This also is a busy month here at home, with events ranging from the Rose Rock Music Festival to the May Fair. Check out our calendar for some great activities.

When sightseeing, note that many museums have elevators (and even if none are open to the public in general, staff might allow you as a senior to use the freight elevator!). Take advantage of benches, and sit down frequently to rest and relax your feet.

The cruise line has won awards for its emphases on providing guests with an authentic ethnic immersion in the Aegean and Cuba, with activities including on-board cooking demonstrations of Cuban cuisine, Cuba Cocktail Clinics, Cuban music and shows, and lectures on topics such as the history of rum and cigars. A 15 percent discount is being offered for cruises departing this spring, summer and winter through Dec. 29 with departures from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Rates start at $1,495 per person (not including mandatory Cuban health insurance and visa.) The cruise line also requires that gratuities and an alcoholic beverage package be prepaid. The ship is virtually a cashless society.

“What intrigued me personally,” Hedges said, “was that the Celestyal Crystal circumnavigates the nation of Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean, so passengers get to experience Santiago de Cuba, the former capital and the seat of the revolution, as well as Trinidad and Havana in the west of Cuba.”

The silent auction will consist of approximately 30-50 items, ranging from artwork to restaurant packages.

Also, each club competes against one another in creating a basket for the live auction; the club whose basket raises the most money wins the competition.

“We are still developing this program, and I’m thinking along the lines of ‘how can I help 30 or more vets at a time’?” he said.

As a single parent, Braley accepted the newly created position as a way to provide a more consistent schedule for his three teenage children, but also as a way to provide yet another avenue of help to his fellow veterans.

“He’s perfect for this job, with his prior military background,” said Cleveland County Commissioner Darry Stacy. “That’s what first sergeants do–they protect the troops.”

El Toro Chino, which means “The Chinese Bull,” which opened at the end of November 2016, has already attracted a loyal fan base from across Cleveland County, including one couple who, co-owner and executive chef Gerry Reardon says, ate there for lunch and dinner five days one week after discovering the place.

Reardon says he and his wife, Jennifer, and the two other co-owners of the restaurant, Scott and Kathleen Shuler, decided on the name “because the bull is very prevalent in Asian and Latin culture.

Reardon says what sets El Toro Chino apart from many other restaurants is its cuisine, a unique fusion of Latin and Asian, but also “the fact we make everything from scratch.” As much as possible, they also purchase their ingredients, especially vegetables, locally.

We shared the Pollo Loco Tortilla Soup as an appetizer, though it’s actually an entrée. Served with fresh avocado slices and warm corn tortillas, we were wowed by its fresh, wholesome taste. I
