HAPPY NEW YEAR! During this time of reflection and hopes for the new year, I recently found myself pondering happenstance, specifically regarding my experiences as a freelance writer and editor. A little over three years ago, as I was heading to OKC to interview for a position as editor of a trade magazine, a friend called to tell me someone was

The latter magazine was, of course, Cleveland County Lifestyle, and the interviewer publisher Jimmy Darden. All this seems like only yesterday; however, the February issue will mark the start of our fourth year of publication! It's been a wild ride: sometimes smooth, sometimes bumpy, often illuminating, but never boring.

We're starting the new year out with a bang. A few of our stories (no surprise) deal with making and keeping resolutions or, as local life coach Diana Morgan calls them, "goals" or "promises." Read Diana's tips on how to stay on track to meet those

NORMAN CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL SET FOR JAN. 26 The Norman Chocolate Festival, an annual fundraising event with a rich history of bringing the community together to support education, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Norman North High School, 1809 Stubbeman Ave. Partnering restaurants and businesses will offer samples of delectable treats. Proceeds will support education in Norman Public Schools through grants for school PTA projects. Plus, votes during the event will identify Norman's favorite chocolate from the dozens of participating restaurants and businesses who support this event.

Tickets are available in four, one-hour-long sessions. Premiere ticket holders at the 10 a.m. session will receive 15 tastes. The 11 a.m. and noon sessions will allow ticket holders to receive 10 tastes.

New this year will be a Happy Hour during the 1 p.m. session. This ticket comes with a sweet price for 10 tastes, plus a free "mini-ticket" for kids 12 and under per each regular ticket holder. Mini-tickets are good for three tastes.

“I REMEMBER BACK WHEN I WAS ON THE PTA WHEN MY CHILDREN WERE IN SCHOOL IN NORMAN,” LISA RECOLLECTS. “Back then, our focus was on getting air conditioning in the gym. I remember working so hard to raise money and feeling like it was such a big project.”

This feeling was familiar to the Smiths as they began looking for a way to make a difference for educators in the greater Cleveland County area over the past year. “We kept hearing over and over about how our teachers needed our help and we were wondering what we could do,” she reflects. “Sometimes it just feels like it is too big. But we have all been impacted at some point in our lives by an important teacher, so we knew it was worth it.”

In March 2017, the Smiths offered $100 gift cards for their store to teachers and support staff in Moore Public Schools in honor of teacher appreciation week. “The feedback was wonderful,” Lantz said. “We would see some of them come in teary-eyed for being able to pick out something nice. I think it helped them to know that someone was on their side.”

From there, the Smiths expanded the program to include local fire departments, police departments and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. “We wanted to make sure

New Year's Resolutions LIFE COACH OFFERS TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP THEM

GOALS. How do we set them, and how do we keep them?

This is a huge topic that can get deep in a hurry if we take into account what might be blocking us from achieving our goals.

Is there some aspect of your life that, if you could get it right and under control, the rest of your life would fall into place? If so, you may want to focus on it and create not only a goal, but a promise to yourself. (With goals we tend to hit or miss but there’s much more power behind a promise.)

For me, that one aspect is my eating. When my eating is under control and I’m not overeating sugar and flour, I maintain a healthy weight, I exercise, I make progress in my career, my relationships are healthier, and I even regularly practice the piano!

Once you identify this central aspect, find the best possible resources that work for you. We all need help and support to reach our goals. A resource that I have found useful is called Bright Line Eating (brightlineeating.com). You, however, are not me, so it’s important to find what works best for you. Once you find it, commit to it wholeheartedly! Promise yourself!

Another powerful tip is to make whatever you’re wanting to achieve your new identity. For example, if you want to write a book and get it published, that’s your goal. If you take on the identity of a writer, you will write daily, you will write even when you don’t feel like it or when stress hits, because that’s who you are.

Speaking of every day, the best way I know to achieve my goals is to make working on them a daily habit. A recently published book on this topic is called Atomic Habits by James Clear. His brilliance is in teaching that if we can just get better by 1 percent daily, these tiny changes will translate into remarkable results.

Finally, negative experiences in our pasts may block us from making progress on our goals. For example, if we were laughed at when speaking in front of the classroom as a child, our minds may have decided to not speak in front of groups because it isn’t safe. Now, as we want to grow our businesses or advance in our careers and we need to do some public speaking, our fear stops us or makes it very uncomfortable. I specialize in a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as Tapping, that clears these blockages out of the way. Often, we just feel stuck. EFT can help greatly with this.

A CHAMPION ON AND OFF THE COURT UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA HEAD BASKETBALL COACH LON KRUGER IS ENTERING HIS 33RD SEASON AS A COLLEGIATE HEAD COACH AND HIS EIGHTH CAMPAIGN AS HEAD COACH AT OKLAHOMA. After inheriting a program that went 27-36 in the two seasons prior to his arrival, he has coached the Sooners to a 140-91 record and has reached the NCAA Tournament in five of the past six seasons.

Lon boasts the 10th-most career wins among active coaches and is the 33rd head coach to win 600 Division I games in the history of college basketball. He owns a 20-18 record in NCAA Tournament games and has compiled an amazing 16 20-plus-win seasons, including nine in his last 13 years.

In 2017, he was honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches Metropolitan Award for long and outstanding service to men’s college basketball. Before the start of the 2018-19 campaign, the John R. Wooden Award selected him as the 2019 recipient of its Legends of Coaching Award.

Honorees are selected based on character, success on the court, graduation rate of student-athletes in their basketball program, coaching philosophy and identification with the goals of the John R. Wooden Award.

“Having been active as an athlete in my earlier days has definitely carried over,” he says. “There is some history of heart disease in my family, and so I knew early on it was important to be aware of what I eat, combined with activities.”

iceland A YEAR-ROUND OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST’S PARADISE

WAS ONE OF YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TO TRAVEL MORE? If getting yourself more fit also was on your list, you might want to check out Iceland. This small country is a year-round outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, with an abundance of mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, rivers, lakes and caves, all waiting to be explored and photographed.

(Tip: It’s also a warm and welcoming place for those less athletically inclined.)

Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic, with a population of 348,580 and an area of 103,00 kilometers, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe.

The capital, Reykjavik, is its largest city. The interior consists of sand and lava fields and mountains, and many glacier rivers flow to the sea through the low lands. Volcanically and geologically active, Iceland offers numerous opportunities for exploring and hiking, as well as relaxing in one of its thermal pools.

Two area residents, Zac and Meagan Rose, found plenty to do and see during their recent trek to Iceland; they were especially enamored of its many waterfalls (of which there are an astonishing number: approximately 10,000!).

After their Iceland visit, the couple told their travel agent, Bonnie Hedges of Bentley Hedges Travel in Oklahoma City, that one of their favorite places to visit was Vatnajökull National Park, where a milelong hike led 1

them to a beautiful waterfall.

To see as much as possible of this beautiful country, Meagan and Zac rented a car, pulling off the road when they came across a waterfall or other sight they wanted to explore on foot.

Meagan says that Skógafoss was Zac's favorite waterfall. “Not far off of the highway, you park in a gravel parking lot and can literally walk as close to the waterfall as you want,” he said. “The scenery here was beautiful.

"The colors were absolutely amazing, and you could see down as far as your eyesight lets you. The water is below freezing, so they put us in in dry suits.

You were cold while snorkeling, but your body is completely dry when you take off your suit. Such an awesome experience!”

Their travels also took them to a black beach at Sólheimasandur where, in 1973, a U.S. Navy DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed. “Thankfully, everyone survived the crash!” Meagan notes. “This has become a popular sight, but the walk to get out to it is pretty far. I want to say it was about 2 miles each way. So, you need to allow yourself a little bit of time if this is something you want to do.”

As Meagan and Zac continued exploring Iceland, they came upon an iceberg-studded lagoon (Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon),

located in the southeast part of the country. “The seals will come close to the shoreline for you to get a good look at them,” Meagan notes, also pointing out that boat tours are offered that will get you up close and personal with the icebergs. “If you go a little further down,” she adds, “there’s a place they call ‘Diamond Beach, which is full of large chunks of ice that have washed up onshore.”

MUIRFIELD HOMES’ NEW DIGS FORMER STEEL COMPANY OFFICE GETS FACELIFT TO MEET NEEDS OF CUSTOM HOMEBUILDER

From its sharp angles and floor-to-ceiling glass walls, Alan Cheshier is proud of Muirfield Homes’ new digs in Norman.

The location at Lindsey Street and 24th Avenue SW near Interstate 35 in Norman offer high visibility that Alan loves. In fact, there’s a lot to love about Muirfield Homes by Alan Cheshier’s new offices, which formerly housed an engineering company. Size, for one thing. Their former work space was about 375 square feet, compared to about 2,700 square feet. Muirfield Homes’ new splitlevel, two-story site includes offices and plenty of spaces to meet with clients, interior designers and others.

Alan’s office includes a spacious area in which to meet with staff and clients. The sleek, black modern couch and chairs reflect a retro ’60s look (appropriate, since that is when the building was built), and includes the original wet bar; together, Alan says, the space has a “Mad Men” vibe.

Because they wanted their new offices to reflect the same style and taste they offer clients in designing their homes, the space was overhauled: among other changes, hanging ceilings and old florescent lighting were removed, providing a significant increase in the ceiling height. Modern recessed lighting, along with the natural light admitted through numerous windows, gives the place a light, breezy feel.

They didn’t toss out all the old, however. They kept the built-in drafting tables, which are equally useful in their business, though they covered them in new materials to make them look more at home in the new setting.

But the thing Alan is perhaps most excited about is the second-floor “idea center,” featuring a long conference table and big-screen TV where they can show clients floor plans and other details. The room also houses physical samples, like quartz and granite counter tops and bathroom and kitchen fixtures.

“Many people just aren’t able to visualize what a room will look from blueprints or photos; by having these products available for clients to see and touch, they can get a better feel about what is being proposed and be more comfortable making their choices,” Alan explains, noting that the businesses’ bathrooms also were built to showcase some of the options they offer homebuyers.

“Ninety-eight percent of homebuyers start on the internet,” Alan notes. “Our goal is to bring the building process to the millennium and make it enjoyable for our customers.”

Still on the drawing table are enhancements to the grounds, including water features. He hopes to have these in before their open house, planned for late January.

These are busy times for this custom home business. They also are in the process of building a new showcase home at 3612 Vintage Creek Drive in Norman’s Vintage Creek addition at Tecumseh and Highway 77. Because they custom build homes ranging from $300,000 to over $1 million, the approximately 3,300-foot house—a modern farmhouse—is being designed to interest a diverse clientele.

For our “parting thought” this issue, may we suggest you don your warmest and most comfy robe and slippers, build a fire (or light up your gas logs) and make yourself a hot buttered rum cocktail that’s sure to please the taste buds and warm your insides, too? Our recipe calls for SelvaRey Cacao Rum—ask for it at your local liquor store.

SELVAREY HOT BUTTERED RUM COCKTAIL SPICED BUTTER:

+ 8 oz Kerrygold salted butter + 1/2 cup Blue Bell vanilla ice cream + 1 cup brown sugar + 1 tbsp freshly grated nutmeg + 1 tbsp ground cinnamon + 1 tbsp ground clove + 1 tbsp ground all spice + 1 tsp cayenne pepper Allow ice cream to soften and butter to come to room temperature. Add all ingredients to electric mixing bowl and mix until butter is lightly whipped. Lay out a piece of cling wrap and place butter in the center. Wrap the butter and slowly roll to get an even tube (like a giant Tootsie Roll). Put in the fridge to harden.

HOT BUTTER RUM:

+ 2 oz SelvaRey Cacao Rum + 2 oz hot water Add some near-boiling water to your glass to warm (I like to use a tea kettle). Once your glass is warm, dump the water. Take your hardened butter, slice off approximately 2 oz (about 1 large tablespoon), and add to your glass. Top with about 2 oz hot water and stir vigorously. Add 2 oz of SelvaRey Cacao Rum to the glass. Top with another approximately 2 oz hot water and give a final stir. You should have a nice layer of delicious foam that forms on top of the drink. Add a light zest of nutmeg to garnish. Enjoy!
