LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health + Wellness

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Scott Barr | scott.barr@citylifestyle.com M AN AG I N G E D I TO R

Stephanie Barr | stephanie.barr@citylifestyle.com

I recently recovered from an illness. It’s that time of year, right? The “sick” time of year when germs just hover around with seemingly nowhere to go but into our bodies. At least in Colorado Springs, we can open our windows, even periodically in winter, to air things out. Anytime I recuperate from an illness—big or small—I feel new appreciation for my health. For being well. The concept of wellness is nothing new. In fact, Hippocrates focused on preventing illness as early as 500 BC. The first known use of the word “wellness” in the English language dates to the 1650s, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. In more modern times, Dan Rather brought the term to the forefront during a 60 Minutes segment in 1979, when he said: “Wellness, there’s a word you don’t hear everyday." These days, it’s a common household term. Wellness is a big umbrella in the year 2024, encompassing traditional and alternative health care, physical fitness, beauty, mental health, nutrition, spas, hot springs and even wellness tourism. Everyone wants a piece of it and with good reason. Who wouldn’t want to be well? What do you do to stay well? Exercising? Meditating? Seeing your physician for regular checkups? Spending time outdoors? Making time for family and friends? Flip through this month’s issue to read about Colorado Springs’ new mayor’s wellness routine and his plans for boosting mental health in our city. Read about a great new facial bar with terrific therapies for your skin, about a Colorado resort merging nature and technology in its healing mineral waters, and about a local company that helps clear clutter and free up brain space. Learn about a local company that pairs dogs and owners with opportunities to give back. Hear the story behind Colorado’s Ice Castles. Read about a brewery dedicated to community, about a local woman who traded a successful career in finance to decorate cookies, and about a local French-style boulangerie with a big focus on local. Finally, learn about an artist who brings stories to life. Happy New Year from all of us here at Colorado Springs Lifestyle Magazine!

COLOR A DO SPR INGS’ NEW M AYOR SHINES LIGHT ON M ENTA L HEA LTH MAYOR MOBOLADE: MAKING WELLNESS A PRIORITY FOR HIMSELF AND THE PIKES PEAK REGION

Mayor Yemi Mobolade is a longtime believer in making physical and mental health a priority. “There are things I do on a daily basis,” he says. “There are things I do on a weekly basis. And there are things I do on a monthly basis. … Many of these practices and rhythms I actually started before I became mayor, so I feel like I’ve been able to carry those grounding rhythms into the work as mayor.” Each month, he meets with his spiritual director “to just center and step away from the mayor identity and just focus on who Yemi is and his health.” Each week, he meets with his executive coach, who helps him focus on his leadership. Each day, he awakens at 5:30 am, exercises (an app-based workout with Jillian Michaels, for inquiring minds), spends a bit of quiet time reflecting and reading, then makes coffee for his wife before they get their three young children ready for school. If he takes a day off from his routine, he notices.

FINDING BALANCE

Mobolade lives in Colorado Springs with wife, Abbey, a nurse and nursing educator, and their children, ages 10, 6 and 4. He says he finds balance between taking care of the city and taking care of his family in three primary ways: • Being efficient with his time and activities. He might attend event, but leave a little early to tuck his kids in. • Empowering three leaders in his office of community affairs to help represent him. • Reframing the idea of “leadership” to include showing up at his kids’ dance recitals and soccer games. The median age is Colorado Springs is 34 years old, he says. Many residents are raising young families. He says he tries to demonstrate through his actions that taking care of family is leadership, too.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Originally from Nigeria, Mobolade immigrated to the United States at the age of 17 to pursue the American Dream through education. Since then, he has earned multiple bachelor’s and master’s degrees from multiple universities.

“WHAT I LOVE IN TERMS OF WHAT WE’RE DOING TODAY IS LEADERS LIKE ME COMING OUT AND BEING ABLE TO TALK ABOUT IT.” He previously served as the city’s small business development administrator and the vice president of business retention and expansion for the Colorado Springs Chamber & Economic Development Corporation. And on June 6, he was sworn in as the city’s first black, first immigrant and first non-Republican mayor (he is independent). Over the last few months, he has had several full-circle moments, including handing out “Mayors Young Leaders Awards” similar to one he received in 2015 and speaking to a room of newly naturalized citizens–a privilege he earned himself six years ago. But life hasn’t always been easy. “I didn’t grow up in a most-perfect home,” he says. “I had challenges in my own home, feeling like a misfit. I butted heads with my dad. I tried to run away from home. I had my own struggle with suicidal thoughts. And I’ve overcome. … Those two parts of the story are really important—not just what our struggle is, but the process of overcoming. I’m a product of good mentors and people who saw something in me before I saw it in myself.” He wants others to know that if they’re struggling, they are not alone. “It turns out most of us have struggled in one way or the other,” he says. “What I love in terms of what we’re doing today is leaders like me coming out and being able to talk about it.” Website: https://coloradosprings.gov/mayor-yemi-mobolade

Mobolade’s administration plans to launch an initiative in 2024 called 1000 Block Parties. “This initiative has so many possibilities around it because it’s so easy. It’s so accessible. It is so tangible, and people get it. … If we can get neighbors to know as few as six of their neighbors, it drastically improves their mental health,” he says. “This is something that everyone can come around.” JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . MEET THE OWNER

Sydney Busker discovered Face Foundrie while attending college in Minnesota. She was struggling with skin issues and became a client after searching for affordable options. Despite a doctorate degree in occupational therapy, she often considered starting a Face Foundrie franchise of her own. After deciding to take the leap, Busker decided to relocate from Minnesota to Colorado Springs. She found the perfect location at the Promenade Shops at Briargate. Open for just over a year, Face Foundrie has had a successful start. “My proudest moments this year have been helping to create a team of strong women as well as forming connections and partnerships with the community and likeminded businesses,” Busker says.

Health + Wellness Rule These Waters DURANGO HOT SPRINGS RESORT + SPA: MERGING NATURE + TECHNOLOGY

There’s a magical place tucked into the San Juan Mountain Range in far southwest Colorado. A place of hot springs and old trees and history. A place of tranquility and technology. Durango Hot Springs Resort + Spa, which sits between the city of Durango and Purgatory Ski Resort, is in the final stages of a major expansion and redesign of the historic Trimble Hot Springs.

WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE

What used to be a mostly local attraction with a pool and two geothermal tubs now boasts more than 40 water features, including 32 hot springs mineral pools (19 family-friendly and 13 adult-only), two cold plunges, a 25-meter resort-style swimming pool, five private Japanese-inspired cedar “Ofuro” soaking tubs, 10 ADA-accessible soaking pools with zero-entry ramps, a reflexology walking path and a mineral water rain tower. “We are on track to have the most in Colorado,” says Operations Manager Mason Quick. “We are one of the largest outdoor hot springs in all of Colorado.”

NATURAL HOT SPRINGS + TECHNOLOGY

Durango’s hot springs bubble up from 120 feet below ground, bringing with them 32 minerals and a delightfully conspicuous absence of sulphuric odor. The pressure that propels the water upward also provides an exceptionally high flow rate that naturally exchanges fresh water in each mineral pool every two hours instead of the typical 24 hours. But the owners decided to take these waters giant step further, using quantum fusion and another new technology called AquaGen.

Let’s start with the quantum fusion. Although it sounds like something from the 1980s movie “Back to the Future,” it’s actually a magnetic process that breaks minerals up into smaller particles. That allows them to stay suspended in the water longer, promoting better absorption into the body. And AquaGen? Durango Hot Springs Resort + Spa was the first natural hot springs to use this technology to infuse one trillion nano bubbles of medical grade oxygen into each liter of water. Water pressure then infuses this oxygen into the body through the skin and bloodstream, similar to a hyperbaric chamber, Quick says. Oxygen also serves as a natural disinfectant, oxidizing potential impurities for cleaner water without chemicals such as chlorine and bromine. “We’re really trying to bring health and wellness to the forefront of the hot springs industry,” Quick says.

BEYOND THE WATER

While water is the main attraction here, there are plenty of other amenities, as well: Massage, Facials, and Skincare: The resort offers massage therapies ranging from the traditional Swedish and deep tissue to specialties like “Like Vitality” and “Stone Cold Fire,” designed to aid athletes’ muscle recovery. Various facials and skin care are available, as well. Spa services include 2.5 hours of soaking. Food + Beverages: Bear’s Watershed serves beer, wine, frozen drinks, non-alcoholic beverages, sandwiches and snacks. The Elevated Eats food truck serves lunch and dinner items. Reflexology Walking Path: This path is designed to stimulate acupressure points on the bottom of the feet. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C OLORAD O S P R I N G S

DURANGO HOT SPRINGS RESORT + SPA Durango Hot Springs Resort + Spa was recently added to the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop, a stunning 800mile driving route through western Colorado. This is the ultimate road trip, showcasing 23 soaking experiences in eight premier geothermal destinations: Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Ouray, Durango, Pagosa Springs, Saguache County and Chaffee County.

Botanic Gardens and Wildlife Habitat: The historic property is a certified Wildlife Habitat recognized by the Nation Wildlife Federation with more than 250 different plant species providing food, water and cover for wildlife including butterflies, hummingbirds, red wing blackbirds, and western tanagers.

ADVENTURE + FUTURE PLANS

Durango Hot Springs Resort + Spa is situated in southwest Colorado's so-called “Four Corners” region. The area is known for adventure—biking, hiking, rock climbing, skiing, river rafting, horseback riding, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and more. The land where the resort sits today was purchased for $8000 in the late 1800s and has changed hands several times over the years. The property was acquired by the current owners in 2019. The first phase of renovation focused on the hot springs and other day-use amenities. Those improvements have boosted visits from about 16,000 annually to roughly 16,000 monthly. “It was a really big ‘You build it and they will come,’” Quick says. Lodging is in the works. In the meantime, the resort provides a list of nearby lodging partners. A Zen garden is under construction behind the spa and set to open next summer. That will include infrared saunas, quiet reading areas and event spaces. In the future, the resort hopes to offer on-site or nearby biking, hiking, horseback riding and other opportunities to guests. Reducing the Mental Load The Simple Sort: Helping Clients Declutter + Organize ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE ELAN STUDIO

J E N N

C A M P O

Owner | The Simple Sort

Organization. With one word, the entire reading audience has been polarized into two groups. One group sat up a little straighter, their eyes lit up and their ears piqued to hear the when and where. The other group quietly melted out of the room to avoid the conversation completely or took an “important” work email that needed immediate attention.

A LITTLE MORE STRUCTURE

In truth, almost everyone has at least one area of life that could use a little more structure. Maybe it’s the hall closet, or a spare room that seems to be a catch-all. Perhaps, for you, the road has been paved with good intentions. You are part of the first group of people and just need to get started or find the right systems that work for your family. Oftentimes, disorganization can be a sneaky after-effect following a significant life event. Perhaps a couple just got married and are now combining two households. Maybe a loved one passed and there is a sentimental barrier to re-structuring one’s living space. The addition of children to a family can be an unexpected influx of extra things. Maybe someone just jumped headlong into a new job and the systems that were working are no longer sufficient to accommodate a new lifestyle.

CLUTTER MANAGEMENT

Jenn Campo was working as a home stager and she found herself doing more and more clutter management with families. “I grew up in a cluttered home,” she states, “I felt the weight of all the stuff.” She goes on to explain this feeling led to her developing a strong sense

28

of organization to be more in control of her space and she has honed that skill over the years. The more homes she staged and the more clutter she managed, she realized there was a space for professional organizing on a more permanent basis. The big thing about organizing for others that she and her team stress is they meet their clients where they are and provide a no-judgment setting. Life gets busy and things can get away from us, but the team at The Simple Sort is here to help bring peace back into the home space, help develop easy-to-maintain systems and get their clients back to a place where they can thrive. “Organizing one’s own space takes more time and energy than people think,” Campo says.

FRESH EYES

She indicates that her team does this every day and they have set systems that have proven effective; it’s just a matter of tweaking those systems to fit a client’s style. Where a client may have already hit decision-fatigue and gassed out on some of their own organizing efforts, the team can come in with fresh eyes and perspective to bring that home project across the finish line. “We love a mess,” she, says, grinning, “because we can look past it and find a solution – like a puzzle to be solved.” From a singular closet to a whole home overhaul, Campo and her team at The Simple Sort are in the business of reducing the mental load created by clutter and curating peaceful, thriving spaces. GET OUTSIDE... IN WINTER! ARTICLE BY CARA BUKACEK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ICE CASTLES

Ice Castles: Cripple Creek Welcomes Visitors to an Icy Wonderland

In 2000, Brent Christensen relocated from California to Utah with his wife and six children. Snow was a novelty and Christensen and his children enjoyed discovering all the ways to enjoy winter. One day, his neighbor accidentally left his water hose on and it created a giant ice monolith. This inspired Christensen to create something fun for his children. Using wooden frames, Christensen started experimenting with water to create tunnels, slides, and sculptures. His front lawn became a winter utopia and before long, the neighborhood kids started showing up to enjoy his icy formations. There was just one problem: In the spring, after the ice melted, the wood crumbled to the ground.

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME

The following year, Christensen devised a method to create a structure without a frame. He discovered that inverted icicles could be sprayed with water and it would build them up. They became quite strong. This method allowed him to create walls, slides, arches, tunnels and sculptures. In 2011, he built and opened his first public ice castle. After his success in Utah, Christensen opened a location in Summit County, Colorado. After a few years in Dillon, the Ice Castles chose a new Colorado location: Cripple Creek. “Cripple Creek is a great location because of its high elevation, proximity to Colorado Springs and Denver, you can avoid “the tunnel,” and the community is so supportive and excited to host us,” Christensen says.

30

M UST SE E | ENTERTAI NME N T

MONTHS OF PREPARATION AND PLANNING

The planning process for the ice castle begins in summer. They determine the layout by locating the water source, drainage, parking area, and then examine the land formations. They list all of the ice elements and then determine where each element will be placed. In October, they roll in with their equipment and their schematics and begin placing the infrastructure of electricity, water pipes, and lighting. Once freezing temps arrive, they begin building the layers of ice to create an ice castle that spans across nearly an acre of land. “Mother Nature determines when the Ice Castle will open,” Christensen says. “We typically announce our opening a week before the official date.”

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

• Make sure you dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear with good traction. Weston spent much of her childhood traveling and was highly influenced by experiencing different cultures. Her paintings reflect a life spent observing beauty and diversity. She says she’s always observed that, “People are beautiful all over the world.” The mystique of various fashion and cultures captivated her curiosity and eventually

led her to consider the influence of society and how people approach their lives. In addition to growing up in Chile, she spent time in Indonesia and North, South and Latin America. While studying art in college, Weston started painting with oils, but switched to acrylics due to safety concerns when starting her family. She loves experimenting with the various mediums and additives that add to the versatility of acrylics. When her kids were young, she began working with clay and really enjoyed the tactile, messy process. Weston’s use of color is bold and unique and her compositions are about the tender side of humanity. Her paintings and clay compositions tell a story, often capturing someone’s depth and outlook on life. Her work displays a unique voice and style that is distinctly hers. “Be yourself,” Weston says. “If you’re an artist, if you’re a dancer, if you’re a musician, the world needs you. The world wouldn’t be as beautiful without creative minds and so we need to embrace that. If you’re creative, be that.”

As a young girl, Rosario Weston always felt a desire to paint and create. As an elementary student, she won her first award for art, an overall school first prize for a painting she created in a day. From then on, she felt a confidence in her ability, but she knew she had so much to learn. Growing up in Chile, her dad would take her to Chile’s National Fine Arts Museum in Santiago, and she would imagine that with practice, she could get close to the level of the master painters. Rosario had tremendous support from her father, who would always tell her that she was an artist. Thankfully, she believed it.

DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE

Painting has been a medicine for Weston during even the most challenging times. Her relationship with painting has evolved from her days as a student learning technique and composition to a relationship of intimacy with her work. She knows what she wants to say through the painting and it is more than technique and composition now. Weston dreams of reaching a certain level of proficiency with her art as she continues on her artistic journey. She wants to keep challenging herself until she can find the end of her abilities and feels at home here in Colorado Springs. Like many local

creatives, she is excited about the growing vibrant and supportive artist community here. Looking toward the future, she wants Colorado Springs to be known as a place where creators can be supported and collaborate with other creatives. Weston reflects, “The journey is finite so every minute that you have to devote to your curiosity and the findings that you have along the way, you need to capture those.” Website: https://www.saatchiart.com/rosarioweston Facebook: @Rosario_Weston-Artist Instagram: @Rosario_Weston

LOCA L NONPROFIT OFFERS Comfort IN A CR ISIS

When the Waldo Canyon fire started in June of 2012, Nancy Trepagnier wanted to help so she brought her two therapy dogs to comfort people at hotels and evacuation centers. Seeing how the dogs were able to console and distract displaced residents helped Nancy recognize a big need for well-trained therapy dogs to be ready to meet the needs of people in distress at a moment’s notice. From this experience, Nancy founded Go Team Therapy Dogs, a nonprofit organization dedicated to training dogs to be therapy, crisis and airport canines. What started as a local organization has now grown to national and international teams. There are currently 800 active Go Teams that are equipped to respond to everything from school shootings to busy holiday travel at the airport to fires and other natural disasters.

UNIQUE TRAINING

As the founder, executive director and master trainer, Nancy says the key to Go Team’s success is the rigorous training that the dogs receive. The dogs must pass an AKC approved Canine Good Citizen test and be evaluated for fit and pass 20 hours of training with the organization. The training is intense and includes being exposed to loud noises and busy environments to ensure that the dogs have the temperament required to remain calm in stressful situations. Any dog and handler can try out for the Go Team. They are open to all breeds that are at least

one year old and good with people and other dogs. The dogs need to be re-tested in person every year to remain active and make sure they are still a good fit. Thanks to their extensive training and the organization's desire to give back to the community, Nancy says the Go Team dogs “go wherever they are needed.”

MISSION AND MEANING

In addition to comforting those in need, being a part of Go Team Therapy Dogs provides meaning for participants. Getting involved with the team is a great way

to get parents and kids doing something together. Nancy recalls receiving a letter from the family of a woman who was on hospice, expressing the amazing impact of the therapy dog that climbed up in bed with her and got her talking again at the end of her life. Nancy founded Go Team in memory of her son. She dreams of having enough dogs to respond to every request for support and would love to see welltrained teams continue to serve across the United States. Her favorite thing is watching the joy that people experience when they interact with the dogs. The team is always looking for new dogs and owners to participate. “We consider ourselves one big family," Nancy says. FROM FINANCE TO COOKIES Jennifer Choi has always loved baking, but settled for a career in finance. In 2016, she started her own accounting firm and was very successful. Over the years, however, she grew unfulfilled and began to consider a change.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

During the pandemic, Choi became interested in cookie decorating. She watched and studied instructional videos on YouTube and Instagram. Because Choi had no formal training

in cookie decorating, she took advantage of the shutdown to practice and hone her skills. Choi’s friends and family were so amazed by her cookies that they encouraged her to begin selling them. Inspired, Choi made the decision to sell her accounting firm and become a full-time cookie artist. Craft & Crumbles was born.

INTRODUCTION AND INNOVATION

The Backyard Market was a perfect venue for Choi to introduce her cookie creations to

the community. She created tiny, one-bite cookies and provided free samples for people to try. The tiny treats were such a hit that Jennifer began selling little jars full of them. They became one of her best sellers at the market. To keep her business fresh and fun, Choi frequently implements new ideas and launches new products. She regularly develops and introduces new cookie flavors and designs. She also recently obtained a new mobile cookie trailer to create more room for new creative ventures in her business. “Everyone has their own unique style and I try my best to bring that out in my cookies and my business,” Choi says. “My designs are sophisticated, classy, feminine, and sometimes sexy! I feel that my branding and decor reflect that, as well.”

COMPETING FOR A TITLE

Perhaps the pinnacle of Choi’s business so far was being invited by The Food Network to compete in the seventh season of Christmas Cookie Challenge. Choi competed against other talented bakers in cookie-themed challenges for the title of Cookie Champion. “Never in my wildest dreams would I ever think I'd be on television much less baking and decorating cookies in a competition with some of the best cookiers in the world!” she says. “The entire process felt like an out-ofbody experience and I still feel like it was all a dream! It was the most difficult and stressful thing I've done in my entire life, but it was all so fun and thrilling at the same time.”

COOKIES FOR ALL OCCASIONS

Craft & Crumbles welcomes custom orders. Choi’s creativity and artistic talent are seemingly endless. And her cookies are not only beautiful—they are equally delicious! If you’ve ever visited France, you are undoubtedly aware of how delicious the baguettes, croissants and quiches taste from the local boulangerie. These bakeries are a significant part of French food culture, and they can be found on nearly every street corner. However, they are a rare sight in the United States. In June 2023, the Colorado Springs community was thrilled to learn about the opening of Provision Bread & Bakery. People lined up to discover what this new establishment had to offer, and they were not disappointed.

ARTICLE BY KATHY ROBERTS

Provision: Bringing the Sublime Art of a French Bakery to the Springs

The bakery provides everything you would expect from a traditional boulangerie and much more. The majority of the ingredients are sourced from organic, regenerative farms, most of which are local. Additionally, all the products are primarily wholegrain and naturally leavened. Presently, most of the bread flour is milled in Boulder, but co-owners Brandon Delgrosso and Trista Heileman aim to mill their flour, including gluten-free flour, in the Springs. "We want to be part of the grain train,” Delgrosso says. “There are incredible textures and nuances we know people will love.”

SUPER CLEAN + PRESERVATIVE FREE

"We want to serve our community with excellent bread and baked goods that are super-clean and preservative-free," Delgrosso adds. "Provision is deeply rooted in the local food supply chain. Our ingredients are seasonal and nutrient-rich. We believe you should know your farmer and where your food comes from."

“We want to serve our community with excellent bread and baked goods that are superclean and preservative-free.” For instance, their produce is sourced from various local farms such as New Roots Farm in Canon City, High Altitude Rhubarb in Colorado Springs, Austin Family Farm near Paonia and Mountain Freshies in the North Fork Valley. They also source eggs, beef, lamb and sausage from Back Sheep Pastures, Frost Family Farms, Jones Farm, Nola Naturals and Gosar Ranch & Mountain Mama Milling. Delgrosso says it’s a practice that’s good for the economy and keeps the money in the community.

PERFECTING THE RECIPES

Delgrosso is well-known for his expertise in coffee beans as the founder of Switchback Coffee Roasters. After having a baby two-and-a-half years ago, Heileman retired from her position as Switchback’s head baker. However, Delgrosso convinced her to join him in his new venture as co-owner. To perfect the recipes, Heileman used her home oven, initially. They tested their cookies, hand pies and other pastries at Switchback to determine if they were heading in the right direction. "Trista is the brains behind the art and the ingredients,” Delgrosso says. “I'm the operations, frontof-the-house person.” Once they were confident in their concept, they found a building in downtown Colorado Springs that could accommodate the specialized equipment they needed to bring Provision to life. On any given Thursday through Sunday, you will see people sitting outside enjoying their jambon and a group of people lined up inside as they decide whether they’ll be taking home a baguette, focaccia, English muffins, cookies, veggie sandwich or any of the hard-toresist treats. RED LEG BREWING COMPANY: BEER, GAMES, MUSIC + FOOD

LOCA L’S CH OICE | F OOD + BEVERAGE

After returning home from a military deployment, 28-year-old Todd Baldwin found himself contemplating his next moves. His desk job left him feeling unfulfilled and he wanted a change. He brewed beer as a hobby and loved the process. Baldwin decided to open a brewery.

MAKING IT HAPPEN

With the location selected, all he needed was a loan for $250,000. That proved difficult, as loan officers weren’t comfortable giving that kind of money to someone his age. Determined, Baldwin opened several credit card accounts and within a few days, he had maxed them all out to secure his project. On July 4, 2014, Baldwin opened his 4,000-square-foot brewery. He named it Red Leg as a nod to the field artillery soldiers who wore red stripes on the leg of their uniforms during the Civil War.

ALL THE RIGHT MOVES

Over the next decade, Baldwin made several smart business moves that helped set him apart. His was one of the first breweries in Colorado Springs to can its beer. He also curated a community-centered atmosphere that drew people to the establishment. During the pandemic, Red Leg Brewing Company was well-positioned to get through the shutdown. Because its beer came in cans, Red Leg was easily able to transition to a to-go system of operation. Baldwin didn’t lay off a single employee.

BIGGER AND BETTER

When Colorado Springs loosened zoning restrictions for breweries, Baldwin purchased land near the Garden of Gods. He procured a loan for $10 million and set about designing and building a facility unlike anything in the Colorado Springs area.

In July of 2021, Red Leg Brewing opened a 2 ½-acre multipurpose complex. In the center is the 14,000-square foot brewery with 20 rotating taps that include its award-winning beer along with guest taps. There is also an expansive rooftop deck with views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range. The outdoor space includes a large beer garden complete with long tables, outdoor games, and a stage for live music events or movies. If you find yourself hungry, there are five on-site dining options housed in shipping containers. There are also shipping containers housing a cocktail bar and a bike shop with rentals.

FUN FOR EVERYONE

As a father himself, it was important to Baldwin that his facility was family-friendly. There are several non-alcoholic beverage choices, along with kid-friendly food options. It is also a dog-friendly establishment. Make sure to read the kid and pet policies before your visit. “We are in the business of creating memories for people and we’re very proud of that,” Baldwin says. Red Leg is much more than just a brewery. Their philosophy is Where Community & Culture Meet and they go above and beyond to ensure that locals and tourists alike have an enjoyable experience. They host weekly events such as live music, movie nights, makers markets and seasonal experiences.

PHILANTHROPY

Baldwin is passionate about giving back to his community. Red Leg hosts fundraisers, supports several charities, and has given back over $100,000 to help the community thrive. This generous spirit is just one of the many ways that Red Leg shows its love and appreciation for our great city. Website: https://redlegbrewing.com/ Facebook + Instagram: @RedLegBrewCo
