hat’s your idea of adventure? Are water sports your thing?

Perhaps you like to sail or water ski or scuba dive? Or perhaps you share with many other Oklahomans a deep love for fishing, always hoping to catch that elusive big fish? Or maybe your tastes run more toward hiking or camping?

For one area father and son, adventure takes a more extreme, and much higher, path—to 10,000 to 14,000 feet and more above the earth! Though the two men admit skydiving’s a hobby that probably isn’t for everyone, they believe it’s something most people should try at least once in their lives. They say they’re not in it for the adrenaline rush (well, only partly), but for the sense of freedom and joy it provides them. Personally, I prefer to keep my adventure-seeking much closer to ground. I don’t even like roller coasters!

My personal favorite form of adventure is the road trip. Because these are usually only short jaunts of a day or two, they’re easy to fit into even the busiest schedules, and they allow valuable bonding time with your traveling partner/s, where it’s a spouse, family or friends. In this issue, you’ll hear about one of our new contributing writer’s visit to Pawhuska to visit the Pioneer Woman Mercantile: bakery, deli restaurant and general store. Since its opening on Oct. 31, 2016, some 900,000 people from 50 states and 20 countries have found their way to that tiny town to enjoy Ree Drummond's delicious food and down-home atmosphere, and maybe even get a chance to meet the famous Food Network show host and blogger.

Funds from a silent quilt auction will fund a scholarship that is open to all Cleveland County high school students.

Celebrating 100 years along with its umbrella organization this year is Clothier #15, which for many years helped maintain one of Oklahoma’s two remaining one-room school houses. About seven years ago, the school house was purchased by a private individual, who restored and refurbished it and relocated it to a site at the intersection of Sooner Road and SE 149th St. Clothier #15 continues to meet at the school house, and is planning a centennial celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. July 15. The public is invited to attend.

‘FLOAT THERAPY’: A NEW WAY TO RELAX, HEAL MIND AND BODY ExpressCRYO is now offering float therapy to help their clients heal their body and mind. The business owners describe float therapy as “a luxurious escape from the constant stress of life’s daily pressures and a natural way to heal the body and mind.”

Martha Griffith, Longfellow Middle School music teacher, waited over four hours in line on a cold day during spring break, and said she'd do it again.

"It's a fun ladies’ day out," Melinda Capriotti said. The food is the quality you would expect from Ree, and the prices are reasonable." She has all of Ree's cookbooks and uses many of the recipes.

Lisa Standridge, Norman, said bubbles and sidewalk chalk kept her three children entertained while she waited in line with her mother, Nancy Jones. "We came to celebrate my mom's birthday," Standridge said. We had a great time with wonderful food and shopping."

And sometimes there are surprises. Jones had her photo taken with Ree's husband, Ladd, The Marlboro Man (who doesn't smoke).

There really is something special about "the merc" experience that makes people smile and make plans to come back.

The Osage County town of 3,500 people is gearing up for summer, said Joni Nash, executive director, Pawhuska Chamber of Commerce.

"Everyone in town benefits from The Pioneer Woman's Mercantile, and I think it's the biggest thing for Oklahoma since Thunder basketball," Nash said with a laugh. "Our focus now is getting a hotel here in town."

As your heart begins beating again, you pull your pilot chute and feel a jolt. You’re back in control, but you’re not done yet!

Now you've got to steer the big chute back to the ground safely.

The cool thing is you’re just riding up about 3,000 feet and getting some of the best views of the earth.”

The above quote is by 41-year-old Norman resident Loren Coburn, describing his thoughts as he exits a plane from a height of 10,000 to 14,000 feet above the ground.

Coburn got started in the extreme sport of skydiving four years ago when his son, also named Loren, at age 15 shared his

“I can remember the times growing up when I was told ‘no,’ that I couldn't do something because it was too dangerous … and that sucked. But I'm just not that style of parent,” Coburn says. “If my children want to accomplish something, they know they just need to ask. But when they do, it’s theirs’ to own. The funny thing is, when Loren said that to me, I knew from his expression that there wasn't any quit in him, that he wouldn't back out when the time came. And that he would have the opportunity to overcome something at such a young age that not many could even fathom.

“Our first jump was on July 27, 2013, at the Oklahoma Skydiving Center in Cushing,” Coburn recalls. “Loren did the research, and we picked a day and went. It was one of the most exciting–and scariest–days of our lives.” (Coburn’s wife, Evi, a U.S. Army veteran, accompanied them on that first visit, but she didn’t stay with it.)

After that first experience, father and son were hooked.

“It's not as easy as the videos make it seem,” Coburn relates. “It's one of the most extreme sports in the world! It also requires you to control yourself under the most extreme amount of pressure. The sport requires fast reaction times and the ability to handle pressure with poise.”

Both are now experienced skydivers, as well as members of the U.S. Parachute Association. The older Coburn now has 176 successful jumps behind him. On the 177th, he was less fortunate, breaking a fibula upon landing and sidelining him from jumping for five weeks.

Son Loren has enjoyed 200 successful jumps, has earned a coach rating, and is now teaching others to skydive at Oklahoma Skydiving Center.

Coburn’s reasons for continuing to jump are many and complex, and go far beyond just the adrenaline rush it affords.

“It’s hard to explain,” he says. “Skydiving is like an alternative lifestyle. It’s quiet.

It’s about you and the sky. I don’t need to be perfect or to compete. You’re not thinking about the business and the reality of life. You’re just flying free for the 60 or so seconds that you’re falling, and nothing else matters at that moment.

Laughing, he adds, “It’s beyond cool to say that I’m a skydiver; it’s always a great way to get people to talk to you.”

Coburn, a broker and owner of RE/MAX Elite in Norman, believes skydiving has benefitted him in both his career and life.

“Once you’ve faced fear head on, you’ve won. Is there really anything you can’t do? Not for me. I will talk to anyone, speak up when needed and handle pressure with a poise that I never had when I was younger. I have always been afraid to speak in front of people. I would never have thought that I could lead an organization, as I’m currently doing now as the president of the MLSOK in Oklahoma City.

“Skydiving has helped me know that I can do anything and overcome anything life throws at me. I’m a better leader because of some of the people in my life and skydiving.”

“There are probably hundreds of reasons I can give you for why I skydive, but the short answer is there’s nothing that compares to that feeling of freedom you get when you jump out of a plane,” Coburn’s son adds. “Words can’t really describe it, but that feeling and view never gets old, and every jump is different and unique.”

The 19-year-old calls the initial jump his favorite part of the entire experience.

“It’s so real and amazing just to think that I am getting to jump out of a plane, and it’s even better when your friends are there jumping with you and you get to see the smiles on their faces. It’s always scary while riding up in the plane, thinking of what you're about to do, but as soon as you let go of the airplane, somehow all that fear instantly turns into joy and the ultimate feeling of freedom.”

On a more reflective note, the junior Coburn, who hopes to make skydiving a vocation as well as avocation, adds that skydiving has helped him put his life into perspective, to understand “how tiny humans are and how big and amazing our world really is,” and how to live in the moment.

Both men have set goals of performing HALO jumping, a military-style, high-altitude, parachute jump, and BASE jumping, which involves parachuting or wingsuit flying from a fixed structure or cliff. They also hope to go skydiving in Dubai and across the world. Coburn’s son, who also enjoys skydiving with his girlfriend, Rachel, says one of his biggest dreams is to skydive under the Northern Lights.

mong the most challenging issues facing society today are those that involve sexual abuse, especially in children.

Unfortunately, because the topic is considered taboo, cases all too

often go unreported. And even when a victim or other witness does come forward seeking intervention and help, most communities are ill-prepared to address the situation.

Cleveland County is privileged to have an organization that tackles this life-shattering abuse head-on. Bethesda Inc. works with the young victims of sexual abuse and their non-offending family members, helping the children, and the family as a whole, heal and prosper.

SOME 'MAGICAL' AND 'RADICAL' PICKS ARTICLE BRYAN KERR

T

his time of year makes me think of one of my all-time favorite musical groups, The Cars, and a giant hit from them, “Magic”. Sing it

with me now: “Summer, it turns me upside down. Summer, summer, summer … it’s like a merry-go-round.”

Ah, the ‘80s … what a totally radical decade. In this article, I hope to give you some “magical” and “radical” wine picks for enjoying while the weather is hot. But I also bring up my questionable musical tastes for another reason: Wine, like music, is a personal thing. As I’ve said many times before, I am not an expert at tasting or picking wine for other people. And also, I’m every bit the expert at tasting and picking wine for other people as most anyone else.

My point being, I’m happy to recommend some wines that I like to drink. I hope you appreciate the effort, and maybe try one or more and find that you like them, too. But I don’t understand how anyone could say Ric Ocasek and the boys weren’t one of the best bands of all time, even though some of my closest friends never shared my love for the new wave quartet who provided the soundtrack for my entire junior year at Moore High School. But, then again, those same friends swore by Bartles & James and Boone’s Farm, so what do they know?

Some folks have asked me how I pick the wines I recommend. Do I get free product or payment for promoting one wine over another?

Have I drank every wine in my store to determine the best ones?

Am I a wino who has found a way to profit from my bad habit? The answers are no, almost, and only God can judge me. Truth is, I do get to taste a lot of wine for free, compliments of the men and women who would like me to carry their products at Moore Liquor. I also personally enjoy trying new wines as well as drinking some old favorites.

So I try and find wines that I think are interesting, appropriate for the season and perhaps something you normally would not think to buy because you’ve not seen a creepy animatronic kangaroo in a multi-million-dollar ad campaign about it or it doesn’t appear on the wine list at the Cheesecake Factory or show up in the one aisle dedicated to the mass-marketed swill they sell at the Gainesville Walmart.

Most importantly, I look for wines that are worth what you pay for them. Between you and me, there are fantastic wines for less than $30 all over the place these days, even some great ones below $20. You just gotta know where to look. And, since you’re already looking here, allow me to suggest these three excellent white wines for summertime enjoyment:

The reason I love it for this time of year is because it’s clean, crisp and pairs exceptionally well with grilled foods. Many experienced wine drinkers would say this grape is preferable from New Zealand or France, but California has gotten much better at it recently and this is a superb example of how far they’ve come.

CHAMPALOU VOUVRAY $22.12 for 750ml bottle 12.5% ABV Vouvray is a very versatile white wine. It’s food-friendly and also drinks fine all by itself. Vouvray is a region in France known for the Chenin Blanc grape. I like this wine for summer because it embodies classic Vouvray flavors like white peach and apple with some interesting minerality. Although technically a dry wine, it finishes with a

It can also be more difficult to keep the other players accountable if they can siphon funds or profits without you noticing. If you’re a beginning investor, keep it simple at first. Always learn and expand your knowledge so you can continually invest in more sophisticated projects.

#5 Be rational, logical and unemotional.

Emotions are not your friend in the investing world. Never fall in love with an investment. Know when to say “no” and also when to pull the plug. Stay calm and go by real data, not your feelings. I will admit that there’s a lot to be said for trusting your gut instinct, but when managing your investment, never act (or react) out of anger, spite, etc. Beware of trends, hype and speculation. If timed right, these trends can be profitable. They only last a brief moment, as our attention spans are shortening and we quickly become bored and ready for the next cool new gadget.

So there you have it. At the end of the day, it’s your money and your choice what to invest in. Remember, you have your own expertise, your own goals and your own risk threshold. Do what you’re comfortable with. Wishing you much profit and enjoyment with your investments!
