Summer is here, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to explore—whether that means getting outside, discovering a new local business, or simply trying something different. Our July “Explore” issue is all about embracing adventure in its many forms, and we’re excited to highlight the people, places, and passions that make MidMissouri such a vibrant place to call home.
This month, we invite you to rediscover the natural beauty right in our backyard. Columbia’s parks and trails offer something for everyone—from hiking the scenic 4.8-mile Bear Creek Trail at Cosmo Park and rock climbing at Capen Park to reflecting in the peaceful serenity of the MLK Memorial Garden.
We’re also proud to feature The Tipsy Mule, a vintage horse trailer turned mobile bar founded by Kendell Palmquist. Kendell’s story is a reminder that great ideas, when infused with purpose and playfulness, create lasting memories.
For those taking adventures on the road, we’re spotlighting the refined BMW X5 Silver Anniversary Edition and the innovative all-electric Mercedes-Benz G580e—luxury vehicles built for wherever summer leads.
And if your journey takes you out of state, consider Lost Pines Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas. Set along the Colorado River, this serene getaway blends upscale comfort with outdoor adventure—perfect for a mid-summer reset.
As always, thank you for exploring with us and supporting the people and businesses that make this community so special.
Warmly,

Spend Time Exploring Columbia's Lesser-Known Parks and Trails This Summer
ARTICLE BY LINDA DITCH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH JANE SHORTHOSE
Yes, Cosmo is the largest municipal park in the city. However, did you know that just behind the t-ball fields, you will find the Bear Creek Trailhead? This 4.8-mile hike links to Albert-Oakland Park to the east. This expansive limestone trail traces Bear Creek’s natural drainage system and features a 450-foot boardwalk constructed along a steep hillside, offering views of Bear Creek.
The lovely and serene MLK Memorial Garden is tucked right off Stadium Blvd. downtown. It is also the trailhead for the MKT Trail, a 9.3-mile route that is suitable for mountain biking, road biking, running, and hiking. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. The trail connects to the Katy Trail and features wetlands and wooded areas.
If rock climbing is how you spend your free time, then this park is perfect. For more than 60 years, rappellers and climbers have tackled its limestone crags. It is also where you’ll find the 4.25-mile Hinkson Creek Trail, a scenic hike that connects Grindstone Nature Area to the MKT Trail and the Hinkson Creek Recreation Area on the University of Missouri Campus.
Known for its live music, Cooper’s Landing also offers a full-service marina, campground, and store right on the banks of the Missouri River off the Katy Trail. A fun surprise attraction is Boat Henge, where a variety of boats are stuck into the ground to mimic Stonehenge in the UK. CoopersLandingMO.com
Take a break from the city at this state park just outside of town. There, you can enjoy everything from camping and mountain biking to canoeing and paddle boarding. MoStateParks.com/park/finger-lakes -state-park.
This is a lesser-known trailhead located in the southeast section of Rock Bridge State Park. Hikers and runners enjoy its bluffs and impressive views.
Unless noted, information on most of these parks and trails can be found at AllTrails.com and COMO.gov.

TURNING EVENTS INTO UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES WITH THE TIPSY MULE MOBILE BAR
When it comes to curating the perfect party, The Tipsy Mule delivers every time. With a strong foundation in branding, storytelling, and hospitality, founder Kendell Palmquist has turned a vintage horse trailer into mid-Missouri's go-to event showstopper. From weddings and corporate gatherings to pop-ups and parties, The Tipsy Mule offers a one-of-a-kind dry hire bartending experience that’s anything but ordinary. Read on for insights from the founder herself, as she shares the story, the spark, and the sip that started it all.
WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME ‘THE TIPSY MULE’?
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE TIPSY MULE?
“The idea came during a time when I was craving something more creative and fulfilling than a traditional 9-to-5. I wanted to build something from the ground up that not only allowed me to flex my business and marketing skills, but also brought joy and ease to people’s celebrations. I’ve always loved a good party—especially one with thoughtful details—so the idea of a mobile bar that could roll into any setting and instantly elevate the vibe just clicked.”
“It’s a nod to both the physical transformation of the vintage 2-horse trailer that once hauled mules, and the classic cocktail—the Moscow Mule. The name felt playful but grounded in story, which is exactly how I wanted the brand to feel.”
“All the time—and it’s one of my favorite parts of running this business. We’ve partnered with boutiques, fitness studios, photographers, planners, and venues to create unique experiences that go beyond a typical bar setup. Whether it’s a mocktail sip-and-shop, a photo booth moment with a greenery wall, or a pop-up for game day, I love building creative concepts with other passionate small business owners.” 01
WHICH COCKTAIL DO YOU THINK STEALS THE SHOW?
“One of my favorites is a fresh blackberry bourbon smash—it’s bold but balanced and always gets people talking. We like to put our own spin on classic cocktails, with creative garnishes or seasonal flavors, and can always turn them into mocktails so everyone gets something special.”
