When I started working to find advertisers and staff to launch Cleveland County Lifestyle back in July 2015, little did I know the tremendous effort that would be involved in getting the magazine off the ground. Everything finally came together in January 2016, and the following month, February, I was highly gratified when the first copies of the magazine showed up on my doorstep as well as in your mailboxes. As you may recall, the cover story was on the history of chocolate, and featured chocolate creations from several area businesses.

What a year it has been since that launch! Though I have lived in this area for many years, I've learned so many new things about this wonderful community in the process of starting and growing this magazine. I can say with all sincerity that this endeavor has been one of the hardest things I have ever done–but also very rewarding.

I hope that you will enjoy this, our 13th, issue, in which we celebrate Cleveland County’s "Big 12 Women of Influence.” The women featured in this issue represent a wide range of professions and interests, from nonprofit to business, from the media to education and mental health. The beautiful Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History was the venue for the main photo shoot. We plan to make this an annual affair, so be thinking now of women you’d like to nominate in 2018.

brushes of varying sizes. Monochromatic paintings done only in ink tones are considered high form. When color is used, there must be some ink work in the paintings as well. What I wish for the viewer is to feel some kind of connection with the painting, and get a sense of peace.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BEGIN TO DABBLE IN ART, AND WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO PURSUE IT PROFESSIONALLY?

I was 30 when I first studied this style of art. I had dabbled with watercolor, but had no formal training. A friend recommended I take Ming-fai Yu’s class, and this started a journey of many years. I considered myself just a student for a long time, but after exhibiting and actually selling my art, I gradually accepted the “artist” profession.

I've studied with several well-known brushwork artists: Ming-fai Yu, Martha Rust, Nancy Rupp and Marie Young, to name a few. Martha mentored and taught me for many years. Her encouragement and

He retired in 2008 and began exploring his love of motorcycles. “I bought my first motorcycle in Shawnee,” he says, laughing. “When the dealership delivered it, I got on the bike and made it about 40 feet before I crashed into a neighbor’s yard.” Since then, Dick has become an experienced rider, taking trips to Sturgis and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Remembering his experiences in Vietnam is an important part of Dick’s healing process. “I have a tendency to collect books about Vietnam,” Dick says. “I have to see what other people experienced there. It reminds me how lucky I am to be a survivor. When I think about the ones that didn’t make it back, I have to keep that in sight.”

Each week, Dick spends time helping other veterans by volunteering with local organizations, including the Dale K. Graham Veteran’s Corner (dalekgrahamveteranscorner.org). Veteran’s Corner helps process Veteran's Administration claims for military veterans and their families, as well as providing assistance with medical care and other necessities.

“It’s the best therapy I’ve ever had,” he says. “I’ve volunteered with two different organizations for about 10 years. It’s been extremely rewarding to be able to help veterans get the help they need.”

Dick and Donna recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. “She’s the only one who would put up with me this long,” he says with a laugh. The longevity of his marriage ties directly into the advice that he passes on to others: “No matter what happens, decide what you are going to do and stay with it. No matter what, never give up. It’s a lifelong lesson.”

T

he Roman god Janus, closely associated with the month of January, is always depicted with two faces, one looking

forward to the future and the other looking back at the past.

Anyone seeking to look back, particularly those interested in genealogy, has a wonderful resource available in the Cleveland County Genealogical Society research library. Among its almost 6,000 items on paper, microfilm and digital data lies a wealth of original source material.

The group was established in 1980 as the Moore Pioneer Genealogical Society and took as one of its first tasks the creation and publication of indexes of the earliest Cleveland County courthouse records. Members also canvassed and published indexes of all county cemeteries, with the exception of Resthaven in Oklahoma City.

By the late 1980s, members became interested in the establishment of a research library. Norman Public Library didn’t have room for their growing collection of materials, so they set up a research area in various locations around Norman, moving over Among the society member volunteers ready to help researchers are Jean McCracken, president; Jane Harris, secretary; and Nova Hornback, first vice president .

“Instead of shelves, we started with boards on cinder blocks where we could stack things,” said Jean McCracken, current society president, laughing. Eventually, members helped build regular shelves, and the collection continued to grow.

McCracken said it is estimated that only 10 percent of genealogy source material is available online, so it can be very important to an individual doing research to have a site such as the library.

Although the major focus is on Cleveland County, research materials are by no means limited to that topic. Also collected are Native American records and materials; information on Oklahoma Territory, Indian Territory and the state of Oklahoma; items pertaining to other states, particularly those along common migratory routes to Oklahoma; and items of a general nature such as military history and immigration.

Books and files on many subjects help with genealogy research.

In addition to the cemeteries, the society has indexed Cleveland County divorces, Civil Court records, land patents, marriages, naturalizations, tax books, widows’ pensions and funeral home records. The records available begin in 1890.

Scrapbooks contain clippings on marriages, engagements and obituaries, indexed by surname. Other files contain information on surnames, localities and general subjects. The library also offers city and telephone directories, many school yearbooks, even some school grade books, and some county church histories.

The Native American collection includes some tribal rolls, marriage records and vital records such as births, marriages and deaths, mostly for tribes that have resided in Oklahoma. While the library does not attempt to provide comprehensive coverage on this topic, volunteers will guide researchers toward appropriate materials and teach genealogical skills to help them.

“We encourage those who wish to find their ancestral roll numbers to visit the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City,” a society brochure says, “where the records they seek may be found and the staff is familiar with the resources.”

The microfilm collection includes early-day Cleveland County newspapers, some volumes of Indian pioneer history, Oklahoma tract books, census records, probate files, mortgage records, deeds records, tax lists, marriage records and divorce records.

Files are indexed by surname to help those looking for family details.

Currently, the research library is located just inside the south entrance to the Community Services Building on the northwest corner of East Main Street and 12th Avenue Northeast. It is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. All research is free of charge except for the cost of copies, and member volunteers are on hand to direct searchers to the materials most likely to be of use to them.

The society will be moving its collections to the new Norman Public Library, to be located north of Andrews Park, when it is completed in about three years. At that time, the library staff will take over the administration of the collection. Society volunteers currently are weeding out books and materials that will not go into the library collection. Kathryn Ramsay, Norman Public Library genealogy librarian, is cataloging the books to NPL protocols.
