hoo-hoo! Summer is here, at last! For many of us, this is a time to carve out some “me” or family downtime, depending on one’s current circumstances.

In this–the “Men’s Issue”–we take a look at some high-end “boys’ toys”–specifically, off-road vehicles and speed boats–the acquisition of which would definitely ramp up the summer fun. Of course, these high-dollar purchases don’t appeal only to men; more and more women are pursuing traditionally male-oriented sports, and many forms of water sports appeal to the whole family.

Also in this issue, you’ll read about a unique business in Norman that has been featured on The History Channel. The Crucible has forged a successful business that helps envision, create and install bronze sculptures for the private sector, governments and municipalities across the nation.

It’s June, and jazz aficionados across Oklahoma and beyond know that this means the return of the popular Jazz in June festival in Norman. Now in its 33rd year, the jazz festival continues to offer an outstanding lineup of bands performing everything from blues to bebop–all for free (though contributions are welcome!). Look inside for a behindthe-scenes peek at this delightful Norman tradition.

Looking for something new to do this summer that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, and is close by? Inside, you will read about the newly opened Central Park in Moore.

In addition to the recreational and aquatics centers, this park features a multi-use trail, handicap-accessible playground, a farm market and Friday food trucks.

Also in this issue, you’ll read about a newly released book on Norman’s Navy years, a Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity-University of Oklahoma College of Architecture team effort to build a compressed earth block house story for a local family, and a summer reading (and more) program targeting people of all ages. obody is happy when their vehicle breaks down or unexpectedly requires repair, and for many (especially) women, the thought of dealing with mechanics is fraught with anxiety.

Both Cochran and Henning said their customers may expect competitive pricing, though not necessarily the cheapest. Some competitors may resort to gimmicks to get customers in the door, then pressure them to perform other work, or use lower-quality parts. Christian Brothers save their customers money by running thorough diagnostics, so they repair only what’s necessary.

As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. In this case, the “pudding” is the high percentage of repeat (loyal) customers as well as a healthy referral rate, reported at both locations.

Both men bring a passion to their work and to those they serve.

Cochran, a former college football coach who spent many summers abroad as a teacher at youth camps on American football, said he has been able to draw upon those experiences in his current endeavor.

“These experiences taught me that wherever you go in this world we are basically the same and all want the same things. We all want to be treated fairly, build great friendships, have a purpose in life and ultimately be a part of something bigger than ourselves,” he said.

any of us often think about our physical fitness, but do we consider what it means to be financially fit? If you haven’t, you are certainly not alone. However, personal financial fitness is essential to our overall well-being. It should rise to the top of our daily thoughts.

What is financial fitness exactly? It is living within your means so that you can provide for yourself and honor your commitments. It is a lifetime skill that is as important to someone just starting out as it is to someone ready to retire.

Below are 10 best practices to help keep you on the healthy side of the financial fitness equation.

A Unique Partnership

OU, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECT TO BUILD CEB HOUSE DEEMED (PARTIAL) SUCCESS

artnership can be a beautiful thing, especially when two worthy groups come together to work on a solution to a valuable cause.

Nonprofits have many amazing assets, but partnering with university students can open up infinite opportunities. In 2014, volunteers with the Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity teamed up with faculty in the Division of Construction Science in the University of Oklahoma College of Architecture to find—and build—a viable option for affordable, energy-efficient housing.

The OU students designed, tested and constructed the building materials that would be used to create a house from sustainable Compressed Earth Block, made partially from dirt excavated from a site on the OU Research Campus. Together with Habitat for Humanity volunteers, they built this new house, alongside a traditionally built house, on East Apache Street in Norman so the advantages could be quantitatively evaluated.

The project took over a year to complete, and for the past two years, two different local families have been blessed with permanent housing and an opportunity to make an impact in others’ lives and future shelter possibilities.

I spoke with Matthew Reyes, assistant professor of construction science, and Linda Banta, executive director for Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity, to learn more about each and

how countless groups can benefit from similar partnerships and thinking outside the box.

The OU team was responsible for the house design, manufacturing the CEBs, coordinating the construction of the foundation, installing the CEB walls and putting a plaster finish on the interior of the house over the CEB walls. Banta met weekly with the OU team to work out any construction issues, coordinate and plan the next steps for the project.

Funding for the project came from a $90,000 grant the College of Architecture received in 2012 to study the cost and savings of a home built using compressed earth blocks. Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity supplied the construction manager, volunteers, the family and some additional funding.

Data on the CEB house is still coming in but, Reyes notes, “At a glance, the CEB house appears to consume less electricity than an identically sized wood-framed house.” The family residing in the CEB house wasn’t able to offer a comparison since their prior living conditions were so poor; however, according to Banta, they love the home.

Unfortunately, construction took “a lot more time and effort for us and for the College of Architecture to make it happen,” Banta shared.

In the end, they determined the build wasn’t cost-effective because of the intensive labor that went into making the blocks. Had it not been

done by volunteers, the build costs easily could have doubled that of a standard house. But this is just the first house to be built like this in Oklahoma, and both groups are looking into other alternatives methods that could be faster, less expensive and more energy-efficient.

Reyes believes this is “a viable construction method in this area if the circumstances are right–probably not on a large scale, but on certain individual homes.

“When a home lends itself to maximizing the benefits of earthen construction (layout, orientation, finishes, systems, etc.), then there are definitely benefits to building with CEBs.” Both groups really enjoyed the partnership, and the OU students received invaluable hands-on experience that could never be gained in a classroom.

“The students all had a good time working on the project, and the ones who were heavily involved learned a lot about the planning, design, coordination and construction process,” Reyes said.

“In a discipline like ours, architecture and construction science, where there is a lot of visual and hands-on content, it (hands-on experience) is especially critical. What they learn in the classroom enhances what they are able to do outside the classroom, which in turn enhances their classroom learning. It really is a great cycle that enriches the learning process.”

“As challenging as the project was, it was also very rewarding,” Banta says. “Working with the architects and engineers from OU was a great experience. … When it enhances what they are learning, it is an even more powerful opportunity.”

“K

eep it simple.” This saying could aptly be given to the board of Jazz in June, whose recipe for a successful festival starts with ingredients of simplicity: provide free concerts in established venues, and the jazz enthusiasts and the curious will come.

“We believe there should be no barriers to people hearing live quality music,” said Karen Holp, KGOU public radio general director and Jazz in June board member since 1990.

Jazz in June has been around since 1984. Created through the Cimarron Circuit Opera Company and the Norman Arts and Humanities Council, it initially drew 300 people.

Now in its 33rd year, Jazz in June’s events, highlighted with concerts June 16 and 17 at Brookhaven Village, 36th Avenue Northwest and Robinson, and June 18 at Andrews Park, 201 W. Daws, are expected to attract over 50,000 people, plus another 100,000 through radio coverage from KGOU public radio.

Based on surveys from 2015, according to Norman Hammon, Jazz in June’s director of development, nearly 73 percent of attendees were from Norman, with about 19 percent coming from Oklahoma City and the surrounding metro area. But that doesn't mean the festival doesn’t extend beyond the area.

People come from as far away as Australia for the event, Hammon said. And often, people who have moved away and had loved Jazz in June will plan trips back to visit friends and relatives around the festival.

Also, KGOU records the concerns and gives them to other public radio stations, packaged as “Best of Jazz in June.” These stations extend the reach of Jazz in June, particularly around the state, by playing these recordings as part of their programming.

“KGOU has been our partner since 1985 or 1986,” Holp said.

“We broadcast the Best of Jazz in June here and especially in Tulsa, Lawton, and Stillwater.”

This policy, Holp said, goes back to her statement about making jazz as accessible as possible.

Of course, putting together three nights of quality concerts with bands with regional and national recognition doesn't happen without money. And the bands do get paid for their performances. So sponsorships become vital.

Brookhaven Village, site of the first two nights of Jazz in June, has been a major sponsor since 1987, and many other businesses also provide sponsorship. Individuals also can donate as Friends of Jazz in June.

And while audiences don’t have to pay to attend the concerts, volunteers pass around buckets during the concert so people can donate whatever they feel they can to keep the festival going. Ron Jones, board member for the past three years, said audiences are very generous.

Hammon explained that the “bucket brigade” brings in $3,500 to $4,500 a year, or about 2 to 3 percent of the total budget. Festival-goers also show their generosity in the annual “Friends of Jazz in June” pledge campaign, raises about $14,000-$15,000 from about 120 donors, plus another $2,000-$3,000 in legacy and endowment support.

The concerts, Hammon said, try to cover a number of subgenres within jazz, based on what audiences have liked in the past. Thursday night’s concert, for example, is titled “Blues Under the Stars,” and features blues bands that tend to be popular with younger audiences. Jones said the younger crowds are more apt to attend the Thursday night concerts, which have over the years become the night for the blues bands to play.

Indeed, Hammon said, over 27 percent of the audience polled list blues as a favorite subgenre, followed by salsa/reggae at 16 percent and big band at 15 percent, according to stats from 2015 surveys. Other subgenres that get tracked include be-bop, Dixieland, smooth, world and fusion.

Whatever the subgenre, Holp said, Jazz in June organizers said they hope to make this year’s formula work again, and attract both longtime jazz enthusiasts and those who want to explore a form of American music they have never considered before.

Full Steam Ahead Summer Reading Program Keeps Learning Going Into the Summer ARTICLE CHRISTIAN POTTS

T

he Pioneer Library System’s Summer Reading Program returns in June and July, with a lot more than just books–although the library has a lot of those, too, with more than 700,000 items in its collection.

Summer Reading brings an array of themed performances and ways for readers of all ages to interact with their local library. This year’s themes are “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” for children; “Get in the Game: Read” for teens; and “Exercise Your Mind. Read!” for adults.

It’s a chance to keep kids learning, but perhaps not in the same straightforward means they would during the school year.

“When you’re delivering content, try to do it in a way that’s interesting and shrouded in trickery,” said musician Kevin Dolan.

“Essentially, a good teacher will disguise the material in a certain way, and music has got such an emotional connection. The brain connects to it in so many ways, and we still remember things that we might have heard when we were kids.”

Dolan, a Kansas City-based musician better known by his performing name Dino O’Dell, is one of the touring performances that will go to each of Pioneer’s 11 hometown libraries.

Their mission is to entertain, teach some things but also get readers into the library. That’s where they can find that extensive library collection and connect with the words on the page of a book or the screen of an eReader.

Another feature getting its first summer of activity within the library is its new Maker Mobile. The Maker Mobile will bring STEM-focused programming (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) into communities by literally bringing it to them.

It is a workshop on wheels, made from the frame of a Ford truck and featuring such items as a three-dimensional 18

printer and scanner, CNC mill, laser cutter and laptops, as well as Wi-Fi access and an informational touchscreen television that will allow customers to learn about the library’s downloadable collection through OverDrive and many other online features and will tour the system at various events.

Programs of this sort also will be brought into libraries by the Oklahoma Museum Network, the outreach wing of Science Museum Oklahoma, which actually will perform maker-type programs not just for children but teen visitors and adults as well.

“There’s a big push, a move to go back to the basics with the maker movement, and people like that they can make their own cheaper and get just the things that they want,” said Eileen Castle, outreach coordinator with OMN. ven if you’ve never set foot inside The Crucible, odds are that you’ve gazed upon some of their handiwork. The artists at the Norman-based art foundry cast the bronze Centennial Land Run Monument, the work of Oklahoma artist Paul Moore, in Bricktown near downtown Oklahoma City, featuring 45 statues of the earliest Oklahomans. Or perhaps you’ve noticed the Pastoral Dreamer sculpture on the campus of the University of Oklahoma, a triple-life-sized bronze man by artist David L. Phelps relaxing on Parrington Oval.

The Crucible’s reach expands well-past the boundaries of our state. This full-service foundry has helped envision, create and install bronze sculptures for the private sector, governments and municipalities across the nation. MEMORIALIZING HISTORY

The artistic integrity that shows in The Crucible’s work is a family affair.

Mark Palmerton began working in his father’s foundry at the age of 7, and it has become a lifelong passion. Mark and his brother Steve own The Crucible, where Steve serves as the artist-in-residence. The Crucible began casting its first pieces in 1999 and opened an exhibit featuring the work of four local artists in early 2000. For more than 15 years, the brothers have worked with a staff of more than a dozen artists and artisans to bring their sculptures to life.

Housed in the historic former Carey Lumber Building at 110 East Tonhawa in Norman, The Crucible’s headquarters also include a 1,400-square-foot gallery and outdoor sculpture garden. Smaller versions of many of the foundry’s sculptures are on display in the gallery, along with artwork from local and national artists. Larger pieces are on display in the lawn surrounding the gallery, creating a relaxing sculpture garden for visitors to enjoy.

“The Carey Lumber Building just felt like the perfect home for us. It’s a little piece of Norman’s history, which fits since we work to memorialize history,” explains Stephanie Enouen, who manages the gallery and serves as Mark Palmerton’s assistant.

of history, we are just there to be behind the scenes. Without the foundry, it can’t happen, and we love being part of the process.”

A DISTINCTIVE PROCESS

The Crucible is one of only three foundries in the nation using ceramic shells to cast large pieces, some weighing in at more than 500 pounds. The Crucible’s kiln is one of the largest in the region, allowing them to create sculptures on a variety of scales. The staff of The Crucible works directly with artists and sculptors to create their pieces, as well as helping clients with conception, creation, delivery and installation.

“A person or business that has an interest in bronze sculptures needn't look any further for fine art,” adds Enouen. “For people interested in owning something that will outlive them, bronze is the way to go. Many of our clients appreciate the opportunity to put something in their yard or home that will truly make it one-of-a-kind. Our sculptures allow people to create a sanctuary in their own world and enhance their personal space.”

The process of creating their sculptures is a combination of art, technology, skill and choreography. Once the artist creates a smaller scale version of sculpture, the design then goes through a digital scanning process. Working with the digital file, The Crucible can produce the design at any size, on any scale. The Crucible’s production system then cuts the design out of lightweight foam, which is sprayed with clay and used to make the molds. The molds are filled with bronze during a pour, an extremely complicated process involving three staff members.

“They have worked together doing pours for years,” says Enouen.

“It really is like choreography. They fall right in step with each other.”

The finished pieces are welded together as needed, given the desired patina; the statue is then finished and prepared for installation.

In addition to creating larger-than-life-sized statues, The Crucible works to strengthen ties in the community. The Crucible recently rejoined Norman’s 2nd Friday Art Walk.

“We will primarily showcase the gallery and the artwork on display,” Enouen notes, explaining that the very nature of the foundry makes tours impossible. “We love to have the opportunities to network and to create awareness about who we are and what we do. We are strong supporters of promoting the arts in Norman.”

The Crucible also is working to partner with local food trucks and distilleries to add to their art walk offerings.

Eounen has spent nearly three years working for the Palmertons, and says she can’t ever see herself working anywhere else.

“These guys really are far and above anyone else in the industry,” she says. “You aren’t going to get a better bronze. They are sculptors themselves, so they understand artists. They grew up in a foundry, so they understand bronze work.”

For Eounen and the rest of the staff of The Crucible, the art they create serves an even higher purpose.

“Art can create emotion, provide education, inspire us and help us find a different perspective,” she concludes. “Sculptures have the ability to go beyond words, beyond pictures. You can literally see the artist’s hands on a sculpture, and feel what he or she felt. And for us, it is all about reminding people that there is fine art to be found right here in Norman, right here in Cleveland County, right here in Oklahoma. Locally, there are things that are worthy of admiration and appreciation."

REACHING A NATIONAL AUDIENCE

“We were contacted by a media company kind of out of the blue, and it eventually turned into the show. We didn't actually want to be famous, we just wanted foundry work,” Eounen recalls, laughing.

t’s a great time to live in Moore! The longawaited, eagerly anticipated Central Park– featuring state-of-the-art recreation and aquatics centers as well as a host of other amenities for young and old–held its public grand opening ceremonies on April 16. (At press time, work was still ongoing at the Aquatics Center.)

Ground was broken for the 51-acre park, located in the heart of Moore on the corner of Fourth and Broadway, near the railroad tracks, during a public ceremony May 9, 2014. Designs for the recreational and aquatics centers were unveiled on Dec. 11, 2013.

“We are excited to open The Station at Central Park. We think it is a game-changing quality-of-life facility for our community. No matter the age, there is something

for everyone at Central Park,” said Todd Jenson, assistant city manager.

In addition to the approximately 53,00-square-foot recreation center and 45,000-square-foot aquatic center, Central Park boasts a large amphitheater, a 21.7-mile-long multipurpose lighted trail, a handicap-accessible playground and even a multipurpose pavilion/farmers’ market.

Day, 15-visit, season and annual passes are available for the rec and aquatics centers.

Discounts are offered for Moore residents, active-duty military and seniors.

Another exciting feature of the park is Food Truck Fridays, aka Lunch at Central Park. Every Friday through September, park visitors, including employees at nearby businesses, are invited to purchase Mexican fare, barbecue, and hot dogs and hamburgers.

AQUATICS CENTER

Moore has not had a pool for several years–since the demolition of the facility at the Fifth Street Park in 2011.

Families as well as individuals of all ages will enjoy the Aquatic Center’s offerings, which include: • a lazy river • two large slides • a diving pool with two diving boards (1 meter and 3 meters high) • an aquatic climbing wall • lap lanes • a children’s wading pool with slide, spray tower and spray features • a water basketball goal • log roll An outdoor concession area and locker room and showers round out the amenities.

Drawing on Central Park's railroad station theme, the center's entrance was designed to resemble a train depot. A model train engine donated by Dental Depot is situated near the entrance, where it's attracting children and families for photo-taking and play.

BOOK EXAMINES NORMAN’S NAVY YEARS

S

ue Schrems was concerned.

She was afraid a period in Cleveland County history that played a major role in the creation of Norman as it is now was being forgotten.

Most of the physical evidence had already been torn down and built over; the people who had lived through the era were passing on; and many of the memories had been reduced to catch phrases almost lost in time: North Base, South Base, Mount Williams.

So the retired professor and history researcher/author decided she needed to write another book. The result is the pictorial Norman’s Navy Years: 1942-1959, published by Arcadia Publishing and co-authored by retired Marine Lt. Col. Vernon R. Maddux.

The two are residents of Norman and board members of the Cleveland County Historical Society.

It’s always a little startling for newcomers to the county to learn that during World War II and into the Korean War era, the Navy had several installations in land-locked Norman, Oklahoma.

Schrems credits much of the spark that attracted the bases to an energetic civic and community leader named T. Jack Foster, once Norman’s youngest mayor and then a mover and shaker in the Chamber of Commerce.

By the late 1930s he began to believe conditions in Europe were bringing the possibility of a world conflict ever closer. He also was very aware of the hard conditions brought on by the Great Depression and the desperate need for an improved economy in the area.

Connecting the dots, he worked to get the Chamber and the University of Oklahoma interested in providing technical training facilities to help both the military as war loomed and the Norman area. Other farsighted men such as Neil Johnson with the Chamber and Savoie Lottinville and Joseph Brandt of OU joined Foster in numerous trips to Washington, D.C., to convince military planners that Norman would be an excellent spot for training sites. A university that had been providing aeronautical studies since 1927, an airport already in operation at Westheimer Field and plenty of room to expand added to their arguments.

When the Navy finally decided to build in Norman, the results were almost beyond belief. The population of Norman doubled. There were 11,000 town residents; the Navy bases brought in 20,000.

The Bull Horn was the base paper for Naval Air Technical Training Center, popularly known as the South Base.

There were two major installations–the Naval Air Station, or North Base, was located in the Westheimer Field area, where pilots were trained to fly. The Naval Air Technical Training School, or South Base, was across from the current location of Lloyd Noble Center. It was there that mechanics, including a number of WAVES, the women in service, were trained to maintain and repair naval aircraft. There was also a Naval Air Gunnery School east of Lexington and an outdoor gunnery practice range called Mount Williams after the first base commander, J.W. Williams Jr. It was visible from Interstate 35 until this century.

But those facilities were only the beginning. Major construction was required to provide adequate water and sewer facilities, roads and infrastructure lacking in the town. Norman saw a boom in building that could not have been envisioned even by the most optimistic city leaders.

To make life as fulfilling as possible for the trainees, the base provided a hospital, also open to military dependents, chapel facilities, community center, clubhouse, theaters and entertainment venues, post office and transportation opportunities to get the trainees to Norman restaurants and movie theaters and to the attractions of Oklahoma City.

The entire population of Norman was enlisted to provide for the needs of the naval personnel. Barracks were built for single men and women but rental units were needed for those who were married with families. Stores and restaurants boomed and had to be updated and enlarged to cope with the demand.

Norman was never to be the same.

Scores of vintage photographs track the history of this period, detailing many of the changes made in the town and its surroundings. For anyone interested in the history of Cleveland County, it is a valuable addition to their library.

Changing Gender Roles

LET’S CREATE OUR OWN FAIRY TALES WORDS JERRI CULPEPPER

I

grew up in a female-dominated family, though my father never seemed to mind sharing his time at home with a wife and three daughters. If fact, I know he treasured his family time and, as far as I know, he never regretted not having a son.

But that meant I grew up without the insights that girls with at least one male sibling gain, though my closest childhood friends were four boys who lived two houses down from us. Being a tomboy, I never gave it a second thought. Friends are friends.

But when it came to writing this column for the Men’s Issue, I found it difficult to come up with a theme. I even tried sending out a request on my personal Facebook page, as well as the magazine’s, asking for feedback from my male friends and our male readers describing what it means to be a man today. Alas, no responses. Zip. Perhaps like me, they found the answers to be illusive.

So here, instead, are my thoughts. Not as illuminating as those responses likely would have been, but here they are.

As girls, we are raised on fairy tales of daring-do princes riding to our rescue. As far as I could tell, the only thing the princess or would-be princess had going in her favor was her looks, and perhaps a single-minded focus on becoming royalty. Not talent, not intelligence, not wit – just looks.

Of course, the prince in said tales, along with his second cousin, the knight on a white charger, were handsome as well as fearless. But were they funny?

Smart? Considerate?

And what if the princess or princess-to-be wasn’t that great looking, but she was fearless and funny? What if the prince or knight hated unnecessary violence (even with dragons), and preferred the company of smart and witty friends of both sexes over a beauty queen wanna-be? Much better story, don’t you think?

While my examples above are intended to be humorous, the reality is less so; following societal norms, fewer girls enroll in sports, and tend not to pursue studies (and thus careers) in fields requiring higher math and science skills. Boys, whatever their interest or physical build, are pushed into contact sports and discouraged from pursuing “feminine” pursuits, such as ballet or nursing. Women are criticized for acting “aggressively” in the workplace when they try to get ahead. Men are criticized for showing their emotions or for pursuing a nontraditional role, such as homemaker.

I believe that we are all diminished when we are told to act one way and not the other, based solely on our sex. We create inequalities in the workplace when certain occupations are deemed appropriate for one sex but not the other; it creates a situation similar to the “separate-but-equal” doctrine pushed by whites in the 1950s.

I believe both sexes–and society–are the losers when it comes to such stereotyping. This country needs leadership, courage and strength, but the need is at least as great for tolerance, tact and empathy. And none of these traits is uniquely feminine or masculine.

OK, so this isn’t your traditional “Men’s Issue” essay.

Take it for what it’s worth. I hope the next time I issue a request for men’s input, you will consider responding.

But from my beloved father, who passed away too early, I learned that men aren’t just providers and protectors: they can be philosophers and Kleenexwielders, teachers and supporters. And from the boys down the street, I learned that friendships needn’t run along traditional gender lines.

To our male readers, I hope you enjoyed this issue, and that you have a terrific summer, no matter how you define fun.
