Cruising Down The Missouri River In Style MISS AUGUSTA MOVES TO PERMANENT HOME AT KLONDIKE ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS

Miss Augusta will be moved to her permanent home at Klondike Park Boat Ramp in Augusta this spring, where she’ll be cruising down the Missouri River on public and private tours. The 105-foot-long Skipperliner is the 10th yacht the Hoffmann Family of Companies has introduced to the public in the last four years. It offers the perfect setting for daily public cruises, private charters, weddings, parties and corporate events, with capacity for 149 passengers on its three decks. Guests can enjoy one of the enclosed climate-controlled salons, each with a full-service bar, or bask in the sun from the third level sundeck. “It brings a whole new way to see and experience Missouri wine country. We can’t wait to start cruising the river and offering our wines on board,” says David Hoffmann, founder of Hoffmann Family

of Companies. He and his wife, Jerri, are natives of Washington, Missouri. Miss Augusta is just one aspect of the Hoffmann Family’s $125 million transformation and expansion of the Augusta Wine Country. The company has purchased, or will develop, four wineries, five vineyards, two hotels, a championship golf course, horse and carriage rides, and a classic car museum, along with revitalizing more than a dozen buildings in the downtown Augusta area. In addition, the company has purchased the Emmaus Home Complex in Marthasville and will transform it into Martha’s Vineyard and Winery, including a 5-star hotel and spa, vineyards and event space. Whatever the Hoffmans do, it’s always first-class. And Miss Augusta is no different. The yacht offers a unique experience CONTINUED >

ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS

Imagine a place where those with physical or mental limitations can participate in an amusement park catered exactly for their needs, to create wonderful memories together with family and friends. This is the vision and mission of Jamie Vann, 46, president and founder of Spirit of Discovery Park. And she plans to develop it right here in the St. Louis area. She describes her vision: “Spirit of Discovery Park (SoDP) is a model of diversity, equality and inclusion; bringing together an extremely marginalized population of diseased and disabled to partner with the healthy and able-bodied for fun and adventure.” This unique, 60-acre theme park is designed for people with physical, mental and intellectual disabilities as well as veterans… to ensure EVERY body has a place where they can feel the wind on their face, laugh and create wonderful memories. It also will serve as a resource for life-skills training, as well as employment opportunities. “Yes, it’s a big vision,” she adds, “but one that can positively impact our region and millions of people across the country who need a place just like this.” Spirit of Discovery Park will include rides, attractions, a greenhouse, arcade, amphitheater, sensory areas, playgrounds, splash pads and sand activities with access designed for everyone to enjoy, regardless of ability. The admissions policy will be such that any person of disability will be admitted FREE of charge and families will visit, nationally and internationally, without the fear of a loved one being left out of the fun. And locating it in the center of the country will allow easier travel, allowing perhaps a car ride versus a flight, she explains. The vision for Spirit of Discovery Park came about six years ago, Jamie says, when she was made aware of an injustice. She set forth to make it right--not realizing at the time, it would reveal itself as a calling. Jamie saw this injustice CONTINUED >

“The Park will provide life-skills training with hundreds of jobs, classes, events and unique experiences that many with disabilities have never had the opportunity to enjoy.” —JAMIE VANN Jamie Vann, president/founder

as a challenge, and as she does with most challenges, she accepted it. The challenge was sparked by a typical playdate with a fellow mom of three, who expressed that she wouldn’t be taking her family to Disney World because her middle daughter, born with Down syndrome and Celiac disease (which is a fairly common combination), was unable to fully partake in the experiences at the Disney properties. Jamie was dumbfounded, then infuriated, and sad. She always had truly admired Walt Disney and so enjoyed Disney World… and actually dreamed of being a part of it someday. As she became more aware of its limitations for those with certain disabilities, dietary restrictions, etc., her passion for Disney and her mission to bring those kinds of experiences to ALL would present itself as an all-out challenge. “Many of us have fond memories of visiting theme parks as children, but not everyone can be so lucky,” says Jamie. “There are children and parents across our world

26

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | E NTE RTAI NME NT

that have challenges that prevent them from enjoying theme parks in the same ways others do. We want to fill that void.” SoDP began its fundraising efforts six year ago. Jamie says local and national business sponsorships and donors will provide the operational support and maintenance costs, making this park a reality in the very near future. “We have a multitude of different sponsorship opportunities both in and around the park. Every ride, attraction and venue can be utilized to promote our partnerships while showing support for our project. “The Park will provide life-skills training with hundreds of jobs, classes, events and unique experiences that many with disabilities have never had the opportunity to enjoy.” For example, inspired by Disney Epcot’s ride Living with the Land, the Greenhouse at SoDP will provide an experience where guests interact with the Aeroponic Vertical Gardens throughout

the Park, giving a glimpse of the future of technology and agriculture, and will provide a safe, stress-free, working environment for those with disabilities, and veterans as they transition back into civilian life. The Greenhouse will bring Agritourism to the Midwest, producing dozens of benefits for the community, and making this greenhouse/vertical garden with its 1,500 aeroponic growing systems (towers) the largest in the world! Their consultant on the project is actually a former employee at Epcot’s Living with the Land. “Through prayer and with a solid team, Spirit of Discovery Park is becoming a reality,” says Jamie. “From the mouth of Walt Disney, ‘all our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.’ Thank you, in advance, for your support that allows us the courage to continue this dream for EVERY body.” To view SoDP’s upcoming fundraising events and/or to donate: SpiritOfDiscoveryPark.com.

Nestled in the heart of Clayton is the city's oldest residence: Hanley House at 7600 Westmoreland Ave. This Greek Revival-style farmhouse was built in 1855, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Prior to a COVID-19 pandemic temporary closure of the house, public tours were available. Nancy Caroline Hanley was the oldest surviving Hanley daughter. She remained in the Hanley House until her death in 1938 at age 97. Clayton officials purchased Hanley House and roughly one acre of land in 1968 from Barbara Yore, a granddaughter of Martin and Cyrene Hanley. The City of Clayton was formally incorporated in February 1913, named after Ralph Clayton, who settled in the area in the 1830s and donated land for establishing the courthouse. On Dec. 4, 1877, St. Louis County residents voted to adopt Clayton's and Hanley's land as the new County seat. The first schoolhouse of Clayton was established in the early 1880s. The architecture of central Clayton is said to reflect the city's economic activity and eras of growth, with mid-century Modernist low- and high-rise structures contrasting with earlier mansions, stores and flats. Research for this feature by Missouri Historical Society Library & Research Center library and archive specialists indicate the oldest subdivisions in Clayton that are described on the National Register are: WydownForsyth district, which includes the Chancellor's House, 6500 Forsyth Blvd., built in 1909; several homes built in 1912, including 5441 and 6457 Cecil Ave.; 6444 and 6464 Ellenwood Ave.; 6440 Forsyth Blvd.; Brentmoor Park, which includes at least one house built in 1911; and the Haarstick-Whittemoure Houses from 1912.

Visit Music City

Getaway to Nashville

and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’

Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, and Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery, which carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Plus, Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. Last but not least is the music scene. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe.
