UNIQUE SPACES FOR ALL OCCASIONS HILLSIDE GARDENS: WEDDINGS, EVENTS + CONCERTS, OH MY!
20
O UR TOWN | ENTERTA INME NT
From dairy farm to neighborhood nursery to enchanting wedding and event center, Hillside Gardens has been a long-time Colorado Springs staple and beloved site. Hillside Gardens Wedding and Event Center boasts views of our treasured Rockies and four luscious acres of botanical gardens. It is without a doubt a dream venue for any Colorado bride. With its very own on-site wedding coordinator and planner, Erika Weeks, winning
Gazette Gold for Best of Springs wedding planner of the year, Hillside’s talent alone sets it apart. Visually stunning and full of unique spaces that can accommodate both intimate gatherings and large events, it should come as no surprise that the venue itself also won the Gazette Gold for wedding venue of the year, clearly captivating the local community. BIG VISIONS When brother and sister co-owners Donavan Kennedy and Ashlee Kennedy took over the venue, they had big visions. With Donavan’s wine expertise as a level 3 sommelier and Ashlee’s extensive involvement in the hospitality industry, this gifted duo put their heads together and sought to make Hillside an outstanding venue. Together, they’ve been able to create something unique to Colorado Springs. “We are so fortunate to have some of the most talented and incredible staff in town,” Donavan said. “It’s made a huge difference in making weddings, events, and concerts a staple experience.”
HILLSIDE GARDENS
WEDNESDAY NIGHT CONCERTS Hillside is famous for its concerts on Wednesday nights in the Garden, and Donavan and Ashlee have also set out to make those a stand-out experience, as well. It’s not every day that you can go to an outdoor concert and have five specialty concept bars to choose from, each with their own niche beverages. But at Hillside Gardens, it’s just another Wednesday. “We wanted to create something distinctive and eclectic that reflects our passions and gives people an opportunity to experience how truly special the venue is.” Every Wednesday you can choose from Cactus Jack’s Tequila Bar, a wine bar, a renovated 1970’s trailer bar that serves brews and fun adult beverages and coming soon at the end of the summer, a whiskey bar in an imaginatively revamped silo. Along with the array of beverage choices, you can also experience local food trucks and play outdoor games all while jamming to the talent of the town. Check out their website for their summer concert series and if you have an upcoming event or wedding, be sure to reach out to Hillside Gardens, because as Donavan says, “If you can dream it, we can host it.” Website: hillsidecolorado.com/ Facebook: @HillsideGardensAndNursery Instagram: @hillside_gardens_cos

Colorado-Grown Grapes THE WINERY AT HOLY CROSS ABBEY: EVOLVING ONE SIP AT A TIME
ARTICLE BY SYDNEY E. NELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE ABBEY WINERY

R OA D T R IP | L IFE + CU LTURE
It all started with an exorcism. Well, sort of… Coined as the “Notre Dame of the West,” the gorgeous Cañon City Monastery completed in 1926 was originally home to Benedictine monks. In 2000, a monk from that monastery was called up to the western slopes of Colorado to, shall we say, “clean things up a bit” at a winery being built in Palisade where some suspicious activity was taking place.
SOMETHING GOOD He did clean things up, and in the process of removing something bad, he also discovered something good. Something so good in fact, that he decided to bring it back to his Cañon City monastery to share with his fellow monks. That something? Delectable wine from Colorado-grown grapes. Twenty years later, The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey is one of the most established and prominent wineries in the southern Colorado region, and arguably one of the most beautiful. With countless awards and vast wine selection, once you’ve had a sip it will come as no surprise that Holy Cross even dons the acclaimed title of “Winery of the Year” by the Colorado Association of Viticulture and Enology.
A COLORADO GEM With a combined knack for business, love for wine, and affinity for involvement in the community, owner Larry Oddo and his stellar team have evolved Holy Cross Winery into a Colorado gem. Holy Cross is a prominent beacon to the far reaches of the Colorado wine community. Hosting a grand tasting every year, where people come far and wide to sip and experience the bright, bold flavors of Colorado grapes. Holy Cross also offers daily elevated tastings at its beautiful outdoor venue.
ALL OF THEM Oddo laughs when asked which wine is his favorite. “All of them,” he says. “That’s like asking someone to pick a favorite child. There is a time and place for every wine and that’s a part of the reason our selection is so special: There is something for everyone. Yet regardless of preference, there is one thing we can promise and Holy Cross, and that’s that our heart and soul goes into every single wine.” Website: abbeywinery.com/ Facebook: @abbeywinery Instagram: @theabbeywinery JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Rangerettes: A Colorado Springs Tradition since 1957 ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HAMERSHOCK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN GAUCK PHOTOGRAPHY
Precision Riders Prepare for Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo
26
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON
One of the highlights of the annual Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo is watching the Rangerettes, a group of precision riders who just happen to be 12- to 20-year-old girls. “The girls are not just pretty faces,” said Director Chris Herman. “They are all cowgirls at heart. They work hard and do not give up when things get rough. They are true horsemen and work to perfect the partnership between themselves, their horse, and their teammates.” This year, the elite team will ride in five parades, perform in 10 rodeos including Pikes Peak or Bust and attend multiple other western events. In short, they are ambassadors to western values.
THE GIRLS To try out for the team, a girl must be invited by a Range Rider, drill master or current Rangerette to attend practice as a guest and pass a safety test on her horse. After she attends an orientation and participates in at least three practices, the drillmaster may invite her to test for the team. The Rangerettes began this season with only four girls returning from the previous year. Those four— Aneka Normandie, Amelia Tilden, Maddy Norton and Hailey Herman—are this season’s officers, helping lead an 18-member team. (Bylaws limit the maximum team size to 20 for safety.) Aneka has been riding horses since she was six years old. Four years ago, she joined the Rangerettes. “It was really seeing my sister try out and bond with the team that made me want to try out,” says Aneka, now 16. “Plus, all the shiny outfits and glitter didn’t hurt.” She has learned “amazing leadership skills” and valuable lessons, including how to handle anxiety before a
big performance or event. But her favorite part of the program is all the long-lasting friendships she has made. Hailey, 14, agrees. “When becoming a Rangerette, I didn’t just get 17 new teammates, I got 17 new sisters.” Maddy, 15, says she was “very introverted” when she started as a Rangerette two years ago and has gained priceless confidence from being part of the group. “My favorite part is the way that Rangerettes makes you go out of your comfort zone.”
AN HONORED TRADITION The Pikes Peak Range Riders formed the Rangerettes in 1957 when PPRR member Mark Reiner proposed creating a drill team made up of Range Riders’ daughters and granddaughters. The group promotes the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and always has been heavily involved in the community. The total number of Rangerettes apparently never has been tracked, but hundreds of girls have been part of the organization over the years. The newest additions: Cassidy Erway, Skilly DeLoach, Madison Finlay-Wagner, Kailyn Deline, Makena Norton, Courtney Edwards, Finnley Duvall, Delaney Fields, Gretta Dickson, Bethany Grint, Abigail Pearce, Alysa Reddecliff, Izzy Colodny and Mady Warner. With so many new members, Drill Master Grant Durham and Assistant Drill Master Anna Durham have been working tirelessly to prepare the girls for their many events. The Rangerettes is the number one producer of eligible candidates for the Girl of the West, with 37 former Rangerettes going on to become rodeo queens. Four former members also have become Miss Rodeo Colorado. CONTINUED >

“ It is so special to me because it is at PPOB that girls tend to bond the most and ride the hardest. The atmosphere of the crowd is unlike anything you have ever experienced before.” Their biggest event is Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, which got even bigger and more prestigious this year.
PIKES PEAK OR BUST Pikes Peak or Bust will host the National Finals Rodeo Open in 2022. That means a $1 million purse – one of the top-paying rodeos in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit. Only the top ranked cowboys and cowgirls in each circuit will be invited to compete. Get your tickets soon. Organizers expect sell-out crowds. “The excitement for the Rangerettes about the rodeo is beyond words!” Herman says. “This is the event they work so hard for and it’s a chance for all of them to show off the fruits of their labor. The Rangerettes get to open the rodeo this year, busting into the area at approximately 6:48 pm every night.” The week of PPOB is exhausting for Rangerettes (and their parents), Herman says. “We begin nightly practice and grand entry practice on the Sunday before the rodeo.

... They run in all five rodeos at PPOB, as well as attend the Girls of the West Banquet, assist with the mutton bustin’ and sign autographs nightly.” Exhausted or not, the girls love it! Rangerette officer Amelia Tilden, 15, has been riding her horse, Abigail, at least six hours per week, preparing. “I am very excited to perform at Pikes Peak or Bust because the crowd is one of my favorites!” Aneka adds, “Pikes Peak or Bust is the most special and important rodeo in the world to me and keeps me motivated through anything. It is so special to me because it is at PPOB that girls tend to bond the most and ride the hardest. CREATE SPACES YOU'LL USE JULIE KAY DESIGN CAN HELP CREATE THE BACKDROP FOR NEW MEMORIES The structure of a house can be considered the bricks, mortar, nails and beams. Faced with stucco, siding, trim and paint. But a home; a home is so much more than that. It is compiled of memories, textures, colors and smells. A home is collected. It is lived in. A home feels. A home reminds, it evokes.
BACKDROP FOR MEMORIES One might remember the one-directional-velvet cushions of a couch adorned with autumnal colors (mostly brown) depicting barns or small woodland creatures surrounded by leaves. Maybe it was a slightly scratchy crocheted throw on the armrest or avocado-colored appliances. Although these were strong stylistic choices of the time period (and not suggested for a come-back) these things evoke memories. Perhaps it was playing board games on the couch with a grandparent or snuggling in the throw watching a VHS tape. Maybe the avocado-colored appliances bring back memories of an electric knife carving the turkey at a Thanksgiving table, or the patterns on the bowls used to mix cookie batter. The point is, these items fill a house and become the backdrop for the memories that occur within. If you broke into a cold sweat remembering the feel of that couch or started doing a mental inventory of the backdrop in your home, keep reading.
THE EMPTY, ECLECTIC + OUTDATED That terra cotta colored wall in the entry way that you have been meaning to paint since you moved in,
but you can’t quite settle on the right color of greige. Or the Turkish lamp that you brought home from a trip abroad and adore, but can’t quite make fit into your partner’s modern design. Maybe it’s the odd shape of the area between your kitchen and living area that you struggle to appropriately fill because nothing quite fits. Your favorite color is purple, but you worry about how to incorporate it into your space subtly. Perhaps in the recent housing boom, you moved into 4,000 square feet of empty space and need some guidance on how to fill it. Maybe your house is perfect except for one hideously outdated bathroom, or a less-than-functional kitchen. Maybe in the housing boom, you have embraced generational living and are looking for a way to gracefully transform the den and game room into a mother-in-law suite. If any of these examples struck a chord, then you might be looking for an interior designer and not even know it.
CREATING SPACES YOU'LL USE Julie Riggin is passionate about interior design, and feels it is her calling to help people make the most of their spaces. She studied architecture and interior design in school before meeting her husband, the army man. The military lifestyle took them all around the world and Riggin has established herself in each market she has found herself. Specifically, upon moving to Colorado Springs, Riggin found a hole in the market for a storefront and studio. She found that there weren’t many places to go find a unique and on-trend pieces that accent a home perfectly, and she went to work creating that space. CONTINUED >

Julie Kay Design quietly opened its doors in March of 2022, and had a grand open-ing at the beginning of June. Riggin notes that sixty percent of interior design is helping cli-ents shop for those unique pieces. Her hope is for this space to be a go-to for Colorado Springs residents to find t hose p erfect p ieces o r t o order custom furniture. It’s a warm and friendly no-judgment zone where you can find s ome expert help in choosing that just-right piece. Additionally, “we can source anything for anybody,” Riggin states. As she works directly with the manufacturers, she also notes that “anything we have on the floor you will find cheaper than if you find it elsewhere online.” Although the space is beautiful and elegantly put together for a thorough shopping experience, the back of the studio is set up for more. Riggin notes the importance of getting to know her clients personally. Discovering a client’s personality and pulling in their history is key in blending 20 years of things collected along the journey to create a cohesive and functional space. Textures, proportion, color and blank space are all keys to design, but “picking an interior designer is personal,” she states. All of her clients start with a consult. She gets into the space and gets to know the people who live there. “I don’t want to create a space people are never going to use,” she says. With multiple magazine publications as well as just being nominated one of Colorado’s Top Five under 40 in Colorado Homes & Lifestyle Magazine, she is doing it quite well. “This is who I am,” she says humbly, “I was born to do this.” And now she’s here to do it for you, Colorado Springs.

Ever Thought of Joining the
Circus? Dragonfly Aerial Company Invites Public to Fly
ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN MONTALVO PHOTOGRAPHY
36
M UST SE E | FITN ESS
“It’s a process, enjoy the journey to what you might think is the goal then when the goal changes and you are on to the next chapter.” -MISTIA FALLON
With the Air Force Academy and three other Air Force bases located in Colorado Springs, aerial feats are kind of a specialty around here. We see the Air Force Academy parachuters and gliders on a regular basis and get a visit from the Thunderbirds once a year, as well. But Mistia Fallon has introduced another type of aerial feature to our city. Perhaps lesser known, but certainly no less impressive, Dragonfly Aerial Company invites the community to “come fly with us.” What is special about the flight that Fallon offers is that there is something for everyone. Fallon studied dance and theatre in college and then went back to school to study magic and illusion. She ended up working for years as a cruise ship performer, and in an effort to expand the show to better fill the stage, she ventured into the aerial arts.
REAL-LIFE CIRCUS TRAINING If you have ever thought of running away and joining the circus, now is your chance. Dragonfly Aerial Company is a member of the American Youth Circus Organization,
American Circus Educators and the American Circus Alliance. Fallon has had many students who have gone on to perform for Cirque de Soleil; she’s kind of a big deal. The goal is to offer an uplifting, empowering and positive environment to a community that values artistic expression. Athletically, aerial arts will introduce you to muscles you didn’t know you had (or had forgotten you had). It is a mentally challenging activity that uses physics to create shapes, leverage and improve balance. And for those who are serious about staying in the business, Fallon offers her years of practical life-learning experience on how to start a company and all of the intricate details of the entertainment industry.
SAFETY + EDUCATION If safety was the first excuse that came to mind, Dragonfly is one step ahead. Fallon is one of four members on the American Circus Educators Insurance Committee whose focus is on elevating safety guidelines and policies around the nation. Health education, checks and
balances as well as setting standards for safety are her passions. One of the things integrated in the classes at Dragonfly is teaching students how to recognize safety before taking their chances on equipment outside of the studio. Social Circus programs for at-risk youth and providing classes for those with sensory challenges are also passions for Fallon and will be a staple at their newest location on Powers Boulevard and Woodmen Road. Classes for littles, taught by a certified behavioral therapist or classes for those in their 40’s looking for a low impact way to increase strength, balance and flexibility while trying something a little out-of-thebox, Dragonfly Aerial Company truly does have something for everyone. “It’s a process,” Fallon says, “enjoy the journey to what you might think is the goal then when the goal changes and you are on to the next chapter.” Website: dragonflyaerialco.com/ Facebook: @DragonflyAerialCO Instagram: @the.dragonfly.aerial.co

Classic Beauties PORSCHE CLASSICS RESEMBLE FINE WINE... GETTING BETTER WITH AGE
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HAMERSHOCK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PORSCHE COLORADO SPRINGS & SILAS CARTER
Sure, Porsche of Colorado Springs offers a vast selection of stunning new cars. Beautiful showroom, driving simulator, all of the snazzy gear. Cool stuff. But if new isn’t your style, look north. Shhhh… that’s where they keep the Classics.
PORSCHE CLASSIC PROGRAM Colorado Springs is one of just 13 Classic Partners in the United States. It’s an elite designation. Porsche dealers must demonstrate that they have appropriate staffing and facilities to even be considered. Colorado Springs employs three classic-certified technicians—more than anywhere else in the United States. And they expect that number to grow in the next few years.

That’s because classics don’t always arrive in perfect shape. Sometimes, they need a bit of TLC to return them to their former glory. These experts stand ready to restore and preserve. Justin Underwood, pre-owned/ classic manager, understands exactly what they’re getting into when they acquire an older car. Twenty years ago, he started his career with Porsche as a mechanic. “I turned wrenches for six years,” he said. Underwood credits owner Don Hicks for his leadership in landing the Classic Partner designation in 2015. “He’s a true car guy,” Underwood said. “Porsche is his brand.”
AGING GRACEFULLY At any given time, the Colorado Springs dealership has about 18 classic beauties on the lot. “We always keep our eye open for everything,” Underwood said. “We have had all of the really crazy ones. … They seem to fall into our laps.”
Those include a 1965 911, a 1973 911RS and other rarities. But don’t expect every car on the lot to grace the website—you’ll need to stop by to see some of the cars and that’s on purpose. The local team prefers a local buyer for some cars because they’d love to see that jewel again. “We don’t advertise everything,” Underwood said with a grin. He encouraged Pikes Peak region folks to simply pop in or call to see what they have in the showroom and on the lot. Irish green 1964 Porsche 356 SC, anyone? You never know what you’ll find here. Plus, it’s fun to browse The Classic Corner for a quick Porsche history lesson and to explore the relationships between the brand values of tradition and innovation. The mechanics in the Colorado Springs shop typically recondition newly acquired cars, making them safe to drive, then wait to hear the future owner’s preferences before making cosmetic changes. “We kind of want the next owner to be part of that,” Underwood said.
WHO BUYS A CLASSIC? Underwood said their clients generally fall into three categories: DIYers, those who enjoy partnering with the service center to make the car their own and those who choose to buy a vehicle that already has been perfectly restored and is ready to drive off the lot. They cater to all three. Many classic buyers are existing new Porsche owners who recognize the beauty and nostalgia associated with the older vintages. Underwood and his associates walk each potential buyer through the pros and cons of a classic to make sure it’s more than a fleeting trip down memory lane. “There are some people who love the idea, but they probably shouldn’t buy,” he said. Classics require a bit more time and effort than new cars and Underwood’s job is to make sure every client is well informed and thrilled with the purchase. He asks
potential buyers to think about what they want to use the car for and whether they have experience with classics. But sometimes, he said, “you’ve just got to get in it and drive it.” If a classic seems like a good fit, the experts can help narrow the choices down to the best vintages for that particular client’s lifestyle.

EXPLORING ON HORSEBACK Academy Riding Stables: Preserving an Important Piece of Region's Heritage ARTICLE BY KAREN MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARRY MARRY PHOTOGRAPHY
Our dusty, sun-kissed Colorado Springs has always made a concerted effort to illustrate our western-rooted life – leather chaps worn by the cowboys, perfectly broken-in atop their sweetly majestic horses that so much of our state was explored upon. This isn’t lost at Academy Riding Stables where the activity, the animals and the heritage are honored, reveled in and cherished. The historic role horses played in becoming familiar with the land is something held close by many and some would swear it remains the best way to see where we live.
THE BEAUTY OF HORSEBACK Horses have a way of stirring a feeling in us. They make us want to press our feet into the soles of our boots, find our favorite pair of Levis and saddle up for an hour (or maybe two) as we ride through our breathtaking piece of the country. Academy Riding Stables offers this experience through one of our hot spots: Garden of the Gods. If you’ve never ridden a day in your life, or if horses are a part of your heartbeat, there is a saddle for you here. The guides really treasure what they do. Day in, day out, they love these creatures. They take pride in saddling them up and helping others hoist upon their saddles in order to familiarize themselves with the Garden of the Gods area.
FUN FOR ALL AGES As you weave throughout Garden of the Gods park, your guide has secrets of the land to unearth in the midst of enjoying the views, the friends or family you’re with, the guests you are showing around, or while you’re spicing things up after having lived here a while. And if your littles love ponies as much as you love your littles, Academy Riding Stables has the sweetest little saddles for their family of ponies. For your two- to seven-year-olds, this is the perfect activity to mix up the week and it is not one they’ll soon forget.
