COSMETIC SURGERY

In 2024 PLASTIC SURGEON DENIZ SARHADDI, M.D., ADDRESSES TOP QUESTIONS

“2024 will be the year of looking natural and choosing interventions that make us feel more like ourselves. This means diligent skin care, tasteful injectables, small breast

Cosmetic surgery offers individuals the opportunity to improve their physical appearance, address specific concerns and boost confidence. Chesterfield-based plastic surgeon Deniz Sarhaddi, M.D., with St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery, says she believes when people look their best, they feel their best. She’s also an enthusiastic educator, committed to training St. Louis University senior plastic surgery residents in aesthetic surgery. enhancements, weight loss optimizing results from surgical interventions and facial rejuvenation surgery that maintains a natural, cohesive look.”

Deniz Sarhaddi, M.D.

Full-Face Rejuvenation is predicted to be the top trend of 2024. What does this procedure entail? "For a full facial rejuvenation, I recommend my patients start with the most basic part: skin care. An even, bright complexion alone can take years off of any face, and involves consistency with a few key products at home. A full facial rejuvenation can include nonsurgical and surgical interventions (usually a customized combination of the two) to correct signs of aging from the hairline down to the clavicles."

What two main elements should patients consider when deciding with you between surgical or nonsurgical approaches? "The goal and the degree of facial laxity are two of the most important things to consider. The best person to assess when a patient has graduated from nonsurgical maintenance to surgical intervention is a provider who is an expert in both."

What should patients expect at their first plastic surgery consultation? "My patients can expect to sit down with me for about an hour, to review their medical/surgical history and any nonsurgical interventions they have undergone (if it’s a face consult), to have a full exam in front of a mirror where I'll discuss with them what I see, and then we will take time to review options to address their concerns, and I will answer any questions."

How will you use artificial intelligence and 3D imaging during the new year? "I routinely use 3D imaging for breast-related surgeries to 'try on' implants of different sizes and projections. This approach basically always matches up with the preoperative trial with bra sizers, and I find my patients are happy with their final implant size after surgery."

SMART SWEETS Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN January is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Q U I N OA B R E A K FA S T B A R S This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit...simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

22

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

• • • •

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins or raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

F R OZ E N P E A N U T B U T T E R B I T E S

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite. 1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning. CONTINUED >

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist. .

of glucose, which lowers blood sugar levels. Combined with a B12 dosage, it also helps stimulate and increase metabolism. Aside from weight loss, he says patients taking the medications also have seen a decreased risk of certain conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, joint pain and reduced blood pressure. Over the course of the program, most patients can expect to lose up to an average of 20% of body weight, he adds. "We also have vitamin-driven injectables for energy and healthy support of our livers and kidneys," explains Kevin, who indicates the future intention is to become a full wellness center with additional services, such as red-light therapy and anti-aging treatments. "Overall, our goal is to help people with their longevity and ability to enjoy it," he adds. He says their discrete location near physical therapy practice Boutique Physio provides a peaceful, upbeat and comforting ambiance. Kevin says their medications are secured from a pharmaceutical company that routinely secures FDA recertification. He says the process works by first getting in touch with him via text or a phone call, followed by an online registration. A physician then reviews the registration details with each patient to ensure it represents a comprehensive medical history and that there are no health-related contradictions. Once approved, Kevin talks to new patients to schedule an appointment.

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

While in-demand semaglutide is used with proper diet and exercise programs to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, it now increasingly also is being applied as a medication for longterm weight management. One local, health care team makes the medication conveniently accessible for those who qualify to receive it. Last summer, Kevin Teubner, along with two partners, opened a new clinic in University City at 7301 Tulane Ave. After qualifying, patients at New Horizon Wellness can receive an FDAapproved, custom-blended injectable prescription medication. Working under the oversight of physicians, patients receive corresponding doses of semaglutide or tirzepatide, which is sold under the brand names Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. Semaglutide is a modified molecule developed by Novo Nordisk, and approved for use in the United States in 2017. Medical experts indicate it's a peptide similar to the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1, modified with a side chain. It works as a protein made in the intestine and results in decreased blood sugars and appetite. A small change in the molecule allows the medication to last weeks in human bodies rather than minutes. How does semaglutide function? Kevin says it works with and through the brain, stomach, pancreas and liver by helping regulate appetite and cravings; delaying gastric emptying; releasing the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels are high; and reducing production

“Typical patients want to lose 15-20 pounds,” says Kevin Teubner, New Horizon Wellness co-owner.

He says they maintain office hours Mondays through Saturdays, and that he has medical assistants basically on-call 24/7. "After a health consultation, our patients start with a modest dose of medications once a week and then we proceed with a customized plan," Kevin says. He adds that the goal is to get to an optimal level of units per week for the maximum benefit. "But everyone's bodies are different. So we often stair-step it over a few weeks' time, all the while revisiting the personal plan made for each person." Kevin says some patients notice changes fairly quickly, but everyone should see noticeable results after the first few months of treatment. "It's key to drink a generous amount of water every day during treatment and stay away from artificial food ingredients. Other than that, most people's bodies get along really well with it, and our patients tell us they quickly feel more energy," he states.

Cost currently starts at approximately $400 per month, so about $100 per week. Kevin says they offer a '100/100 Win/Win' program through which their patients get $100 for referring a potential patient who converts to a new patient. Associated new patients also get $100 credit. Each existing patient can receive credit for two referrals, or $200, each month. So, in essence, half of one's medication cost can be covered through referrals. During the first quarter of 2024, Kevin says they expect to have a new offensive peptide to work with as well. "We have many patients who eventually are able to come off of other medications, mainly due to the weight loss aspect. We really enjoy going on these weight loss journeys with everyone. We can serve as a sort of accountability partners and health advisers, but equally important, as supportive wellness cheerleaders." 314.596.5518 NHW.Health

The Kaufman Fund Has Been Honoring And Giving Back For 33 Years

BOLSTERING MENTAL, Physical Health Of Veterans

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

40

G IV IN G BAC K | LO CAL SE RVICE S

“My passion is to help veterans and their families,” says Wayne Kaufman. “It’s really simple. I just like helping people.” Wayne, vice president of sales with Dalco Home Remodeling, has been in the home improvement industry since 1971 but what drives his emotional core is something else that goes farther back than that. In 1990, he founded The Kaufman Fund in memory of his late brother, Ralph, a U.S. Air Force veteran and St. Louis area philanthropist. As a decorated Vietnam veteran, Wayne also served with distinction during 1968-1971 in the U.S. Army, earning the Bronze Star and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. "Ralph served on many charity committees and boards. He was well liked and very generous, especially for children-related causes, like The Asthma and Allergy Foundation," recalls Wayne. "He'd be teary-eyed and overwhelmingly proud of what the Kaufman Fund has become and how many veterans the organization assists." The Kaufman Fund Helping Veterans, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, supports St. Louis area veterans with life's basic necessities through food, shelter, clothing and medical care. "When I started the Fund with just friends and family involvement, I told them this type of nonprofit would explode with activity and needs, and it sure did! We've been blessed with so many supporters, sponsors and individuals through the years," Wayne declares. With Wayne's presidential leadership over the past 33 years, supporters of The Kaufman Fund created nine programs to help veterans in need (these programs are free to veterans and their families): • Legal Referral Program • Dental Referral Program • Mental Health Collaborative (access to assistance) • Chiropractic Referral Program • Food For Vets • Artist First for Veterans • Tax Preparation • Trees For Vets (more than 350 Christmas trees provided each year) • Winter Warm-Up (give away new coats to veterans dealing with housing insecurity).

Additionally, through the group partnering with other nonprofits in specific services, veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder receive equine and dog assisted therapy. Disabled veterans receive therapy through sports activities, too. "We hold six Food for Vets events each year, and have provided food for more than 2,300 veterans and their families," shares Wayne. To assist with a future Kaufman Fund food drive or to place a veteran on a recipient list, which starts 30 days prior to each drive, phone Ricky Elcan, retired master sergeant, at 314.200.5520. Wayne says approximately 200 veterans participate in their dental system. "We even have the VA sending us veterans because the VA program doesn't supply dental care to veterans unless they are 100% disabled." Anyone who would like to sponsor Trees For Vets should contact either Howard Berliner at howard@thekaufmanfund.org or 314.703.6306 or Al Finkelstein at al@thekaufmanfund.org or 314.497.8654. Tax return assistance is available to veterans during the tax season on a complimentary basis. Tax Prep for Vets can prepare both federal and state taxes. Veterans are asked to provide all personal records needed to process a return, including W2 forms, 1099 forms, business records, proof of residence for dependents being claimed, childcare information, along with social security numbers and date of birth for all individuals being claimed. However, Wayne says The Kaufman Fund may not be able to do all returns requested due to complexity or IRS due diligence requirements. "Tax Prep for Vets is done in partnership with local tax preparers and tax attorneys" he explains. To schedule a tax appointment for local veterans during tax season, call 314.530.9182 or email TKFTaxPrep@gmail.com. Wayne adds that they receive at least 100 calls per month for legal assistance. According to mental health research, art can help relieve depression and anxiety as well as improve reality orientation. It also is a pathway that can assist in recovering from brain injuries. The Kaufman Fund partners with Artists First to provide an expressive CONTINUED >

art program for veterans on Monday evenings from 3-7 p.m. at the Artists First studios located at 7190 Manchester Road in Maplewood. Artists First for Veterans is a drop-in, nontraditional creative support program for current and former military members to develop positive self-identity, self-expression, spirituality, self-esteem and community re-integration. Wayne says no prior art experience is necessary. In addition to Wayne, the fund's board of directors include Steve Rosenblum (served in U.S. Army Reserves) as vice president; Jim Marcellino (served in the U.S. Navy 1985-1989 and Reserves 1989-1998 with his final rank of chief petty officer) as treasurer; Matt Nyberg as secretary; and Shelia Schneider as executive director, spouse of a retired U.S. Air Force sergeant. Wayne says until last year, the group was completely based on volunteers. Due to the vast coverage of their programs, Shelia was employed during 2023. The nonprofit has an impressive advisory board as well: Tom Ackerman, sports director KMOX radio; Matthew Andrews, LIUNA Local 42 Veterans Committee president; Stephanie Bahn-Poteet, M1 Bank Marketing & Community Outreach; Jeanette Bax-Kurtz, CPA and founder of Andern Consulting LLC; Hon. Douglas R. Beach, (USMC Ret.); Steve Behrends, owner, Video Solutions; Howard Berliner, retired Shoe executive; Dennis Cooper, senior vice president, The Federal Savings Bank; Joel Eisenstein, attorney, Vietnam veteran, USMC; Alan Epstein, The Outsource CMO; Al Finkelstein, retired human resource executive; Arnold Jacobson, D.M.D., general dentistry; Cindy Oberkirsch,

director, Guest Care Panera Bread; Andy Rimmel, attorney, Pomerantz Sherman, LLC; Irl Scissors, principal, Gateway Government Relations; Frader Smith, veteran advocate, Past Commander American Legion Post #397; Howard Van Booven, president CP Charities; Ken Weintraub, retired senior development officer, St. Louis Jewish Federation; Anthony Wallace, owner, DeepStacks Poker League; and Yvonne Wesa, health, life and Medicare insurance agent. The Kaufman Fund group provides grants to 30-plus other nonprofit organizations, such as Heroes Care Inc., AMVETS Riders Chapter MO1, Blue Star Families Inc., Folds Of Honor Foundation, Dogs For Our Brave Inc., Focus Marines Foundation and Jefferson Barracks POW/MIA Museum, Inc. Debby Keathley, Kaufman Fund volunteer who works on events such as the golf tournaments and the annual Kaufman Fund Casino Night, says she loves that 100% of all event proceeds stay in and around St. Louis. "We've assisted thousands and thousands of veterans, and Our No. 1 goal is for more people to know about the Fund because that means we can help even more of them," states Wayne. 314.202.2164 TheKaufmanFund.org

The Kaufman Fund 501(c)3 group has assisted St. Louis metropolitan military veterans since 1990 with legal issues, tax preparation and access to mental, dental and chiropractic care. The group operates ‘Food for Vets’ several times annually, provides Christmas trees to veterans and offers an expressive art program to enhance self-esteem.

It’s Annual Health

Checkup Time

Advice Editorial: How To Make Sure Physical Bases Are Covered ARTICLE BY DR. BETH TEMPLIN, HOUSEFIT PHYSICAL THERAPY & FITNESS

D R .

B E T H

T E M P L I N ,

PT, DPT, GCS

Every year, most people see their physician for an annual checkup; doctors monitor and manage patients' medical health: blood pressure, weight, medical issues and medications. When patients have an annual checkup with a physical therapist, we focus on physical health: balance, strength, endurance, flexibility, posture and ability to move and do the things they love. Managing both of these health care areas is key to staying healthy and active. Similar to a physician's checkup, a physical therapy checkup identifies issues early, so they can be addressed right away. A physical therapy checkup is recommended for people who're having trouble doing things they enjoy doing: playing with grandchildren, gardening, golfing or traveling. Also, for those having trouble doing things they need to do: getting mail, taking out trash, going up/down stairs, doing laundry or grocery shopping. Checkups are especially for those who aren’t as steady on their feet anymore, and are nervous about having a fall. If we uncover major issues during checkups, we may recommend physical therapy. If only minor issues are identified, then we can help patients update their fitness routines. Dr. Beth Templin, PT, DPT, GCS, is a leading geriatric physical therapist in St. Louis. 314.939.1377 HouseFitSTL.com
