The Pioneer Library System’s PLS Reads returns in March, and readers have selected the novel The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, by Wes Moore, as the featured book for this year’s initiative.

Each year, PLS identifies a topic that's relevant on a community, state and national level. Members of the community select a book to be read and the library provides programming throughout the year to explore and discuss the issue further.

The topic chosen for PLS Reads 2021 is poverty, and the book will be Wes Moore’s 2010 novel on the lives of two young men from the same neighborhood who share a name but quite a different story.

One goes on to success and fortune, while the other ends up serving a life sentence for murder.

For the past 14 years, PLS has participated in both The Big Read and PLS Reads, inspired by the National Endowment for the Arts. Activities now continue under the “PLS Reads” theme.

STARTED 2021 WITH LOTS TO CELEBRATE. Though the Sooners ultimately lost the contest against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Jan. 3, the game was one of Madi’s most outstanding performances of the season to date. The 6’0” guard scored 45 points in the contest, shattering the school’s single-game scoring record and earning her the honor of being named the Big 12 player of the week. This performance also represents the most points scored in a Big 12 game and the second highest score in Division I basketball to date this season.

“It was definitely one of my most proud moments as a player,” Madi reflects. “I think it shows the hard work that I have put into the player that I have become.”

Madi is averaging a team-leading 20.6 points this season and has firmly established her presence as a powerhouse on the court, scoring her 1000th career point in January.

“We are working really hard to put out good basketball during these confusing times,” Madi adds.

Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Madi came to Norman in the 2018-19 season as a highly anticipated five-star recruit.

“It means a lot to me to be playing at OU,” she says. “Not everyone gets this opportunity, so it really is a blessing.”

Madi has capitalized on her opportunities during her career at OU, leading the Sooners in rebounds during her sophomore year and scoring double digits in 27 of 30 games in the 2019-20 season.

Now in her Junior year, Madi is the Sooners’ leading scorer and is looking to expand her role on the team.

“What I enjoy most about being a student-athlete is the relationships I get to build with my teammates,” she explains. “I enjoy the time that I get to spend with the coaches and other students.”

Her contributions to the team have not gone unnoticed by the coaching staff.

“Madi has spent two years working to get consistently good, if not great, at a couple of things,” observes Colton Coale, assistant coach for the Oklahoma women’s basketball program. “This year, she’s figuring out a million different ways to get to those couple of things, both one-on-one and with her teammates. It’s been the most fun I’ve ever had coaching. She’s elite, and she’s just getting started.”

In February, Madi was one of only 16 players across the nation added to the Dawn Staley Award watchlist by the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia. The award recognizes the most outstanding collegiate guards across the country and is made up of players who exemplify excellence in ball handling and scoring and demonstrate a will to win. Madi is one of only two Big 12 players to receive the honor this season.

Madi says she feels at home in Norman and values the college-town feel and its close proximity to all the places to enjoy in Oklahoma City. Off the court, she enjoys watching Netflix, YouTube and, of course, basketball games on ESPN. As she begins to plan for her senior year and life after college, Madi says that she aims to play professionally after graduation. She also hopes that she has helped pave the way for young girls hoping to follow in her footsteps.

“My best advice is to make sure you find the right fit for you,” she recommends. “Take the time to find your game and don’t rush the process.”

As Madi continues to grow as both a leader on the team and a prolific point scorer, OU is proving to be a perfect fit for her.

Stance Coffee, points out Keenan, is the hotel’s own, responsibly sourced brand.

Five years ago, on June 19, 2016, area couple Kristen and Jacoby Gonzales went to check on their infant daughter, where she was discovered dead in her crib.

The cause was determined to be SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

After Penelope’s tragic passing, the couple sought for a way to bring some meaning to their loss, as well as a way to help prevent this from occurring to others.

Life, as they say, happens. A year and a half after Penelope’s passing, the couple joyfully welcomed into their home twin boys, joining Penelope’s older sister, Emmaline. A year ago, Kristen joined Prime Realty Inc. as a Realtor, and her husband enrolled in school full time; he will apply to dental college this summer. It also took the couple some trial and error as they navigated the complex path to creating a nonprofit foundation.

However, the couple never put their dream aside, and they are now moving full steam ahead on what they have dubbed the “Penny Project,” which was formally established in December 2020.

Through the foundation, the couple hope to provide as many low-income families as possible with the Owlet Smart Sock, which monitors a child's heart rate and O2 levels; if the heart rate or O2 drops below the norm, it sets off an alarm to alert the parents. The socks can be worn from birth to 12 months.
