What's Your Style?

Merriam-Webster’s top definitions of “style” are:

• a particular manner or technique by which something is done, created, or performed

• a distinctive manner of expression (as in writing or speech)

• a distinctive manner or custom of behaving or conducting oneself

• also: a particular mode of living

Distinctive.

What is distinctive about you and/or your mode of living?

Is it your witty banter? Your fabulous shoe collection? Your seasonal porch decorations? Your dinner parties?

Are you the life of the party or the voice of reason? They’re equally impressive. Do you love personal shoppers and high-end boutiques or prefer to discover treasures at local consignment shops? As we swing into fall, embrace whatever style helps make you, well, you.

Need some suggestions? The September issue of Colorado Springs Lifestyle Magazine has plenty.

For the chefs (and amateurs) in the group, we tell you about an expert blade sharpener who can make your knives shine. For our runners, read about the Pikes Peak Marathon, widely regarded as one of the toughest races in the world. More of a dance fan? Learn all about a local Irish dance studio.

We have the details about a 56-year-old menswear store that embraced bespoke tailoring before it was trendy and a local kimono designer bringing her wares to every shape, size and age.

Do you love coffee? Check out our list of where to get a great cup. And finally... learn a bit about the science behind a great smile.

Thanks for reading and enjoy your September!

BESPOKE MENSWEAR

Rutledge’s: Quality, Value, Fit + Service

Once upon a time, all clothing was made specifically to fit its owner; every detail was customized.

Made to measure was the standard as ready-to-wear items were not yet available. Every item of clothing was hand stitched until the year 1790, when the sewing machine was invented. Even then, mass production of clothing items was not a necessity until the tailoring industry was faced with producing military uniforms

16

on a large scale. This forced the industry to seek more efficient methods of production. Enterprising individuals started producing ready-to-wear clothing and department store warehouses full of tailors working long hours started to dwindle.

By the 1900s, tailoring was a niche industry and by the 1970s, demand was waning with the stylistic changes of the time leaning more toward casual and unencumbered.

HOWEVER...

There is no such thing as on-size-fits-all.

Body type is one element of differentiation, and perhaps the most well-known. Shoulders, torso, legs and seat are all parts of a person’s figuration or posture and tailoring specifically to these elements is what creates a truly custom fit that is set apart.

Although bespoke tailoring is coming back into fashion, Rutledge’s has been on board since 1967.

Jerry Rutledge came to Colorado to study Nuclear Physics and upon assessing the forecast in that field at the time, made the pivot into the clothing industry. Colorado Springs was where he landed and opened Rutledge’s clothier in a 700-square-foot space next to Florsheim Shoe Company. After four expansions and finally a move to their current downtown location, Rutledge’s has a unique offering of the highest quality garments in six different price points, including brands found nowhere else in the state.

SUITS FOR EVERY OCCASION

From the onset, Rutledge committed to offer the finest. The finest quality, finest value, finest fit and finest service. The Rutledge’s team consistently evaluates the market and its offerings to ensure they carry the best value for their customers for the spend. Each client has their measurements kept on file as well as their purchase history. This allows Rutledge’s staff to get a feel for the client’s style and preferences for future purchases.

Clientele at Rutledge’s range from someone buying his first suit for a wedding or interview to the seasoned professional growing his wardrobe after years of accumulation. Staff is educated on fit, color theory, important details, and overall message. Suits are to men’s fashion as black shoes are to women’s fashion. They are staples and there is one for every occasion, mood, and season.

BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP

The relationship starts out as many others, with questions to get to know you better. Any number of these questions will give Rutledge’s staff the foundation they need to walk with you through the decision-making process. Jerry Rutledge comments that they are there to give the clients what they want. He goes on to explain the goal is not simply to sell a bespoke suit, a Robert Graham button down, a 20-year shoe, or a Grenadine tie—it is to make their clientele effective. Effectiveness in business or in fun, Rutledge’s believes fashion is intentional, down to the button and the stitch.

Whether searching for a gift or a truly special piece for your personal wardrobe, Rutledge’s is now serving you at its downtown Colorado Springs location as well as its newest location, The Broadmoor. When the details matter, Rutledge’s is the right shop.

A CONFIDENT SMILE NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE

YOUR SMILE SPEAKS VOLUMES... EVEN BEFORE YOU SAY A WORD

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIRA

SELF CARE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 20

Why a smile matters... Q&A with Dr. Andrew Hall from The Studio for Exceptional Denistry:

NUMEROUS STUDIES SUGGEST THE SIMPLE ACT OF SMILING IMPROVES MOOD AND MAKES PEOPLE SEEM MORE ATTRACTIVE AND INTELLIGENT. PLEASE ELABORATE ON THIS. WHY IS A SMILE IMPORTANT?

The simple act of smiling can absolutely do all these things. In fact, one study found that genuine, intense smiling is associated with longer life. A simple smile can trigger the release of neuropeptides that improve your neural communication. It also causes the release of dopamine and serotonin, which can boost your mood. Think of smiling as a natural antidepressant. We are naturally drawn to people who smile. While more severe or negative facial expressions like frowns, scowls and grimaces effectively push people away, smiling is seen as more attractive—and people may even assume you have more positive personality traits if you're smiling. It can also make you look more youthful. The muscles used to smile also lift the face, making a person appear younger. So instead of opting for a facelift, just consider upgrading your smile so you can smile your way through the day—you'll look younger and feel better.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON REASONS WHY PEOPLE DON'T SHOW THEIR TEETH WHEN THEY SMILE?

It really just boils down to a lack of confidence in their smile. Some individuals smile with their mouths closed even when they are genuinely happy. If someone is insecure about their teeth, it may keep them from smiling with their mouth open. Crooked teeth, worn teeth, discolored teeth or even possibly missing teeth are some of the top reasons people hide their teeth while smiling.

WHY SHOULD THEY THINK ABOUT FIXING THOSE ISSUES?

A beautiful smile can change the story of your life, open doors to new relationships, bring new opportunities your way, and enhance your confidence and self-esteem. In terms of first impressions, your smile speaks volumes — even before you ever say a word. It’s the first thing people notice about you, and its power cannot be overstated. Let's not forget there are also functional benefits to, say, straightening your teeth or replacing a missing tooth.

BRACES USED TO BE THE PRIMARY METHOD FOR CORRECTING SMILES. WHAT OTHER TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES ARE AVAILABLE TODAY FOR STRAIGHTENING, WHITENING AND MAKING A SMILE THE BEST IT CAN BE?

While braces are still an option to help improve a smile, the three most common procedures for transforming a smile would be professional teeth whitening, clear aligner therapy such as Invisalign, and porcelain veneers. Clear aligners are an esthetic and comfortable option for

orthodontic treatment and have gained immense popularity over the last decade. Clear aligners are plastic trays that fit over your teeth. Each plastic tray is slightly different and will apply a gentle pressure to your teeth to move them into alignment over time. Clear aligners provide a more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable alternative to traditional braces.

WHAT ARE CLIENTS ASKING FOR MOST FREQUENTLY THESE DAYS?

The popularity of porcelain veneers would make that the most frequent request. Veneers give us the ability to provide and change so many dimensions of a smile. These wafer-thin pieces of porcelain are custom made, including size, shape, and color for the person who is getting them.  They are then adhered to the front part of the tooth and can give you a confident smile for decades.

ANY ADVANCES ON THE HORIZON?

Dentistry will always continue to advance—the area I see most affecting cosmetic dentistry will be AI. How so, you might ask? Patients really want to know what a new smile will look like on them—with AI we already have the ability to provide some in-face visualization for these patients so they can start to see what they would look like after a smile makeover. Currently, we can take a picture of a patient and, with a few clicks, can show them an AI-enhanced photo rendering some various options in smile design. One advancement on the horizon would then allow us to take this picture, modify the design and then quickly print a 3D model of the new smile. This would allow us to then try on a motivational mock-up of their selected smile in less than an hour. I currently offer this service—we call it a smile test drive—but it requires much more time and collaboration. I think this will be a huge benefit for patients to truly see and feel how powerful a smile upgrade can be for them.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD OUR READERS KNOW?

I offer complimentary virtual consults. So, if they have any questions or want to know if they are a candidate for any of the procedures we discussed, they can get those answers from the comfort of their own home. It is a super simple process: Just request a virtual consult, which will ask you to take a selfie and pose your question. In return you will get a three- to five-minute personalized video from me answering your question and discussing the process to even include costs. I understand time is a valuable commodity and we want to allow patients to get the answers they deserve in the easiest possible way.

Race on America’s Mountain

PIKES PEAK MARATHON AND ASCENT CHALLENGE THE TOUGHEST RUNNERS

On September 16-17, athletes from 17 countries and 48 states will run America’s most challenging marathon and half marathon. An anticipated 800 runners will participate in the marathon on Sunday and 1800 runners will compete in the half marathon ascent on Saturday.

Founded in 1956, the Pikes Peak Marathon is the oldest continually held marathon in the United States. The race begins in Manitou Springs and runners run to the summit of Pikes Peak before descending back down for a total 26.2 miles. The half marathon Pikes Peak Ascent climbs 7,815 vertical feet and 13.3 miles from Manitou Springs to the summit.

What began as a dare in 1956 from Dr. Arne Suominen, who wanted to prove that smoking hindered physical endurance, has come to be known as one of the most challenging marathons in the world. In 2023, The Pikes Peak Marathon was named the #1 marathon in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Marathons in the United States.

CHALLENGING ON MANY FRONTS

Both the ascent and the marathon present a challenging race in different ways. Training for the ascent is focused on the uphill climb while the marathon adds the challenge of both the additional 13 miles and the downhill. The altitude, terrain and weather put runners to the test with huge temperature swings between the base of the mountain and the summit and the ever-present threat of altitude sickness.

Kathy Hubel, office manager for Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc., says, “Mastering nutritional and hydration intake is

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | FITNESS
30

really key for this race. In addition, the trail itself is technical with rocks, roots and different grades of terrain. Both races present really unique challenges, none of which are easy.”

FOR SOME, IT’S A ONCE IN A LIFETIME RUN

The majority of race competitors are local to Colorado and the immediate Pikes Peak area. For many of them including Sarah Fischer, this year’s race will not be their first. Fischer ran the marathon once before and has run the ascent multiple times, but she always has wanted to challenge herself by running the double (running the ascent on Saturday and the marathon on Sunday).

“I just want to run the double one time," Fischer says. "I want to finish both races. This will be my first and probably only time running both.”

For other runners, the race represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Running groups from other states will train and travel together for a chance to race on America’s mountain.

The event kicks off on Thursday at Memorial Park in Manitou Springs and ends with the post-race party and awards ceremony on Sunday at Soda Springs Park in Manitou Springs. All events are open to the public.

Feel Beautiful, Look Beautiful

Kiana Geditz opens to the door to her home wearing cutoff jean shorts, sandals and a camo kimono–looking at once casual and put together. Breezy. Effortless. Classy. The kimono carries the outfit. It makes the statement.

“You can dress it up. You can dress it down,” Geditz says.

THE INSPIRATION

Several years ago, Geditz was at her favorite restaurant in Las Vegas when a woman walked by wearing all black and… a kimono.

“That really pulled that outfit together for her,” Geditz says.

The longtime real estate agent, wife and mother of two resolved to create something like that for women of all shapes, ages, sizes and skin tones. A simple garment that could travel seamlessly from day to night, instantly elevating any ordinary outfit.

She enlisted a friend to help her mock up the first design and hired someone to help her design the first fabric, which features elegant cranes, cherry blossoms and the words “peace” and “love” written in Japanese.

Then, she found a manufacturer in California and settled on a name: Ziba Kimonos by Kiana Kouture. "Ziba" means beautiful in Farsi... the native language of her father, who grew up in Iran. To Geditz, the word signifies strength, confidence and beauty, a concept she learned early in life from her father and grandmother after her mother died of cancer when Geditz was five.

Fashion has always been part of her life. She has lived most of her life in Colorado. But as a child, she traveled to New York each summer to spend time with her grandmother, who took Geditz to work with her at Wallachs, a high-end men’s clothing store on 5th Avenue. The pair has remained close and Geditz jokingly asks her grandmother, now 96, to please stay alive at least until The Broadmoor begins carrying her line of kimonos.

THE EVOLUTION

These days, Ziba Kimonos come in three different styles–the ankle-length Geisha , the mid-length Kawaii and the just-covering-the-derriere Tanoshi–and about 10 fabric patterns. The best part? They are all polyester or poly blend and machine washable.

Geditz recently moved the manufacturing from California to American Made Apparel Manufacturing in Denver.

“I want to keep it in the United States,” she says.

It’s a little costlier than farming it overseas, but it's important to her. And having the facility close to home allows her to personally visit about twice a month to oversee production and to work more closely with the manufacturer. They recently began using the fabric scraps to create matching hair scrunchies and mini scarves to wrap around hair claw clips.

Next up? Boat-neck pullover dresses/cover ups. She is hoping to have those available by early next year.

“I really have a lot of fun with this,” she says.

At the moment, her wares are available at Strata Spa at Garden of the Gods Resort and The Spa at Flying Horse as well as on her website. She also regularly does pop-ups around town. Her kimonos range from $60 to $120, depending on style and fabric.

When women feel beautiful, they look beautiful and Geditz encourages women of all walks to try a Ziba—even those casual types who typically don jeans or leggings.

“Just pair it with a kimono, then you’ll have a pop of color,” she says. “There is something in my collection that will work for you.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT STYLE

Celtic Steps Brings Irish Dance to Colorado Springs

When Autumn Dowdle was just six years old, she saw the Celtic Steps Irish Dance Studio from Colorado Springs perform at the school where her mom was teaching. She was sold. Thirteen years later, she is still dancing and works as an instructor at the studio.

This style of dance is different and features a lot of fast feet movements. Dowdle calls it a unique blend of ballet and tap, but without using arms.

In 1994, Riverdance debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin and sparked a new and exciting movement of Irish dancing. Since then, the demand for Irish dance studios has grown worldwide. Here in Colorado Springs, the Celtic Steps Irish Dance Studio is led by owners Aisling and Shaun Casey, who met while touring with the Lord of the Dance.

IRISH DANCE IN COLORADO SPRINGS

Celtic Steps plays a large role in bringing Irish culture to Colorado Springs. Recently, they participated in the 2023 Pikes Peak Celtic Festival at the Mining Museum. Most of the shows are around St. Patrick’s Day to promote Irish culture and they perform in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade every year. They also perform at a variety of schools, retirement homes and events throughout the year.

At a recent performance for a veterans’ event, the dancers dazzled the crowd in stunning one-of-a-kind costumes adorned with sequins.

“Celtic Steps is the only Irish dance school in Colorado Springs,” Dowdle says. “And we’ve done pretty well with regional competitions.”

The show performances are a little more theatrical, but for competitions, the dance style is highly technical with synchronized movements. Dowdle says she finds a lot of similarities in how Irish dance and other types of dancing are taught and approached.

“Like all dance, it’s art,” she says.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

Irish dance remains culturally significant in Ireland. Students often begin learning around age four, but there are options to learn at any age and level. At the Celtic Steps studio here in Colorado Springs, classes are grouped by level so a given class may have dancers of varying ages. The studio also offers adult classes and the first trial class is free.

Like anything, it’s often the personal connections that leave a lasting impression. When asked what has been the most rewarding thing about being a part of the Irish dance community, Dowdle says “I’ve made a lot of friendships and while the Irish dance community is fairly big, it’s also really small and we all know each other. Getting to meet everyone and just being able to grow up in this type of community has been really nice.”

TheCutting Edge

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Whether you are a professional or a home chef, a sharp knife is a must. A dull knife requires more pressure to cut, increasing the likelihood of the knife slipping and injuring you. A sharp knife will glide through food with minimal effort. But it’s not just about safety. Dull knives crush food. A sharp knife is more respectful to your ingredients and is a joy to use.

If you have dull knives, you should consider a professional sharpening service. Meet Eric Newsholme, aka Eric “The Blade” Sharpener, your local neighborhood cutler.

SECOND GENERATION

Hailing from Atlanta, Newsholme is a second-generation cutler. He and his father owned a successful sharpening business that serviced around 400 Atlanta restaurants. In 2016, Newsholme and his wife moved to Colorado Springs, where he continues to sharpen, as well as educate his clients.

Newsholme is passionate about creating a relationship with his community. His goal is to share his knowledge so that people see the value of using a sharpening service versus attempting to do it on their own. He has studied the history and origins of almost

every knife on the market to ensure that each blade is sharpened correctly.

“When it comes to sharpening knives, you must know the country of origin. A German knife is made of a different type of steel than a Japanese knife. They are used to cut distinct types of foods, therefore the angles on the blade are different,” Newsholme says.

NOT JUST KNIVES

Newsholme’s services aren’t limited to knives. He also sharpens scissors, chainsaw blades, and hedge clippers, to name a few. If you have a dull serrated blade, he is one of a handful of people in the country with the training to sharpen it properly.

It may surprise people to learn just how easy and affordable this professional service is. Eric “The Blade” Sharpener makes house calls, is a vendor at the Backyard Markets, and even does private events where he teaches a Knife Skills 101 course. For more information, his website and socials are listed below.

Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors

The Stylish Home Design Trend That Will Have You Saying, “Oh, Grow Up!”

Humans have always had a penchant for propagation. Since king Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century BC, artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls”. Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall”. Designers have dubbed them “statement walls”. But for our purposes here, we will refer to them as the architects do - as “vertical gardens”.

A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade.

The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well.

Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress.

Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well.

As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast growing, and low maintenance. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden.

The Magic Dragon

Make a Statement With This Stylish Cocktail

INSTRUCTIONS

Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.

Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up!  Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).
