celebrate another year with you! Before everything gets crazy and we start shopping for all of the people on our gift list, we want to take this time to pause and reflect. This year has been a journey with all of you, and we are grateful that we get to create this magazine every month and connect with you and your family. Thank you for sharing your stories and for reading ours. Thank you for supporting the local businesses in our community, as without them, this magazine wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for the community service you do and for every time you recycle something or play a small part in keeping our city clean and thriving. We are so proud of where we live, and we know it wouldn’t be the same without each and every one of you. In this issue, we offer you the opportunity to reflect with us and spend some time being grateful for the people we have around us. Sure, planning a Thanksgiving dinner and traveling to see family can be stressful, and don’t worry, we’re here to help with some of the details. But don’t forget to look at each person around your table and remember how they have made a difference in your life. We wouldn’t be here without each other. NOV. 19 IS AN IMPORTANT DAY FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH HEARING LOSS. On that day, representatives of Travelers Protection Association Hearing Trust again will serve as a national hub showcasing support for people who seek assistance in obtaining mechanical devices, medical treatment, specialized education, speech classes, note takers and interpreters directly related to deafness or hearing loss. Additionally, St. Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer will proclaim Nov. 19 as TPA Hearing Trust Day. Roughly 20% of Americans, or 48 million, experience some degree of hearing challenges, according to Hearing Loss Association of America sources. Since 1975, TPA members have served as a voluntary association whose supporters focus on travel safety issues, child safety programs and community service projects. It’s the only fraternal benefit society domiciled in Missouri. During the group’s 45 years, they’ve assisted 5,900-plus individuals by awarding more than $2.2 million in financial aid. 12

“It was great seeing our residents eating, drinking and talking together, and having a good time, even with social distancing.” Programming has resumed, with necessary precautions, which include free, on-site COVID-19 testing for team members and residents, as needed. “Some of our activities have been coming back, and we have strict guidelines with 10 people for an activity,” she says. “Everyone has to wear a mask and social distance. We try to find normalcy in the things we do. For example, during Assisted Living Week a couple of weeks ago, the residents made some amazing soaps and lip balm for our team members in appreciation for all they do.” Residents start the morning with exercise geared for their abilities, including yoga and stretching. Some of the activities include cognitive stimulation therapy, trivia, entertainment in the courtyard, and Happy Hour before dinner. Residents are able to experience anytime dining between 7 a.m and 7 p.m.

Being Thankful for Your Health THE IMPORTANCE OF CANCER SCREENINGS AND EARLY DETECTION ARTICLE KARA SAVIO
CANCER IS A MAJOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM WORLDWIDE AND REMAINS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE UNITED STATES. The promising news is that in the last decade, cancer death rates have steadily decreased due to the introduction of better screening techniques. Dr. Mudresh Mehta, an oncologist and hematologist with SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancers, as well as hematological (blood) conditions. After graduating from Mercer University School of Medicine, he completed his residency and fellowship at Saint Louis University. He was happy to share some of his insight regarding staying ahead of cancer.
22
Clayton Lifestyle | November 2020
Ultimately, it was the long-term relationships I get to build with my patients as an oncologist that drew me into this field. YOU MUST BE THANKFUL THAT YOUR PATIENTS ARE ABLE TO RECEIVE ALL THE SCREENINGS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON THE ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL CAMPUS. Yes, it’s great that we offer screenings here. In addition, November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and SSM Health offers a very helpful health risk assessment online to pre-screen for lung cancer. Our rule of thumb is that if you are ages 55-77 and are either a current smoker or have quit smoking in the last 15 years, testing should be considered. If you fit into the category of someone who should undergo screening, please talk with your primary care provider about the risks and benefits of screening. They will ask some additional questions to see if you qualify for screening. TELL US WHY YOU CHOSE TO MAKE ST. LOUIS YOUR HOME AND WHERE YOU PRACTICE. I loved the fact that during my residency at Saint Louis University, I met people from all walks of life. I also met my wife who is from St. Louis Dr. Mudresh Mehta, Oncologist/Hematologist
and decided it’s a great place to practice and a great place to live. WHAT ABOUT YOUR JOB GIVES YOU THE MOST SATISFACTION? Patients who have cancer can develop a very close relationship
YOU BELIEVE THAT EARLY DETECTION IS CRITICAL? Screenings are extremely important and the best way to prevent or catch cancer early. It’s very important to talk to your primary care
with their oncologist. You get to know your patients and their families for a long time and really form a bond -- knowing that I might play a role in their recovery is the most rewarding part of my job.

JINGLE JANGLE: A CHRISTMAS JOURNEY – RATED PG – HITTING NETFLIX ON NOV. 13, 2020 This musical adventure, written and directed by David Talbert, is destined to become a holiday classic, as we follow legendary toymaker Jeronicus Jangle (played by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker), on his journey to reawaken the magic of the season, through his magical toys. But when his apprentice (played by Keegan-Michael Key) steals his most fabulous creation, it’s up to his granddaughter Journey (played by Madalen Mills) to save the day. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey also features the acting talents of Sharon Rose, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Kieron Dyer, Justin Cornwell, Lisa Davina Phillip, Hugh Bonneville, and original music by Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe and Academy Award Winner, John Legend.
THE BIG SICK – RATED R – 2 HRS. – HITTING AMAZON PRIME NOV. 24, 2020 This Amazon original comedy is based on the real-life romance between comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife and writer, Emily Gordon. When the Pakistani born Nanjiani (who plays himself in this film) falls in love with grad student Emily Gardner (Zoe Kazan), they find out rather quickly their two cultures are about to clash. But when Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail must face her rather abrasive parents, Beth (Holly Hunter) and Terry (Ray Romano) as Emily struggles to survive, and he’s forced to come to terms with his feelings for her, too, despite his family’s dismissal of their relationship. The Big Sick also stars Bo Burnham, David Alan Grier, Anapam Kher and Zenobia Shroff.

Good, resting sleep provides proven health benefits to children, their caretakers and siblings, alike. These beds offer internal lighting in white, blue, pink, yellow, green or no color.
03
They come with air filters that pump in fresh air and pump out allergens and pathogens. Therefore, the temperature of the external bed can be filtered inside as well.

zPods are a wonderful place to dream, play or sleep. They can accommodate anyone under 6 feet, 5 inches tall and up to 300 pounds in weight.
05
zPods have taken on a new application with the COVID-19 pandemic, given that many families are spending most of their time within their homes, and need new ways to have periodic, individual privacy.

Carlton. “DC is very much a melting pot, very international. So I got to explore all sorts of wines, and to assist enthusiasts with learning about new, as well as traditional collectors’ wines,” he says.
By 2014, he became the head sommelier at the Ritz-Carlton’s Grand Cayman property in the Cayman Islands, overseeing the luxury beverage program for six restaurants, including Blue by Eric Ripert, celebrity chef and owner of La Bernardin in New York City. While spearheading the Cayman inventory of more than 3,000 unique wine selections, Michael says he learned just how much wine is “all about the experience, especially in intimate settings.” Indeed, at Blue is where Michael and the Gardners met and realized they shared similar interests. “The Cayman Cookout was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and that’s where I realized I wanted to make my own wine,” says Michael. SIPPING INTO UNIQUE WINES One reason GKV wines are considered different is due to making them in an “old school way, with a nod to how wines originally were done in the 1840s,” explains Michael. When Michael and Marc met, Marc poured him a glass of red wine from a fermenting tank. “It was dark, exotic, racy and unlike anything I’d tasted before. That’s because he intentionally shared with me a 100 percent Petit Verdot before it was blended,” he says. That’s all it took to convince Michael that marketing barrel sample wines was a novel opportunity. “We adopted a winemaking style that uses less manipulation. We’re not necessarily going for bold as much as we’re going for elegance and rusticity,” he adds. “It was exciting to show that unique style to California, which connects where wines truly come from. Our wines are more Old Italian style, and when people say they are food-

friendly, we consider that a big compliment.” This vigneron says they achieve an exceptional balance in their wines by managing higher acid profiles. LOCAL SOURCES FOR GKV WINES For those seeking vino from Gagnon-Kennedy Vineyards, selections are available at The Wine Merchant, 7817 Forsyth Blvd., Clayton; Schuncks Des Peres, 12332 Manchester Road; Truffles, 9202 Clayton Road, Ladue; and Olive and Oak, 216 W. Lockwood Ave., Webster Groves; and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, 1855 S. Lindbergh Blvd., Plaza Frontenac. One of the winery’s GKV labels was designed by former St. Louis printmaker artist Darcy Edwin. NEW TRIO IN TIME FOR HOLIDAYS Marc and Michael hold vineyard contracts on three of the oldest, most iconic Napa Valley sites: + Beckstoffer Georges III in Rutherford + Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper in Oakville + Samuel Brannan Vineyard in Calistoga Michael says the GKV team was ecstatic to market their very first releases of three wines at the end of last month. “One is a Bordeaux varietal that would be great for Thanksgiving. Another one is a red Valdigué,” he adds.
