Williamsburg, presented Averie with a plaque and a $100 prize during opening ceremonies. Averie also received a citation from her state senator, Rob Standridge. Averie interviewed grandparents in preparation for her essay, which told the stories of her ancestor, Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the renowned anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and of her great-great grandfather, who immigrated to the United States from Russia to escape religious persecution.

Also recognized were several contest finalists, who received certificates of merit. Among these was Travis Clark, Houchin Elementary School, and Julianne Hoang, Fisher Elementary School, both in Moore.

PLS READS INITIATIVE LAUNCHES The Pioneer Library System brings its PLS Reads initiative into its communities during April, with a pair of novels for readers to experience.

Small Great Things, by Jodi Picoult, tells the racially tense story of a labor and delivery nurse faced with a moral dilemma and how it changes her life and career forever.

The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, looks at a high school student and the two worlds she has to move between: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the suburban prep school she attends.

A featured event of the PLS Reads is a movie showing at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Norman’s Sooner Theatre. It's based on The Hate U Give and will feature introductory remarks before the presentation.

In addition, libraries will feature information on read-alikes and other similar books to these two, and scholar-led discussions of the books will be featured throughout the system. Copies of the books will be available at the libraries for those attending book discussions as supplies last.

ON JUNE 6, 1944, AND DURING THAT LONG, HOT AND HARD SUMMER TO FOLLOW, MEN YOUNG AND OLD CAME TO NORMANDY FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO DEFEAT NAZISM AND RE-ESTABLISH FREEDOM. Throughout this coming summer, Normandy, located in northern France, will lend respect and remembrance through a series of rich and unprecedented celebrations and ceremonies to bring the memory of this tragic period of history to life.

Preparations on a vast scale started months before the morning of June 6 in southern England. The Allies had divided the 60-mile coastal stretch into five sectors, code named Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah. Out west at Omaha and Utah, American forces landed with fierce bravery and pure gut determination. D-Day has come to be seen as a great triumph for the Allies, but that doesn’t mean those who landed didn’t encounter tough German resistance and suffer some terrible tragedies from the start.

Bentley Hedges, founder of Bentley Hedges Travel Service in 1970, has traveled worldwide with amazing recollections of historical sites, grand hotels and sailing on cruise ships that carry anywhere from 100 to 6,000 people. But, he has never had the opportunity to personally pay his respects to those who took part in the D-Day Landing, including family friends and family members who were at Normandy. Bentley’s brother Harry, a staff sergeant and a tail gunner on a B29 in the Army Air Corp, served in World War II in the South Pacific Theatre. He was the only survivor when his plane was shot down by the Japanese, and he was captured and taken as a prisoner of war, where he suffered brutal treatment. (After returning to the States after the war, Harry became a successful businessman; he passed at the age of 56.)

For those whose relatives fought during World War II, visiting these historic battle sites can be an emotional experience. This summer, Bentley will be joining a small group to Normandy to tour the Landing Beaches and visit the remembrance museums and memorials. His vast knowledge of the entire World War II campaign will greatly lend reflections to the entire experience.

On Day Three, you will take an excursion to the Landing Beaches with a drive to Utah Beach to see the memorials and visit the museum. Then, in Sainte-Mere-Eglise, you will visit the Airborne Museum, located next to the church where John Steele’s parachute got caught in one of the steeples, as portrayed in the movie The Longest Day. (A side note: when my father was in the Army, he was assigned to be an Airborne Paratrooper against his wishes.

He told me he never liked to jump and could see “absolutely no good reason for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.” But he did!)

On Day Four, you will visit the Canadian Cemetery, and then it’s on to Juno Beach Center to visit the exhibitions, the bunker and the Memorial to Canadians. In the nearby Bernieressur-Mer, you can take remembrance photos of the Canada House. After what I am sure will be an emotional tour, you will return to Paris, where you can extend your trip for a few days.

“Look for homes,” he says, “that have been inspected and tested by an independent Home Energy Rater. These professionals advise builders how to select the most appropriate energy-efficient features for a home; raters inspect and test the home during and after construction to verify that the home meets strict guidelines for energy efficiency.”

Having the “right size” HVAC also is important in realizing energy savings. “When it comes to tightly constructed, energy-efficient homes, bigger is not better,” according to Ali. “Oversized equipment operates less efficiently and can cause humidity problems in addition to costing you more to purchase,” he explains. “When systems are oversized, moisture problems can lead to high humidity and create indoor air quality problems, affecting occupants’ comfort and health.”

Since then, he’s hit the ground running, separating the political wheat from the chaff and setting a clear vision for his cabinet members. Tulsa Lifestyle magazine caught up with him at the Capitol a few weeks into his office to discuss his plans to make Oklahoma a Top 10 state.

TL: YOUR FIRST EXECUTIVE ORDERS ARE ABOUT COST SAVINGS, TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY. IS THIS A THEME? GOV. STITT: Absolutely. Oklahomans elected me to be the chief executive officer of the Executive Branch.

I am in charge of running 400 agencies. First, I hired a chief operating officer, John Budd, from the business sector. The state has never had a COO before. His business development experience will help our agencies deliver efficient, customer-focused services. He will also serve as secretary of agency accountability.

Next, I went through all the agencies to make sure they were structured correctly. I was amazed to learn that some insiders had never heard of some of these commissions. Did you know we have a Santa Claus Commission and a Boll Weevil Eradication Commission?

Also, Health and Human Services was under one secretary. That’s a hundred different agencies managing $8 billion. I broke it up because I wanted to focus on health/ mental health and human services/child services in two separate areas. Then I combined some smaller areas like the veterans administration and military, which had been separate, but made more sense to be together.

One of my first executive orders was to sell the state’s private airplane. I am a pilot and a huge aviation supporter but selling it will save the state money, and since I made that decision, I’ve found two more King Airs we didn’t know we had.

TL: HAVE YOU ADDED ANY NEW POSITIONS? GOV. STITT: Yes, in addition to the chief operating officer and secretary of agency accountability, I added a secretary of budget and secretary of digital transformation. The latter was essential because everyone has a cell phone now and are used to getting services that way. It’s time for Oklahoma to have a customer-focused government and start delivering services to our citizens a little bit differently.

I want everyone to know that we have a fantastic state and we have all the resources to be Top 10. I am challenging all my agency secretaries to think big and look at states that are doing better than us. It may not happen in four years, or even eight, but this is the direction we are going.

A GROUP OF MOORE PUBLIC SCHOOLS PATRONS IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE CONDITION OF EDUCATION IN OKLAHOMA, ESPECIALLY DURING THE PAST FEW YEARS’ FINANCIAL TURMOIL. They take a great deal of pride in their school system, praising the outstanding job the school board and administration have done in shepherding the schools through these difficult times. But the challenges are daunting, and this group wants to be part of the solution.

About nine months ago, they organized under the leadership of Dr. George Elassal to create the Community Fund for Moore Schools, with the goal of supplying grants to update the physical infrastructure of schools in the Moore Public Schools system.

In addition to Elassal, the current board members of the Fund are David Postic, vice president; Steve Buchanan, treasurer; and Karrie Freeman, Marcie Falcone and Sen. Darrell Weaver.

While the members feel there are many ways to help schools, they chose a route of practical, concrete action, because they believed brickand-mortar improvements could lead to a wide range of positive outcomes and would benefit all students impartially.

“In addition to improving the educational experience for students,” a statement on their website explains, “these grants can help schools conserve ever-scarce financial resources.”

Their first project is designed to meet both those goals while conserving energy–the updating of lighting in the school buildings from fluorescent to LED. The idea for this project came from Dr. Elassal, who converted his office lighting to LED about two years ago and subsequently saw “big savings” on his electric bill. With the help of Todd Stapleton, energy and conservation manager for the school district, an estimate was performed on a representative elementary school to gauge the possible impact.

They concluded that it would cost about $19,300 to retrofit the lights in in the school, but the project when complete should save about $8,000 per year. It was also estimated that the LED bulbs would last from 10 to 15 years–a savings of nearly $100,000 over the lifetimes of the bulbs.

These numbers were impressive enough to get the support of the board members and encourage them to begin detailed planning, starting with the 25 elementary schools in the system.

“We were thinking about tackling the older schools first,” Elassal said, “but we will talk to the school administration and take our guidance from them.”

When the lighting project is complete, the group plans to continue working with the district administration to fulfill other infrastructure needs, such as updating school electronics.

The members of the Fund, all enthusiastic supporters of Moore schools, are excited about the project. Each of them has had–or still have–children in the system, or have worked for or attended Moore schools.

Freeman, who has had five children in Moore schools, was a teacher and school counselor at all grade levels from 1982 until her retirement in 2017.

She said she got involved in the Fund “because George is very persuasive.”

That was a sentiment repeated by all the board members.

Falcone, an active PTA member and volunteer in the school system, has two sets of twins attending Moore schools.

As a result, he also acquired a valuable and broad knowledge of the foods, dishes, drinks and spices for which each region was known. Last year, he was able to draw heavily on that knowledge—and those contacts—when he and his partners launched their new venture here: Press & Plow Fine Wine, Spirits and Provisions.

Though a single business, Press & Plow, located at 2596 W. Tecumseh Road, is actually separated into two spaces, albeit next door, because of state laws that prevent a retail wine and spirits shop from being connected to a coffee bar that serves alcohol for consumption. Both sides share a homey, clean, modern-kitchen design vibe and an atmosphere that’s warm and welcoming.

The “Provisions” side of the business, which opened last December, offers more than 20 different single-origin, blends and organic coffees as well as over 60 different teas from around the world sourcing the finest hand-picked organic teas and coffees.

Bagged coffees also are sold here, and to help patrons interested in sampling new coffees, Press & Plow includes labels that tastefully describe their flavor, where they were sourced and at what attitude, and how to prepare them.

Anthony says his favorite is their espresso blend. “It has the perfect balance of everything you would want in an espresso and is the perfect start for all specialty coffee drinks. It’s a master roasters’ blend of three beans that each impart a particular flavor to produce an ultra-smooth bold espresso that has the perfect balance.”

Espressos are made on a La Marzacco espresso maker imported from Italy.

“While patrons can select coffees sourced anywhere from Egypt to El Salvador, we at Press & Plow also love to feature all the local roasters in our pour-over program that features a local roaster. This has allowed us to showcase what other local roasters are proud of. It’s all about sharing a great cup of coffee with our guests.”

You’ll have to look far and wide for another place to find the range of coffees available at Press & Plow. “We are up there with the best,” says Anthony, adding, “Our guests have said this is the best coffee they have ever had, we have even had local roasters tell us that its some of the best espresso they have ever had. This means a lot to us, as they have

Ever tried a Nitro Latte? To the best of his knowledge, Press & Plow is the first in Oklahoma to serve this drink, which is made with smallbatch cold brews.

Press & Plow additionally offers grab-and-go specials, including salads, sandwiches, muffins and pastries (including some gluten-free) made daily on-site, and a selection of nonalcoholic drinks, including sparkling waters and a kombucha (Big Oak) that’s made in Oklahoma City.

Anthony is particularly passionate about their wide selection of meats and both domestic and imported cheeses, which can be bought individually or artfully arranged on a meat and cheese board. They also offer small Tapas-style appetizers that he describes as “amazing and cleverly thought-out parings of meats cheeses, olives and housemade jams, and pickles, pastries, etc.” Of course, what’s cheese without crackers? Press & Plow offers dozens of styles of crackers, including artisan small batch and gluten-free.

For example, they can quickly put together cheese boards for any size of party and any budget, and will recommend appropriate wine pairings, which can then be bought next door.

Now on to the “Fine Wine and Spirits” side of the business. The first thing you see upon entering the wine and spirits shop is a vintage wine press that the owners purchased in Napa Valley.

One of the focal points of the shop is a large, temperature-controlled wine room where they store some of their higher-end selections. They also have a huge selection of whiskeys and bourbons, as well as other kinds of liquors; a beer cooler with a wide selection of domestic and imported beers, including a large selection of craft beers; a special barrel of Blanton’s Single-Barrel Bourbon bottled just for them; and a collection of rare wines that you won’t find in your average liquor store.

They also offer many “extras,” such as Vault ice for bourbons and scotches and a wide selection of mixers, including some of the newest mixology offerings.
