Washing the Dust Off Our Souls

T

he great Spanish artist Pablo Picasso is credited with stating, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”

We in Cleveland County are extraordinarily fortunate to have close at hand a wealth of artists—painters and sculptors, vocalists and instrumentalists, writers and poets, and so many more—who are helping us keep our souls shiny and bright, no matter our personal daily trials and tribulations.

In this, our Local Artists/Musicians issue, you’ll find two feature stories that introduce six local “creatives.”

One features three, very stylistically different visual artists—JUURI, Skip Hill and Brett McDanel—who in addition to their amazing talent share a “tenacious stubbornness,” a trait the author says is necessary to move an artist from “starving” to “thriving.” Some of the work is playful, some dead serious, but I’m betting you’ll be amazed at the artistry displayed by all three.

The other story showcases three musicians who have gained notoriety (the good kind) both locally and further afield. Heartbreak Rodeo, a popular acoustic band composed of David Hanson, Michael Bendure and Chris Walsh, is “all about fun”—fun for them and for everyone who watches them, says Hanson. Derek Paul performs solo acoustic gigs, as well as with his current rock band the Patron Aints. The Patron Aints perform Monday evenings at The Deli in Norman, and Paul also hosts a songwriters’ and storytellers’ event at Norman’s Hollywood Corners Tuesday evenings. The third featured musician is Kierston White, who performs solo as well as with a group of other local female country singers known collectively as the Tequila Songbirds. She can be seen performing at The Deli as well as at The Blue Door in Oklahoma City.

Our Road Trip column this month takes us on a journey to this vacation favorite, which offers repeat visitors something old, something new.

We think you'll also enjoy this month's Giving Back column, which shines the spotlight on an organization that, through various community programs, reaches out to young athletes with disabilities, raises money to restore Oklahoma City schools’ athletic fields, provides the soccer community with coaching and support, and participates in many other community undertakings.

These and other stories in this issue highlight just some of the people who make our community great, from our talented artists and musicians to our generous and caring business owners and residents who regularly go out of their way to help friends and neighbors in need—together, they help all of us “wash the dust of daily life off our souls.”

wo of the latest treatments for chronic pain and getting rid of stubborn fat are proving to be big hits for clients at AlignOK Chiropractic Wellness, and patients are reaping

“I use it to treat conditions like plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow and a wide range of sports injuries,” said Brotherton, whose general chiropractic practice involves quite a bit of foot care. “I have over a 95 percent success rate with plantar fasciitis in particular," he said. "We have been doing this since September of last year, and it is really amazing. The effects are felt after the first one to two treatments, and by the end, most people experience at least a 50 percent improvement. I’ve even had one patient who had suffered for 20 years and tried all sorts of things, and after six treatments with the pressure wave therapy is pain-free.”

he drive from Springfield to Branson, Missouri, is pretty and peaceful, with rolling green hills, redbud trees, and miles of

limestone walls resembling castles without windows.

Residents say it's one of the rockiest places in the country, and they joke that "it takes a stick of dynamite to plant a tree."

This beautiful part of Missouri didn't attract farming, but lakes, golf courses, music and clean family entertainment are a constant draw.

Millions of tourists visit Branson every year, and some hope things will stay the same, while others welcome change. They will see a bit of both as the Branson scene evolves with venues that appeal to a younger generation.

Paul currently is working on a solo album, which he hopes to release next year.

KIERSTON WHITE Music is a family affair for Shawnee native Kierston White, whose brother Bryon White is a popular local folk musician.

“About 10 years ago, my brother passed me one of his first guitars, a pretty yellow acoustic Fender,” she explains. “He taught me how to hold it, strum to a metronome, and change my strings. I practiced for hours every day because I wanted so badly to play with other musicians and understand that language. He has influenced my songwriting and playing more than anyone.”

White had been writing poetry for several years and realized that she wanted people to hear her words.

“I thought I had some pretty good lines,” she says. “I knew I had something one day when I played Bryon a song. I was nervous about others hearing it, but he said that it was a good song that people have to hear.” This encouragement, along with the performers that she watched perform each year at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah, helped define and shape her growth as a musician.

White currently performs solo, as well as with a group of other local female country singers known collectively as the Tequila Songbirds.

She released her first album, “Don’t Write Love Songs,” composed solely of her original music, in 2014.

“I am still here because I love my friends. I can't even describe to you how rich they make me feel. Making music with my friends is possibly the greatest joy of my life.

“Since I live in Norman, I play as often as I can at The Deli. In Oklahoma City, I enjoy playing at The Blue Door,” she adds. “I am currently in nursing school, so you will definitely catch me playing more in the summer and on school breaks.”

THRIVING LOCAL MUSIC One thing that these local musicians agree on is that the music scene in Oklahoma is thriving. “The local music scene is growing, that is one thing I am sure of,” White concludes. “It seems like every time I turn around there is a new mini-festival or venue.”

Paul encourages people of all ages to get out and see a live local show and experience many of Oklahoma’s talented musicians. “We have so much talent in Oklahoma, so much that people in other areas are trying to imitate what we do naturally. Oklahoma music really is its own native brand. It must be something in the water,” he says, laughing.

Brett McDanel's work evokes emotion ranging from grief to joy.

What do puns, child-like shenanigans, depth of emotion, back surgery and cold metal figures have in common? Brett McDanel! The former contractor-turned-sensitive-artist welds found objects and scrap-metal pieces into personalized, surprisingly lifelike figures. Skillfully, he takes personal childhood stories and channels them into a hard, lifeless hunk of metal.

Like Geppetto, McDanel works daily in his local studio, lovingly assembling figures and bringing life to dead objects. The magic is in how easily transferrable these emotions and stories become to others.

"People see their own story, and their own emotion before they see the parts. It's not about how well it's put together because I'm not the world's greatest welder. But people emotionally engage with the piece, and sometimes it [the interpretation] is completely different than what I had in my mind."

Recovering from back surgery a couple years ago, he was encouraged by his wife, Sara, to "go for it" and produce his art full time. Knowing a change of careers was necessary, he harnessed that secret weapon of stubbornness and did the hard work. His first piece after the surgery, titled "Broken," tells the story of his recovery. Skip Hill has become a local, household name. His tenacity has earned him an international audience and, despite commonly held beliefs about artists, his connections in the art world did not fall into his lap. Now, on Sundays, he has the "whole day to make art. It's my worship right now."

The wave comes back and you want to be with people. When I spend too much time alone in the studio or just living life, it can get depressive." Through organic mentoring, Hill continually shares his experiences with other creatives.

WHO YOUR BENEFICIARIES ARE?

W

hen was the last time you checked your beneficiary designations for your individual retirement account

(IRA), employer retirement plan, annuity or life insurance policy? If you haven’t examined it since the account was set up, you are not alone.

Due to changing circumstances and shifting priorities, you may find that your named beneficiaries are no longer in keeping with your estate plan or wishes. If you have switched jobs, become a new parent, divorced or survived a spouse or a child, your current beneficiary designations may need to be updated.

STEPS TO STAY CURRENT To ensure that your beneficiary designations are current and up-to-date, consider the following steps:

Make a list of all accounts that have named beneficiaries. This may include 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, 457 plans, IRAs, pension plans, life

insurance policies, annuities and bank accounts.

Contact the plan administrator or financial institution that maintains or services your account to verify your current beneficiary

designations. You may want to do this with the help of your tax advisor or

s a child and through my teens, I loved to draw. I immersed myself first in drawing horses, later moving to people and
