Summer Days Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips but are those that are slower paced with simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it’s so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of those times might be backyard barbecues, making s’mores by a fire pit, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. And as we have featured on page 20, you can enjoy the perfect "Farm to Table" experience at home with family and friends. As far as beating the heat, that’s no problem with all the fun water activities around the area. Check out the Local Experiences section of this issue for some great ideas. And if you’re planning to travel abroad we’ve highlighted the perfect vacation to Greece on page 26. Let’s also not forget to shine a light on local veterans in our community and thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life to protect others. Tomato Explosion Is July 1-31 To Help Feed At-Risk Families During the month of July, St. Louis area restaurants create or designate a special dish featuring tomatoes. Each time the dish is ordered during the month of July, a portion of the sale goes to Operation Food Search, a hunger relief organization founded in 1981 whose staffers use the funds to help feed children and families at risk of hunger. Ladue Garden Club's Flower Of The Month July's selection is Cone flower (Echinacea purpurea). The name derives from the ancient Greek word “echinos” meaning hedgehog. Coneflowers have prickly, spiny, bristly stems and leaves that deer and rabbits don't like. Coneflowers come in many bright colors. They're low maintenance, best in full sun, good cut or dried and long blooming. They also attract butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and pollinators. The coneflower was one of the first wildflowers to successfully move into mainstream horticulture.

Farm To Table Dinner OUTDOORS ENJOYING FRIENDS AND FAMILY OVER GOOD FOOD AND DRINKS IS A GREAT WAY TO USHER IN SUMMER

Spending time outdoors and enjoying friends and family over good food and drinks is a great way to usher in summer. From the fresh flower arrangements to the locally sourced produce and herbs, this earthy spread is brimming with character and flavor. The earthy ceramic and clay vases give the perfect vessel to fill with organic cut herbs and handpicked wild flowers which includes a medley of queen Anne’s lace, mint, sage, rosemary, lavender, lamb’s ear, nigella, buddleia, oregano, dill, feverfew and geranium to name just a few of these beautiful blooms.

We love a good home-cooked menu mixed with a signature drink. We start with an Arugula Salad with Grilled Corn, Shaved Radishes with Zucchini and Goat Cheese and served with a Creamy Lemon Vinaigrette. Buttermilk Brined Fried Chicken was a must for this outdoor party which pairs nicely with Roasted Heirloom Carrots drizzled with Hot Honey. Peach Bread Pudding with Salted Vanilla Caramel Cream round out for the perfect sweet treat.

BUTTERMILK BRINED FRIED CHICKEN DRIED SPICE MIX • • • • • • • • • • •

2 tablespoons white pepper 1 teaspoon ground mustard 5 teaspoons paprika 2 teaspoons fresh black pepper 2 tablespoons garlic powder 2 teaspoons dried oregano 2 teaspoons cayenne 1 teaspoon celery salt 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 4 teaspoons onion powder Palm kosher salt

BUTTERMILK BRINE • 4 cups buttermilk • 1 bunch fresh sage • 1/2 of spice mixture

DREDGE • 2 cups flour • 1/2 cup cornstarch • 1 tablespoon baking powder • Whole cut up chicken or 2 bone-in breasts, 2 thighs and 2 drumsticks • 4 cups shortening

TO COOK: Marinate chicken in brine for up to 24 hours. Place chicken in large Ziploc bag and pour marinade over top. Add fresh sage and store in fridge. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a baking rack with a sheet pan for raw chicken and one for cooked chicken. Add remaining spice mixture to flour mixture. Whisk together well. Heat shortening to 350 degrees. (Preference is cast iron Dutch oven) Pull chicken out of buttermilk mixture and let drip. Coat firmly in flour mixture and set on raw chicken rack. Complete each piece of chicken. Heat oil to 350 degrees. Place 2 or 3 pieces of chicken in oil and cook 3-5 minutes per side. Place on cooked chicken rack. Put cooked chicken in oven to complete cooking for 15 minutes. Let chicken rest for 5-10 minutes before serving!

PEACH BREAD PUDDING • 1 loaf brioche • 5 fresh peaches • 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 cups milk • 1 cup heavy cream • 5 eggs • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes. Dice peaches into medium dice. Place peaches, white sugar, and butter in saucepan. Cook until sugar is dissolved and peaches are soft. Mix all other ingredients together. Spray a 9x13-inch baking pan and add peach mixture with brioche pieces and then add milk mixture. Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes before cutting.

SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE • 1 cup granulated sugar • 6 tablespoons salted butter, room temperature and cut into 6 pieces • 1/2 cup heavy cream • 1 teaspoon salt Heat sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly with a spatula or wooden spoon. Sugar will form clumps and eventually melt into a thick brown, amber-colored liquid as you continue to stir. Be careful not to burn. Once sugar is completely melted, immediately add the butter. Be careful in this step because the caramel will bubble rapidly when the butter is added. Stir the butter into the caramel until it is completely melted, about 2 minutes. If you notice the butter separating, remove from heat and vigorously whisk to combine it again. Very slowly drizzle in 1/2 cup of heavy cream while stirring. Allow the mixture to boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of salt. Caramel thickens as it cools. Cover tightly and store for up to one month in the refrigerator.

EL AHUMADO BY CORDIAL CRAFT“SPANISH FOR SMOKY” • 1 1/2 ounces Reposado tequila • 1/2 ounce Aperol • 3/4 ounce lime juice • 1/2 ounce agave nectar • 1/4 ounces luxardo cherry syrup • 1 spritz of Mezcal Lightly sweet, pleasantly bitter. ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON Top destinations that garner the most requests for travel plans to Greece are often Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, says Marcie Boyle, owner of Travel Leaders Chesterfield. However, she confirms the more authentic Cycladic islands, such as Paros, Naxos, Milos, have grown in popularity. “We customize our clients' Greece-detailed itineraries based on their exact wish list," she adds.

CRETE IS MORE POPULAR THAN EVER Being a family-friendly island, Crete offers many soft sandy beaches with shallow waters, such as Elafonissi, where children love the pink sand. ZAKYNTHOS AND PELOPONNESE ARE UP-AND-COMERS For starters, Zakynthos is home to the worldwide famous Navagio (shipwreck) beach, making it one of the most popular Greek islands. Marcie says it has breathtaking landscapes, exotic beaches with sugar-fine sand, turquoise waters and enriched nightlife. Escape to the Peloponnese, where myths meet history through monuments, archeological sites, ancient Olympia, temples, Byzantine churches and monasteries. Located on the southern side of the country, the Peloponnese is the most popular region of the Greek mainland. It's a peninsula that is geographically shaped like a plane tree leaf. Marcie says the area also

has seaside locations, gorgeous beaches, castles and ski centers. Greece is famous for its ancient philosophers, such as Plato, Pythagoras, Socrates and Aristotle. It's known as the birthplace of democracy in the West, too, and they invented the Olympic Games and theater. Visitors need not speak the Greek language, except perhaps for their own joy. Let's go! Rap Artist | Song Writer | Music Producer Daemon Murray has been 'Turning The World Around' since last year through this and 14 other singles. And now, that edge of mystery continues with fresh singles for his new, mixed collection, "I'm From The Future," along with his new video, which was filmed in St. Louis. He describes his music style as running the gamut, with rhythmic changes that come very naturally but with twists that create a different sound and vibe. "Many of my songs are like going on a rollercoaster." Slated to be released during July, the video was produced by an all-women crew within a St. Ann studio. Daemon says he believes in self-determination and motivating youth to be the best people they can be. "St. Louis has a tendency to be a place of big extremes. Even with weather, it can be

raining hard, but you look two blocks away and it's all blue sky. I get inspired by the many local juxtapositions, and I think you can hear that in my music through the dynamic shifts my songs often take," says Daemon. "It's the 'make do, can do with what you have' attitude coming through." This St. Louis native lived in California for a while and cofounded Breakfast Music Group, an artist-owned record label, music publisher and creative services company based in Los Angeles. He moved back to St. Louis during 2015. "St. Louis is where I got my bones," he quips, sharing that he used to freestyle outside of Hi-Pointe Cafe off McCausland Avenue when he was too young to get in. "I don't sound like anyone else right now. I express my viewpoints and write about being a human who's feeling all this stuff, but doing the best I can," he says. "Sometimes I weave heartfelt stories, like on the single 'Letter to My Best Friend,' a track that turned isolation into inspiration. Other times, I use speed, agility and hard-hitting beats." The new album is scheduled to have 16 tracks, with 12 full songs and three interludes. Daemon says his father was diagnosed with cancer while he was writing one of the songs, and he collaborated to turn it into a keyboard ballad that communicates his sadness. The new video was directed by St. Louis photographer and music video director Will Reasoner. Daemon says they applied a stripped down, creative approach with a black and white theme. When Daemon raps, “Can’t be stopped, better get out the way,” that line from his “Turn the World Around” single punctuates the song’s neck-snapping breakbeats, skillful soul samples and razor-sharp flow. It’s featured in the XBox exclusive Forza Horizon 5, and also in ads for the game. Since 2016, Daemon says he's been creating songs for TV and film, as well as promotional usage. His work has been featured on Netflix (“Inventing Anna,” “Daybreak” and “Work It”), FOX (“Ghosted”), Starz (“Power”), ads for Mini Cooper and Sephora, and TBS (on the Jordan Peele produced “The Last O.G.”). He also writes, produces and performs music for Third Side Music Publishing. "While some of my music has been about meeting clients' needs, this new collection is about getting back to the pure joy of creating and performing, and telling less-told stories that you can tell as an artist," says ambitious and self-driven Daemon, who admits these days he spends 4-10 hours a day writing music and lyrics, along with spending 14-20 hours in a recording studio. After debuting the new video and single, Daemon says he hopes to hear it on the radio, to keep taping music this summer and then to go on tour. The video will be available on his YouTube channel. Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is an “outdoor paradise” located in Lampe, Missouri, close to Branson. This one-of-a-kind experience highlights the exceptional beauty of the Ozarks, with 10,000 acres of pristine Ozark Mountain landscape, crystal-clear trout streams, dozens of cascading waterfalls, ancient burial caves, unique handbuilt bridges, wildlife and bottomless, blue-green pools. The Park includes a fully-functioning mill, restaurant, conservation center and a treehouse built by Animal Planet's Treehouse Masters. Aside from a few amenities to make Dogwood Canyon Nature Park more accessible to guests, the rugged landscape has been left untouched. With just a little imagination, one can travel back to a time when European settlers first entered the area or, even further, to explore the mark that Native Americans left on these Missouri hills and hollows. Enjoy the 6.4-mile roundtrip tour by walking or biking on mostly level pathways, or even by Segway. If walking, plan on about 3 hours with plenty of stopping to take photos. There are great spots along the way to eat a picnic lunch. For those who aren't up to a big walk, there is a 2-hour tram tour that allow guests to ride over bridges and low-water crossings. paradise is on horseback. No matter what skill level, this horseback riding experiences allows visitors to explore the Ozarks through the eyes of early settlers, discovering areas of the park not seen by the tram or from walking and biking trails. One can enjoy a 1-hour ride (for all-level riders) or a 2.5-hour ride that is for more experienced riders and includes a break for lunch. Before setting out, guests can visit the new Little Indian Stables with 24 stalls where they can meet the horses. Experienced wranglers guide guests on a leisurely ride, exploring ridges, hollows, old logging roads and other scenic views. All participants must be at least 8 years old and 48 inches tall, weigh no more

than 250 pounds and be able to ride on their own (one rider per horse). For the more adventurous, there’s the Cattle Drive, the “ultimate cowboy experience.” Riders gather and herd colorful Texas longhorns and eat a hearty meal following the round up at the chuckwagon site. There’s also a 5- to 6-hour advanced horseback ride through emerald pastures, wooded areas and Little Indian Creek with lunch provided. The mission of Dogwood Canyon, and its owner Johnny Morris—founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops—is about conservation and education, as well as working hard to protect the land and wildlife. Operated by Dogwood Canyon Foundation, visitors enjoy a carefully maintained landscape, while learning

about conservation and interacting with nature up close. When Johnny purchased the property in 1990, he says he wanted to create a nature park where he could bring back some buffalo and elk that were native to the area and also have a place for people to fish and hike. It underwent a major cleanup after the Flood of 2017. The reconstruction of the park took a total of five months, 130 laborers, hundreds of dump trucks worth of soil and 10,000 pounds of trout. It reopened on Sept. 30, 2017. Today, 30 years later, it remains a magical place where thousands of visitors to the Branson area can experience the beauty and history of the Ozarks. Just Chillin’ MY FAVORITE LOCAL FROZEN TREATS Hot summer days have arrived, and I’m excited to share my favorite local spots to hit when it’s time to cool down. From ice cream to popsicles and cocktails on the rocks, there are plenty of places in St. Louis to find some shade and enjoy a cold treat.

Hangar’s Strawberry Basil Mojito: The Hangar in Rock Hill is a great spot to enjoy a patio drink. They have a lot on their menu for snacking but their cocktails are simply divine.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream: located in the heart of Central West End, Jeni’s is known nationally, but I still consider it one of my local go-to favorites. Try the Brambleberry Crisp.

Clementine’s: simply the best in town, Clementine’s always has a unique new flavor, or your good old favorites. I never skip the hot fudge, either.

Poptimism: the cutest popsicle truck now has a location at the City Foundry, and all of their unique creations are so fun to try.

Boardwalk Waffles: now serving up their own homemade ice cream flavors, Boardwalk is a Maplewood icon sure to leave your sweet tooth happy.
