Physical stress.

When those stack up and they always do your body shifts into survival mode.

And in survival mode, your body stops prioritizing performance.

Energy drops. Hormones shift. Recovery slows.

“When the body stays in stress mode, it doesn’t repair or perform.”

THE SWISS WATCH PRINCIPLE: EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Nothing in your body works in isolation. Your hormones affect your energy. Your gut affects your hormones. Your nervous system controls all of it.

So when something feels off it’s rarely just one thing.

At The Wellness Way, we look at the whole system.

Because if you don’t fix the system, you don’t fix the problem.

“Most men aren’t broken, they’re overloaded.

Stress, toxins, trauma, and chronic adaptation silently rob energy, hormones, and performance. True health isn’t found in managing symptoms, but in removing the stressors and restoring the body’s God-designed ability to heal and function.”

- Dr. Jeremy Maxwell

FIREMAN VS. CARPENTER

Emergency care is necessary but it’s not enough.

Putting out fires doesn’t rebuild your body.

Most men live in a cycle of breakdown, quick fix, back to breakdown.

We break that cycle. We rebuild the system so your body can actually sustain performance.

THE SILENT DECLINE

This is how it shows up: Fatigue that doesn’t go away.

Hormones that feel off.

Digestion that isn’t right.

Sleep that never feels deep.

Physical performance and sexual wellness, declining.

It’s slow. It’s quiet. And most men accept it.

But it’s not normal, it’s a warning sign.

SOFTWAVE THERAPY

When your system is under stress, healing slows down.

SoftWave Therapy helps activate your body’s natural repair processes.

It doesn’t override your body—it supports it.

And when your body gets the right support, it starts doing what it was designed to do.

LET’S TALK ABOUT ED

ED is one of the clearest signals that your system isn’t functioning right.

It’s not just about sexual health-it’s about circulatory and nervous systems, hormones, and metabolic health. When something is off in your systems, your body reflects it.

When something is off in the system, performance reflects it. Ignoring it doesn’t fix it. Understanding it does.

HORMONES

When hormones drop, everything changes. Your drive. Your focus. Your strength. Your sleep. And most men think it’s just age.

But in many cases, it’s not age—it’s stress and dysfunction.

Fix the system, and hormones often follow.

CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS

Your nervous system coordinates the systems. If it’s under stress, nothing works right.

Chiropractic care isn’t just about pain—it’s about restoring communication within your body so it can function and adapt the way it’s supposed to.

“When the nervous system improves, everything else has a chance to improve.”The Mindset Shift

Waiting is the biggest mistake men make.

Waiting until it’s worse.

Waiting until it affects everything.

Waiting until they feel like they’ve lost control.

But every year you wait is a year of lost performance. And you don’t get that time back.

“Prevention is intentional.”

WHAT YOU CAN START DOING TODAY

If you’re serious about changing how you feel, you don’t need to wait. You can start shifting your body out of stress mode right now.

1. Take Control of Your Sleep

Your body repairs when you sleep. If your sleep is poor, everything else will struggle.

Go to bed at a consistent time. Get off screens earlier. Create a dark, cool environment. This is non-negotiable.

2. Clean Up What You Put In Your Body (Toxins)

What you eat either fuels your body or stresses it.

Focus on real food quality protein, healthy fats, and whole ingredients. Reduce processed foods, sugars, and chemical exposures wherever possible.

3. Move Your Body with Purpose (Trauma) Your body is designed to move but it also needs proper structure. Exercise, stretch, and address imbalances before they become injuries.

4. Control Mental Load (Thoughts)

Stress isn’t just physical it’s mental. If your mind never shuts off, your body never recovers. Build in time to reset whether that’s walking, breathing, or stepping away from constant stimulation.

5. Stop Ignoring the Signals

Fatigue, low libido, poor sleep, ED these are not random. They are your body asking for change.

THE NEXT STEP: GET EVALUATED

At some point, lifestyle alone isn’t enough because you don’t know exactly what your body is dealing with.

That’s where we come in.

At The Wellness Way, we don’t guess we run a full evaluation to understand what’s actually going on in your body.

We look at:

• Hormones

• Inflammation

• Gut health

• Metabolic function

• Nervous system stress

• Structural imbalances

We connect the dots so you can finally understand why you feel the way you do.

And more importantly we build a plan to fix it.

This isn’t about managing symptoms.

This is about restoring how your body works.

FINAL WORD

You’re not broken.

You’re overloaded.

And once you remove the stress and support the system… Your body can do what it was designed to do.

The only question is how much longer are you going to wait?

A M AN CAVE PROJECT REVEALS BURNS’ APPROACH TO BUILDING SPACES PEOPLE LOVE

TO LAST BUILT

In Columbia’s tight-knit community, trust is built through relationships, consistency, and quality work. For Garrett Burns, founder of Built By Burns, that foundation was first forged alongside his father on job sites that still stand strong today and strengthened through 10 years at Shindler Homes alongside mentor Phillip Shindler. Now building his own legacy, Burns approaches every project with a guiding question: If it were my home, what would I do?

Burns’s latest showcase project, a sophisticated family man cave, reflects his approach to designing around real life. Rather than a dark, traditional basement, he set out to create a space that feels open, functional, and welcoming for both family and friends. The goal was to build something that could be used every day, not just occasionally.

The result brings together both style and everyday use. A sleek wet bar anchors the entertainment area, while dedicated workout equipment creates a private space to train. The layout flows into a full basketball court and a professional batting cage, turning what could have been unused space into something completely unique. A private bathroom with a tiled shower completes the space, making it easy to spend extended time there without returning to the main house.

“We designed this space to satisfy personal needs while creating a friend and family atmosphere that invites entertaining,” Burns explains. Every element, from lighting to layout, was chosen to make the space easy to use and enjoyable to spend time in.

To make the space comfortable year-round, the project includes two separate HVAC systems with heat pumps. That level of planning ensures the space performs just as well as it looks, no matter the season.

For Burns, a great man cave starts with comfort and purpose. It should be a place where you can unwind, spend time with friends, and actually use the space. Comfortable seating, a stocked bar, quality entertainment, and personal details like art or memorabilia help bring it all together, finished with rich wood details and darker tones that give the space a more grounded, masculine feel.

At the end of the day, the goal is simple. Create a space that people want to be in. One that feels just as natural for a quiet night as it does for hosting friends and family.

The foundation of Burns’s philosophy runs deeper than concrete and steel. Growing up swinging hammers with his dad, he learned early that true craftsmanship isn’t just about building. It is about creating spaces that hold up over time and still feel just as solid years later.

“It’s extremely humbling to drive by projects I built with my dad over 20 years ago that are still standing today,” Burns says. That perspective continues to shape how he approaches every project. Details matter, not just in how something looks on day one, but in how it performs years down the road.

“Built to Last. Built for You.” is more than a tagline. It is a standard he holds himself to on every job. As a boutique builder, Burns stays directly involved from start to finish. Clients are not handed off between departments or left wondering who to call. Instead, they work with him throughout the entire process, building trust along the way.

Understanding how clients actually live is a key part of that experience. During the planning phase, Burns takes time to learn about daily routines, habits, and long-term goals. How they cook, entertain, and move through their home all play a role in the final design.

That approach leads to spaces that feel natural and easy to live in. Layouts are built around real use, not just appearance. Every decision is made with function in mind, ensuring the home works the way it should from day one.

Just as important is how the process feels for the homeowner. Renovations can be disruptive, but Burns and his team prioritize keeping job sites clean, organized, and livable. Areas are sealed off when needed, and the site is cleaned daily so clients can remain comfortable and involved.

For Built By Burns, high-end design and long-term durability go hand in hand. Quality is not treated as an upgrade. It is the baseline. “I’ve always directly correlated highend design with durability and long-term

functionality,” Burns says. That mindset carries through every decision, from materials to construction methods.

Energy efficiency and performance are also central to the way he builds. With advanced insulation, air sealing, efficient HVAC systems, and smart lighting, each project is designed to perform long after construction is complete. These features help reduce monthly costs while improving comfort, air quality, and overall home value.

“A truly great home should work for you, not cost you forever,” Burns explains. It is a simple idea, but one that reflects a long-term mindset. Homes should not become burdens. They should support the people living in them.

After more than 25 years in the industry, Burns continues to be motivated by the opportunity to bring new ideas to life. Design trends evolve, building methods improve, and each project presents a chance to create something unique.

What stands out most, though, is what happens after the project is finished. Many clients stay in touch long after construction ends, sharing photos, inviting him back, and continuing the relationship. Over time, those connections often turn into friendships.

Outside of work, Burns spends as much time as possible with his three children. Whether coaching games, attending events, or simply being present, family remains at the center of everything he does.

It is that same mindset he brings into his work. Thoughtful, consistent, and built with intention. At the end of the day, it is not just about what gets built. It is about creating spaces people truly live in and enjoy for years to come.

BINGHAMS: FOUR DECADES OF STYLE

A COLUMBIA STAPLE DELIVERING TIMELESS STYLE AND SERVICE

Since 1981, Binghams Traditional Clothing has been a staple in Columbia’s retail scene. What began as a small shop on South Ninth Street has grown into a downtown institution, now located at Ninth and Broadway. While the store has evolved over the years, its mission has remained the same: provide the best quality menswear at competitive prices with exceptional personal service. In an era dominated by online shopping and large retailers, Binghams continues to stand out by offering something increasingly rare, a genuine, relationship-driven shopping experience that keeps customers coming back.

The secret to Binghams’ longevity is not just the clothing, it is a commitment to never settling. The team is constantly working to keep the store fresh while maintaining the standards that built its reputation. From product selection to customer service, every detail is intentional. Their focus remains consistent, finding the best quality, the right price points, and delivering a level of service that keeps customers returning year after year.

That commitment is especially evident in the in-store experience. While customers can shop anywhere in the world online, Binghams offers something that cannot be replicated on a screen. The ability to see collections in person, feel the fabrics, and try on pieces creates a more meaningful connection to what you are buying. The team encourages customers to take their time, ask questions, and enjoy the process, making each visit feel personal rather than transactional.

The atmosphere reflects that same philosophy. Guests are welcomed with a relaxed, no-pressure environment where they can browse at their own pace. Whether it is grabbing a cold beverage, catching a game on the TV, or simply exploring the store, Binghams is designed to feel approachable and comfortable. It is this balance of professionalism and hospitality that continues to set the store apart.

Behind the scenes, the curation process is just as thoughtful. Each brand and product is selected through a detailed review that considers both function and style. Some decisions are driven by filling a specific price point, while others focus on bringing new trends and fresh perspectives to Columbia. Every

addition is made with the customer in mind, ensuring the selection remains both relevant and timeless. Since relocating to its Broadway location in 1988, Binghams has continued to build on its original foundation. Core brands remain, while new lines are introduced to keep the store current. Beyond product, services like custom fitting, gift wrapping, and delivery reinforce the store’s commitment to going the extra mile.

Community involvement also plays a key role in the brand’s identity. Staying connected to Columbia has always been a priority, allowing the team to better understand and serve their customers.

Looking ahead, Binghams shows no signs of slowing down. With new initiatives planned and upcoming collections already in development, the focus remains on continuing to elevate the customer experience. As they begin planning for future seasons, including Spring 2027, their goal stays the same: bring better products, deliver exceptional service, and continue serving the Columbia community for years to come.

Pickle In A

PICKLE-BRINED CHICKEN WINGS SOAR TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE.

I’ve spent years searching for the perfect wing flavor, never quite satisfied, until I heard a podcast suggestion: brining chicken wings in pickle juice. It sounded strange at first, but it yields incredibly tender and flavorful wings! Since then, I save pickle juice from every jar I buy just to recreate these beloved wings. If I run out of pickle juice, olive juice works too. I air fry mine, but if you don’t have an air fryer, cook them as you normally would. Don’t forget to toss them in a buttery dill sauce and try the Alabama white BBQ sauce for an extra layer of goodness!

Pickle Juice Brined Wings

INGREDIENTS

• 2 pounds chicken wings (flats and drumettes)

• Pickle juice - enough to cover wings

• 1 – 2 teaspoons garlic salt

• ¼ teaspoon pepper

• 6 tablespoons butter

• A few dashes of hot sauce

• 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place chicken wings in a non-reactive container and pour pickle juice over chicken wings until completely covered.

2. Place it in the fridge and let it marinate, covered, for at least 8 hours.

3. Drain wings, discard pickle juice, and completely pat wings dry.

4. Put dried wings in a bowl and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper. Mix well.

5. Place wings in an air fryer basket, being careful not to crowd. Cook at 400 degrees for 28 minutes, turning every 8 minutes until crispy. If you don’t have an air fryer, bake them in the oven for 35 - 40 minutes at 400 degrees, flipping halfway through.

6. Melt the butter and add a few splashes of hot sauce of your choice and mix in a bowl. Add wings and completely cover with butter mixture. Sprinkle with fresh dill and toss a few times, and serve with my white barbeque sauce.

Alabama White BBQ Sauce

INGREDIENTS

• 1 ½ cups mayonnaise (I prefer Duke’s)

• ¼ cup water

• ¼ cup white wine vinegar

• 1 tablespoon pepper, coarsely ground

• 1 tablespoon Creole mustard

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon sugar

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish

INSTRUCTIONS

Whisk all ingredients together until blended. Dip your pickle juicebrined wings in this sauce and taste the joy!  Store in the refrigerator for 1 - 2 weeks.
