CELEBRATE ST. LOUIS

There’s something powerful about stepping away from routines and allowing yourself to simply explore. In a world that celebrates productivity, schedules and constant movement, we sometimes forget that some of life’s most meaningful moments happen when we slow down long enough to discover something unexpected.

Lately, Gordon and I have been reminded how important it is to create space for adventure, curi osity and connection. Sometimes exploration looks like a bucket-list trip. Other times, it’s as simple as trying something new together, finding a hidden café in town, riding bikes through the neighborhood or laughing over a board game on the patio as the sun sets.
One of our most unforgettable experiences recently was horseback riding through the breathtaking trails of Arizona. For a moment, it felt as though time stood still. No phones. No distractions. Just nature, open skies, horses and the quiet beauty of being fully present. Those are the moments that remind us what truly matters.
This month’s Explore edition celebrates the joy of discovery in all forms: from the incredible story of Twister, the horse that paints, to unforgettable getaway inspiration with a Rockstar Cabin stay, timeless outdoor luxury from Prestige Pools, and so much more designed to inspire your next adventure.
Maybe exploration isn’t always about going far away. Maybe it’s about saying yes to something different, becoming a beginner again or making room for moments that aren’t perfectly planned.
Here’s to making memories, embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in the unexplored.
Happy Exploring!

New, Local Interest Books To Explore: "How Forest Park Was Made" & "Forest Park St. Louis Gathering Place Since 1876"
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Forest Park is a crown jewel of St. Louis, along with being the focus of two new books.

Ian grew up in the countryside outside of St. Louis. He says Forest Park became a frequent destination to hunt down adventure, refuel imagination and stumble into learning. Still a St. Louis native, Ian regularly sees and reports on illustrated characters emerging from the world around him, particularly when he’s surrounded by his wife and three kids roaming the city’s most magical destinations.
Imagine Forest Park without the Saint Louis Zoo? What about the Art Museum or The Muny or the Jewel Box? Journey through time in Ian’s book to see how favorite Forest Park destinations first came to be. From the World’s Fair to local wonderland, discover how Forest Park was transformed through two centuries into a dazzling destination of art, history and science all packed in a single park in St. Louis.
Reedy Press published Ian’s new, hardcover picture book, which is available where books are sold for $22.50 each.
by Amanda E. Doyle and Cameron Collins

From its signature institutions and events to the 15 million-plus yearly visitors who use Forest Park for solace, for refuge, for recreation, for family time, for self-expression, for mental health and for connection, the park offers something for all. The durability and flexibility that came to define the green heart of the city have made it the unquestionable gathering place for residents and visitors alike, from 1876 until today. Explore the pages of Amanda’s and Cameron’s books to be inspired anew by the history and spirit of Forest Park.
Amanda says she finds intrigue and adventures large and small from her home base in south St. Louis City. Cameron has called St. Louis home since 1995. They state the creation and preservation of Forest Park is at its heart a very American story, in keeping with the character of a still-developing city on the cusp of the Gilded Age; St. Louis nurtured in its civic soul the tension of a self-made metropolis.
Reedy Press also published this book, which costs $45 each.

His name is Twist-of-Fate, but everyone calls him Twister. Part thoroughbred and part draft horse, Twister is known as a warmblood horse, a combination that gives him both his good looks and kind disposition. It also makes him a fast learner and a good role model.
By all accounts, Twister's lucky to be alive at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, a division of the Humane Society of Missouri that's a safe refuge for abused and neglected farm animals. “It’s like a dog and cat rescue, but for farm animals,” says Ranch Manager Anna Gates.
Twister is one of about 150 animals living on 165 acres of woodland near Union, Missouri. “It’s a haven for hundreds of abused and neglected horses, goats, pigs, ducks and other farm animals. The ranch is one of the most comprehensive horse and farm animal care and rehabilitation centers in the country," Anna says.
Along with caring for the animals, ranch staffers provide hands-on humane education experiences for both children and adults.
Twister’s mother, “Mama,” was one of 42 horses being transported in 2006 to an Illinois slaughter house on a double-decker semi-truck when it overturned on a Missouri interstate. Mama was carrying Twister at the time, which Anna says turned out to be a true

twist-of-fate if not a miracle. Mama was one of 26 equines that survived the fateful crash. All of the other pregnant horses lost their babies that night.
But the accident ironically saved Mama’s life, and in turn, Twister’s. The now 19-year-old Twister was born healthy seven months after the accident on April 18, 2007. Every year Longmeadow celebrates Twister’s birthday with a huge party at the ranch: a flagship event known as the Spring Fling.
Though most of the animals on the property are available for adoption, Twister can be sponsored but not adopted. He's part of the Barn Buddy program, which helps feed, board and provide medical care for all of the rescued farm animals, including other horses, mini donkeys, pigs, birds and alpacas.

But what's unique about the 1,200pound equine are his artistic abilities.
“Twister was born healthy and funny,” Anna says. “He has had a personality since the day he was born. As a colt, and a yearling too, he was always very animated. He loves people.”
Twister also serves in the Longmeadow’s lesson programs.
Longmeadow volunteers noticed early on that Twister was always “in their back pockets,” Anna says. “In other words, he would follow them around

and use his lips to feel or nuzzle.” The workers used positive reinforcement and clicker training to teach him, first to hold a paint brush, then to bring it to the paper, then eventually to paint.
“Twister is quite the artist,” Anna declares. “He creates beautiful, abstract works of art. His one-of-a-kind masterpieces are on display and for sale in the ranch’s gallery and on its website. The money made from them supports Longmeadow’s rescue mission, including grass hay and pelleted horse feed and apple treats, deworming, vaccinations, hoof and nail trimming, vet visits and special veterinary dentist visits.
“We like to say Twister is like Picasso,” Anna says. “He paints abstract pictures. He gives back.”
Originally known as Packwood Longmeadow Farm, the ranch was purchased in 1988, with a generous bequest from George Packwood Jr., of land to be used specifically for the care of ranch animals. A signal construction foreman for the Frisco Railroad, George's wealth came from creating a mild industrial soap and a special soap dispenser. After launching his business in 1926, he sold it to the Calgon Corporation in the 1950s.

Prestige Pools & Spas Celebrates 40 Years Of Creating Sophisticated Outdoor Environments Defined By Craftsmanship, Innovation And Enduring Legacy

Celebrating 40 years in business, Prestige Pools & Spas stands as one of the St. Louis region’s most enduring and sophisticated names in luxury outdoor living. What began in 1985 as a family-operated swimming pool company founded by Fran and Joan Struckhoff has evolved into a premier design-build firm specializing in architecturally integrated outdoor environments that blend craftsmanship, engineering precision and elevated lifestyle design. Today, the company operates under the ownership of Lucas

“The most rewarding thing about building the business is the friendships we make,” Mike reflects.
“A lot of customers have moved two or three times, and are now on their third pool with us. Some are now having us build pools for their children. That kind of trust means everything to us.”
Poelker, alongside General Manager Mike Angelo, son of the company’s founders. Together, they continue to advance a philosophy rooted not merely in construction, but in the cultivation of meaningful outdoor experiences tailored to the lives of their clients.
“We believe luxury outdoor living should be deeply personal, designed around what ‘oasis’ means to each homeowner,” Lucas explains. “Our goal is to create spaces that are not only visually striking, but comfortable, memorable and truly reflective of the families who live in them.”
That philosophy has become increasingly relevant as outdoor living has transformed over the past four decades from a supplementary amenity into a central architectural and social feature of the modern home. According to Lucas, early pool design trends often emphasized geometric simplicity and utilitarian recreation. Contemporary clients, however, increasingly envision expansive, resort-inspired environments incorporating outdoor kitchens, pergolas, integrated fire features, custom patios, water elements and fully curated entertainment spaces.
The Prestige Pools team distinguishes themselves not only through aesthetic vision, but also through technical versatility. The company remains one of the few firms in the St. Louis market specializing in all three major pool construction categories: concrete gunite pools, steel-wall vinyl liner pools and fiberglass pools. All aspects of design, construction and outdoor integration are performed in-house, enabling a high level of continuity and quality control.
Over the course of four decades, Prestige Pools has built more than 2,000 pools throughout the region while earning 400-plus industry design awards through organizations including the National Spa and Pool Institute, the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance and the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals. Yet despite its accolades, company leadership consistently returns to a far more personal measure of success: relationships.
Beyond its portfolio of award-winning projects, Prestige Pools has cultivated something increasingly rare within the luxury home industry: institutional loyalty. In an era marked by workforce turnover and transactional service models, Lucas says the company’s multidecade employee retention reflects a culture
grounded in respect, stability and the enduring belief that both clients and employees should be treated like family.
“The most rewarding thing about building the business is the friendships we make,” Mike reflects. “A lot of customers have moved two or three times, and are now on their third pool with us. Some are now having us build pools for their children. That kind of trust means everything to us.”
Indeed, continuity has become one of the company’s defining characteristics. Several employees who helped establish Prestige Pools during its early years remain with the company today, with many having dedicated more than 30 years to the business. Mike says that remarkable longevity is inseparable from the culture established by his parents decades ago.
“Treating people right, both customers and employees, is what keeps a business going long after others disappear,” he says. “That culture started with my parents, and it’s still the foundation of who we are.”
That familial philosophy extends well beyond the workplace. Many of the company’s clients include second-generation homeowners whose parents once entrusted Prestige Pools with building their family pools decades earlier. The result is a rare sense of continuity in an industry often driven by transactions rather than relationships.
The company’s early years were not without challenges. Mike recalls that the swimming pool industry of the 1980s was overwhelmingly male-dominated, requiring his mother, Joan Struckhoff, to overcome persistent skepticism despite becoming one of the region’s most successful pool sales professionals.
“My mom had to overcome the stereotypes of what a woman would know about building pools. But over time, she became one of the top salespeople in the industry and helped establish Prestige Pools as one of the largest pool companies in the region," Mike says.
For Mike, the company’s 40th anniversary represents more than corporate longevity. He says it reflects the endurance of a multigenerational vision grounded equally in innovation, craftsmanship and human connection. “I feel such a sense of pride in knowing we've been in business for 40 years and still are going. To see how much it has grown since we started is incredible.”

Celebrate St. Louis is more than a festival or fireworks around the nation’s birthday. It's a celebration of the people, organizations, businesses and leaders who continue shaping the future of St. Louis. The event

highlights the energy, resilience and momentum building across the city while bringing the community together for two nights of entertainment, education and connection.

Families, neighbors, visitors, community and business leaders from across the region will gather downtown and under the Arch to celebrate not only the nation’s history, but also the future of St. Louis.
At the heart of this year’s event is Innovation Village, an immersive experience showcasing the forward-thinking companies, entrepreneurs, institutions and ideas helping define the future of the city. From healthcare and technology to education and entrepreneurship, Innovation Village will spotlight the future-facing ecosystem growing across the St. Louis region and the people driving meaningful progress and innovation every day. Celebrate St. Louis is made possible through the generosity of corporate sponsors and individual donors united by a shared belief in the future of St. Louis. Their involvement reflects a conviction that St. Louis deserves moments that bring people together, inspire civic pride, and strengthen community connections. The event is designed to remind residents and visitors alike that

St. Louis thrives when culture, innovation, and community come together.
“St. Louis has extraordinary people working toward something extraordinary. Celebrate St. Louis is about making that visible and giving our community a reason to believe in what comes next,” says Michael Ruwitch, COO of Celebrate St. Louis.
As fireworks burst above the Arch, drone shows illuminate the night sky, the parade marches through downtown, and music fills the air beneath the Arch with electrifying energy, the message behind this year’s celebration will be clear. St. Louis is a city with momentum, heart, energy, pride and a future worth celebrating together for generations to come.
And while the celebration may end after July Fourth, the momentum behind it will not. Celebrate St. Louis is intended to spark a renewed sense of pride and connection throughout the region. It's the beginning of a new wave of energy, optimism and belief in what St. Louis can become when the community comes together as one city with a shared vision for the future. Legend Lodge: Where Luxury Meets Rock’n’Roll Edge And Total Escape At This Publishers’ Destination Pick

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN MEDIA GROUP
For a backstage pass to peace, passion and pure forest aura, head to Legend Lodge. This newly renovated, exclusive rockstar retreat on 17 private acres of secluded woods is located in Logan, Ohio, just 6 miles from Hocking Hills State Park.

"Mark and I wanted to create property located in a place where people could fully escape, unwind and recharge while having the most unusually amazing experience. We found Hocking Hills, Ohio, to provide this perfect mix of nature, activities and local outdoor amenities," says co-owner Heather Crider, president, The Rockstar Training Group.
Heather's husband and Legend Lodge co-owner, Mark Schulman, is a former touring drummer for worldclass artists, such as P!NK, Stevie Nicks, Cher, Foreigner, Billy Idol and Bobby Cadwell. So, Mark even lent a few of his authentic concert memorabilia to the cabin's décor.
The cabin is 1 hour southeast of Columbus, Ohio. Heather states, "The area's been featured on CBS Sunday morning and in publications as one of the Midwest's hidden gems. The state park and nature trails are gorgeous, including a waterfall, caves, a lake and hiking options."
The couple named their property Rockstar Royalty Retreats because they wanted to infuse a destination with a unique, rockstar-theme vibe while enabling guests to experience being immersed in both nature and luxury.
Legend Lodge is designed for couples, solo superstars or duos who deserve VIP treatment. Wake up with coffee on the relaxing, screened-in porch. Soak in a forest-view hot tub, detox in the all-wooden barrel sauna or take the signature guitar walkway to a private dome perfect for stargazing. Heather says some couples at the location create their own love story, complete with novel, photo-worthy moments. Some solo travelers seek clarity, calm or inspiration there. Yet others enjoy stays as bestie getaways or parent-children adventures, with the cabin sleeping up to four.
Inside the cabin is a fully stocked kitchen, custom spa shower/bathroom and modern, penthouse-like touches.
"Whether staying to recharge, reconnect, mark a milestone, remember who you are when nobody's watching or just rock out in nature, Legend Lodge is where you're not just guests, you're the headliners. It's a space to breathe, reset and come alive," promises Heather.
"Our goal is for people to truly connect back to their best selves, and to feel like rockstars of their own lives when they return home." RockstarRoyaltyRetreats.com

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.
He calls days later.
That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.
The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.
The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.
“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.
Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.
4
Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.
5
The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
