Rotary Clubs’ Popular Le Tour de Vin Just Around the Corner

POP A CORK, GRAB SOME GREAT FOOD AND SPEND THE EVENING HELPING YOUR COMMUNITY. Le Tour de Vin, a powerful collaboration of the Cross Timbers, Sooner, Norman Noon and Legacy Rotary clubs, puts on this yearly event to raise money for various local organizations. I recently talked with Joe Gil, executive director, about the event’s history and the search for a new organization to help in the future.

Rotary, the world’s first service club, is 114 years old, and in Norman, members of the four Rotary clubs number nearly 35,000. Over 200 countries come together to create a global network of businesses and professional leaders that volunteer their time and talents to philanthropic endeavors locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Le Tour De Vin is a wine-tasting and fundraising event that has been a yearly tradition since 2003, when Cross Timbers Rotary offered a tasting event that included music, silent and live auctions, hors d’oeuvres from Norman restaurants and discussion among a diverse group of wine lovers. This first year was an attempt to raise money for the American Red Cross and other club philanthropies.

The event raised nearly $40,000 and left locals clamoring for more.

Out of the festival, a second program was born: the Costume Contest. Through this program, free Halloween costumes are provided to children enrolled in Center for Children and Families programs. MORE WOMEN HAVE BECOME ECONOMIC FORCES WITH THE MODERN WORKPLACE. All of those college degrees women are earning these days and the evolution of the family structure, along with the fact that women live longer than men, have all led to a rise in women being the primary person responsible for planning and maintaining their financial future. Mothers alone contribute almost $1 million to the U.S. economy, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 survey. Further, the Senate’s Joint Economic Committee reports that women provide nearly 40 percent of the household earnings for families with working mothers.

Women have become a major economic force, changing the modern workforce and making up 47% of all workers. Today, 70% of mothers with children under the age of 18 are working–up from 47% in 1975, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This increase of women in the workplace has fueled U.S. economic growth. The economy is 13.5% bigger than it would have been if women hadn’t increased the time they spent working for pay since the 1970s, translating to an additional $2 trillion in gross domestic product, according to the 2016 Economic Report of the President. What’s more, a study from the McKinsey Global Institute found that $12 trillion could be added to the global GDP, the value of all the goods and services produced in a country, by 2025 by advancing women’s equality in our society and the workplace.

Many of these breadwinner women are leading their family’s financial futures. In a recent study by Allianz Life, 53% of women said they are responsible for managing their household’s long-term savings and investments. Further, 67% of women reported that becoming more knowledgeable and involved in managing their finances made a difference in their quality of life.

Soulmate’s Death Leads Man on Mission to Help O thers Deal With Grief

WHEN ROY SLOOTHEER’S WIFE, BECKY, WHOM HE MARRIED IN 1999, WAS DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE IV CANCER IN JULY 2012, HE TOOK CARE OF HER “HEART AND SOUL.” At the time, he was an ER nurse and paramedic specialist with a local hospital and had just started the Family Nurse Practitioner program. In cooperation with her oncologist, a natural and dietary approach was established, and he placed himself in charge of her treatment plan, which included some progressive treatment options. Unfortunately, not all members of Becky’s family agreed with the couple’s collaborative approach, and ties with them were eventually severed.

“After Becky’s passing on Sept. 2, 2013, I was confronted with the lack of support for those who are grieving,” Roy recalls.

He additionally is working on four books, a guide on how to deal with a loved one's passing, a second that describes his personal view about souls and their connection and why it so difficult to sometimes deal with the loss of a soulmate/loved one, a third aimed at parents dealing with the grief of small children as well as their own, and an autobiography about Becky’s battle with cancer and the battles they faced.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in the Netherlands; however, the U.S. government did not recognize the degree, so he earned one here as well. His launched his career in the Netherlands as a social worker for a medium-sized municipality.

He then worked in the insurance/financial services field. In 1995, at the age of 32, he immigrated to the United States to work for a small financial planning firm in Des Moines and later worked as a district manager with a large insurance group in the same vicinity.

While working as a local volunteer fire department volunteer, Roy earned his Paramedic Specialist certificate, and in 2006, he decided to pursue a career in the medical field as a nurse practitioner. He earned an associate degree in nursing, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing, and has been working as a family nurse practitioner since 2016.

Roy remarried in 2015. He and his wife, Amber, now live in Moore (they are building a new house there) with his two boys and Amber’s daughter, Bella, from a previous marriage.

BY ROY SLOOTHEER I have been thinking recently about what motivated me to form Cope with Grief. This morning while I was running, I discovered the true reason (I think a lot while running—some time for myself). Here is what I came up with.

God placed Becky on my path. He motivated me to take care of her while she was battling her most fearsome fight. God made me hold her hand and guide her through the path of darkness toward the light. I was the one blessed to walk beside her during her life; battle with her on the battlefield; and hold her sweet body close to mine and kiss her tender lips when her soul left her broken body when she moved from this world to the next. I was the blessed one to call her soul-mate.

God placed all this on my path to accomplish something higher.

Cope with Grief is His mission for me. He placed this in front of me, so I can do what I do best—for what I was placed on this earth for by Him: to help others understand the purpose of grief, the pain it brings and the beauty it reveals—to help others understand those that are grieving and in pain—to help others understand the purpose of a soul.

I have to pursue this mission. I have no choice because He placed me here, at this moment in time, at this location, with a divine purpose to help others that I cannot deny. I most follow my heart.

01 “LIFE IN EVERY DROP.” That’s what you get in every bottle of organic cold-pressed juice and freshly made smoothies at Organic Squeeze, which opened to enthusiastic crowds in January 2014 in Nichols Hills and continues to draw devotees of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels.

Cleveland County residents soon will get a chance to find out what all the rage is about, as the second Organic Squeeze will open in Norman’s Brookhaven Village this summer.

I spoke recently with three very enthusiastic people connected with this venture: Robert Rhodes, managing partner and Organic Squeeze founder; Tracy Smith O’Neal, managing partner, head of retail operations for the business and project design manager for Hal Smith Restaurants; and Whitney McClendon, managing partner and former owner/operator of Provision Kitchen, a popular restaurant that was located across from Organic Squeeze in Nichols Hill but is now an integral part of Organic Squeeze. (More about that last bit in a bit.)

Tracy, who just happens to be the daughter of well-known restaurant entrepreneur Hal Smith (she has worked for the HSR since she was 15), says she’s eager to strike out on her own with this new endeavor. “I’ve been wanting to launch a healthy concept in Norman, and now it’s finally coming to fruition. I’m completely confident with this merger and am excited to see how far we can grow!”

The team is particularly excited about the introduction of the Provision Kitchen line of healthy entrees and snacks to their operation.

Robert says the decision to incorporate Provision Kitchen into Organic Squeeze’s operations was, well, organic. “We saw real potential synergy among the two brands,” he says. “I think a lot of people will be interested to know what happened to Provision Kitchen—that we have partnered and now they can find the wonderful, healthy meals at Organic Squeeze.”

Approximately half a dozen signature Provision Kitchen entrees will be available for purchase at Organic Squeeze. The entrees will be offered in to-go containers, marked with a “use by” date, and ready to be prepared at home or work in the microwave or oven, for a very reasonable price of $10 or less.

“We will have lunch/dinner entrees that are fully cooked, portioned in microwave- and oven-safe containers that are ready to heat and eat at your convenience,” Whitney says. Entrees examples include Herbed Chicken, made with organic chicken, a potato/cauliflower mash and roasted lemon broccoli, and Grass-fed Beef Chili. Snack examples include sprouted almonds, almond butter chocolate chip bars, peanut butter protein balls, gluten-free organic chocolate chip cookies and chocolate avocado mousse.
