For many of us, this time of year can be exciting as it presents us with a chance to hit reset, make new plans and goals to pursue, and have hope for a brighter future. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from past years and the burden of expecting this year will be any different. In this issue, we don’t try to recommend quick fixes, but we present ideas for what is sustainable over the long haul. We want to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. With expert financial advice from people like Kristin Ward of Gemini Wealth Group (page 58) to helpful coaching from transformational consultant Monica Adams Quentin (page 20), we are hoping that 2023 is a year filled with peace, wellness and new dreams! Every step in the right direction counts. Because when it comes to most things in life, it’s not what you do some days that move the needle — it’s what you do MOST days. So don’t worry if you “slip up” or have to move your goals up slightly, if you’re moving in the right direction, that’s progress. It is 2023 and we are rooting for you! Be inspired to improve your health, plan a vacation, join a fitness community, enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try, and take on that new project. It’s not what you do some days — it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and healthy 2023. Here’s to you! We are rooting for you.

Monica Adams Quentin Find the way to happiness, no matter what it takes, is the sage advice of Monica Adams Quentin, Today In St. Louis anchor/reporter for KSDK Channel 5 and certified personal trainer. She adds, “Find a way to smile and laugh today. Let your laughter burst out. It’s the ‘music of the soul!’” Monica is indeed following her own recommendation, by side-stepping from her morning shift post at KSDK-TV as of Jan. 6, to work as a full-time, personal transformation consultant, including fitness, fashion and media-based facets. “It’s about balancing life within the power triangle of mental, spiritual and physical components. Everyone should know their value. Set your intentions each morning. Work toward your goals. And count gratitudes each night,” says this energetic enterpriser who decided the time was right to follow her heart by collaborating with others who also ‘walk her walk’ and ‘talk her talk.’ Cue up the ever-popular line from the 1956-1968 TV game show To Tell the Truth: Will the real Monica Adams stand up? Right on cue, the real Monica is always accessible. She says people frequently comment about how down-to-earth and authentic she is when they meet her or work with her. “It was ingrained in me during my childhood to be real and honest,” confirms this St. Louis native whose new URL reflects this same sentiment. “After so many years of getting up at 1:30 or 2 a.m., I’m looking forward to being part of things I was missing out on, starting with spending time with my husband and our three dogs,” Monica says. FA S H I O N STYLIST Her years of privately styling men, often while working with Bachrach Menswear or Bespoke Apparel in Clayton, now will be extended to women, too. She says she’s happy to help people identify what’s missing in their wardrobes or determine the proper colors to wear. Her premise for concierge styling and custom clothing partially stems from watching her mother meticulously work as a seamstress.

PERSONALIZED, BOUTIQUE FITNESS From being in the fitness industry for 20-plus years, Monica learned the art of honing goals. She attended the University of Missouri-Columbia to study exercise science and athletic training. However, at 19 years old, she says she was told she had a massive blood clot and had to be monitored for two years. “In that time, I turned even more to health and fitness. I’d always been an athlete, having played soccer, softball and basketball, and been in track and field.” She became an official personal trainer in 1999. Now, she says she’s planning customized retreats, while collaborating with owners of Le Champ de Fleurs, formerly known as Stone Soup Cottage, in Cottleville. This 33-acre farm is a respite for culinary health and wellness. “I’ve been leading a transformational journey group for the past two years, which has been private until now. I’ll work with a larger group in the future, including providing recipes and other inspiring factors. I’m also working with fitness facilities to provide semi-private or private fitness classes,” Monica reveals. She says she likes fitness classes with 15 participants or less, so she can have her eyes on everyone she’s affecting, and so no one feels lost or falls aside. “I love to see those aha moments in people’s faces when I adjust something they’re doing and they realize what it’s supposed to really feel like in their bodies,” she admits, adding that she’s already directing transformations at Force Performance in Brentwood and Mark Anthony’s in Kirkwood.

LI F E COAC H FOR PERSONAL JOURNEYS Monica says she likes to imagine how her last second on Earth would be spent. “That type of vision makes you think deeper about how you live life, and how others perceive you. Each day God gives us is holy and a precious gift from Him. We should enjoy it fully. Joy is powerful.” She says she especially likes teaching people how to journal for personal reflections.

M O T I VAT I O N A L SPEAKING Monica wants to talk with others about getting down to business, meeting goals and changing their lives, harkening to her fondness of her radio days. “You’ve got to speak your truth and do all the work to really achieve balance in life, which is so unbelievably short.” Post-pandemic, mental health has taken center stage, reflects Monica. “I’m glad mental health issues are out in the open. It’s given us a new lease on life to speak, feel and trust. We should definitely discuss life and inspire each other. Thinking about what we can even accomplish through podcasts and YouTube lights me up.” CONTINUED >

BY THE CENTER FOR SPECIALIZED SERVICES

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

REGIONAL NONPROFIT EMPOWERS THOSE LIVING WITH BRAIN DISORDERS AND OTHER INJURIES

M UST SE E | WEL L NESS

As a St. Louis nonprofit that helps people recover from brain injuries and other disabilities, The Center for Head Injury Services is anchored by an empathetic, committed team of broad-based professionals, board members, donors and family supporters who find creative solutions for their clients' needs. Based in Maryland Heights, the nearly 40-year-old nonprofit provides occupational therapy, vocational training, job coaching and other human resource services. The group also serves adults living with autism. Ron Glenn, the group's executive director, says the historical name of the organization was a bit of a misnomer, in that they work with anyone with a variety of disabilities. "We also assist those with disabilities related to eyesight or missing limbs, as well as gunshot victims and veterans. We don't turn anybody away," he assures. To that end, Ron indicates the nonprofit, just during December, was renamed and introduced publicly as The Center for Specialized Services.

This nonprofit was launched in 1986, primarily by parents joining with physicians to develop plans for taking care of adult children with disabilities, especially autism and other brain disorders. Ron states that the initiative grew organically into other programs, including training, employment and high school transition assistance. After clients graduate high school, the center's staff works with individuals on social and pre-vocational skills. He says the nonprofit's staffers help find jobs for several hundred individuals on average each year. Overall, the center's efforts help 750 people annually in the St. Louis metropolitan area, mainly St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County. Colleagues indicate Ron’s background of more than 15 years of experience in working with and supporting people with disabilities to live, work and participate in the communities, along with his most recent master of laws achievement, has been helping advance the mission of the organization. He adds, "The center has gone through a measure of changes. Although many were tough, all were necessary to improve our service delivery. As a servant to our mission, I find that my role is to bring stability and constancy. It's to work with staff and stakeholders alike for growth and to bring forth successful outcomes. The people we serve deserve it." Values embodied by the center's staff interweave a person-centered culture, quality, innovative services, authenticity, long-term win-win relationships, solutions, self-worth, measurable results and continuous improvement. "We approach each individual with 100% individuality. Most have been under IEPs

implemented by schools. However, parents tell us most IEPs are often cookie-cutter in nature, given what school staffs can do within limited resources. Our programs are developed based on needs," confirms Ron. He says the group's quality assurance is maintained through a caregiver coalition, upholding accreditation, frequent surveying of clients' parents and being audited every three years. Additionally, the center is a Better Business Bureau for Ethics torch winner, which honors organizations whose leaders demonstrate a high level of personal character, ensure that the organization's practices meet the highest standards of ethics, and consequently generate trust with its customers and the community. Current Center for Specialized Services includes: • Adult Day (SELF) Program • Midwest Adult Autism Project • Therapy and Counseling Services • Adaptive Equipment Services • Training and Transition • Career Development Services • Employment Support Services • Community Support Services Adaptive equipment services, such as vehicular modifications, can be requested through the center. The evaluations are free of charge to clients, and any potential equipment is ordered by occupational or physical therapists. CONTINUED >

Kasey Kaiser, the center's director of development, says they also have a counseling program. Employment support from the center's team helps clients get ready for jobs. Job developers operate within a community network to find those interested in employing clients. They also train clients and work on the job with clients to reach agreedupon benchmarks. Individualized plans come from each job coach. The center's staffers host Job Club on Thursday's in-person or by Zoom, including experts who present details on relevant steps such as how to write cover letters. Attendees can use the computer lab as well. The center owns and operates two social enterprises to provide training and employment opportunities for people with brain injuries, autism and other disabilities. A social enterprise is a business formed with socially conscious guiding principles. For the center, that means programs designed to train, employ and advance the lives of people with disabilities and create self-sustaining and viable businesses that will serve the community in many different ways. All of the products from the center’s social enterprises are handmade, packaged and sold by an

28

integrated workforce. In addition to training and jobs, 100 percent of the proceeds of the businesses go to support the Center’s mission. 1. Destination Desserts is a bakery and catering service that produces gourmet cookies, cupcakes and other desserts. Equipped with a food truck, Destination Desserts travels the metro area to businesses, parks and events. 2. Wags in a Bag is a dog treat bakery that produces all-natural dog biscuits and specialty frosted treats. Wags in a Bag is a regular vendor at fairs and other events where furry friends are welcome and sell its treats directly and through specialty pet shops. One of the important needs for this group remains fiscal support to sustain their programs and directly support the salaries of professionals helping the center's clients. Fundraisers for 2023 include a Rock 'N Roll Bingo at Maryland Heights Community Center on April 21, and the 17th annual Gray Matters Golf Tournament at Old Hickory Country Club on Sept. 28. 314.983.9230 HeadInjuryCtr-STL.org

NEW YEAR’S INSPIRED Procedures That Help Complete People’s Fresh Goals Of Self Care And Wellness ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Tosha Dove-Freund, owner and nurse practitioner, RN, MSN, NP, founded the medspa in 2014. With internationally known injection specialists and board-certified plastic surgeons, Tosha developed techniques and skills for a variety of skincare, laser and injectable treatments. She says they currently rank in the top 3% of medical spas in the nation with Allergan, the creators of Botox Cosmetic; she’s even a certified national trainer for Allergan. In addition to injectable services, she recommends facial or laser services and other skin treatments regarding rejuvenation or hair removal.

Finding a self-reflection technique that works for long-term mental health is key to this practice. Get creative and let go of judgments, remembering that these recorded thoughts are ‘for your eyes only.’ Develop a writing routine, such as jotting down daily goals or observations right after awaking. Most people use journaling to relieve stress, brainstorm problem-solving, or to document gratitudes. For writing prompts, there are various online resources. Buy a special diary or make a journal.

Board-certified surgeons who are body contouring experts at Sono Bello St. Louis use innovative techniques for life-changing results. They even have a TriSculpt micro-laser lipo treatment, which enables a one-visit, permanent fat removal appointment that works for removing fat on arms, chins, backs, legs and stomachs. Their services are far-ranging, including the reduction of cellulite on male chests, mommy makeovers and tummy tuck alternatives. Body cosmetic procedures at Sono Bello combine science and art.

HouseFit team members offer beneficial advice and physical support about issues such as maintaining overall balance, curbing arthritis pain and dealing with vertigo. Additionally, they provide specialty Parkinson's treatments and workshops about preparing for falls. She says many people think of physical therapy for after surgery, knee replacements or illness, and they don't realize that her team can focus proactively on prevention and wellness, in essence slowing down the effects of typical aging. Welcome to Michaela’s Kitchen THIS BOOZY GRASSHOPPER COCKTAIL IS A VINTAGE AFTERDINNER ICE CREAM DRINK THAT IS ALWAYS IN STYLE

Delight guests with this vintage, boozy Grasshopper ice cream adults-only cocktail. It is a dessert in a glass, with Crème de Menthe and Crème de Cacao blended with vanilla ice cream and served with whipped cream. This Grasshopper cocktail is a classic after-dinner adult beverage. Originally invented in New Orleans, where so many great cocktails were invented, it possesses Southern charm. The Crème de Menthe and Crème de Cacao give this cocktail a chocolate peppermint patty richness, making it easy while sipping this sweet sensation, to forget alcohol is involved. For cooking, entertaining and all things from the heart, visit Michaela Kenkel at AnAffairFromTheHeart.com.

Michaela Kenkel of AnAffairFromTheHeart.com: Michaela believes memories are made in the heart of the home: the kitchen. “Whoever is here, or whoever may stop by, there’s always plenty; but nothing makes me happier than when EVERYONE is home, and I can look around my table and there is a ‘seat in every seat.’ Then my heart is full.”

TR AUM A DOESN’T DEFINE A PERSON EXPERT SAYS: ACCE P T W HAT IS W ITHIN CO NTROL A N D W H AT IS N OT

More and more people today are finding answers as to why their mental health is in a steady decline. There’s been much medical research done on the long-term effects of trauma. Many people are learning that their mental and emotional downward spiral is connected to their experienced trauma dating back to as early as their childhood. Experts claim that the increased number of adverse childhood experiences is associated with poor health, addiction, and incarceration, just to name a few contributing factors. Right now, you may be thinking about a traumatic situation that you’ve experienced and how it has played a role in your own emotional and mental development. Lifestyle spoke with Danya Artimisi, a licensed social worker who owns Soul One Wellness Counseling. “Do you have phobias? Do you consistently experience anxiety in a given situation? Do you find yourself feeling leery about new people with whom you cross paths? Perhaps you cannot hold onto friendships, relationships, or even jobs. What about irrational fears? These are just a few examples of how perceived trauma can manifest and become life-limiting and seemingly paralyzing,” she explains. “I am here to encourage you that your trauma does not ‘define’ you. It may feel consuming, especially right after the traumatic experience, but it does not encompass your essence. So many people live their lives blaming trauma for their hardships when they don’t realize that they, in fact, have the choice and the control to take back the reins on their lives.” Danya counsels that people have the power to stop negative self-talk and self-limiting fears. “The fact is, what happened in the past, well, it happened. That is something that we cannot control, but what we can control is how we choose to let our past become our identity. All it takes is for you to make the decision to accept that your trauma does not define you.” She says the best way to begin one's journey of healing is to know and accept what is within one's control and what is not. Here is her advice:

YOU CAN CONTROL: • • • • • •

Your boundaries Your thoughts and actions What you give your energy to The goals that you set How you speak to yourself How you handle challenges

“Once you can acknowledge and accept what is within your control and what is not, you can begin to take full charge of your life. You are no longer allowing yourself to be held prisoner by self-limiting thoughts and fears. Don’t make it a blame game. Don’t give precious energy to that which does not serve you and know that it is perfectly ok to evict negative energies from your life. It’s too heavy of a rucksack to carry uphill through quicksand,” she adds. Seeking help through mental health counseling is one of many great ways to navigate through this life-changing transition by having a professional to guide you. OH, GROW UP! Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors And Will Be One Of Greatest Allies To Aid Health

Humans always have had a penchant for propagation. Since King Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century B.C., artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls." Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall." Designers dubbed them “statement walls." But for purposes here, let's refer to them as the architects do -- as “vertical gardens.” A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade. The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well. Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality

by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood and reduce stress. Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well. As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast-growing, and are low maintenance. Add a little color to a wall with a lipstick plant, another climber named for its bright lipstick-shaped blooms. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden. CONTINUED >

Experienced Financial Advice Is Worthy Goal Gemini Wealth Group Helps Navigate Investing Stages ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS One or more of the New Year’s resolutions people usually make revolves around financial planning and reaching specific goals that involve financial resources, such as trips, new homes or cars. Lifestyle spoke with Kristin Ward, senior partner/LPL financial advisor of Gemini Wealth Group, about the major factors to consider when planning financial goals. “People are always asking ‘with this downturn in the economy, should I cash out of the market?’ The key is to stay invested,” she advises.

HERE ARE THE MAJOR TIPS SHE SHARED: 1. Don’t panic; stay the course and stay invested. 2. In developing long-term plans, each goal has its own time horizon, so invest accordingly, with the advice of a professional financial planner. 3. Speak often with an adviser; they are like a quarterback calling the plays as needed to reach the goals YOU have set. 4. As one ages, each person has different risk considerations, so always understand why you own what you own and whether that currently meets your needs. 5. Cashing out – historically means missing out. Investors who sell out of positions often miss out when the market rebounds. Missing out on 10 of the best up-days in the market can potentially reduce overall returns by 50%. “As a female-financial adviser, I have a special passion and expertise in working with women to help them navigate their financial needs and goals for themselves and their families. As a widow, I can personally empathize with women going through those difficult times and can, in most cases, ease their financial concerns," says Kristin. Gemini Wealth Group stays abreast of trends and new financial products; they also offer numerous free resources and educational materials on their website at TheGeminiWealthgroup.com. Kristin explains that Gemini Wealth Group uses a team approach to help clients, who have a wide variety of needs, maneuver through the complex investment universe. Their team, with 50 years of combined financial services industry experience, helps businesses, families and individuals navigate the various needs and stages of investing. “No one strategy fits everyone, which is why every client gets our constant attention—from planning to execution to follow-up. We take a proactive approach to help develop a strategy to address the financial goals you have set and really engage our clients in the process. We want to know what is most important about money to you and then, together, we find the best way to help you reach those goals,” she says. “We have the client—and only the client—in mind when we partner with them in their financial planning.”
