Turning setbacks into

Kids & Pets Issue

Some issues are easy to write. This one, I got to live. When we sat down to plan this month's theme, "Kids and Pets" felt like an easy choice on paper. Then I started thinking about our own house and realized how much of our life here has been measured out in both.

Lesa and I raised two kids — Allie and Parker — and allowing them to be influenced by this area is still one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Allie went on to UNC, married her husband Jared (a former Army Blackhawk pilot, now working through law school at Cal — we're still getting used to introducing our son-in-law as "counselor" someday). Parker headed to TCU, came home an EMT, and starts his paramedic program this fall. Different paths, same roots.

And then there's been the parade of dogs. Tis, named for Waymon Tisdale. Roy, after one of the great Hall of Fame safeties to ever wear Crimson and Cream. Ella, whose name origin has been lost to family legend — nobody actually remembers, and at this point we've stopped asking. And now Riley, our current dog, who is definitely not named after a former OU coach (OK, she is a little crazy and changing her name when she was a year old just felt dangerous…).  So, DEFINITELY not a former coach. We stand by that.

I share all this because it's the same reason this magazine exists. The people and pets that make up a household are the real measure of a community — the doctors who care for your kids, the vets who care for your dogs, the small moments that add up to a life well-lived wherever you are.  And now, thankfully here.

This issue is for every family, human and four-legged, that calls Cleveland County home.

(RE)INTRODUCING CLEVELAND COUNTY CITY LIFESTYLE

A REFRESH FOR AN ALREADY GREAT MAGAZINE!

Home has a way of calling you back.

I grew up in this community. I walked the halls of Norman schools, cheered on the Sooners, and built the kind of roots that no amount of years away can fully sever. So when the opportunity came to purchase Cleveland County City Lifestyle, it wasn’t a business decision so much as it was an answer to that call. Lesa and I came home — for good — and this magazine is how we plan to invest in the place that made us.

Let me introduce myself. I’m Jeff Weber, and for the past four decades I’ve had a front-row seat to some of the most transformative moments in media and technology. I joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Company — which later became AT&T — straight out of the University of Oklahoma in 1986 and spent 25 years there, ultimately rising to President of Content and Advertising. During that time, I was one of the architects of U-verse, helping to build it from a blank sheet of paper into one of the country’s largest TV platforms, with more than five million subscribers and a revenue exceeding $12 billion annually. It was a remarkable ride, and it taught me everything about what great content, great brands, and connected communities can become.

Lesa
Me and the Golden Hat, 2023.

After AT&T, I took the helm at Zone·tv, a pioneering streaming company that used artificial intelligence and human curation to deliver a genuinely personalized television experience to millions of households through the world’s top pay TV operators. From there, I co-founded The Dubs Group with my daughter, Allie.  We were very early in the world of NIL, and that led to the opportunity that brought me back to my Sooner roots in a different way: as CEO of 1Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma’s official NIL initiative — the first university-backed collective of its kind in the country. We set a new standard for how student-athletes and fans could be connected through real value, not just donations.

Through it all, I’ve had the same partner for 40 years this July. My wife Lesa is not just the person I share my life with; she is my partner in this business. Cleveland County City Lifestyle is a family endeavor in every sense of the word, and that matters to us deeply.

Now, about this magazine. I want to be honest with you: it has drifted. A publication this good, serving a community this vibrant, deserves better — and we intend to deliver it. My vision is straightforward: a local, luxury magazine that lifts this community,

connects readers with exceptional brands, and tells the stories of the remarkable people who live and work right here among us.

We’ve already begun. Next month, you’ll notice the debut of  City List, our new best-of section featuring categories that reflect what’s best about life in Cleveland County. Each month, two to five categories will shine a light on the businesses and professionals our community trusts most. In the spirit of our Kids and Pets theme, we will feature top Pediatricians, Veterinarians, Sweet Treats, Orthodontists, and Doggy Day Care providers. We’ve also launched  Born and Bred, a profile series dedicated to the people who are from here, built something here, and chose to stay — or come back. (You will soon meet our first subject, Mike Burr.)

There is more to come. Much more.

I spent decades building world-class products for national and global audiences. This time, I’m building something for my neighbors. For this community. For home.

Welcome to the next chapter of Cleveland County City Lifestyle. I’m glad to be here.

Like Jeremiah, have no fear.
Riley and Roy.

BORNand BRED

Mike Burr: Norman Legacy, Wall Street Career & Family

There is a certain kind of person who leaves a place and makes it proud. Mike Burr is that kind of person.

Born and raised in Norman, Mike grew up in the long shadow of a university — which in this part of Oklahoma is not a burden but a gift. His father, David A. Burr, served for many years as a Vice President at the University of Oklahoma, and his fingerprints on that institution run deep. In 1961, at the direction of OU President George Lynn Cross, David Burr established the President’s Leadership Class — a freshman scholarship program designed to identify Oklahoma’s most promising young leaders and keep them rooted in the state they called home. More than six decades later, the program is still going strong, having shaped thousands of Sooners into some of Oklahoma’s most accomplished citizens. His mother, Carol Burr was the Sooner Magazine editor for nearly four decades.

It would be easy to say the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. But in Mike’s case, the apple rolled all the way to Wall Street — and still found its way back to its roots.

Mike attended Norman High School, graduating in 1982. He was a basketball player, the kind of kid who understood competition, teamwork, and what it means to show up every day and put in the work. When it came time for college, there was never really a question about where he was headed. He enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he joined Delta Tau Delta fraternity and — in a moment that must have carried

particular meaning for his family — was selected as a recipient of the very scholarship his father had founded. To be chosen for the President’s Leadership Class is a distinction. To be chosen for a program your own father built is something else entirely.

Mike graduated from OU in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, with honors.

What came next was a career that would have looked ambitious on paper and proved even more impressive in practice. Mike joined JPMorgan, one of the most storied financial institutions in the world and spent more than two decades there — eventually rising to Managing Director, overseeing multiple regional offices and nationwide coverage of the Middle Market Investment Banking division. It is the kind of tenure that speaks not just to talent, but to trust. You don’t last twenty-plus years at JPMorgan by accident.

From there, Mike continued to build. He served as Executive Director and Vice Chairman at Challenger Capital Group, providing investment banking services to middle market companies. He moved on to Fifth Third Securities as Group Senior Managing Director and Head of Mergers and Acquisitions. Today, he serves as Senior Managing Director and Head of the Central Region at East West Bank, where he leads the firm’s presence across offices in Texas, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles, delivering what the bank calls “Bridge Banking” — connecting U.S. businesses to international markets and opportunity.

“Norman produced him. OU shaped him...”

It is a career defined by the ability to see around corners, to bring people and capital together, and to build something lasting. Those are, when you think about it, exactly the skills his father modeled at the University of Oklahoma all those years ago.

Yet, no matter how high his professional star rose, Mike’s heart remained firmly anchored to his hometown. He frequently credits his success to the foundation laid right here in Cleveland County.

“OU and Norman holds a special place in our hearts, as my wife and I are both proud alums, and it prepared me for a successful career in financial services. My parents set the foundation for a lifelong commitment to the university and the Norman community.” Mike reflects.

True to his roots, Mike has consistently looked for ways to lift up the next generation. Whether mentoring young professionals or generously giving back to his OU’s Price College of Business to support future business leaders, his career is defined as much by his generosity as it is by his financial success.

Through all of it — the moves, the markets, the milestones — Mike has had Jan, formerly Jan Johnson by his side. The two have been married for forty years this summer, an achievement that in today’s world deserves its own standing ovation. Together they raised three children: Haley, Riley, and Charlie, all graduates of OU.

That is the story of Mike Burr in broad strokes. Norman produced him. OU shaped him. And a career built on integrity, relationships, and hard-nosed financial expertise carried him to the upper ranks of American investment banking.

The Born and Bred series exists because we believe this community produces exceptional people — and that those people deserve to be celebrated. Mike Burr is proof of exactly that. His father and mother helped build the University of Oklahoma into the institution it is today. His own career is a testament to what that university, and this town, can launch into the world.

Boomer Sooner, Mike. Norman is proud.

“The Born and Bred series exists because we believe this community produces exceptional people.”

Set your schedule. Make an impact. Build a life you’re proud of.

Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you?

Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction.

Coaches Corner : Jennie Baranczyk

Home Court Advantage: Meet the Baranczyks

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KYLIE CALDWELL

BUILDING A PROGRAM, BUILDING A HOME.

OU Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jennie Baranczyk introduces her real roster — her family's starting five, plus a terrier named Brownie — and shows what it means to build a program, and a home, at the same time.

Ask anyone in the Baranczyk house what Jennie does for a living, and "basketball coach" is only half the answer. At home, she's outnumbered — a husband, three kids, and a very opinionated terrier. Outside it, she's the head coach of University of Oklahoma women's basketball, and by now, that résumé speaks for itself: Big 12 titles, a Sweet 16 run, a move to the SEC, one of the most respected programs in the country.

What's less known is what happens once she's home. Talk to the Baranczyks long enough, and one thing becomes clear: the same instincts that built Baranczyk's program are the ones running her household. Coaching and parenting, for her, were never really two different jobs.

MEET SCOTT

Long before Norman, there was a bar in Milwaukee.

Scott Baranczyk — a Green Bay native and former athlete at UW-La Crosse — walked in wearing a Wisconsin shirt to watch an Iowa State game with a group that included Jennie, then an assistant coach at Marquette.

"Who does that?" she remembers thinking. She walked over, told him as much, and walked away.

"That was the first thing she said to me," Scott says. They married about a year and a half later, in May 2009 — 17 years ago this spring.

THE TRADE-OFF: ‘HE’S ALL IN’

When Jennie took her first head coaching job at Drake in 2012 — two weeks from her due date with Eli — Scott left his own career behind to make it work. He started a business from scratch, one flexible enough to move wherever her job took them next. Scott doesn't dress it up. "There was stress. The first couple years, we were just building," he says. "But it helps that Jenny understood the passion I had." Today, he's the one running the household while she's on the road. Asked to sum him up in a word, Jennie doesn't hesitate: "He's had to sacrifice a lot. He's all in."

MEET THE KIDS: A REF-YELLER, A SIDELINE COACH, AND A CONCESSIONS CONNOISSEUR

If you've followed OU basketball at all, you may already know Jordi, the eldest daughter. In 2023, ESPN cameras and a live mic caught her — then 8 years old — coaching the Sooners from the stands during the NCAA Tournament, questioning officiating

calls and shouting encouragement with the conviction of someone twice her age. The clip went viral.

"I'm not mad," her older brother Eli deadpanned about the attention Jordi got. "I'm a little jealous.”

It's a fair division of labor. Jennie has described her kids' game-day roles the same way for years: Eli yells at the refs, Jordi coaches, Hope holds down the concession stand. Because some things never change.

One tradition has stuck: all three kids pick their own jersey numbers, after specific players they've loved. "They're never going to forget them," Jennie said. "Those people have impacted their lives. It means everything."

Asked to sum each of them up in a word, it’s easy for Jennie: Eli, a worker. Jordi, strong-willed. Hope, compassionate and driven; the creative of the family.

BROWNIE, THE DOG JENNIE SWORE SHE'D NEVER GET

For years, Jennie held the line: no dog. She doesn’t proclaim herself as an animal person, and between recruiting trips and road games, it didn't seem fair to a pet. Scott — who runs a dog-training products company — eventually won her over, and had already picked the breed by the time she agreed.

Enter Brownie, a two-year-old Patterdale Terrier, named by Eli over a few objections. She goes on a walk through the neighborhood every day, and travels with the family on the road — a fixture on team trips since she was a puppy.

"She goes with us everywhere," Scott says. She's not always the best with other dogs, but at home she's

claimed four different lookout spots around the house, including the walk-in closet.

"All I have to do is say, 'Where's Mom?'" Scott said, "and she'll go running to the front door."

THE BARANCZYK HOUSE RULES

It's a philosophy that mirrors what she preaches to her players, and Jennie is the first to admit the two roles have blurred into one. "I think coaching affects your parenting," she says. "You see these strong women, and you want your kids to be strong. And I think there's probably more of a — " she pauses, searching for the word — "mom that helps you see the players differently than transactional pieces.”

Ask what actually holds the family together through a schedule like theirs, and Jennie doesn't point to a system. She, and the others, point to faith. "We definitely wouldn't have made it without our faith," she said. The family is Catholic and attends Mass most weekends near campus.

Most house rules, for the record, have nothing to do with basketball.

HERE'S THE BARANCZYK HOUSE RULES, IN JENNIE'S WORDS:

• Brush your teeth

• No phones in the bedrooms

• Make your bed

• Get outside

• Try to eat well

"We're just really normal," Jennie said.

Jordi, sitting nearby, isn't so sure. "It's different," she said. There's a level of pressure other kids her age don't carry.

Her mother doesn't disagree. She just doesn't let it define the house.

THE ART OF THE UPSCALE

The secret to an elevated PB&J isn’t complicated—it’s all about premium ingredients and creative combinations. Swap that white bread for artisanal sourdough, brioche, or even croissants. Trade processed jelly for fresh fruit compotes, gourmet preserves, or actual fresh berries that burst with flavor.

COMBOS TO Try:

CREATIVE COMBINATIONS THAT HIT DIFFERENT

The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread

The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices

The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thickcut bread

The Grown-Up Classic: Almond butter, fig jam, and thinly sliced pears on multigrain bread

The Breakfast Crossover: Cashew butter, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle of granola on cinnamon raisin bread

The Tropical Twist: Coconut butter, mango preserves, and toasted coconut flakes on Hawaiian sweet bread

The Chocolate Dream: Dark chocolate almond butter, raspberry preserves, and fresh mint leaves on whole wheat

The Savory Surprise: Natural peanut butter, grape jelly, and a thin layer of cream cheese with everything bagel seasoning

PRO TIPS FOR LUNCHBOX SUCCESS

Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible. Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.

THE BOTTOM LINE

An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.
